Experimental Bronze Casting, Bronze Prickly Pear!

- This was an experiment to see if I could turn a prickly pear cactus into bronze. The casting went better than I thought it would. However what to do with after the casting, that's the challenge.

Great result! Maybe get a bell jar to go over it and prevent accidents
That’s a good idea.
@@lundgrenbronzestudiosI can just picture knocking it off a shelf and instinctively catching it 🩸
I just discovered your channel. I've done a bunch of lost wax casting in the past. I love it! and miss it. I was amazed how well the spines came out. Fantastic! excited to see more of your work.
It's finals weeks and I'm supposed to be working on a mountain of papers, but I found your channel earlier today and I can't stop watching. 😅
Another Amazing project! I LOVE watching you!
This is so cool. You should do something more fragile like an orchid flower or an oak leaf next!
Well done! That's pretty cool.
Love your “experiments”! Very inspiring. Thanks so much for taking the time to share your experiences with us. I always look forward to your videos 😁
this was a surprise. Good work man
Nice result!
You honestly do the most amazing stuff. While I’ll probably never be able to work my way up to investment casting, I absolutely love watching your videos and seeing what kind of amazing ideas you’ll come up with for casting.
Art that is also a hazard is the best kind of art.
7:17 - How on earth did that metal fill all those needles? Amazing.
I know. I was also surprised!
Wow, this is impressive.
Looks fantastic! Just amazing how you can replicate nearly any dam thing you want. With full vacuum assist the needles may have even been thornier. Regardless, the experiment proves you can cast an army of Prickly Pears!
A black walnut stand might compliment bronze better? Walnut is the king of hardwoods - using carbide cutters it machines and finishes like butter, plus the wood is known for its dimensional stability (a top pattern making wood in the foundry industry). Ebony has an even blacker color, but is expensive and so dense it damn near weighs as much as bronze. If you prefer reddish brown colors then Honduras mahogany is another beauty.
Oh black walnut is a beautiful wood. It grows around where I live. It’s pretty expensive but even a scrap would make a good stand for something like this.
That's awesome 😻
Very nice!
If you could mount it inside of a rock tumbler and maybe use a walnut shell media that might work. walnut works great for brass, but I'm not sure about bronze . Great video
I thought about a vibrating “tumbler” but didn’t have access to one.
You should try Tarn-x tarnish remover. It works wonders on my copper bars.
If you take off the fan shroud on the pump motor, you can grab the cooling fan with the motor turned off and get it turning by hand. Then when you turn it back on it will start right up, mine does the same thing sometimes.
I really like that the way it is, I think making it "brass" would not have worked so well. I also think that it may be the only cast cactus in existence ...alright maybe not the only one but there can't be many around.
Nice job and thankyou for sharing.
Wauww
awesome
you might try a stuffed bird, with the experience you have now gained it might be a succes to catch all the datails
That would be interesting.
Who do thunk it!!? Those needles!!
Дякую, хороша робота
Looks amazing! And it just has to be polished and sealed to shine, imo. I 'm not an expert, but isn't a sandblaster supposed to be able to do the job? Maybe with some more effort, or pressure or whatever. I thought I've seen some metal things polished to shine with a sandblaster.
Really been loving your videos, been on a spree lately. May I ask what brand of powder you use for the investments? Thanks a bunch :D
I use Ultravest from Rio Grande jewelry supply.
Can't leave i liquid solution witch would take layer off
Use an acid to clean it up. Or use silly putty to secure it
I tried soaking it in vinegar over night. It didn’t do anything, and I didn’t really want to try a stronger acid.
@@lundgrenbronzestudios can I ask why? Would it have damaged the cactus spines?
How many times did you poke yourself with it??
So many times!
And if it slowly oxidizes and develops a coating of verdigris it will look green like a cactus. Hmmmmm....how about doing She-Hulk? Because oxidation will turn She-Hulk green as well.
I’m not sure she hulk got good enough reviews.
@@lundgrenbronzestudios I'm old skule. I was thinking of the John Buscema comics from the 80s.
And don't get me started on the film versions of the Silver Surfer.
Haha. I see. I need to learn to get ahead of the trends and make a video like that while there is still hype about it.
Oooo, casting a cactus in copper to let it oxidize and turn green is a great idea
Cool video, but I'm gonna need some $$$ for my cameo lol
Haha. I’ll send you a royalty check if it goes viral.
@lundgrenbronzestudios lol, good luck on the channel.
Reminds me my of my grandads balls
Not what I was going for.
