  • This was an experiment to see if I could turn a prickly pear cactus into bronze. The casting went better than I thought it would. However what to do with after the casting, that's the challenge.

I just discovered your channel. I've done a bunch of lost wax casting in the past. I love it! and miss it. I was amazed how well the spines came out. Fantastic! excited to see more of your work.

Looks fantastic! Just amazing how you can replicate nearly any dam thing you want. With full vacuum assist the needles may have even been thornier. Regardless, the experiment proves you can cast an army of Prickly Pears!
A black walnut stand might compliment bronze better? Walnut is the king of hardwoods - using carbide cutters it machines and finishes like butter, plus the wood is known for its dimensional stability (a top pattern making wood in the foundry industry). Ebony has an even blacker color, but is expensive and so dense it damn near weighs as much as bronze. If you prefer reddish brown colors then Honduras mahogany is another beauty.

Oh black walnut is a beautiful wood. It grows around where I live. It’s pretty expensive but even a scrap would make a good stand for something like this.

If you could mount it inside of a rock tumbler and maybe use a walnut shell media that might work. walnut works great for brass, but I'm not sure about bronze . Great video

If you take off the fan shroud on the pump motor, you can grab the cooling fan with the motor turned off and get it turning by hand. Then when you turn it back on it will start right up, mine does the same thing sometimes.

  • @TalRohan

I really like that the way it is, I think making it "brass" would not have worked so well. I also think that it may be the only cast cactus in existence ...alright maybe not the only one but there can't be many around.
Nice job and thankyou for sharing.

Looks amazing! And it just has to be polished and sealed to shine, imo. I 'm not an expert, but isn't a sandblaster supposed to be able to do the job? Maybe with some more effort, or pressure or whatever. I thought I've seen some metal things polished to shine with a sandblaster.
