      Me too. Jim was a big influence on my childhood. Losing Jim was like losing a family member. Same with Robin Williams, mom put his shows on when I was a kid and would say "Uncle Robin is on TV. I legitimately thought he was an uncle till I got older. Still called him Uncle Robin. Big bird was my favorite as a kid, I'm going to miss him.

      The best thing about puppets is that if you do them right, they *are* real. In the sense that you know who they are you know how they sound you recognize them, and given the opportunity you would have aconversation with THEM. Not their puppeteer. The puppet.
      So often people comment how they forget the muppets aren't real. Find themselves legit addressing the puppet the way you would a co-worker or friend.

      @johncronin9540 4 года назад +20

      Alan Cogan Listen, why are you even here? No one is forcing you to view this, or to view the television show. If you read these comments, you should realize that Carrol Spinney, as Big Bird and Oscar, had a huge, positive impact on children of all ages for decades. Middle aged people are mourning this loss.
      You don’t have to like that, or have liked the program. But please, show some respect, and take the bile elsewhere. Carrol himself wanted the characters to continue, and helped to train his replacements. I think we just wish he could have been around for a little longer.
      If nothing else, consider how physically demanding bringing Big Bird to life was. Carrol had to keep one arm above his head for prolonged periods of time, to operate the eyes and mouth. Try standing with one arm straight up, and see how long you can do it. And his only way of seeing what he was doing was with a small television monitor strapped to his chest. These artists were tremendously talented in bringing these characters to life in very uncomfortable conditions.
      Frank Oz did such a brilliant job bringing Yoda to life that between takes in “The Empire Strikes Back”, that the director would actually address the muppet about how to do a scene. Frank Oz had to shout from beneath the stage that he couldn’t hear what the director was saying, and had to remind him that he needed to talk to him, not “Yoda”.

    Jim Henson was a genius. There's no other way to describe him. When I was a child, one of my favorite shows was Fraggle Rock. And only as I got older did I realize the messages it had taught me without me even realizing it. Don't get me wrong, I loved Sesame Street and The Muppet Show as much as the next guy, but Fraggle Rock was... special to me. It taught kids about important issues like love and the loss of loved ones, family and friends, death, life, looking past differences, understanding that we're all part of one another and even war and racism. Without sounding like an arrogant sod, I'd like to think I'm a decent person who treats people the way I would like to be treated. I'm not saying that Fraggle Rock is to thank for that, at least not completely. My friends and family, my parents and other good role models obviously take a good chunk of the credit. But I would be lying and doing Jim Henson a disservice if I didn't say he also had a large hand in shaping me into the person I am today. And if there truly is an afterlife, and I am judged worthy to enter it, I would love nothing more than to walk up to him, shake his hand and thank him. God bless you Jim Henson. The world is just a bit less bright without you.

  • @PapagenoJuan2

    Whats sad about this is its not Big Bird, its Jim Hensons mind coming to life. And Jim was a genius and watching Big Bird come out and sing that song, is like Jim talking to his friends and family. When you create a character and give it a voice, it comes to life and thats what Jim did. He brought imagination to life.

    • @schradeya
      @schradeya 10 лет назад +16

    • @Bitsy83
      @Bitsy83 10 лет назад +22

      So true. And the thing is, he didn't just create one character: he created a race, a species. He created so many wonderful things, whether a giant yellow bird, a small green frog, a fraggle, a gorg, or a gelfling. No matter how old you are, everyone has a "Muppet" that they can relate to. When the people came to this memorial, they didn't just say goodbye to a creator, they said goodbye to a friend, a gifted man who didn't want fame or fortune. All he wanted was to share his imagination with the world. He did and, in a way, he's still sharing that.

But seeing his work through the magic of RUclips and DVD really brings a smile to my face and I don't care if I'm 26. Jim was a genius for creating the Muppets and especially Sesame Street. He would be so happy to know that it's still running strong after 46 years, and almost 5 generations of children have learned from it.
