It really is, I run 90gr P size out of a TC sidelock. Starting with a clean bore and a 250gr XTP in a 50/45 sabot. Shoots under 3" and that is with a rear peep sight. A patched round ball will do the same thing at about 60Gr. Conicals are a whole different thing, I have various molds and tried numerous commercial offerings.
I've been using Pyrodex RS for a few decades now and I still us it to this very day in all of my Muzzleloaders. The only problem I find with these test comparisons is that you're only shooting 70 Grains. I like to see this comparison test done over with 100 Grains. 70 Grains is more a Pistol charge than a Rifle. 70 Grain is a really light load in the Rifle. I have tried every Powder that is and has been any they all perform practically the same and I still stick with the RS. I also shoot a 340 Grain Cast Bullet, however, you're not balancing your load with those 240-250 grain Bullets and only 70 Grains of powder.
You’re 100% correct, sir!!! as luck would have it. I just finished rendering a RS vs Select comparison video that will drop this Wednesday. RS is 80gr by weight 340gr ELD-X Sub MOA!!! With the price to that of black Horne 209… new favorite combo. Check it out this Wednesday at 10 central. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Found it interesting, great knowledge. But unless the animal is severely wounded a second or third shot with a muzzleloader well it just does not happen. Therefore the crude ring or dirty barrel is pretty moot point. Nice video though
Haven’t used water yet. You haven’t had any issue with damp powder charges? I see you are running multiple dry patches so I would assume it all gone but curious. I will have to run and test water vs cleaner test. Thank you for watching and commenting.
To me the more accurate load is by weight. Can you provide context as to why you believe that volume works better? Honest question. Opportunity to learn. Thank you for watching.
@suburbanhunt3653 I guess after researching the subject, you and I are both correct. "Black powder is traditionally loaded by volume rather than weight because, historically, the consistency of the powder was considered sufficient enough that a consistent volume would generally translate to a consistent charge weight, making it a simpler and faster method for loading in the field; however, for the most accurate and consistent results, especially when fine-tuning loads, measuring by weight is considered the better practice as it eliminates variations in powder density due to packing methods."
I tried pyrodex select for the first time. I used it in my CVA brake open pistol with a 225 grain Hornaday, FTX, bullet and sabot and the results were amazing. I got hole in hole accuracy.. I’ve tried all sorts of combinations of powders and pellets. The select powder at 60 grains by volume was simply amazing leading me to wonder what it would be like in a rifle like yours.
It’s close but I would say so yes. Honestly I’m spoiled by running BH209. Going back and testing Pyrodex and Triple 7 is just a dirty day at the range.
@@suburbanhunt3653 Ok just wondering your thoughts. I used to use pryodex when it first came out. Seemed to be almost as dirty as black powder. I really like the BH209 also , but I am using triple seven powder right now. Thank you for making these great videos.
Is that volume or weight? Are you running a 45cal rifle or 45 cal projectile with a 50cal sabot? Same hole shots are 100 yards would defiantly help in reaching out to 200 yards. Love hearing that you have found such a great combo. Best of luck in the hunting woods.
Apologies for my ignorance when it comes to twist. I was just trying to follow your combo. I know that are several different diameters and weights when dealing with XTP especially. I have also heard that the 45 caliber rifle is, or can be, more accurate then the 50 caliber. One of my good hunting friends uses a 45 cal and he swears by it. What kind of velocities are you getting with that setup?
My Traditions muzzleloader likes 120 by volume of that pyrodex rs powder with the 290 bore driver
That’s awesome. What type of groups you getting?
Pyrodex is the closest to real black powder of all the substitute powders
Interesting. Is that all things considered pressure, accuracy, cleanliness, etc or more in a general sense?

I have the fast, 1 in 20 twist carbine,
I've had great accuracy with that pyrodex rs and Hornady 240 grain xtp in the green sabot
That's awesome. I will have to try that combo and see how mine reacts.
What was your charge ?
It would be really cool if you did testing with a cva wolf
Well I gifted my Wolf to Jersey. Not sure if I can but I will see if he will leaned it to my. Thanks for watching.
Go up in powder charge and see what happens
I need to do ladder test for certain projectile and see how it reacts. Thanks for letting me know and for watching

From 1989 i decided to clean with water a 3-4 patches after every shot every time till the end of time

On the can and box of pellets it says use water for 777
Sorry did not hear by weight. I measure by volume. what would 70gr by weight equal to volume?
You should measure by volume rather than weight.

That’s awesome grouping. Nothing better than having a combo you know will get the job done.
How do you convert volume to weight measurement for loose powder?
Pyrodex and Triple 7 convert 77.7gn by weight = 100gn by volume. So whatever volume charge is multiply by .777 and you have your conversion.
Would you say the loose pyrodex powder is dirtier than the pyrodex pellets?
It’s close but I would say so yes. Honestly I’m spoiled by running BH209. Going back and testing Pyrodex and Triple 7 is just a dirty day at the range.

With the lose Pyrodex powder are you cleaning in between shots or just doing a 3 shot group with a dirty barrel
In all my test I shot 3 rounds then clean. I'm looking for repeatability in the stand. Thanks for watching.
Bore snake? People actually use those?
They work in some instances but I have since found that muzzleloader is to one. They don’t do a whole lot.
I shoot 90gr. 70 would be more for .45cal
90gr of Goex in a knight ultra light 1:20 twist 45cal 200gr xtp one hole at 100 yards..3 shot group using 777 primer

@@suburbanhunt3653 who makes a 50cal with a 1:20 twist?...and that's volume

5 shot groups are much more telling.
Agreed. Thanks for watching
