An all-time classic scene. The killer's estimation of Columbo rises precipitously, then precariously. The only thing missing is him bursting through the door again, just after the killer's cool veneer gives way to worry, with just one more thing.
@@philcarpenter242 And Culp was in my favorite Columbo episode of them all having to do with a calibration converter for a gun. It was the most smartly written of all the Columbo episodes I ever saw. I was surprised at the fact that it was Stephen J. Cannell that wrote that episode. He of course co-created The Rockford Files, created Baretta, The A-Team, etc.
@@davidcurrie6955 can't agree on that, but, there was...the Sting! Butch Cassidy... All the Presidents' men, The Electric Cowboy, etc... And, my personal favorite...Jeremiah Johnson.
"Isn't that a coincidence?" Columbo could literally drive the bad guys crazy. I'm surprised none of them begged to go to jail just to get it over and done with.
Adrian Carsini in "Any Old Port in a Storm" kinda did this. He could've kept going and made excuses, but he just confesses to Columbo because he's tired of running.
Did you see the MAD magazine parody? That was exactly the plot. "Clodumbo" would grab a totally innocent guy like Robert Culpable (really!) and badger him endlessly until he confessed just to get rid of him.
I love Columbo’s reply to the villains, about distances, like in this video, Columbo, “Your beach house and his are close by.” Villain, “No, it’s a couple of miles!” Columbo, “That close.”Or in other episodes it’s about money. Columbo, “Gee this painting much have cost you a lot of money. Villain, “No, it was only $7,000 dollars.” Columbo, “That much.”
The difference in the fake slap is kind of chilling. Columbo makes it clear what he's about to do, takes a big stiff wind up and stops far away from the face. The killer just whips his hand like he's about the backhand him, empathised with who flinched.
This is a 6-minute undressing, public stoning, whatever you want to call it. Columbo absolutely eviscerates this guy. Culp's character was reduced to a quivering pile of jelly after this beatdown.
At 4:28 you can see Culp is definitely not ambidextrous. When fake writing with his left, the whole entire hand moves, unlike 4:40 (right handed), where only the upper knuckles move slightly, like ours when using the dominant hand. He also has difficulty opening the file left handed 0:37. But these probably are things only a southpaw like me would notice; the overall effect of switching hands for drinking coffee, thumbing through papers, etc is a good one.

Columbo: - Isn't that weird? What a coincidence! Here a moment ago we were talkin' about left-handed people and you're a left handed! :) :) :) How clever.......how clever!!
It was all too obvious throughout he was favoring his left the whole time though, scratching his cheek, handling things, and the ring and watch on the left hand.....really no use in trying to deflect from it as that's a common way Columbo deduces how things went down.
"...Isn't that weird, what a coincidence!!....here a moment ago we were talking about left handed people and you're left handed....your beach house and his beach house are fairly close.... isn't that a coincidence, I tell ya this case is just full of them.." I love these episodes. I appreciate the acting, the solid dialogue and sense of time travel. The fashion sense and social mores are so different in the 70s. Smoking was so ubiquitous... Colombo lighting up while they chat is as out of place now as deep shag carpet and polyester leisure suits.
Classic episode in every respect, one of the very best. Ray Miland and Robert Cusp are superb, as is a watertight plot and an unforgettable finale. Very few episodes, in my opinion, to emulate the high standards set here.
At 4:19 when he first starts to sign the receipt left handed, there is nothing under his pen. Maybe the receipt book was not supposed to be in the shot. In the next shot, at 4:29, there is now a receipt book present. (and he's "singing" it in a different location on the file folder) Also, he quoted ambidextrous as being 10% of the population, but that figure is for left handed. Ambidextrous would be at about 1%. Also, he didn't have a receipt book with him, so picked one up off the desk, but after signing, Columbo takes the entire book, not just the signed top page. (and I didn't see the receipt book on the desktop before he reached for it) Also, when the teacup is put down, the handle is pointing towards the cigarette lighter on the desk, but in the next shot where the cup is visible, the handle is pointing to the file folder.
Remarkably ... I'm not sure, but ... I think Culp's brow starts to perspire as Columbo wastes time and dances around his main point. It looks like Culp is getting genuinely unnerved at the uncomfortable pauses.
Just imagine that their first choice to play Columbo was Bing Crosby, but he had retired and was not interested. 2nd? Lee J. Cobb. Then, Peter Falk called....
Columbo always gets these guys to give up the information needed to convict them. If the perpetrator simply handed Columbo a card, then told him that this was the name of his lawyer and that he should speak with him from now on, Columbo would never catch anybody.

A slight blooper by the great Robert Culp. At about 0:30 he says an unnecessary "thank you". Columbo said thank you which probably made him think it was his line. He's forgiven because he was always the best dressed actor.
I am ambidextrous and know for a fact that 1% of the population have this trait! Now on the other hand.......if you will pardon the pun ... most left handed people can use their right hand almost as well as their left.
Is that because they trained themselves to eat or write with their right hand? Or because they naturally use their right hand to operate scissors, knives and computer mice?
3:05 “Yeah, I would say we have a left handed murderer and uh....an unpremeditated crime.” I must be missing something. A murder is by definition a homicide “with malice aforethought”. Ergo, premeditated.
The "malice" does not necessarily have to be the homicide. For example, if there is a bar fight and one of the participants ends up dead, the other will have committed murder. Whether it is premeditated (1st degree) or not (2nd degree) depends on whether he planned for there to be a bar fight before provoking the victim and/or if he intended for the victim to exit the fight alive or not.
Robert Culp begins to sign the made up receipt on the folder containing the files , (although he's not really writing anything on it) . Cut to Falk "Isn't that weird". Go back to Culp and he's no longer signing the folder but a smaller blue pad magically appears.
I love how they both wanted to slap each other so bad. But they played it off like it was just a conversation. Great acting
Robert Culp - one of the bravest men I know! He let Columbo put him through the wringer on three separate episodes.
Jack Cassidy was also Columbo's on three separate occasions.
😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
Robert Culp was also the father in the one with the law students!
McGoohan was the murderer the most times, and the best imo. With Nimoy and Shatner as runners up, if only because I'm a trekky
I thought Culp was in four. Cassidy was great as a baddie.

This acting scene is better than 99% of what is on television today. Great actors.
Speaking of 99%, the percentage of people that are ambidextrous is about 1%, 10% is about how many people are left-handed.

It never fails to amaze me how Columbo--in his seemingly bumbling, fumbling way--always makes clear to his suspects that he knows they're guilty!
I just love Peter Falk's acting in reaction to Culp's ruffled reaction with the hand motion at 2:55
Culp was one of the best Columbo villains. Columbo arrested him three times, and they were all among the best episodes in the series.
All Columbo can do is arrest him.Don't blame Columbo, blame the system for letting him back out over and over.
