Some Bapedi, yes trace their origin from Zulu, Venda, Khalanga, Swazi etc. Matlalas do not share common origin with Sekhukhune but most are today under Sekhukhune kingdom.. And the neighbouring Amandebele tribes in Sekhukhune district and Mpumalanga province though having their own distinctive and language with most of them learning Zulu in school but their cultural practices, wedding and most importantly cultural initiations for boys are done mostly (not entirely of course) in Sepedi, the Sekhukhune version. Though closely related to Zulu, there are several words in Ndebele language that are shared with Sepedi and of course Setswana here and there. That is why it is easy for Mopedi to understand IsiNdebele language than SiZulu at firs encounter. This came about because a Sotho clan (which the locals named "Kololo") migrated to the western part Zambia in the 19th century. They conquered the Luyi/ Luyana and imposed their language on them. In due course a new language (Lozi) consisting mainly of Sotho and some Luyi grammar developed.

Pedi does not mean northern Sotho. Sepedi is one of the 30 northern Sotho languages or dialects. The language was simply imposed on everyone by missionaries of the previous regime. It is originally the language of the descendents of paramount chief King Sekhukhune whose heartland is roughly between Tubatse to Lepelle rivers. The rest of northern Sotho people were never ruled by Sekhukhune (e.g. Balobedu). This explains why Sepedi is a minority language on ThobelaFM in Polokwane, a non Pedi area. Even the word 'thobela' is arguably loaned from Khalanga (Kgalaka) for 'dumela'. BTW I'm Pedi.

The language is one. Malozi failed to pronounce the words in the same way that Basotho do. Remember malozi are maluyana. They used to speak siluyana. But after being conquered by Basotho, they started speaking sisotho in a broken way.
