Lozis originate from Congo DR 400 years ago from the Luba-Lunda kingdoms and were originally called the Luyi when we settled in Zambia and spoke the Luyana language. The Lozi kingdom actually has over 20 very different tribes, but the Aluyi settlers became the ruling tribe.
In 1830 the Kololo tribe led by Sebitwane conquered and colonised us for 30 years. They called us BaLozi as a mispronunciation of ALuyi. The Kololo tribe were concentrated in the South, from Sesheke to the Chobe river. Lozi were in the North/Centre by the Zambezi floodplain, so remained separate.
Many Makololo had begun dying of Malaria, due to a lack of immunity for most South African tribes. Eventually, they were overthrown by a revolt led by Sipopa a Lozi from the 'royal' lineage and most Makololo warriors were massacred or fled to Botswana where they were genocided by the BaMangweto (Tswana). The females were integrated into Lozi society. That's why the Kaololo tribe went extinct, but some Lozis have Kololo ancestry, even Kololo names are widespread.
We retained the Sekololo language and renamed it SiLozi, along with a few other Makololo cultural practices. That's why we speak this language. We're not Basotho but we're all Africans and that's what matters.

Lozi /Rotsi language came to be after a Sotho/Tswana Chief Sebetwane from Morden day Free State in South Africa escaped the Mfecane wars and conqured the Luyana(people group in Western Province Zambia). Prior to that the people in Western Privince spoke a variety of different languages. Today they are called baLozi or BaRotse and the region is Barotseland.
