Wonderful video. I was wondering if you could answer a question for me since you guys have done so many hard drives. Does a 7200.11 making "eleven clicks" followed with a turning off sound imply a stuck head or a broken head? If it is merely a stuck head, is it easier for you guys to work around it then having to replace it?
If the drive spins up even for a moment the heads are NOT stuck. Opening hard drives to look if they are stuck only increases the risk for platter damage due to contamination and drives up the cost of repair and inspection fees
@@hddrecoveryservices I see. What then could it be? I have this problem with an old 7200.11 drive and while I have found mentions of the "eleven clicks" error on forums via google.com, no one seems to know what it means. I'm buying a new power supply because I'm afraid it hasn't been getting enough power.
@@hddrecoveryservices Thank you for that! (You are SO GOOD; I've been watching quite a few HDD recovery vids lately and the quality of your tools and skills is superb.) I have an external 2TB Seagate HDD with an issue. It does what you say at the beginning of this video. Seems to spin fine. I have made a clean air compartment, have ordered Torx screwdrivers. (Have done cleanlab work in a laminar flow hood in the past.) There is a LOT of dust here in my home and I also noticed that the HDD went on strike after it had spent the night in the coldest corner of my home office when the temperatures outside got really low. So that makes me suspect that perhaps the actuator mechanism is the problem (contraction of the metal parts in combination with dust possibly jamming the mechanism; what do you think of that?). I have watched your videos and noticed that you later got into the habit of washing heads more often. But washing heads also means that you remove the actuator mechanism and then put it back and if there is debris on the heads, then there might also be some debris that affects the mechanism and that you get rid of it that way. Those tolerances must be minute, after all. But I was not entirely sure if any of the heads could be stuck. Now I know that they are not. Thank you. It does not seem to be a SATA bridge issue either; that said, I can't be 100% sure that the drive is always getting enough juice though it does have its own external power supply (and that does not seem to be the issue). (There could be a USB port issue on the PC, but a new 4TB disk that I have works fine with those ports and that one does not have an external power supply, so that rules out that it's the PC that somehow caused the problem.) A docking station might be handy to have. (I also have two internal HDDs with issues - at the same time, yes - but one is dead and had nothing on it so I will just replace that one. The other one seems to be doing better now and is passing tests again; it may have had one bad sector in a critical area that I managed to have worked around now because it went from reporting 7 bad sectors to 6 bad sectors, which may sound unusual (but this may have something to do with Linux; it is running a dual boot). One thing I have meanwhile learned (for people like me, without your kind of gear) is that if you encrypt your Linux partition, checking that partition and telling Linux to avoid the bad blocks becomes impossible or near impossible. (I have been plagued by hacking for a long time, by people who turned out to be picking the locks to access my equipment and I never saw that coming. My HDDs have not been too happy about all that interference and about how I often responded to it, that is, I was stupid enough to spin the drives up too soon after having to throw power off the PCs when they froze instead of letting everything die down and only then flipping the switch again. Mea culpa. I really should have known better and will be much more careful from now on.) Sorry for the long comment... (lol)
when I start up my PC it sounds like the disc slows down and then it's four clicks and then it doesn't happen for the rest of the time of using the computer, it's only when I start it up, is that normal?
I have 1 TB WD external hdd and when I connect with computer the light of power hdd go on but not showing or detected and not recognized too while the disk spindle I hear sound rotating so can you help me how can I solve this problem, thanks in advance
In most cases if not all, the information (data) is worth more then the drive why bother rebuilding the hard drive unless cost of replacement is a factor, but if the drive failed the first time why trust it(hard drive) again?
frozen house: In the scenarios I've seen, these data recovery operations can be VERY expensive compared to the cost of the drive. So the implication is that the data is VERY important to whoever owned the drive. (i.e. some company). So the key thing would be to recover all the data possible -- whether the drive should be trusted long term (I certainly wouldn't) is secondary -- it's getting all the data off it within a reasonable cost/timeframe by someone who knows what they're doing -- probably with access to a clean environment. ... Now, if the data is very important -- why the HELL they don't take care to ensure they have multiple safe copies of the data, including an offsite copy or two, is beyond me, but people do really stupid stuff and try to get by on the lazy and the cheap all the time -- until they have a big problem.

I bought a brand new PC 10 days ago. While OS was installing, PC was having some clicking sound, but is not like electrical click, is more thicker clicking sound. After finishing installation, that clicking sound went away. I have a 240 SSD and 1 TB HDD WD blue series. After couple of days, i have installed CS GO and World of Warplanes, and when those games are running that clicking sound comes back, it clicks every 5 second, but since PC is under warranty i cannot open it to inspect further. When just browsing the web and performing light operation, that sound is not coming up. I have to say that PC is running perfectly but that sound its just annoying and it shouldn't be there since PC is brand new. Does anyone can possible advise what can be the issue here, and should i go back to the service with the warranty and let them fix the issue or there is a way how this can be fixed without going there. Thanks in advance!
Great video! :-) Thanks. :-) Two questions: - Where did you get those tools that you fixed the heads with before removal? - Where did you get that cool jig you mounted the disks in?
most of my hardware for internal work on hard drives is from these guys here: www.hddsurgery.com tools are pricey, but they are Porsche of data recovery tools (as in there is no substitute)

But not only that, but what you are doing is very eye opening for me. I've torn the guts out of more computers than most people could ever imagine, but I have NEVER gone to so much detail to get at the data. And more so because I am in between jobs and this very well may have given me a new lease on life! I'm dead serious too! I can do this, I just do not have the skill set at the moment.
First of all, thank you for the reply. :-) As for pricey, I never expected 400Euro for a headtool for Maxtor.... I have some disks I`d like to play with before I try on one I found that I need to fix, but I guess I need to save up some money first.

I have a question about my Samsung 500 GB drive. The drive was clicking badly when I had it installed in my external hard drive enclosure it was very hot . I let it cool overnight and then hooked it to a USB Sata adapter and back to my PC . The drive is recognized by the PC and I can see the data when I try to copy the data off the drive it reaches a certain point and makes a clicking sound. I feel the drive is failing and I wanna get as much data off the drive as I can as quick as I can what do you recommend. Thanks ! Enjoy your videos !
I had a similar problem..i read somewhere to put it in a sealed sandwhich bag and put it in the freezer...i noticed i had about 15 20 min before the drive would stop working...i had to take the data off in sections...glad it was only a 750gb but i still had to repeat that process 10 or 11 times and i noticed there was some files that were corrupted and cldnt be recovered...after i was done it was pretty cool taking it apart n not worrying if i fucked anything up...i opened n it and hooked it up just to see what it was doing...the heads slam from one side to the other making the clicking sound...not sure why they do that..interesting to watch tho.
supply and demand, I guess. But its not quick, some cases can take weeks to image out. As a business it translates to higher costs for the process since patient is taking up a channel that could be used to solve other cases.
Hello, Great informative video. Thank you! I have a question. I I have Dell Inspiron 660 (about 8 yrs old). This week it gave me message that hard drive failure. When tried to turn on, it’s making sounds like a older scanners made while scanning. So I changed the hard drive but problem didn’t go away. So it doesn’t seem like a hard disk problem. I also changed the SATA cable and power cable. But no different. What do you think could be a problem?
Hello there, I have one of these drives that suddenly if it's plugged into my PC, windows will not start (and it's not the C: Drive just a storage drive D:). So I bought an external USB cable adapter to see if it would work on it's own as an external drive. The drive powers up, however, then goes to a SHH SHH SHH SHH ..... SHH SHH ... random sound. No particular pattern. I was hoping someone would help me understand what the noises mean? and if I can get my data back.
Awesome that i find it. I have the same issue with an external western digital where it clicks some times like its almost catching up but eventually dont. Do you think i should replace the heads with equal heads? Or what else might be needed? Thanks you
If the drive is working fine after the headswap then why do you need imaging software at all? Can't you just plug it into PC as normal and use the drive? At least as long as it takes for Windows to copy all files off it onto a newer better drive.
@@hddrecoveryservices What will happen if a drive is hooked up after a headswap, why is that a huge nono? I assume you have to connect it too after a headswap

Good job! Are these head ramps new? In some of your last videos you used some other spacers to hold the heads apart. Or do you use them only on HDDs with a lot of heads?
I've got ramps for almost everything. I think I only use spacers on ST LM seagate/Samsung drives and older to toshiba. The one that is used on 7200.12 in this video is probably from 2009-2010 because it was actually designed for 7200.11 and it is a very early version

I was using the laptop in my daily activities, suddenly a blue screen appears, the system restarts and doesn't boot anymore. I think all my data is gone :(.
well, you will most likely lose it forever if you try to do this yourself. Not trying to discount your ability, but these procedures need lots of knowledge, expertise, and most importantly proper equipment to pull it off.
HDD Recovery Services alright, now here's my scenario. I have a dead laptop HDD that went on its own without any previous tampering and physical trauma. Upon death I did open it in a non-sterile environment to check if it was a stuck head or something. Heads glided just fine, just the click of death. I did all this DIY without true knowledge of the consequences of my actions as I went along. The drive may have 1 spec of dust particle (to the naked eye that is) on the platter however they were never tampered with to get misaligned, not even touched to clean it. It has been run multiple times under these non-sterile conditions however. There is no evidence of scratch whatsoever on the platter (to the naked eye). My pcb board is dead, drive dead, tried a swap with identical pcb board with the same serial number, it spins up then gets the click of death, do i need to change chips on the boards?

(You are SO GOOD; I've been watching quite a few HDD recovery vids lately and the quality of your tools and skills is superb.)
I have an external 2TB Seagate HDD with an issue. It does what you say at the beginning of this video. Seems to spin fine.
I have made a clean air compartment, have ordered Torx screwdrivers. (Have done cleanlab work in a laminar flow hood in the past.)
There is a LOT of dust here in my home and I also noticed that the HDD went on strike after it had spent the night in the coldest corner of my home office when the temperatures outside got really low.
Mea culpa. I really should have known better and will be much more careful from now on.)
Sorry for the long comment... (lol)
i tried to reach you from the contact form that you have but since i live in Europe i coudnt manage to fill in the form! the telephone isnt acceptable

:-) Thanks. :-)
Two questions:
- Where did you get those tools that you fixed the heads with before removal?
- Where did you get that cool jig you mounted the disks in?
most of my hardware for internal work on hard drives is from these guys here: www.hddsurgery.com
tools are pricey, but they are Porsche of data recovery tools (as in there is no substitute)

I'm glad Reidar asked about those things because I will buy them ... If I've got the money to spare at the moment. But not only that, but what you are doing is very eye opening for me. I've torn the guts out of more computers than most people could ever imagine, but I have NEVER gone to so much detail to get at the data.
Thank you so much for introducing me to a part of my world I knew existed but that I had never seen before. And more so because I am in between jobs and this very well may have given me a new lease on life! I'm dead serious too! I can do this, I just do not have the skill set at the moment.
First of all, thank you for the reply. :-)
As for pricey, I never expected 400Euro for a headtool for Maxtor.... I have some disks I`d like to play with before I try on one I found that I need to fix, but I guess I need to save up some money first.

Can you tell me where the proper home needle placement is for a Western Digital wd2500jb hdd? I found it stuck mid platter when I opened it to look at it? This particular hdd is a 250gb and it has a pcb board too.
did you open it in clean air? if not it’s already dead by the time you opened it from the dust.
Ci proverò! Vediamo che ne vien fuori. Un laboratorio di Torino mi ha chiesto 800€ per recuperare circa 60 giga di files da un disco da 500Gb
im gonna do this once i get a chance im pretty tech savvy will just have to see if this works
it won't, you need to do this in a clean room because if any tiny particles in the air get onto the hard drive platter then your data is toast
ProBit Support its ok I destroyed the hard drive and trashed it not worth it lol your right
Clear and interesting. It seemed quite quick to solve. But quotes are always around the 12 hours and US$2,000 mark. Why is that?
supply and demand, I guess. But its not quick, some cases can take weeks to image out. As a business it translates to higher costs for the process since patient is taking up a channel that could be used to solve other cases.
Also, he has invested a lot of money in software and equipment!
Hello,
Great informative video.

No, imaging is the most important part of the process. Hooking up a failed drive after headswap is a huge nono

Are these head ramps new? In some of your last videos you used some other spacers to hold the heads apart. Or do you use them only on HDDs with a lot of heads?
I've got ramps for almost everything. I think I only use spacers on ST LM seagate/Samsung drives and older to toshiba. The one that is used on 7200.12 in this video is probably from 2009-2010 because it was actually designed for 7200.11 and it is a very early version

well, you will most likely lose it forever if you try to do this yourself. Not trying to discount your ability, but these procedures need lots of knowledge, expertise, and most importantly proper equipment to pull it off.

Is it possible by any chance to clean the contaminated heads?
Yeah, but swapping them with new ones from a compatible donor is a better option.
In your opinion, could there be any hope for this drive if I send it for professional services?
we recover drives that have been previously opened by users several times a week. It does make work more challenging but not impossible.
