A trick I like to use is to read the question before hand so I don't attempt a "cold reading". Just so I know what I'm looking out for... Ie. is the question asking me for more conceptual analysis on specific human experiences of is asking me more about features and form? I find that way I don't waste time and can spend more time writing and reading. Thanks!
A 'volta' (or 'turn') is typically a word or phrase that signifies a shift in the tone of a poem. An example would be the word "But" or "Yet" which takes the poem from a positive perspective to a negative perspective.
