🤔 It's hard enough to find an empty EV charging point when visiting my parents in the UK, with all the hybrid ICE EVs with tiny batteries using them up. I can't wait for people to be using them to charge their leisure batteries 😉. Maybe councils could install 240V supplies for Van life, etc, in addition to more EV charging stations. In the Netherlands, we have lots of charging stations, so it will be less of an issue (I'm British BTW, not Dutch). Anyway, great video, and cool idea
Yeah, I think we campervan folks should let the EVs go first and try not to bother them too much so we can keep using this place in the future. It's really important to me, especially during the winter.
OMG, I had no idea this existed, I have a Marco polo and a home charger for our EV this is a game-changer!! as the leisure battery discharges even when not in use, thanks man for a great video.
Hi Mel, another great video. Quick question, would you consider doing a video on the cost of charging say a Bluetti EB 70, or a Jackery 500ah from zero percent from one of these EV chargers as they seem to be the most common ones used? Cheers Mel.
Tel me if this is correct. You take a type 2 ev lead and connect a cee plug on the end. You fitted a cee box on the outside of your van with the white cable going from the cee box to the white household 3 pin box in your van. You then plug in your bluetti in to the household box in the van. The bluetti regulates the power it takes from the ev box . If this is correct it’s bloody genius.
Great idea I wouldn't have a issue with u using the charger to do this unless I really needed a charge then I might ask if I could use the bay but why not take advantage just be aware if u park in the bays u can get a ticket if ur not a EV
This could be Ok with a decent system drawing in 24-48v and a high amp charger. This goes to show how limited these power banks are in winter. A good system with a decent B to B is a must in the winter months.
Mel I use 2 bluetti powrbricks to charge my bluetti AC200P , one in the normal port and the other into the solar input , takes half the time to charge so less time on an EV point 😀
As an EV driver, I don't see an issue with this per say. My only niggle is the possibility of someone plugging in a campervan then walking away. Some EV drivers who don't have the facility to charge at home rely heavily on public chargers. Other than that, there's no reason why we can't all get along as long as you stay with the van and be prepared to free up the charger if a car turns up :)
Hi Mel, you didn't show the disconnect process, with an ev you have to stop the charge in your car else the plug won't disconnect(and I have had them lock in any way, had to call the help line), how did you get the plug out? Also you had(and I have) the Allpowers s2000 pro, it charges @1.5kW...which would be much better for not hogging the charge point. 👍 Btw Alliexprees do the adapter leads for £38.00,so you need to shop around Mel. 😊
Why are you getting only 400 watt? The AC200Max should do 1200+ or so. I’m in the USA, if I want to test this out I’ll have to find a 240v lithium charger with a 48v output for a diy battery bank. 20amp output would be good for ~1100 watt of charging. Can you recommend chargers with 20, 40, 60, 80 & 100 amp outputs? Preferably if they mail to the US too.

It would be good if they could add maybe 2 low power inputs suitable for a camping electric hook-up connector for camper van battery charging while the main high power input for battery car charging can still be used as well. If it's a power problem They could set a limit so it doesn't interfere with people trying to hi power charge there car. So for example you only get enough power to charge your battery but not run a microwave or electric fire while connected as it would trip off.

This is great, I am planning on carrying a 120amp 12v power supply with me in my van, to use as a temporary charger for my lifepo4 cells. If I plug this into my shore power socket after connecting at one of these charge points as you did, my 12v battery pack will charge at 120amps (1680 watts) 👌 If nothing else, within an hour (if I’m doing my shopping for example), my 280ah battery could go from 50 to 90% in that time. One thing worth being aware of. Those adapters will ignore signal from charging station. As long as the charging station supports enough power; it's not a problem. If the charging station is part of a load balancing system, or other reason for reduced power; they might temporarily or permanently not support enough power. Large parking with many stations, can have load balancing, where they restrict the power. Home stations, can have load balance with the rest of the building, where available power at charger can change depending on how much is used inside. Some installation can be permanently set to low power. The lowest power is ~1.4 kW, if you appliance/charger use less, then you are good to go. If you are above 1.4 kW you should verify the power setting for the station, if it's permanent of dynamically changes. If you try to charge at 2 kW from a 1.4 kW station, it will probably shut down, depending on the system, it might auto reset or you need a service technician, Mind you, I'm not trying to scare anyone, but I think it's useful to be aware of the possibility, to avoid shutting down the system for many stations.

The BIG question ... ... How Much ❓ and ...
How Long ❓ (I suppose that depends on how low your etti is when you start ... but let's say about 50% 🤔🤔)
Also, if Tesco was closed, do parking charges apply - some s/mkts only allow you to park for the "three hours" limit whilst it is open 🤔🤔
Interesting vid, and glad you warned ppl about not abusing the system - after all, it's primary use is to service EVs only
Correct on the parking, and only use during opening times too, (people have had very heavy parking fines for not reading the rules) cost of podpoint atm is 28p kWh. Others are about 35p kWh.
I was there for 2 hours and it cost 28p 👍🤓👍
@@BigVanSmallWorld wow, never knew it was so cheap ‼️ which means it probably IS going to be abused ... but hopefully people will respect others ✔💯
We didn't get a Waffle this week 😥
🤔 It's hard enough to find an empty EV charging point when visiting my parents in the UK, with all the hybrid ICE EVs with tiny batteries using them up. I can't wait for people to be using them to charge their leisure batteries 😉. Maybe councils could install 240V supplies for Van life, etc, in addition to more EV charging stations. In the Netherlands, we have lots of charging stations, so it will be less of an issue (I'm British BTW, not Dutch).
Anyway, great video, and cool idea
The more people demand and use them the greater the supply will be. It should help in theory. 😁
Let’s hope as demanded increases so will the supply
Unfortunately there's no encouragement from UK councils for #Vanlife, they prefer folk to use campsites.
Glad I could help!
Correct but I did install a RCD as well just for safety 👍
Remember with AC the polarity changes every cycle. Do not mix up with DC. ON AC you are dealing with Live & Neutral.
Regards.
Really glad that you pointed out that the adapter lead has inbuilt electronics, so don’t try and build your own, you’ll burn your van down!
That’s what happens 🙏
Just a few resistors to trick the charging station it's connected to an EV.
Perfect, just what is needed to make the existing queues to charge for actual EVs even longer
Not if people follow my advice
he’s paying, what’s the problem?
Mel I use 2 bluetti powrbricks to charge my bluetti AC200P , one in the normal port and the other into the solar input , takes half the time to charge so less time on an EV point 😀
That’s brilliant I actually just ordered the bricks for mine keep watching ill make a video to update how I’m getting on with the Bluetti in my van
Mels got(or did have) an Allpowers s2000pro, which charges @1500W with its built in charger.
@@BigVanSmallWorld l thought you had a Bluetti D050S because that's even better
I did the exact same thing a few years ago but to charge electric skateboards :) There's quite a few around that are free...
Could be even more conspicuous if you run the plug under the van still a nice setup.
You're a paying customer no need to apologize or move your vehicle for EV's.
Thank you 🙏
As an EV driver, I don't see an issue with this per say.
Thank you for taking the time to comment and keeping it positive really appreciated
Mel you don't need a genie, just buy an EFOW power cell.
Yeah that’s absolutely correct 👍

Great video Mel, how much did it cost you to charge up? How long were you there?

There’s more than one provider 🤫

Cool, I figured it was possible. Perhaps they could add a bonus socket for campers with long leads or small devices, ebikes, scooters etc. Then have a notice giving parking priority to the EV.
I rember the services once had lockboxes where you could charge phones. Maybe they could add one with a pin code/time lock and charge £1.

It is good to see it works, and I don’t see any reason why you shouldn’t be allowed to use EV charger, you are paying extra for the electric your using.
However if a EV did need to plug in, it is very kind and thoughtful of you to let them go ahead of you. I don’t known how payment works or if you disturb the charge does it affect the payment, out of curiosity Mell can you let us know in the update the cost please ? Thank you buddy 👍🏻🙏🏼

If you try to charge at 2 kW from a 1.4 kW station, it will probably shut down, depending on the system, it might auto reset or you need a service technician,
Mind you, I'm not trying to scare anyone, but I think it's useful to be aware of the possibility, to avoid shutting down the system for many stations.
As long as no damage occurs to my equipment I'm OK with this risk - I can probably run away faster than they can realize I've caused an issue :D
@@thegrave2000 CCTV is becoming fairly common on charging sites. I guess you run faster than the camera can catch you then.
@@thorbjrnhellehaven5766 they will have very hard time proving what exactly happened. And by the time this investigation is completed (if someone even bothers to do it which I seriously doubt) you'll be long gone.
Unfortunately there are some who will abuse this as is the owner of the EV on the charge point who it appears like they are using the charge point for parking not just charging. My friend who has an EV complains about this all the time and thinks people should be fined for it. As for this idea lets just say he was not keen
Correct, more common sense needed, plus a little bit of thought for others. 🤔
Mel. Thinking of getting this unit., and the new one has just been releasted. You're using the Buletti 200 Max for both to your 12v fuse box and to charge via the EV car chargers. The new Bluetti 200L has some changes to the unit and I can't see the 30A port. Did I miss something or can both still be done the same way as you have with your 200 Max?
The 12v 30amp outlet is the most important part for me as it allows the AC200 Max to be connected to my 12v fuse bord I dont know about the 200L I’ve not seen it yet
I can foresee a time when these older 7KW & 22KW chargers become less used as EV charging tech has already moved on. Modern vehicles can use the new *360KW* charge stations now. 😲
Hopefully they keep these old Pod Points installed for a while longer, as this method of plugging in won't work with modern rapid charge stations.
I’m sure it won’t last so just enjoy the power while we can 😵💫
