I am Taiwanese, and Taiwan is the first legal gay marriage country in Asia. I am so touched by your video. I totally agree with every word that you say in this video. I love this movie. Raya and Namaari will be a cute couple that I can imagine. We can imagine how many kids will get courage if they are gays. The LGBTQ+ community is way bigger than the world can imagine. Young kids don't need to feel they are wrong or weird again. They don't need to hide in their closet again. They can be proud as a gay! We can teach our kids that It is no shame to be yourself. Like the topic that Disney shows us. Trust. These gay kids can trust this world more. They also can be trusted by others more.

If Raya gets a series, I fully expect Rayamaari to become canon, because whether it’s a Disney TVA series or Disney+ series, Disney has tackled animated queer romance before (The Owl House), but a theatrical film sequel is too risky for them.
I think what make Raya and Namaari's relationship even more interesting is that they've become some sort of rival under the circumstances that they're from different clans and that the clans are enemies, Namaari was under her mother's order to get close to Raya and finding out where the dragon's gem is, but even then I feel like Namaari genuinely wants to be friend with Raya (or more)
Also the fact that it's been 6 years where they (presumably) haven't seen each other, yet they still clicks together perfectly?? Raya being very confident that she KNOWS Namaari and how to rile her up even after 6 years is proof enough I think
I totally agree with all of this! Although somewhere during those 6 years, we know Raya snuck into Fang to steal the dragon scroll - I wonder if she didn't maybe flirt her way in there and pull an Uno reverse card on Namaari by betraying her to steal the scroll. Raya says "Oh is THAT why you're chasing me? And here I thought it was because you missed me." So idk! That's totally just a theory but I think it's possible they were seeing each other during those 6 years!
"The owl house" is Disney tho. And the main characters are pretty much canonically gay for eachoder xD. They probably have the balls to do that in a show because that will most likely be seen by the teens and not their parents since it won't be in the cinemas. Soo how about a" Raya and the last dragon" TV show? They pulled that with Tangled and it worked pretty well. (not only with Tangled but, that one was really good in my pov) I mean, even if you put their ship and relationship aside, think of the potential that it would have regarding the characters and their development, and the nations in general. Or about a more in depth dive into Namaari's redemption arc and Raya's trust issues. In this movie we focused on trust. How about a show that would focus on forgiveness and growth. If we are being real, not everyone would normally imediately accept the concept of kumandra just because their leaders did. There's so much world building, so much character dynamic. We could even expand on Sisu and the dragons. The potential is endless and this would be a perfect opportunity to give Raya and Namaari's relationship the chance to develop into the representation we all deserve. Not to mention their undying chemistry and things left unsaid at the end of the movie due to the "less that two hours" limitation

3 things:
1. The voice actors, writers and animators made a gay princesses movie, but they also left just enough room for Disney execs to plead plausible deniability when marketing the movie worldwide. Cynical? Yeah, but it's mosty likely going to work.
2. Considering that Disney already has a confirmed lesbian/bi relationship in one of their TV series, this movie could end up looking kinda dated 10 years from now.
3. I've heard that in pre-colonial times, Southeast Asia was probably the most lgbt-friendly group of cultures on the planet. They certainly didn't seem to have anywhere near the same number of hangups about sexuality that the Christian and Muslim worlds did.

As much as I'd love them to be together, I feel their relationship is a bit toxic. Namaari never apologizes to Raya, and when Raya is rightfully distrusting of her with her crossbow pointed at the last dragon the film blames her for not blindly trusting her. But again I'd love to see them together, their playful flirting was so nice haha

Yeah, their relationship still has its troubles. And that's fine because relationships are flawed, especially if you consider what they've been through. I do hope though that there's gonna be a sequel or something where they work out their problems and Namaari learns how to deal with her mistakes, and Raya learns the difference between being naiive and trusting. It'd be nice to see them improve, as their own people, but also their relationship.
Watched this film with my family and my closeted bi self was panicking everytime they interact. Yeah that really shows how much gay energy these two girls holds 💀

It’s absolutely true. They haven’t made the clear decision to make something for us about us but still take our money. As much as I would of wanted something more at the end beside the shoulder touch, something like a caress to her face for example, even with no kiss I would of been happier. I agree though. They seem to be taking steps in the right direction and although they may be crumbs, every step forward counts. May not be full on yet but I did see a lot of lezzy/queer tones here, way more than subtext and I will wait for the sequel because that’s the one that will confirm this. Hope Disney can rise up by then.

I'm banking on Disney making a sequel for this! It's already being asked for, not just due to popularity reasons (like frozen 2), but also because a lot of the critiques about this movie was that there wasn't enough time to really get to view the world. Some moments felt a bit rushed, and people are excited to see more. Not to mention, there are some questions that need to get answered, like why do the Druun hate water? What's with the pose? What's with the dragons magic?? Like there's just so much more that could easily be touched on in a sequel, and that excluding the obvious potential of a romance between Raya and Namaari. (Which, I think is honestly the only way that could go. Like, if they tried to give either of them a different love interest, or have them be 'just friends', I think that would be a major disappointment and honestly a slap in the face for me personally lol. At that point, just don't make the sequel.) But hey, at least for now there's videos like yours to make me feel like im in fact not crazy, so thanks!

Fun Fact: In Once Upon a Studio in the final shot of the film most of the couples are standing next to one another (or at the very least near to each other) and where did they put Namaari and Raya, sitting next to each other on Tok Tok's back. They could have put Namaari next to Tok Tok but no they intentionally had her Right Next to Raya in VERY close proximity.

Also my way to give them a sort of a kiss would be to, in the hands on rayas shoulder moment, have them hug, and one of them kisses the other on the cheek. It would still be explainable by culture if you just added another one or two greeting cheek kisses throughout the film, but it would mean that we have our kiss that we wanted.

Correction it is not illegal to be lgbt in Indonesia except one province (which criminalize heterosex relationship too outside marriage) . Though since Raya is supposed to adapt South East Asian culture, people from Malaysia/Brunei/Indonesia will feel differently if Raya is lesbian.
Attitude of mainland south east asia though is more accepting toward lgbt. This is also why Disney can’t really just paint a broadstroke of south east asian culture as raya anyway.

Yes, your words are so true. I am from Central Asia, and our people think exactly as you said: "This is so perverted and our children will become gay and immoral after watching such cartoons." This is the world we live in, but if Disney and all other studios make more LGBT representational cartoons, then maybe one day our kids will also realize that being themselves is perfectly normal, I mean when I rewatched Frozen as an adult, I felt this story, the song and Elsa, it was so about just accepting yourself, and if every cartoon becomes more representative, then children and teens will not be so ashamed of themselves, then parents will not be able to do anything. They can't stop them from watching all the cartoons, so I just hope big studios get bolder in this regard.

I actually can’t get behind this. Namari was the villain the entire movie, she 1) backstabbed Raya 2) started the apocalypse 3) made Raya lost her entire country and father 4) nearly genocided an entire village for her selfish goals 5) backstabbed Raya AGAIN 6) gaslit Raya into thinking everything she did wrong was Raya’s fault... and we are supposed to think she redeemed herself because she “did the right thing” after she left with no choice because everyone else was turned into stones????
For the entire movie, Raya was the sole person who put any effort into fixing what’s wrong and building their “trust”. Raya was expected to take the high ground and blindly trust Namari again and again after enduring all the trauma caused by her. She was punished for trusting Namari and then blamed for not trusting her. Namari never did anything to earn that trust or forgiveness, all she did was dooming everyone again and again and trying to take credit for Raya’s hard work towards saving the world. She never even said a single sorry. My blood is still boiling after she blamed Raya for Sisu’s death. Sorry but I can’t fathom how anyone would think they can be together when she’s so toxic. Raya had already gone through so much, she deserves better, and in their world, literally anyone is better. She is literally worse than Hans in every way.
If they do become cannon it would send such a bad message about victims being responsible for fixing an abusive relationship and getting blamed for not trusting their abusers. You can’t just look pass that because she has a cool haircut

I would just say that 1. Everything evil Namarari did was because of her controlling mother.
2. Raya and Namaari are still just kids (they are 18 at the end of the movie) and it is extremely common for teenagers to be heavily influenced and controlled by their parents at that age, plus all teenagers make mistakes.
3. Killing Sisu was partially Raya's fault. Namaari was not there to kill Sisu, she was there to take her hostage. Threatening her with the crossbow was supposed to make Sisu go with her back to Fang, If Raya hadn't pushed her, the shot would not have been fired.
4. We see lots of love stories in books and movies where the lovers start out as enemies or hating each other, its a pretty common love story trope.
5. Even if these two girls are bad for each other, they are still gay which was the point of this video. The flirting and obvious attraction had to be talked about, so I did!

@@MermaidZelda 1,2) it doesn’t change the fact that she never said sorry or did anything to redeem what she did after she grew older. At the end of the day she is still at wrong. Even after her supposedly “turning good”, she never even said a single sorry.
3) again with the victim blaming. Raya suffered massive trauma and lost everything because of Namari, she has no obligation to trust her, she already did way abbots her part when she trusted her with the gem and she was betrayed again. It’s not “partly her fault” that she doesn’t believe someone who betrayed her twice and caused her so much trauma. Also, her fingers was on the trigger, gun safety 101 would be not put your finger on the trigger if you are not going to shoot. Also, taking someone hostage is hardly anything innocent lol.
4) those story generally don’t involve that much betrayal and gaslighting, and would have an arc where the enemy redeem themselves and do something wrong to earn the trust back. Marmari did nothing of sort
5) I don’t mind seeing them as gay but I find them together extremely toxic.
@@WeiYinChan Late reply, but I believe if the movie had been longer or there had been a series or sequel, then Namaari would have apologized and attempted to atone for her actions, possibly even going too far and suffering because of her need for forgiveness that she may believe herself unworthy of... we would see her struggle with self-doubt and feelings of worthlessness and overwhelming guilt, which is covered in the VAST majority of Raya/Namaari fanfiction... but the movie was already too long and Disney probably felt Namaari had redeemed herself enough for the film to end, though perhaps not enough for us to have closure. The point is, Namaari did terrible things, but she is not irredeemable and if given the screentime and talented character writing she and Raya could end up as a fine example of the "Enemies to Lovers" trope.
