  • It's summer -- floral abundance is everywhere! I love love love flowers both in my garden and in my house. Although my own garden is mainly succulents, bromeliads and Mediterranean plants, I'm fortunate to live in an area where I get beautiful, locally grown flowers at our Santa Barbara Farmers Market every week.
    I also share tips on keeping cut flowers fresher longer in the blog post entitled Fabulous Fresh Cut Flowers which goes along with this video. You can see those tips in written form, check out an interview with Debra Prinzing & see photos of beautiful flowers I took at our farmers market by clicking on this link: www.joyusgarden.com/fabulous-f...
    This is where I share all things gardening & creating. Let's get out in the garden & make the world a beautiful place!

    I cannot tell you how much your video meant to me. The flowers from Mom's funeral looked pretty grim when they got home, and your cut flower food has made them look great again. It has helped us very much this week that her flowers are still beautiful..

    -Cut them diagonally about an inch up, then put in cool water
    -Get rid of any of the leaves that could get in the water
    -Put a sugar solution (sugar and bleach?) in the water for nutrients
    -Prevent bacteria with some bleach and get rid of the foliage that touches the water
    -Recut stems and change water five days in
    -Keep out of hot sunny window

    I'm 78 and have recently taken up flower photography. A friend brought me some orchids and I hadn't known how to keep the cut stems. Until now! Thank you.
    Another friend lives in Santa Barbara and he said that a lot of the greenhouses that grew orchids in Carpenteria had converted to growing marijuana.

    I love flowers and I love being able to take care of them I used to use a spray bottle directly on the flowers, and the sugar solution, plus cutting the stem diagonal which i see you do, and i didn’t hear you mention the importance of the diagonal cut... thanks darling!

    what the sugar does is it acts as a glucose to feed the cells so the cells can keep the (whatever it is) alive :)
    that's why sugar helps with bursts of energy and keeps the flowers or plants fresher for longer :)

    • @ryanjofre
      @ryanjofre 2 года назад

      @@MillieTV. Change the water every five days or so.
      Add some sugar to the fresh water and put fresh cuts on the stems again at a 30 degree angle.

    Can you dissolve some honey in water, let it cool, and leave the flowers in that solution? I understand that honey has antibacterial properties.

    Thank you for this. I have fresh cut roses right now. I live in a basement apartment and the roses are doing well.I have 3 windows and decent sun light down here. Can I put other flowers down in a basement ? and what kind. Thank you

    • @NellFosterjoyusgarden
      @NellFosterjoyusgarden 9 лет назад +1

      Hi Tomisha Moore - I'm glad you like flowers too! Cut flowers have a limited life because they've been cut away from the plant, their source of life. You can put almost any cut flowers in a basement because they're not growing any more & don't need the sun. Actually, direct sun shortens the live of cut flowers. Roses typically need a lot of sun & they're doing well in you're living space. Just be sure to cut the ends of the stems & change the water every 3-6 days. Thanks for watching! Nell
