Paul Gilbert's picking is INSANE, and it's all because of his incredible hand sync skills! His use of legato + picking insures that his hands stay a well-oiled machine and perfectly locked into the groove. This half-picked pattern I'm gonna show you on Weekend Wankshop 356 is the perfect lick to practice to capture some of PG's magic! Let's get into it!

The best thing about Paul is how much fun he's having!
Had an opportunity to see him live before/while visiting a friend in a neighboring city (part of the travel plans)....def regret not going
The one true uncle of the guitar world. My absolute favorite channel for getting more better at guitar. Thanks, Uncle Ben.
Tru Dat. Ben helped me to get way bester
"I like things that are nice," shred ie knight
Paul Gilbert has such a great spirit man. Really love Paul's whole vibe. His playing is phenomenal but attitude makes him a living legend .
Nice shirt! One of my favourites. An underrated gem from Coppola.
Indeed it is!
Ben’s patreon is worth every cent. Been a subscriber for years and I’m always surprised
Really appreciate your lessons Ben . You are a great teacher and really awesome guitarist.
I appreciate that!
Thanks for the lesson Uncle Ben!! My descending 6's have been around stepdad level for a while, so this is exactly what i needed!!
You can do it!
I’m amazed that Ben doesn’t have at least 8 gamillion subscribers. Another great lesson old boy!
Uncle Ben…your lessons are more valuable than you can imagine…thank you so very much 👍
Happy to hear that!
Another great video Uncle Ben💪🏽
Also good for learning how to get better at starting a fast alternate pick from an upstroke. If you're really well versed in economy picking, you probably already have this to some degree, but I suspect most guitarists are simply a lot more used to starting with a downstroke and will need work on building up the muscle memory to go 'up down up' quite fast.

EXCELLENT...Don't forget about your version/lesson on "BEAT IT"!!!
I'm a simple man - I see anything Paul Gilbert, I press 'like'
That's a solid policy.
The thing I’ve always loved about Paul Gilbert is that he always looks like he’s having so much fun playing plus he just seems like such a nice guy in general, I’d love to meet him someday
I met him in Berlin Germany back in 1993, and he’s one of the coolest guys I’ve ever met..
I could go on about the story, but I scored a meet and greet ticket to meet Mr Big whom was opening for Aerosmith that night. I didn’t actually know it at the time.
I met Paul. He was asking me “Wow how cool is this, you’re a 19 year old kid and stationed in Berlin “ and I’m like “You’re a rock god opening for Aerosmith on a European tour right now.”
@@jackhaugh Nice, also congrats on your work in Berlin. That's also awesome
King Edward's influence strikes again. Did not disappoint, Ben. Thanks🤘
Thanks for the keys to the Lamborghini Uncle Ben!
Excellent and cool as can be! I never tire of hearing you play.
The fact he’s a blues dad now only makes it more wild when he unleashes the beast. You gotta love him.
Paul Gilbert is a guitar wizard!! I particularly like when he was in racer x is solo work is good now but I just preferred the days of racer x better..btw Ben your a outstanding guitar player one of my favorites here in RUclips also love the white and black tiger striped charvel 👍🎸🤘
Thanks! The white Tiger is a Suhr ;)
paul at racer x ❤🤘
you're great teacher. LOVED the free content, thank you
You're very welcome!
Thank you, this is really cool and fun👍👍👍
Paul definitely got this concept from Spanish fly. Lynch did the same in his Into the fire solo too. A great way to add stamina and bite to stepdad's love lives worldwide.
Uncle Ben uploads a video breaking down an Uncle Paul lick. I can't think a more better excuse to pick up the guitar 🫡🎸
I'm a big fan of Mr. Gilbert's legato techniques.
great lesson and love the shirt
Paul Van Halen 😀!!! super lick !! thanks and Hello from Normandy,France !!!
I like knowing the key before you dig in. Thanks Ben!
Yes you rock!!!
Love this green Tele
Thanks Uncle Ben for breaking things down! PG so awesomely fast and cool,
Much luv👍
My pleasure!

Great video but above all, really dig the t-shirt! Best Dracula version hands down
Totally agree!
"I dont do much fast picking..." ~Pablo Gilberto..
I love Pauls playing.
Love that shirt too Uncle Ben!!
Ahh the old 'Colorado Bulldog' for those of us without foot-long fingers
Cool with hand write tabletur licks and those up and down picking ☝️👍😁 Never stop that ☝️👍😁
Fuzz Universe is one of the nastiest riffs ever written
That’s a kickass shirt! 😍
Yes!!!!
Giving us the grimey grip on grampy Gilbert's gui5ar game.
Yeah Van Halen does this a lot too, often in smaller fragments though.
I think a lot of teachers (like he ones I had back decades ago) teach the left hand primarily as thats where there are a lot of firm rules for all that can be put on a sheet of paper. I think Troy Grady's tips on right hand picking are incredibly valuable (as Ben already knows) where things like pick depth and angling, right hand anchoring are things that kind of need to be seen in video and can really be dramatically different for different players (ex: Marty Friedman). I never had a teacher explain how to approach the right hand before the age of interwebz and it was easily the biggest impediment to my speed and performance.
Thanks for this Uncle Ben! I've been working with the weekend wankshop #269 exercise and I bet this approach would help with that as well!
I was in a guitar store in a big canadian city and there was a flyer that paul gilbert was doing a clinic and i had one hour to spare.
I was never a shred guitar player. I had simple blues chops and small phrases or single string licks that were more in the indie rock or punk rock vein.
I had friends who were guitar shredders and i knew who paul gilbert was.
I went to the clinic, in a church and watched him play fluently and...just...mesmerizingly.
When it cams to a q and A, I was the only guy who asked a non guitar question.
Paul was dressed in a white suit and when the mic came to me, instead of passing the mic, I made him laugh by asking him who his tailor was. In the lineup he shook my hand and thanked me for coming out. I asked him for his guitar pick and he gave me 2 of them from his pocket with his name on it.
I turned away from a lot of classic rock in the 80's and went more college rock. i never really liked much of the los angelese hair metal or related bands.
Still, I respect the work all those great players put into the instrument.
If you see music like a painting, and accept there's value in highly detailed paintings and simple paintings like a rothko, then it's easy to have admiration for many styles of playing.
Paul was one of the nicest musicians i've had a brief encounter with. Definitely get good vibes off the guy.
Uncle Ben I love your videos. Lol
Glad you like them!
Paul Gilbert lesson 10 days ago....how d'fuk did I miss this? What time is it? Where am I???
Mann that tely sounds killer in that patck.
I can’t get my hand fingers to do this.
All I can say is wow it really works awesome
This title is obvious truth but I’ll watch
I absolutely love this lesson but I have to break in and say something... I disagree with the pick only being 1 2 3 4 if the hammer-on notes are supposed to have equal amount of time as the picked notes therefore the count should be 123456 with the pick landing on 1456
awesome, do you think this approach was used in the final run of the “technical difficulties” theme?
That’s exactly what you’re hearing, yeah!
marvellous
Mashin rope??? Yes please
with your words - give a man a fire and he's warm for a day but set fire to him and he's warm for the rest of his life
The wisdom of the late great Terry Pratchett!
There’s a reason why he’s one of the best ever lol
Good shit mang. Paul Gilbert is god. When are you doing Helstar's Nosferatu beginning to end?
Small correction;
Uncle Ben's Picking is INSANE..
Hi uncle Ben
Hello!
What's the intro song? Sounds amazing
Thank you! It’s an original of mine called The Departure, solo album coming soon!
@@BenElleryou need an east TN/WNC tour with a stop in Asheville to support your album.
I wonder why Paul start with the legato and not the picking? is it to get the timing and feel down - i.e. the legato part is easier and forms the feel of the entire phrase?
Thanks Ben. Was working on your downslanting up escape thing and noticed descending is harder. Any tips? Or exercises or just keep going!? 😊
The thing I don’t understand is why is there a distinction between the picked and legato notes.
🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
Woodshed pickups??
Yup
I have been practicing this on a scale that I know, but it never sounds as good as when you do it, even at slow speeds. Going to stick at it. I am sure I am doing something wrong. I think the pulloffs are harder than the hammerons.
Rushing hammer ons: Guilty as charged.
Hey Uncle B. You should do a break down of “Daddy, Brother, Lover, Little Boy”. It’s my white whale. I just can’t get it up to speed.
Thanks Uncle Ben. Say hi to Aunt Jemima for me
Is your delay causing the illusion of thirds ?😂
I want paul gilbert to be my granddad, uncle ben
The picking marks on your tab do not match what you’re actually doing. In the descending part of the lick, you are playing down up down on the picked notes, and then up picking before the pull offs.
you actually didn't need to put the word picking in the title
What if I don't believe in mashin' rope before marriage?
lots of notes but doesn’t say anything. i’m not a fan of shredders. it’s all pretty much the same and comes across as basically “practice” noise. 🤠
Hey man, went to your channel to hear you show us all how it’s done and didn’t see any playing or music. Looking forward to you sharing with the rest of us. Cheers.
Awesome riff, I'm gonna practice it daily. Thanks Favorite Step Dad, Uncle Ben! 😁
He's using a drill, dummy!
... But no, nice to see you highlight Gilbert. He's a VERY interesting guitarist. Used to be a huge Buckethead fan as a teenager, and man, the influence is clear-as-day.
First step kid
I suck at guitar Ben perhaps because God never wanted me to play it. He would have miracled me better by now I just need to take the hint
*UNCLE BEN!*
HI!
