  • People are struggling all across the country, and Illinois is no exception. There are several communities across the state where people are living below the poverty line. Poverty is measured in the United States by comparing a person’s or family’s income to a set poverty threshold or minimum amount of income needed to cover basic needs. The Census Bureau determines poverty status by using an official poverty measure (OPM) that compares pre-tax cash income against a threshold that is set at three times the cost of a minimum food diet in 1963 and adjusted for family size.
The OPM uses calculations of these three elements-income, threshold, and family-to estimate what percentage of the population is poor.
In this video, we are taking a look at the ten counties with the highest percentage of people living in poverty.

I previously did a video on the poorest Illinois counties, based on the lowest median household incomes. That video can be found here: ruclips.net/video/UNRNGLG07CA/видео.html

Three of the most impoverished counties have a state university in them and another has a private college. That’s pretty insane!

Amazing how physicians are always at the top of the earnings scale, even in these poorer counties!

Village and City are forms of government in Illinois. There are tiny cities and there are villages that are large communities in the Chicago suburbs.

I was born in Union County, but grew up in Jackson County. I don't know how accurate these statistics are. You can live a lot better on $50k a year in Union County than you can on $100k in Chicago.

My part of Illinois (southern), surprised that Franklin county wasn't included in your video.
Love your work, keep it up.

Thanks! Franklin County comes in at 16.4%, so not quite as bad as some.

It’s funny, the statistic I looked at states that Zeigler has a higher median income than Marion. I live in Zeigler and this town is extremely impoverished although there are a few houses that have a decent amount of income.

Macomb has relied on WIU for many years. Sadly, with the decline of the number of students, and nothing to do but going to bars, and shopping at Walmart, the town has gone down hill quickly.

Lawrence County has a flourishing Methamphetamine Manufacturing Operation which brings in money from Indiana and many surrounding counties, but this income cannot be reported to the IRS.

  • @orion3706

I'm surprised McDonough, Champaign, and Lawrence counties were on the list.

    • @johnbrierton1921

Until Macomb stops relying on WIU the poverty line will go down in McDonough County. We have three factories (NTN Bower, Pella, and Hager), but they really pull enough attention to a town with nothing to do recreational wise.

    • @Bumper776
      @Bumper776 18 дней назад

Yes, especially since Lawrence County has a flourishing Methamphetamine manufacturing operation going.

The three university towns have lower rates of home ownership (rental properties for college students) and their poorest people are in the 18-24 age range. That is to say, college students. Might skew the results.

All those poor counties in southern Illinois add up to a good amount of people. They still have to shop somewhere, and even those that live closer to Marion are aware of the high sales taxes. That's why they all come to Paducah, KY, and only pay 6% sales tax. And, before heading home, they fill up their tanks for 50 cents (or more) LESS per gallon. I know. I retired here from Springfield, Illinois. Glad to be paying 60% less in property taxes too. Life's good in Kentucky! We appreciate y'all supporting our economy. Still can't understand why more of y'all don't just escape!?!?!

Are the students in the “university” counties being counted as residents? College students are understandably poor while attending school. I noticed the difference in the age categories with reference to the scholastic institutions.

The waterfall depicted during the Galesburg segment. Where is that located?

    • @StuckInTheKernfield

I’m not sure. The footage company didn’t have a location specified for it. I was just going for a rural vibe with that clip.

About half of the population in Knox County is on some sort of public assistance according to the local Department of Human Services I talked to. When manufacturing folded up it hit us hard. Most people who work in manufacturing still have to commute to either the Quad Cities or Peoria (about an hour in either direction). People still think those jobs are going to come back for some reason. It’s very depressed and the crime rate is horrible.

I was shocked that Edgar county wasn't on there. It's a teensy county over run with rundown homes, little sneeze you missed the turn off towns.. what i mean by that is that there's maybe 4 or 5 if lucky that
make up this county. Paris is the City, the others are those types of towns that you usually envision being in one of those scary backwoods killer movies..i joke but if you lived here, you'd understand. Rt 1 has chrisman, quaint but most homes look abandoned and they are not and people are friendly enough to say hi..but just don't hang iut. They call themselves chrismanites. a LOT of history n long family lineage ties. Paris is on main roads, it's ok. People are moving away due to no work, what they feel is a corrupt law and is overpopulated by drug dealers n the users. It's also oddly enough, competitive. I've noticed a huge increase of homes being sold and sadly, many of these homes are absolutely gorgeous n historical but selling cheap just to get out. Those that have stayed still,i believe is due to 3 reasons..1) they are older and settled and/or some of them are living in homes that have been in the family for generations. 2. They can't afford to move, but can't afford to stay..they are stuck. 3. They are too high to care. They used to have a work camp but sadly it closed however; the hospital that once was nothing more than a clinic is now one of the best around. They have grown and keep growing. Outdoing carle, union, etc.

Most of the poorest places in Illinois are in the southern part of the state. I thought Carroll county would be on the list. I think I asked about that on another video but you said that income in Carroll County is average.

Champaign surprises me. All the counties down south were as expected. Sort of like a different country down there.
