As a San Antonio born and raised boy growing up with the Spurs, Robinson, TD, Manu, Tony, and now coach Pop...I can only say how proud I am to have supported such wonderful people. GOAT!! Go Spurs Go!
The best thing about all the Spurs HOFers is they did it the right way with dignity and class. As a fan you can be proud of them. Never stop being you Pop.
Pop fired the previous coach because he wanted the job. Bob Hill had led the Spurs to the playoffs the previous year. In 96-97 he had to deal with an injured squad. Pop fired him, took the coaching position and maintained his position of president of Basketball operations... In short he started a coup that would make the cast of game of thrones blush. Imagine getting fired for being late for work but you had a legitimate reason for being tardy like a car accident. Now imagine that your boss took your car away when firing you and the insurance check for the damages. THAT'S WHAT POP DID. He took the team maintained the tank and road to glory on a 1st round pick called Timmah! I'll love the Spurs but I cannot love pop
@@jeepneygang It’s true. There was an ExpressNews writer who chastised Pop for doing such. Some Spurs fans felt the same thing even after winning the 1999 Title. That suspicion and disappointment towards Pop gradually faded from 2003-05, after clinching Titles 2 and 3. Pop knows the animosity for sure. So he and trusted people (RC, Will, and Tom) basically did their best not to screw having a generational talent in Timmy. 5 Championships ain’t that bad, though there were painful missed opportunities for more. And if Bob Hill is really that good, how come it took him almost a decade since the firing to coach another NBA team? Bob Hill coached the Spurs into Playoff contenders. Pop created a culture and system of Title contenders year after year, in addition to life lessons in action.
You could tell Pop was sorta bewildered during the first part of his speech (like he couldn't believe he was where he was at that moment, and got a bit emotional too), but then the *instant* he sees his grandkids stand up, he takes his speech to a whole 'nother level, and just pulls out all the stops by getting everyone in the audience smiling, laughing, and enjoying the ride that is Pop's special verbal tirade of wit, humor, and authenticity. If there was *any* doubt he wasn't already the GOAT basketball coach, then this has undeniably cemented him as just that. Hell, he might even be the GOAT of Iife coaches too! Freaking love this man......thank you for being you, Pop!
I'm 34 and been a die hard Spurs fan since I was 10. It's just a game but this made me so happy to see all the guys together, Pop more than anyone deserves this. Hands down the greatest coach the NBA has seen. GoPopGo!!!! Also we need to see our man R.C. in the HOF.

CONGRATULATIONS TO POP TONY AND BECKY FROM THE FIRST SPURS FAN IN NEW YORK CITY 1974 WHEN MY HERO GEORGE ICEMAN GERVIN ARRIVED IN SAN ANTONIO AND EVEN AT 65 YEARS OLD I STILL LOOK LIKE MY TWIN BROTHER JAMES JIMMY SI CAPTAIN LATE SILAS
Thank you Pop for being a tru genuine amazing person. Thank you so much for bringing care and love in the sport putting them first. Thank you thank you and... thank you ❤
You inspire me from across the pond man! From someone who grew up playing rugby in the north of England, a country where basketball was rare to come across especially up here all those years ago, you and your team made me fall in love with the game of basketball. Watching the beautiful ball movement and seeing the cogs all work together like nothing I’ve seen in team sports ever. To then learn about your character, your humour, your beliefs, your passion for people. You sir are a true role model for life. Love you forever pop! Go Spurs Go!!! 🖤🖤
As an admirer of his one-word, no-nonsense answers; it is a delight seeing Coach Pop talk for almost half-hour. It is an overdue, long time coming. His speech is so engaging I caught unaware it has reached the 20-plus minute mark. It's nice to hear names that whom he met and credited along the way; to hear the story how he was "seduced" by the game. True to his "It is not about me" and "Life is always bigger" lines, most of his speech is credited to likes of Larry Brown, Don Nelson, RC Buford, Will Severing, Tom James, and the already-HOF Spurs players. On top of that, his family; his grandkids in particular. The "nudge" that I only have is he and Tim Duncan should both inducted in the same year. Congratulations and very well-deserved, Coach Pop.
honestly, is there a better coach in all of sports than this guy? the only ones in the debate are belicheck and phil jackson, and they had god level rosters that pop only really had once or twice.
What you think and plan for is not matched to what you go through and feel. You can imagine life but always, the life that is cast before you is unimaginable. - f●papa-
I noticed how mum he was about getting the job in SA... Oh that's right because it's shady. Pop was hired as the president of Basketball operations for the Spurs. Then he organized a coup in order to supplant Bob Hill as the head coach while maintaining the president job. The Spurs have gone to the playoffs the previous year. However during the season of 96. The Spurs we're riddled with injuries and they had a bad record. Pop used that to Fire Hill. Then he purposefully continued to tank that season in order to land the #1 pick in 97... Tim Duncan. Pop had two of the best players and permanent job security in less than a year.
It ain't easy to win even with Duncan and Robinson. And he didn't have prime Robinson after the injury anyway. And other than those two, the spurs always could turn mediocre players into key players for the team
@@jeepneygang Speaking of tanking (true or not), who've thought they still got the first pick considering 2 (or 3) lottery balls belonged to Boston? And assuming Bob Hill remains the Spurs coach following the lottery, do you think he will go out of his way and get to visit Timmy in the Virgin Islands so to know him and his family/friends days before the Draft? Which reminds me. When Bob Hill was sacked, it was not just out from Pop's decision. He also received a credible feedback from Avery Johnson -- the same player that rallied the team when the Spurs began lockout-shortened 1998-99 season with 6-8 record and reportedly a loss away to fire Pop. Relationships. It seems Bob Hill only see the Spurs he coached as players, not human beings having life outside the hardwood. That's why when the 1996-97 season riddled with injuries, it was not an excuse for him to be fired because players don't care about his predicament either.
Never really like this coach, he’s rude to his players “you guys sit there, don’t speak just sit there” I mean come on these are grown men and HOFers he’s talking to.. he’s lucky he had great players. His speech put me to sleep.
Probably Pop will show up, and the only one will do from Spurs organization. There are things that NOT let bygones be bygones. He’s a traitor, continuing and proving the Judas legacy to the hoops’ upper echelon.
