Welcome back to Free For All Friday, where I get to pick the song. 😉 I've seen this floating around on RUclips long enough and had to check it out. Let me know what you guys think - but all I will say is I was VERY excited about the unexpected violin. 🎻😂

Everyone has been so surprised by this cover. I think I heard that someone told them that this song couldn't be done acapella. Proved them wrong.

Nice to see you so happy listening to VoicePlay.
In VoicePlay no one takes the lead.
They sing together and help eachother to shine.

Great reaction! You're not alone--this one's a general favorite. The guest artist often takes center stage in their arrangements, but in this case Eli was a logical choice because he has a background in metal and can really nail those gritty rock belts. But they also trade the lead off frequently so everyone gets a chance to shine. Layne has been nicknamed "VioLayne" because he's classically trained and pulls out his instrument every once in a while (check out their cover of 'Warriors.') He can beatbox and play at the same time, but they decided not to do it that way because it looked a little odd. They also had a vocal version of the solo put together, but Geoff, who arranged the piece, asked Layne to try it on his violin and they liked that better. Ironically, as beautifully and seamlessly as it all comes together on screen, they went through absolute hell trying to get this video made (several months late) and that seemingly effortless violin catch took a LOT of tries!

You might also really enjoy their cover of In the Air Tonight. J None sings quite a bit in that one ❤

The violin wasn’t always caught, but it only hit the floor hard once and fortunately it wasn’t damaged. People have already suggested Warriors (he plays violin all the way through that one.). But it isn’t an accompaniment, rather it’s an added voice. And since fans love his violin playing, keep watching. You never know when it will show up!

Everyone has trouble turning this video off until all of the music is done.... so beautiful. You should listen to their cover of Warriors - it's the first (and only other) time that Layne pulled out his violin, and it earned him the nickname VioLayne. I love this a LOT - but Warriors is still my favorite.

And how fun to realize the end of the video that is a sneak peek at a patron perk - the karaoke track. ❤

First time I saw this, the violin caught me by surprise too. Had to rewind to see where it came from. lol. Added a nice touch though.
Suggesting a couple of my favorites for when you come back to VoicePlay: their cover of Aerosmith's Dream On feat Omar Cardona, and the cover of We Don't Talk About Bruno (from Disney's Encanto) feat Ashley Diane.

I love this. VoicePlay did this on my birthday last year and it was a gift. The song itself was written by Hetfield for his girlfriend while he was missing her while on tour. The guys wanted it for the Black Album but he wasn't sure about that. He and his girlfriend broke up - the band still wanted to do the song and finally talked him into it as a song for the fans.

Great choice, Nikki! You can't go wrong with any VoicePlay video, though. If you haven't seen their cover of "Creep," I think it might be the best thing they've ever done (audibly, not the music video).

Thanks for your reaction! Voice Play also did a cover of "Whiskey In The Jar" which has been covered by Metallica. If you like violins, You would enjoy their cover of "Warriors".

This one was wonderful. I was trying to choose my favorites from them earlier today. I got it down to 15, but only because I thought 50 was too big a list. Try their cover of Hellfire from Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame. Trust me.

This is an capella masterpiece - arranged by Geoff. I agree with someone else's suggestion of listening to "In the Air Tonight" (Phil Collins) - another brilliant VP arrangement (by Layne this time - aka Violayne 😉).

Hi, if you like acapella groups, may I suggest the Bass Gang. They all have amazing voices, their songs are really well-arranged, and there are some surprising guest appearances in their videos. Maybe "Arabian Nights" or "Hooked on a Feeling" or "Emperor's New Clothes" to start off with

Nothing Else Matters. This is the song that my girlfriend (fiancee soon I hope) have agreed is our song. This cover by Voice Play is even better than the original by Metallica. Thank you for doing your reaction here for us.

People often like VoicePLay covers more than the original recording. I often do too. I have a couple of exceptions for personal reasons, but mostly I find them far preferable to the original.
