You can avoid missiles more effectively with barrel rolls (the real one, not the popular misconception one). This is one of the game where that maneuver is consistently reliable to evade them (along with the PS2 trilogy and AC2), it looks really cool in the replay.

Head-on tactics work the best in this game to minimize the amount of tracking the missile has to do. You are correct that the AI is much better at dodging missiles for this game. And on your point, I agree speed is king in this game. It wouldn't be smart to get sucked into a low-speed turning fight because the enemy has competent teammates and you have jack shit, but instead take a page from IRL and keep your speed up and force head ons and slashing (boom and zoom) attacks. You also learn to actually respect a Missile Lock and Warning on your HUD.

Solid eview all-round! One of the greatest things about X that I don't think you mentioned is that bar on the right telling you the health of your allies or how close the superweapon is to charging. I admire AC5 for trying to create mission variety but it wasn't implemented brilliantly, leading to frustrating gameplay where you just suddenly lose without warning because "oh your allies got defeated" (and of course absolute wastes of missions like Final Option). In X, losing is less of a surprise and if you clinched it by just a few seconds, you get to know that.

This game was my first AC game and it's still my favourite. It's funny how brutal the SAM's and helicopters are this game compared to the other games, as i played the other games i expected them to annihilate. It's weird that this game has featured that the newer games lack, like the ability to change aircraft from the pause menu and you can see the enemy health on the radar. As for the compressed audio, i love it and i would never give it away. I wish the radios we had in army training had such a good sound quality, as you couldn't make out anything that was said, if there was anything other than air between the us.

I agree with Ace mode being stupidly hard for this game, but it needs to be complete if we want to unlock the Fenrir and play with it. But if you unlock the Falken with the laser by default as secondary weapon, boy oh boy this thing is broken, just being near the target one shot it instantly and it last at least ten seconds. So having this thing in Ace mode makes you more op and makes it more easy, especially against Fenrir since camo or not, laser will one shot them without the need to lock on.
One variant of retaking the capital Griswall can be hard to obtain due to not having any hints of what to do, but here's how to unlock it: First deal with the enemy in the steps, to allow the Skylla unit to move on the jammer. Then go for Monte Breeze to intercept the cargo planes under the jamming cover. Third step is to go reclaim the Sachana airbase now cleared of aerial units by escorting the choppers. Next go to deal with the jammer and you will immediatly notice something, the Skylla unit is nowhere to be seen and you will play the mission variant where they are not there, because they aren't, back to briefing you will learn that they reached capital already and that will trigger the third and last variants of the mission to take back Griswall, no spoilers of how the mission play though

Thank you so much for reviewing it! You did a great job judging it fairly!
The audio compression is definitely a platform issue, as the PSP used a proprietary audio codec from Sony that can be traced back to their MiniDisc players.
In PPSSPP, it's infinitely more playable as you get stable 30 fps no matter which situation - during some of the stages, the console would experience quite severe slowdowns. Outside of that, I was surprised back then at just how much of a full game it was due to the replayability with the branching paths, all of the unlockable stuff, the big plane roster...
This game, along with God of War: Chains of Olympus, was one of the first times where I truly felt like the PSP was living up to its name as an actually portable PlayStation (= full games, not something very cut down for a handheld experience).

While AC6 was my first foray into the series (and only a demo station featuring the first mission), ACX was my first full experience with the franchise (and it was going to stay like that until ACAH and AC7 came to the PC).
I fondly remember ACX, mainly cause it also got me through the military (6-months draft service), I actually got a PSP second hand by another draftee from the previous cadre, and on a day off I was browsing PSP games in a local general store when I found this entry.
I fucking aced the whole thing!
All missions, all endings, everything, even Mission X, all the medals, all the upgrades, all the paintjobs.
As such, it still holds a special place in my heart, and will do so in the forseeable future. ^^
Funnily enough, the hardest mission for me was actually not fighting Fenrirs with the Alect pilots, but that one anoying, SON OF A BITCH mission you can unlock in the second act through some special circumstance....
For those who know, you know, for those who dont, they laughed at me for my ineptness, I laughed at them for being dead, at least once I stopped randomly exploding....

Ace Combat X is one of my favorites in the franchise because of how compact, yet charming it is, offering a side story that really ups the worlbuilding of Stramgereal beyond the scope of major superpowers of the likes of Osea, Erusea, Yuktobania, and Belka, as well as having what would become my favorite superweapon of the series, the massive and terrifying Gleipnir. On top of this, the XFA-33 Fenrir is an awesome fictional fighter het with unhinged sci-fi technologies and a wonderfully satisfying fate.

In ACX on Ace difficulty most of the time multi-missile locks will whiff most if not all shots if you fire them from long range. The enemy AI gets really smart to the point being forced into a dogfight is actually not very ideal because of how fast missiles are and how two or even one shot is enough to kill you

Ace Combat X is an underrated GEM of Narrative and Gameplay in my Opinion and hits the same spot (for me at least) like Killzone Fires of Liberation. Both games fit in the grander Sense of Scale of the World as a whole but have their own separate Story you can get invested in. (Although Killzone on the PSP is far more important for the other Games)

This was my first Ace Combat game. While I wouldn't say it's the hardest game; for me it felt like it's the easiest. It definitely was a pretty fun and repayable game though and it pushed me to go out of the way to try out the other games in the series.
As for the weapon feel, iirc in this game your guns work by a simple raycast so your bullets are purely visual. Missiles in this game also feature a "No escape range" that goes both ways. The shoot cue actually signals the guranteed hit. Also you should try out the Ace Combat 2 remake (AC:AHL for the 3ds). While I'm not a fan of it, it's made in the same engine as this game with some minor changes and is still pretty fun.

My exposure to the series is pretty limited, with only this, Joint Assault, a bit of Assault Horizon and lastly 7 (Skies Unknown) being the ones I played.
From what I've seen, the ones on PS2, while looking a bit better and having more, aren't too far apart from this. Sure, stuff like the story and dialogue aren't the best, I'd still say X is pretty damn impressive for a portable outing.
I kinda wish Namco would remake this one, and ESPECIALLY Joint Assault (mostly cause of it's more Co-op feel I think would be great on PC, and a greater amount of players available would help it's design work better, though I do still enjoy it)
