      Gail you have said it...
For me I procrastinate because I am avoiding facing areas that I have failed in... the big one remaining is food addiction (sugar and gluten). I have dealt with many of the underlying issues but the physical and psychological dependency I have fostered is the area I am facing just now. Am just about to start on keto diet. (Physical clutter is dealt with...only this remains... the time is now. I go with God). G Ire

Ooh food addiction and TV addiction are two biggies in my life. I think it's a new way of thinking for me to ask "Why am I doing X?" And "What is X keeping me from dealing with? Good video.

@@prayersquad3391 thank you for texting! Those two activities register as "self comfort" if I'm not mistaken (I'm speaking personally in any case). I'm thinking "What is the uncomfortable emotion/message/perceived message in the face of which I am self-comforting? When should I have been protected/comforted as a child and it wasn't provided by the God-given 'carers/parents'... Thank you, Lord for your provision and protection. G Ire

Spatial intelligence: the "void" has primordial function. Clutter is more than jamming up physical space, but the mind is cluttered up with old ideas, the body gets "filled" with food. "Unselfishness" is giving room for others, and solitude is giving "space" for your invisible self. Sleep is the doorway to the imagination, dreams can actually be realer than physical existence if you develop a mature awareness of the magic of The Emptiness.

I actually find that it is the opposite for me. I clean and declutter when I am feeling stressed. Having an organized anc clean home brings calm to my heart. When I purchase it is not to fill a void but to create memories and connection with my family (like board games, craft supplies, and kitchen gadgets). I also purchase decor, clothes, and houseplants because I simply truly enjoy them. I have decluttered my entire house except the things I enjoy (decor, clothes, and houseplants) and I am ok with it. I used to feel guilty having these items because I wanted to be minimal but I have given myself permission to enjoy them. Sometimes minimalism can make material things “evil” and “ bad” but I have come to realize that those same items can be “enjoyed” and be “good”. Now if these items no longer bring me joy then yes it becomes clutter and I need to get rid of them.

Oh my goodness….again, THANK YOU for this!!! I’ve done that and now have gotten better about buying less. I’m a huge advocate of therapy and inner work and healing and yet it’s all too easy to use Amazon and shopping to cover up severe sadness. Loneliness and unhappiness. I was never a Shopping Addict nor am I a hoarder but I am a pack rat and like to be set for most situations. I had my home professionally organized last Fall and it was sincerely some of the best money I’ve EVER spent!!! 8 months later, I’ve mostly kept it up! Thank you for this super important necessary reminder and being a beacon of authenticity and help!

Hi Sarah, Just found this channel past days. You described me as you were talking of your past. Katy, too has absolute helpful information. Where was RUclips when I was young or later w/ my kids coming. My kids helped me to get on RUclips, they, Katy and you Sarah…are a blessing. My auntie (who is elderly, no longer recognizes me) would say when one is at the end of life, they are not lying in bed saying…” I wish I spent more time in the office.” God Bless You !

Well, this may be why many people have clutter, but not us. Over the years we have collected the coolest stuff--from yard sales and thrift shops for peanuts. So we don't waste tons of money--we are actually very resourceful. And whatever we do buy are necessities. Our house has character as opposed to the sterile environment of others. This "clutter" doesn't distract us from those "good" things, many of which we don't care about.
And we have tons of books and records. My books are not novels--they are reference books filled with information, many of them very unique. Having libraries like these give us pleasure and relaxation. For some reason it is felt that material possessions are somehow evil or shallow and all that matter are relationships. Humanity stinks and quite frankly I've had enough of people--yes I have friends--but my wife, my cat, and my stuff are all I care about, especially today when everything external is fraud and lies.

The reason I have clutter is because I am poor and save things in case I can use it and not buy something that might work to fix something or to use later. When I throw stuff out, it never fails I need it and wish I wouldn't have thrown it away.

If you wrote the script for this video yourself, you are very wise (probably well earned wisdom, as you elude to). The presentation is very good too -- lighting, art direction (setting), sound, etc. I am offering just a small criticism about the rapid, staccato way you spoke. The video is only 9:00 minutes long, so I think slowing your speech down would not hurt the presentation. Leave a pause between each sentence. Especially when you spoke about the hardships we all are facing -- your voice was very authentic, we could hear your empathy. There doesn't seem to be a reason to rush through such important and helpful advice. Thanks for the post. I hope your channel does well. It is inspiring!

I appreciate you sharing some of your personal journey, and from your tone it seems you really care about others. This post has me feeling less alone in dealing with my struggles, and as such my decluttering chores feel less overwhelming. I'm not trying to sound overly-emotional, I'm just glad i watched this as I attempt some decluttering and hope it snowballs into a bit more than just a cleaner house. I actually had very little clutter... until I went burn-out. The past ten years I have a lot of clutter because I needed all my time and energy to heal... from childhood trauma and abuse. So I had no more energy left over to declutter my home. Also, I'm the only one who clears and cleans the house, and it is too much to declutter our household of three just by myself. I'd LOVE to just chuck out a lot of stuff! I guess I'll have to start bit by bit...

I just want to say to anyone who feels really stressed by this message that what we need most is balance. I fully appreciate that retail therapy is not a good outlet for unprocessed grief and trauma. We should not get our dopamine fix by spending money on things we don't need. That being said the host of this show clearly has a beautiful home, right? There is a certain amount of items that can psychologically improve our daily lives. The way we decorate our homes is important for our mental health. It should not be cluttered and we should be mindful of constant intake but please do not feel guilty for wanting to get your home to the point where it feels beautiful to you. It's okay to buy the things that bring you joy and then stop at that. Let yourself be selective but don't be so rigid that you feel ashamed every time you buy something that isn't completely necessary. BUT I absolutely love this channel and Katy is SO inspiring!

I agree that many of us use material things to fill voids... , which of guilty of myself. But I don't know how getting rid of those items, helps us fill the voids if that's why we're doing it in the first place. I go shopping a lot to keep my mind preoccupied but since I'm a bargain shopper, it does not affect my financially what's ever. But I do realize that it doesn't make me happier.

I've watched video after video after video I watched several trying to get help with all this clutter and finally I found your video here you hit the nail on the head I finally found the right video, I myself was doing that out trying to buy happiness instead of getting rid of all the unhappiness that I had stored in my house I thought I couldn't breathe I was suffering from depression from death of my sisters, I lost 5 sisters within 2 years.. when I lost my baby sister I went in to deep depression, I was there holding her hand but she took her last breath she was my best friend she would call me in the middle of the night and talk at least 3 times a week when she just needed her big sis, I miss that so much..we just were very very close... I was close to all of my sisters but my baby sister and I were velcroed together and I went into depression big time and then I went through a bad break up with my fiance of 8 years and that sunk me even deeper ..but listening to you in this video has helped tremendously I'm ready to throw everything out.. I want to breathe again.. I want to be happy again, don't get me wrong I'm not a hoarder but I've got stuff that I have bought when I was going through all of that I went on a shopping spree and bought stuff I definitely did not need there's no way I can use all that stuff and it's stored away in big totes and I have 2 rooms full of stuff I want it gone, I really want to become a minimalist.. I don't need all this clutter around me every flat surface has something on it whether it's a what not a candle always something I look around and all I want is very few things in my home I just want to be able to breathe and have some nice space yes it has caused anxiety a lot of it and im ready to declutter so I can breathe again, you described how my life is to too a tee, my feelings, what I did to distract myself from depression. Which was filling the voids in my life with a major shopping addiction that drained my bank account and me both.

My life was mostly under control until I retired. I had dreams of moving to a smaller home, enjoying a simpler lifestyle, and traveling more. I gave myself a year to relax from the rat race I had been living in, and to go through the boxes of that life that I brought home with me. However, life, as always, has other plans. My dad’s wife (not my mom) has Alzheimer’s and dad was her caretaker. Once he was diagnosed with dementia, it was determined by his wife’s family that they could no longer live in the home they both loved. His wife’s power of attorney was an evil tyrant who promised many things, never delivered, and treated us like crap in the process. Anyway, their house was sold and we cleaned it out, each bringing home what we wanted. So, now I have my boxes of old work stuff AND stuff of my Dad’s. I also had no time to deal with it as I was visiting Dad more often since he now lived closer, while at the same time taking monthly trips to visit my Mom who lived 2 states away. Fast forward to 2019 when Dad unexpectedly dies, leaving us to deal with estate stuff and a tyrant from his wife’s family. It was horrible! We’re still dealing with some of that. Fast forward again to the pandemic, not being able to visit Mom, but still needing to get things to her that we had been taking to her each month when we could visit. During the pandemic, we lost two aunts, an uncle, and my sister’s significant other. It was all very heartbreaking. Ultimately, in 2021, my Mom died. That was the straw that broke this camel’s back. I miss her terribly and grieve for her every day. During the above time period, I’ve also lost several friends, either through them moving away or dying. Life’s been so hard, and I haven’t even touched on issues going on in the world or my own personal health issues. My hobby is crafting and that was always my outlet. During the pandemic, crafting tutorials and class access became prevalent online. While on one hand it’s great to give me more access to my hobby, but it also gave me more opportunities for buying product. Fast forward to today, I have a lot of stuff and I know it needs to be decluttered, but I don’t have the physical energy or ability to get it done. I’m also so embarrassed about it to the point where I can’t even invite someone, much less a professional, to enter my home to help me with it. Where/how do I start? If I want to sell/donate things, how do I go about it? I seriously need help, but starting is the hardest part.

While I do totally agree with your analysis of one of the main reasons people have clutter, my issue is basically poor executive functioning skills. Since I have suffered from ADHD my entire life, my poor memory and organizational skills severely impact my ability to keep my house clutter free. I also struggle with visual memory. So if I place an item in a drawer, I typically forget that it is there. So I tend to place more important items in plane sight. I basically need to hire a full time person to follow me around all day and help me remember and organize my stuff. ☹️

Do like to hear common sense...recently realised one of the personal reasons for buying Art Stuff over the years was it make me feel like an artist whether I used it or not. I have two sides one likes bright colours lively people and the other side that likes neatness and calm. So spend wasted time endlessly "rearranging" my stuff (that's procrastination in full bloom). Like to know I am not alone. Thank you .

I think I had clutter Bcuz I was indecisive. I didn’t know who I really was. I didn’t know what I really liked or my value system. I had a lot of “shoulds” stuck inside of me. Who I SHOULD be. What I SHOULD like. What I SHOULD want. Etc. Who knew that I was the one who gets to determine what all that actually is. Not being ok with who you are and how you are or just not delving into who you really are can make you buy all kinds of things that are not really “you.” These days I just think wow. Do I really want others to dictate my life like that forever? Do I somehow need permission to just make things like I want them to be? Things like that. More like being a passive bystander to my own life.

@@katyjoywells So true. Lol. My beginning really was just working through childhood trauma. (Narcissistic parent 🙄). It wasn’t until many years later that I wound up here...kind of eventually embracing minimalistic ideals. It just totally clicked with me. Like finally finding this exquisite unicorn I’d been looking for all my life. Lol. I was very unhappy Bcuz everyone around me and the nutso stuff I grew up with were the exact opposites (more more more and put on a good show, keep up appearances, keep trying to “qualify”-whatever that means 🙄 lol, etc).
I guess it just kind of evolved tho. I couldn’t get here until I finally stopped trying to escape my “miserable life” constantly. But I was miserable Bcuz for so long I was stuck in so much self criticism for not being able to ever “keep up.” Then one day I was like well you know what? No wonder I can’t ever keep up. What book says I have to keep up with all of this crap? Maybe life would be better just cutting a thousand and one things out of it altogether. Great video tho. Very much gets to the heart of the matter which is what a lot of folks have never really done.
Bcuz right? My mother doesn’t really love me (is not capable) is a very hard thing to have to accept. I didn’t turn to things tho as much as I turned to more and more toxic people...who also had to be removed from my life and I had to stop trying to get my mom to love me vicariously through all these other folks who wound up being a lot like her and never filled that hole either. Well..since we’re on the subject of such weighty matters. But I’m just glad I got ok with being different. In my past, that was a highly punishable “offense.” You had to be their mini me or Cinderella....nothing else was acceptable to them. Just being yourself was pretty much a felony in their eyes. And yah. They’ll no doubt call me a “loser” for it...but now I just don’t care anymore. Lol.

This is a great video but my situation is that I loathe "things" and am a minimalist at heart however my husband is the type to buy things to cope w stress. When I'm stressed I just get on RUclips lol so, he buys things and then my kids have things and then our pets have things and then grandma buys us more things and I just cannot keep up or keep it organized. I've developed resentment bc my quality of life is terrible due to the choices, lifestyle and habits of others. I feel like I live in a prison of things and can't ever get on top of it. If it was my 1 and only job, I think I could manage but the second I start to clean and organize, somebody is hungry or hurt or somebody has somewhere to be or laundry needs to be done or grocery shopping or pet care etc. Did I mentioned I'm also disabled and homeschool?! Haha I know, I could ship the kids off but none of us want that so I guess I'll start getting organized around 2035 lol thanks for listening to my whiney rant😅 I'm certain there are other moms here who know they are organized people but just cannot be organized for 4+ other people too!

Personally, I like all the clutter in my life. I worked hard to buy this place for my stuff. So I need the clutter and miscellaneous junk to completely fill up that void that is like a black hole growing ever bigger and bigger. Hoarding is everything. I have so much junk I can't see the door that would allow me to escape this morass and take out the garbage. Why bother? There'll just be more tomorrow.
The way I see it is if I can't see the door then neither can Robert Redford I mean Mr Death when he comes to call in the 3am night of the soul. I'm in the Twilight Zone here looking for Allen Funt with his camera .........anyway I'm kidding it's a good kind of prank though where you see the opposite viewpoint and how silly it is.
Great video now call Marie Condo to come over and Spark Joy. I would call her myself but I can't locate my phone under this morass and all the things I bought beneath the banner: As Seen on TV. Could anyone use a brand- new Schlidzig?

None of this was any help. I don't buy things to fill a void or create an image of prosperity. I have no emotional connection to clutter.
My house and shed are full of things I don't want or need, I just hate the process of dealing with strangers to sell the crap I don't want any more.

On the other side of our last breath is excruciating punishment or eternal joy. If you have not repented and Jesus has not transformed you, you might be in big trouble. There are some essential commands Jesus said. One was REPENT and believe the gospel. The next, the first verse below shows where someone asked Jesus about who is getting saved and Jesus said there is a narrow gate you MUST enter MANY will try and they will not be able. The seriousness and the cruciality of that statement is unmeasurable. Considering the stark differences these few phrases will have in someone's eternal destiny. This is Christ's measure of who has come to him and anyone who falls short of this will be cast out forever. In the fire that is unquenchable. Truly Horrifying. Jesus trains his servants in the great fire of affliction, giving them a glimmer of hell so they can warn others. Someone said in psalms IT IS good that I was afflicted that is how I learned your statues. And Jesus said faint not at my tribulations for you, which are for your glory. This is showing where a believer gets a taste of tribulations. And we know in the end will be the GREAT TRIBULATION WHERE God comes and renders judgement. Some things that keep us from God can be a love for money, self will, self pride, and not forsaking our own desires. Jesus wants all of us in exchange for eternal life. He says you were bought with a price. He's saying i purchased you, I redeemed you but I have some very high expectations of you. Which are to pray continuously, to continue reading the bible, to give a tenth of all you have to the church, to visit the widow and the fatherless in their affliction, to help those in need, to pray for the lost, and to go make disciples out of every nation. Spreading the word of God is not just for a preacher it is a job for all believers. We have to let people know what is at stake, we must fully inform ppl about what the bible says in hope of snatching them out of the clutches of Satan on the path to hell, totally blinded by the world. Serious self examination is necessary because the stakes are high. There is so much evidence in the bible of salvation and if you have none of it You are likely in big trouble and need to immediately throw yourself on the mercy of God and repent for sins and turn to Jesus in hopes that he will spare your soul from the lake of fire. The bible says if our gospel is hid, it is hid from those who are perishing, the God of this world (satan) has blinded their eyes so they cant see and cannot hear). PERISHING in contrast Jesus said he who believes in me WIll never die. Remember God knows whats in the heart if it is a life saving faith. Or do you have a kind of faith where none of this is really relevant, merely a waste of time. Jesus really asks for very little in light of eternal bliss, a Kingdom that will never end. With perfect justice and peace. Even in our life today though we have to give us things his way is better. He is the way the truth and the life and as the bible says broad is the way that leads to destruction. But that Narrow gate Jesus mentions leads to life. Jesus said if you seek me you will find me if you seek me with all your heart. Romans 10:9 if you can confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your that God has raised him from the dead you shall be saved. It is with the mouth one confesses and with the heart one believes unto salvation. Whoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.
Then said one unto him, Lord, are there few that be saved? And he said unto them,24Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able. When once the master of the house is risen up, and hath shut to the door, and ye begin to stand without, and to knock at the door, saying, Lord, Lord, open unto us; and he shall answer and say unto you, I know you not whence ye are:Then shall ye begin to say, We have eaten and drunk in thy presence, and thou hast taught in our streets.27But he shall say, I tell you, I know you not whence ye are; depart from me, all workers of iniquity.28There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when ye shall see Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets, in the kingdom of God, and you thrust out.
12 13But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. 14For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end; 15While it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation.
