    This was my top 10 of advice to give to postdocs. What would you add to the list? What are your thoughts?😀

    These are really helpful advice for me. I am a postdoc at CAU now. Massive amounts of data from my Ph.D. projects needed to be analyzed and published, the new postdoc project required to be worked on, and new skills for statistics and fundings in the meantime, these all wiped me out! I need to reconsider the priority of different kinds of work following your advice! Thank you !!!

    Thank you. I am in my second year postdoc. Still no publications! ( I published 4 paper in my phd). I have attended in several conferences though. I guess my problem was I took so much time to find my niche and still not sure yet! and I did not prioritize outputs! Thanks for learning good things.

I feel like this video should be watched every now and then as it really helps to take a step back and keep a broad view of what post-doc is all about. Once again, such videos are really enjoyable, thanks for taking the time to share you insights !

    Thank you, Professor - I followed your videos to prepare for PostDoc interviews. I have got a job offer at one of the IV leagues. Thank you so much. Your videos are very helpful. I was wondering if you have already posted a video on Screening Interviews for Faculty positions (the 20 minutes interview - first round).

      Thanks very much, I am glad you find the videos helpful! Screening interviews for faculty positions are not done here in Germany, so I can't really speak from experience on this topic. And congratulations on your job offer!

    These advices are great! Much appreciated! I think you should make a video about how postdocs can continue doing science (for example, achieving a “Junior Group Leader” position). Perhaps it would be something very similar to this video, but one detail would be missing (that you have never touched on in your videos): the impact factor of what that is produced.
    It is not enough to be productive (hundreds of articles), have a good network, experience, etc. In Europe, if you have not published in journals like Nature, Science or Cell (or the Nature Ecology, Chemistry, Physics, etc. categories) it is very unlikely to achieve it.
    In 1999 you achieved your first article in Nature as first author. What would your academic career have been like without that article (as is the case with thousands of people who follow this channel)? That would give to produce a few more videos...

      Thanks, and thanks for writing!
      You're right that journal impact factor, despite being a fundamentally flawed metric, is still at least unofficially commonly used. Even though it is discouraged as a decisive metric. I find it hard to make a video about this point, but I will think about it! I do have a video coming up about academic transitions, including the one from postdoc to group leader.

    Thank you for sharing. How do you evaluate the performance of a postdoc after completion as a PI

    • @mrillig
      @mrillig  Год назад +1

      My evaluation really doesn't matter. What does matter is if the postdoctoral stay in my group helped them get the position they want. And it matters to me that we stay friends after they leave. Then it's been a good experience for both.

    Where do you see the future of science communication in AI for ex chatGPT?

    • @mrillig
      @mrillig  Год назад

      I'm sure people are going to include large language model apps into their daily workflow in a meaningful way. They can't be used to write scientific content, but there are plenty of other uses, and they're great for making editing suggestions.

    Hi Professor!
    Please i have one question, and i would be very grateful if you could answer me.
    Well, I am a PhD holder and I am not sure about what title i should use regarding my position in my institute until, hopefully, i can get a formal post doc position, especially when i introduce myself or in email correspondence.....
    I am currently not appointed to any position and not funded by any research grant but I am still active and productive for my team .........Is the title of postdoctoral researcher appropriate ??? What should I use exactly as a title???
    Thank you in in advance

    • @mrillig
      @mrillig  Год назад

      Hi, this a bit unusual, but yes, you are a postdoctoral researcher since you are engaged in research and you have a PhD. Perhaps also a guest researcher/ scientist in terms of your status.
