- In this video, we take a look at the emulation performance of the Prepaid No Contract Moto G7 Optimo Maxx from straight talk. All in all if you can catch this on sale for $99 and if you are looking for a secondary emulation device it is definitely worth the price.
I test out some Dreamcast using REDREAM, PSP using PPSSPP, Sega Saturn using Yaba Sansiro, Gamecube using Dolphin, N64 using Mupen64 Plus FZ and Naomi/Atomiswave using Tetrarch and the FlyCast Core.

“Has a pretty good battery” it’s the biggest battery period for U.S phones, not even flagships have one that big.
Huh, lately affordable phones have been preforming as good as flagships. Keep up the reviews, makes a great alternative daily driver in emulation and daily life.
ETA's got a daily emulation driver for every day of the week!
That is sweet indeed 😄
99 Dollar Phone that is really sick 😎
Wicked Gamer & Collector do a review on a phone running on a snapdragon 835-845?
That's a bargain and crushes every one of the chinese handhelds including the RG350!
Technically, considering Moto is owned by Lenovo, the G7 is a Chinese handheld. ;-D
I've just this past week been turning this exact phone into a gaming console. I'm not disappointed. Morrowind, Fallout 1, all my retro stuff. Just grabbed a 64 gb sd for more stuff. I'm more excited for this project than a little bit!
That phone is a rebranded G7 Power if you want to get a case for it (I have a G7 Supra, the Cricket version). It's *excellent* as an actual phone, too. I charge 'er up every three or four days. Great wifi, decent cellular radio... Not a bad phone at all.
Wow that looks great! Def considering going this route. DC interests me the most. Thanks for sharing this! You're a legend!
You're the king of emulation!
ikr
I second that !
There's one PSP game that I never see anyone test on devices like this or ever for that matter when testing PSP emulators. It also happens to be one of the ones that I would be most interested in either seeing run or at least hearing how it runs. That game is GTA: Liberty City Stories. I know they also have a Vice City Stories as well, but, as I'm sure it would run similar to LCS, I would just like to see someone test either one.
Waiting for a sub $100 phone to master Saturn and GameCube and then it’ll be party time.
That will take a while
You might want to try out the Redmi 9a or the Realme C3, they're almost there now.
José Carlos Sánchez Méndez I played around with a redmi note 8 pro and it ran Saturn and GC pretty well. Was around $220ish a few months ago. Just a matter of time. Not in a huge hurry
@@WMARUoriginal
Yeah, the Redmi 9a and the Realme C3 have pretty much the same processor and GPU (although an under clocked version of it, that is).
In a couple of years we'll get our wish granted, I'm hyped.
You can find a LG G7 for about 150 bucks which can run GameCube. Maaaybe 100 if you look around a bit.
Haven't really done much mobile gaming lately but it's always amazing to see how far we've come. I remember rocking an HTC HD2 running Gingerbread, hooking up a Wiimote via Bluetooth and using it coupled with a classic controller to play emulated games on the go. N64 was possible with frameskips, PS1 barely worked and just a few ISOs were too big for the phones max SD card storage. Eventually got games like Shadowgun and Dead Trigger to run on it with some tweaks. Definitely wanna get one of these controllers and put my LG G7 to the test, should perform pretty well.
Yeah. It'll handle everything up to GameCube quite easily.
Nice review as aways, Its rather funny to see how a phone that costs more than a base salary here on my country being treated like a basic emulation device, here on Brazil this kind of phone is actually considered a premium for the majority of the people. When you see someone with more than a samsung A40 here you can bet this person is pretty rich.
The prepaid carriers subsidize the price of these phones pretty heavily. The unlocked versions, while not flagship priced, are a bit more premium priced.
wow! thanks for showcasing stupendous games, ETA Prime. Loving the variety here!!
Great thorough testing! 👍
LIKE ALWAYS I LOVED UR VIDEOS
KEEP GOING
Straight talk has cheap refurbished phones or have them for free with a one time use plan
DoA 2, a true man of culture :3
Wait my phone can run a ps2 title?
@@taylorbee4010 i believe that was de DC version but the same for ps2
This looks even more powerful than a RPi and a lot cheaper and easier to use and configure. Mind blowing!
Wasn't thinking of replacing my G5 Plus yet but this model is really tempting. Seems like a real step up, didn't have much luck with PS1 emulation and connecting controllers on my current phone
The native support for DS4 on Android 9 by itself is huge to me
Wait there's a G8 model already? I'm way out of the loop
query: did you try Star Wars: Rogue Squadron for the N64 on here, and if so, how did it handle? Also, love seeing Flying Dragon. A vastly underrated fighter with two very different styles to it.
Some levels never wanted to run well on original hardware lol.
Rogue Squadron is a PIA to emulate. I play that game via LaunchBox on my PC, and it crashes half the time, even with different ROMs for the same game.
I have a Moto g7 play and that is one n64 game I could not get up and running for some reason
@Nat20 Damage I have a samsung S8+ and Mupen finally handles Rogue Squadron 100% playable with a plugin. Google it up. It works. Already on the 7th Stage.
I picked up a cheap phone recently for R400 ($26.50) Quad core 1.3GHz ARM Cortex A7, 512MB RAM, 1500 mah battery and 8GB storage. Also going to use it as a retro emulation device. Thanks for the inspiration ETA Prime!
Frankly, it seems to me like you may have overpaid.
@@Cantripping listen troll, it's the cheapest phone with the best spec in the country, which is South Africa BTW. Not everyone earns American dollars like you
@@deanbaker7080 It seems I may have touched a nerve. I'm not American, by the way.
How can you upscale to 1280x960 when the screen of the phone is only 720p?????
Could you please test out the Phantasy Star Online series on there, thanks if you do.
I would love to play PSO actually online thru a mobile device.
@@adamclark9552 I know there's a video of Nintendo Switch playing it online I think, via hacks that is.
To play online you need quake 3 arena on a Dreamcast emulator, on quake 3 you create like sum account to play online then you'll need a PSO ROM that connects to custom servers (I use sylverant) to play online
@@osvaldoy1409 I'm not bothered about playing it online truthfully, I'd be happy with the offline mode to be honest.
can you please make a video about bluetooth controllers & connectivity? i mean there is no point to have a "handheld emulation" phone, if bluetooth controllers disconnect after (ex) 5 minutes of inactivity.
@@trickyrat483 for me though this is an issue. Some emulators/gaming engines disconnect from the controller when its not used, and then do not reconnect. I have to close & open the program again, to recognise the controller. Its not about ranting, but stability with connection even when its not used.
I'm using a PS4 controller with a g7power and the latency is garbage.
I have this same phone on metro pcs and I love the thing. One of the best budget phones I've ever had
Metro by T-Mobile you mean
This phone had me at Blue Dolphin! I'll take it! 👍👍
I mean Dolphin Blue! 🐬
I recommend giving Blue Stinger a go on the dreamcast (not just for emulation testing but for playing), the controls are clunky but the gameplay/combat is pretty fun. The story is pretty good too
I've got so many older phones that would make killer emulation devices if they could be fully modded all the way down to the software level. I wish there was a kit or good online tutorial that helped people do a total conversion of their old hardware. It would be nice to be able to use them with built in controls, not a clip on one or terrible onscreen controls.
Sounds doable. Maybe if you found someone who develops custom roms who is also an avid retro emulation fan.
@@Cantripping Sounds good in theory, but those guys are usually so busy they rarely complete their own projects. Except for the lineage team. They have cyanogen mod dna in their blood.
Sure, you could buy this, but the Moto G8 Plus has already been released. Yes, the G7 is cheaper, but is it such a good deal? The higher specs of the G8 are one thing, but it is also the fact that future updates will either make the G7 slow down or become obsolete faster.
What is your opinion on the Ipega 9087s (Red Knight)? Thinking about picking one up as the Saitake 7007 are hard to come by especially on Amazon.
Exactly the same as my Moto G7 Power, except mine doesn't have the AC WiFi. Though mine does have 4 GBs of ram. I don't game on it, but for everything else I love it. I specifically got it for the big arse battery in it. Damn thing goes forever on a charge. And in my experience, Motorolas seem to be quite a bit more robust than anything else I've ever had.
Yeah I was about to say AC Wi-Fi that's bull . I have the G7 also and it doesn't have 5g wifi eather
Motorola is a weird company. They love making regional versions of the same phone. Here in North America, we get 5g Wi-Fi which the rest of the world doesn't. However; we got screwed out of the extra GB of RAM that you guys get. Why? I dunno.
Is conker's supposed to run at 20fps? I thought it was a 30fps game
Most N64 games ran like ass and we didn't know it.
Try playing Ocarina of time and you'll realize it used to work at 20fps too
My experience with the optimo had been horrible. I had to return the first one because the screen kept gliching out and now the new one's selfie cam crashes every time it launches.
Hey Bub love your videos I make time for them every time I get a notification. If you get around to it and happen to get one I'd love to see an emulation test and review on The Ouikitel C17 Pro. It seems like a pretty badass little phone with a Mediatek Octa Core and 4 gigs of RAM. I've actually been waiting to get one saying " I hope ETA does a review on this just in case it's shite".
Great video... Which Sega Genesis emulator did you use in the video?
Mine just arrived today!
I have had this phone for about six months now and I can say it is reliable.
The fact that this SOC (which while being low-end is pretty feature rich) along with a 720p screen means that the GPU and the resolution are not mis-matched like on a lot of other lower priced hand-sets that tend to put in the highest resolution they can afford regardless of how it effects performance.
Are you going to test out the s20 once it comes out? I'm planning on getting that and I'd say that'll be a good emulation phone :p
I hope. I also plan to acquire it
Have you seen the leaks of the fold 2
@@DienerNoUta Aye I prefer small phones so its a perfect upgrade.
@@cobracobra7849 Not really my style but i do check them out probably won't get it lol
Nice big battery in this device. I have the regular G7 and I love it for the price I paid on black Friday.
PLEASE do the Redmi Note 7, its very good for emulation!
Have this in Europe as the Moto G7 Power. 4GB Ram/64 Storage version. Has been my daily phone for more than a year and a half now. It has been a very reliable, do-it-all phone. Big screen, decent performance, excellent battery life still. Nfc - big plus. Only downsides for me at the moment - could use more ram, at least 6 and no wireless charging. I would have upgraded to G8 or G9 power in a heartbeat if they added at least more ram. But two generations later and still 4gb. Really disappointed here in Motorola.. The only phones I would consider at the moment as an upgrade to my G7 Power are from LG - the Velvet or the V60.
Would you consider adding OpenMW Morrowind emulation to your testing?
Please
Ty for the vídeo bro
When you check with aida64, can you check if screen refresh rate is 60hz? It's the only thing I miss of your phone reviews and that is essential for android emulation.
Can you try the Motorola G Power? Curious if it is strong enough for GameCube and PSP
Hey ETA quick question. I bought both this phone and ipega but I don't know how get the controller to work with Redream. I have the controller synced to the phone by holding right and yellow home. I really want to play!
LOL prime first of all I want to say you do a great show I really enjoyed Moto G7I wanted to ask you ,how you can connect your moto G7 to your tablet or other Bluetooth devices
Cant wait until the 855 gets to budget phones
That's not how it works.
@@tonynio7518 i mean as something like a pocophone for a 200 dollar price
@@TheRollsen Even the Poco wasn't quite that cheap.
Wassup bro really like the videos can you give some information about the android 11 scoped storage affecting emulation on phones?
I use a Moto G7 Supra from Cricket Wireless and it is a gaming beast. It has issues handling GameCube games but it'll handle PS1 and Dreamcast without issues.
hey eta prime big fan pls tell from where you download all your games
Can you out the s9 if you can I know it can most likely run SNES, sega genesis and, Dreamcast but I want to see if it can do GameCube or PS2 I bought the phone and before it gets to me I like to know what it can do emulation wise.
PS2 is still in early development dont bother with it tbh
GC&WII should run really well

Just purchased this exact phone after watching this video hoping to do a little DS emulation since he noted that it works fine. However I can't seem to get Mario Kart DS to run at even 1/10 of the speed it should be. Anything I might be doing wrong? Tried using Retroarch and it's various DS votes to no avail....
Could the wifi card in this phone work well with Geforce Now?
@UltimateGamerYT thanks
hey man, big fan of the channel. i’ve been watching your recalbox videos to get it set up on an old PC i bought but only the gamecube roms work. any thoughts?
What about connecting the phone to a larger display via a USBC to HDMI? Is that possible for emulation and could multiple BT controllers connect to the phone?!
Ryuujin1078 I think so
not on this cheap stuff. I highly doubt it would have display out and I'd be worried about input lag on one controller let alone several .
So... Better then coolpad Legacy?
Yes, much better. Though it still can't do GameCube very well
In your opinion what is the best alterntive to Emulation Station on Android?
I tried to get the controller you use in this video yet can't seem to get it shipped to the UK.
Hello, All!
I have problem making ipega 9167 controller work. Which apps is used in this video?
Does this work with GeForce now? I have a phone more powerful than this but because it's a bit dated it doesn't have the requisite OpenGL version on the GPU
I'm getting crushed with latency with a PS4 controller paired. Any insight?
Hello, in the future could you include what Bluetooth audio codecs the phone's support? I bought the Lenovo Z5 gt pro for 200 bucks from AliExpress and the phone is a powerhouse but only supports SBC and had no headphone jack.
are you still doing a video on the essential phone?
Chadwick Garman you beat me to it lol....I been having issues with mine with slow charge
can you power this AND use a wired controller at the same time? (using a usb hub-like device of some sort? )
Try emulating GameCube on Dolphin MMJ to see if there's any improvement on performance.
Why not get a used lg g7 instead? It's just under $100
Seems just a bit low, but yeah, generally not a bad idea.
I think I could pick one of these up! Also, do you think you could start benchmarks on the Wii side of dolphin? Most of my, and many other peoples favourite games are on this!
Thank you, and have a great day!
If gc doesn't work, Wii won't

I don't know if it is a higher end game to emulate but "The Rumble Fish 2" for the Atomiswave/Naomi is a fighting game that I would like to see emulated on this device or any for that matter.
Seems like a somewhat easy game to run, works great on my PlayStation classic
Don’t a lot of these prepaid phones lock up after awhile if there is no phone service on it?
It should not lock up.
No. At least not any of the phones sold by the TracFone family of brands. Without phone service they're just little WiFi tablets and they'll stay that way until the end of time.
could you try out the lg 8x?
Does it have a memory card slot?
Yes. It'll support Micro SD cards up to 256GB.

Neat review thou mech phone, id still say XD+ is the king of handled retro gaming, thou a tad expensive.
The issue I have this way to play is, mono speaker and carrying/charging two separate devices, I wish there was a pad with a pass through so you can charge while playing or just charging both devices.
is this better than the a10e?
Yes. In pretty much every single way. "Is it better than the A20?" is the question to ask.
I like it better than my A11
What’s that controller dock you’re using in the video?
your opinion this phone vs an equal priced tablet like firetablet hd
just for gaming emulation and inhouse streaming
Depends on the kind of emulation. I'd pick up a cheap 845.
@@Cantripping well to be exact

Very likely the Moto. It has an extra GB of RAM vs. the A10e. Qualcomm 632 vs. one of Samsung's lower end Exynos processors. Bigger screen (same resolution though). Much bigger battery.

Is the optimo max overkill? Just want to know if a cheaper Moto gives exact same emulation performance.
depends on what you want to play. if you wanna play N64, it's not really powerful enough to be completely reliable.
if you want to play Sega master system/genesis, it's overkill...
You are honestly much better picking up an old flagship from Ebay rather than getting something like this.
I used to have a Straight Talk smart phone. Their cheapest phones are the worst units to get.
The cheap ones are, oh yeah. This one is a good one, if a bit of an older model (Cricket had it for 170 back when I got it).
