Looping Bach With a Fretless Baritone Guitar

- A few voices from J.S. Bach's "Fugue in G minor BWV 578" looped on the fretless baritone.
My friend Drummond Fudge built this guitar by hand for me. It's a 6 string fretless baritone with a single P90 in the neck and a humbucking false pickup in the bridge. The fingerboard is multi-scale (28" - 30") and it's tuned just like a guitar except nearly an octave lower (G - C - F - Bb - D - G). For comparison, the low G string on this guitar is the same pitch as the 3rd fret on the low E string of a bass guitar.
Check out @rockfudge_guitars on Instagram to see more of Drummond's work. He's currently building another set of fretless bari's and he's showing a lot of the process on his story, go check that out if you're interested!
I recorded this through a Laney L5 Studio into Ableton Live 10 and used a TC Electronic Ditto to loop it. The video was shot with a Sony A7s and a Rokinon 14mm
Hmu with any questions in the comments and I'll get back to you when I can!
Cheers
fugue + looper is a genius move
Yeah, I never thought of it. Maybe cause I play piano lol
Or you could use fingerstyle and play all voices like I can.
@@sharn.5285 Nice!
The intonation is so precise. Most people really mess that up on fretless instruments, great job!
He's within 10 cents on his E, F#, and G notes. He's about 40-60 cents (deminote) up and down on the rest of the notes.
Did you notice it's also multiscale? That seems like it'd be harder to me. Fanned frets without any frets... o_O
@@langhamp8912 You either have perfect pitch (highly unlikely), or you used something to reference his notes which is rediculous, or your full of shit. Which one is it? Also human hearing isn't able to tell something is out of pitch until about 20 cents on average(while using relative pitch as a reference tool). Someone who plays an instrument regularly could probably tell at 13-16 and someone with perfect pitch maybe a bit better. So my guess is your either full of shit and have a childish need to be the "smartest" person in the comment section or you have way too much time on your hands.
@@NeoRichardBlake I actually didn't, at first I would think it might be harder but it's kinda like when people are playing live and tgey dint have tine to adjust the tuning so they just "bend it in". I suppose with fanned frets you could just "slide it in"......
I mean he sounds sharp but that doesn’t mean anything, still is dope
When you are not sure if you want to play bass, guitar, cello or piano. Super cool sound and great playing btw
this is honestly delightful. my dad will like this a lot.
thank you so much! :)
My dad liked it
The highest compliment one can give
This was my exact feeling when listening to this
I eat beans often
he is not just looping a composition of bach he is looping the bach himself
nah, he just played the song bach-to-bach
it was playbach
I'm sure Bach would like this rendition! So awesome.
He does. He posted a link to this video on his instagram.
Levente Puskás nah he’d prolly just have a seizure from seeing all this new technology
Love how this piece loops Bach on itself
As a beginner guitarist, this is the kind of guitar face I'm striving for.
YES ! been waiting so patiently for another video on this fretless angel. thanks to you ive transformed my classic junkie guitar to fretless and started to work on my intonation. Keep the good stuff coming cuz this tune is freaking amazing! ONE LOVE
such a cool idea using a fugue and a loop pedal
sounds great man
Woow! This instrument compliments Bach's music sooo well! :D
I love that one can take 60 seconds of any Bach piece and learn so much, but also have so much fun
The guy was a genius
I will never get tired of hearing that guitar
still coming back to this beautiful piece of art. Hope you see this.
Thank you.
Back at it again
Awesome...
Good evening brother. Let it fly. . It is beautiful to a see a gifted endowment shown fearlessly. Wonder in your fearlessness with guitar as long as you wish . Let produce nothing but good in your humanity. Peace be with you 😌
Fugues are so frikken cool!
Dude, your intonation is inSANE. Well done. Keep it up!
It is actually quite problematic.
I keep coming back to you Fretless Bari videos, especially the Bach ones. There's something I love about the sound, if you ever have the time I would love love love to hear more !
your intonation and pitch is beyond
Someone is making good use of their quarantine...
I do this thing where the second you come out with a video I text it to all my guitar friends. The gift you have, my goodness.
FANTASTIC TONE!
Still the best performance of this piece i have heard, ever
Sick room, trees outside, barn type door, barn type cupboard, seemingly spacious (a bit empty) but with some cook stuff in it. A nice 'man cave', truly envious, as a constructive level.
beautiful…i’m speechless
super precise! glad to see you making the most sultry of tunes in these tough times
Bravo! These surprise wonders brighten up the Corona lockdown. Thank you sir, well played!
Every time a new video of yours pops up in my feed it’s a pleasure. Never stop sharing your talent with the world. Much love brother.
More fretless baritone it’s the best
Yes please make a full album !
One of the most inspiring guitar videos I've see n in a long time
Beautiful.
I’ve been wanting a fretless for a while and your videos are the main reason!
Mind blown.
I love this new guitar.
Amazing
I like how this guy plays guitar, he is amazing look at this
amazing work once again, top tier guitar player when it comes to transporting you into a whole unique atmosphere! can't wait for the next one.
great !!
I just watched it on Instagram stories and I had to come here to listen it properly. It's awesome, there's no better way to wake up a Sunday morning, I just love it ♥️
One of my favourite Bach pieces. Seeing this looped I must learn it on cello :)
Amazing! I love this fugue...
Beautiful
beautiful
Lovely stuff
beautiful instrument
Bach really knew how to make i-iv-V7-i slap
I could listen to hours of this. Magnificient!
This is hands down somw of the best playing ive ever heard so flare good on ya man
Very impressive. Its hard to play in tune with a fretless, especially with no fret markers. Excellent work!
I get a cinematic vibe from this for some reason. Just me?
Awesome work!
Ahhhh. This is great.
Clearly one of the coolest videos I've seen in a while. You've used this Looping to in effect play a totally wonderful Fugue. I soooooo loved this. A+ to you sir on your skill on a fretless finger board (I would be lost and my intonation would be.....terrible) you stayed right there in tune and on point. Bravo to you sir, for an over all wonderful job with this piece. This really worked for me.
What a match your friend Drummond and you! Fantastic instrument and wonderful music! Thanks a lot to both of you, guys. Cheers!
Dude. This is pure magic.
Just wow!
This is incredibly beautiful!
Wow !
Brilliant
i love guitars with the “reversed inline” headstock because there is more tension on the lower string, so it’s not floppy, but then there’s less tension on the higher strings, so they don’t break as easily.
This is actually a very common myth, because of how guitars work the only thing that affects tension is scale length (I.E. distance of bridge to nut) and thickness.
@@guitargirl6323 yes but that's the sound and notes, those are indeed because of the vibration between the nut and saddles. But the tension on the entire string itself is different. Meaning a long string test strength will be different than a shorter one. I think they would feel different to your hand if the strings arent locked down at the nut, like some set ups with tremolo are. The strings slip a little at the nut typically, that brings it out of tune for that reason.
I don't know if this is actually true, by this logic headless guitars like strandbergs should have really sloppy strings and there's even further difference between say a fixed bridge and a tremolo. In any case a reverse headstock is not as practical, now you have to add string trees to the lower 4 wound strings as seen in the video adding additional friction. Sure looks cool though but that's it.
@@canesalt5812 they do! Headless guitars do have a very unique feeling string slack and feel different when you do a bend. They feel similar to guitars that lock down at the nut. Same with hard tails vs guitars with whammy all that does change its string feel. The slack does feel different- to me atleast.
Also I'm not 100% sure about this, I'm not a scientist I'm a guitar player and lover of all instruments. But I also work on guitars and set mine up. I do notice a difference and I notice it on guitars where the only difference is essentially how the strings are held outside of the scale length (nut to saddle). I'm sure you'll find many guitarist who will tell you the same. If you play alot of different guitars over time very small things become more noticeable.
i just like them :) they look very nice
Very cool...
That is ingenious
amazing tone
Excellent, excellent work here. This is among the best pieces I’ve heard recently
It's a great video, but what impresses me the most is the intonation. Its so tough on fretless instruments, especially while looping, and you've really really nailed it, so well, in fact, that nobody would have any idea how tough it actually is! Kudos
Thank you finally the fretless again
i’ve always wanted a fretless Fender Jazz Bass, but now i really want a fretless bari 😍
This is incredible! Ive been loving all your fretless videos, wasn't aware such a thing existed but I am amazeddd
Very cool!
Very impressive, you Rock!
the master of fugues, love it
that guitar is so rad
Never seen anyone stank face while playing Bach! Then again I have never seen anyone playing Bach on a multi scale, fretless baritone guitar! 👏 👏 👏!
Badass!
Yes 🙌🏼
such talent. thanks . wow.
Bravo!!
Holy shit man, that's brilliant
wow!! great job
Nicely done, sir.

Really really nice!!
Absolutely amazing !!

Excellent intonation and time. Bravo.
Masterfully executed!
