  • My new BRAND NEW MODEL RAILWAY BUILD: The Ladykillers - Episode 1. Based on the classic Ealing comedy, this is the very first episode in my step-by-step series on how to build an exhibition standard layout, whether you're a complete beginner or a veteran, and whether you want to exhibit, or your layout will take pride of place in the loft!
    FOR INSTANT ACCESS: / @modelrailwayquest
    In this episode I walk you through the three important criteria to bear in mind when building an exhibition layout, PLUS all the details of the layout, including baseboard, levels, track and wiring, houses and structures and rolling stock.
    AND... I had a little run in with the weather!!

    When the film was made the front of Kings Cross station was obscured by a shanty town of buildings and this probably influenced the choice of St Pancras.

    Hi Dawn, not a tip but Well Done on several counts:-
    Inspired choice of movie and your research.
    Metric units for baseboard size, not imperial.
    Auto shuttle (I've used one and they are good).
    Gas Holder, definitely not a gasometer.
    Building your layout to IMR standards (It's My Railway)
    Looking forward to next episode to see how this all develops.

    It iconic because it is highly recognizable even though its based in the 1930s.

      I saw the absolutely breathtaking Copenhagen Fields at the last Warley. and was going to pop up to the MRC to see it again but it’s now in storage… 🙁 I recently found a great video on YT which I will study. But… iI’m not trying to copy Copenhagen Fields… in essence I’m building a layout of a film set, as I did with Brief Encounter. So it’s a representation of an area rather than a reproduction.

  • @rwissbaum9849
    @rwissbaum9849 24 дня назад +2

    What an incredible vision - you clearly are blessed with a vivid imagination. Regarding how to make Mrs. Wilberforce's house shake, you might consider mounting a DC motor and flywheel solidly to an interior support, then solder a small weight to one side of the flywheel. The weight should cause the motor to shake as it rotates, causing the attached structure to shake in turn. I have *not* tried this, but it seems as though it might work. Pull the DC motor/flywheel assembly from any locomotive that either runs poorly or has been damaged. Be sure the flywheel is brass - you cannot solder to a flywheel cast from pot metal.
    You may have heard the saying that England and the United States are two countries divide by a common language. For your American viewers, what the heck is a "first radius" track? And what are Era 3 and Era 4?

    • @modelrailwayquest
      @modelrailwayquest  23 дня назад +1

      I'm going to give that a try!! :-) A 1st radius circle of track has a radius of 15 inches. BR (British Rail) Era 4 is 1948 to 1956 so locos from that period will be my go to for this layout. Era 3 is 1923 to 1947.

    Dear lady model maker/grumpy camera man, Under Milk Wood was, as others have said, a 009 layout built by Dave Rowe and drew inspiration from the play and Barmouth. It's featured in the April 1972 edition of the railway modeller magazine.
    Gas is indeed stored in gas holders. If the ones shown in the film are the ones that are near St Pancras Station then they are still there and two of them have had apartments built within them. I'm not one for modern architecture but I thought that was ingenious when I saw them back in May! The third has a park built within it. This looks to be an interesting build! 😀

    • @modelrailwayquest
      @modelrailwayquest  21 день назад +1

      Thank you! Yes, I saw the apartments - now called Gasholder Park. The gas holders were originally located at the junction of Goods Way and Battle Bridge Road. They were taken apart piece by piece and transported to Scotland to be restored and then brought back and reassembled in their current location. It’s amazing the rabbit holes you can disappear down once you start researching! 😊

      @@modelrailwayquest wow that is some trip. Worth it though to preserve a piece of history. I've been down a few rabbit holes researching a layout. For an Edwardian era layout like I'm currently building, ladies and gents fashions amongst the usual road transport etc... I also ended up looking into the suffragettes as they were quite prominent then. Rabbit holes indeed! 😀

    Hi Dawn, this looks like being a really exciting project, you might be able to use smaller scale buildings,(possibly "N"or"TT120 ),in the background,to enforce perspective, speaking of TT120,I have a collection of German outline TT120, and I've been trying to think of a movie on which to base a layout on,the only one that springs to mind is"The Cassandra Crossing", what do you think?,anyway,sorry for filling up your comments section, thanks for sharing,take care,all the best from Scotland,Stephen.

    Gas Holder became Gasometer due to a corruption of the words used to describe certain parts of early gas systems, where the containers resembled a piece of lab equipment originally called a gasometer. Official maps may call the structures gasometers, but this use is discouraged in technical speak by gas engineers who should still use gas holder.
    Also, I would include the King's Cross/Charings Hatch terminal (no pun intended) building, which is seen in several shots in the movie - then omit the rest, as I would run out of space.
