  • This week’s guest is utter comedy legend Sally Phillips!
Sally has three children and her eldest, Olly, has Down’s Syndrome, something that wasn’t picked up in her pre-natal tests and came as a surprise. Once the ‘bad news‘ was delivered the doctor gave his condolences and the nurse cried... Sally went into shock and, it would’ve seemed, the narrative for what was to come had been set. Yet, in Sally’s own words, she ‘was delivered a tragedy but got comedy’
This recording came at the unprecedented Covid-19 pandemic so was recorded remotely.

Thank you Sally and Gi. I love Sally's honesty about the highs and lows but also the love and the joy. Our little boy has Down Syndrome and we love him to pieces and would not change him. Thank you for the interview, and the documentary.

Sally Phillips ,an amazing person . Actor ,script writer ,and a MUM , who has had to go a few steps further in life . There is no script for a family life and having known two families with a Downs child and seeing another dimension added to their lives and the fun that it brings and the added understanding needed . Made me feel humble and as a farther of three , I knew nothing about other peoples real lives and how adaptable us humans can be .Thank you for the video .

I loved Sally in Miranda and in Bridget Jones's, I hadn't really followed her career since but she's always made me laugh. Just started watching this now and I find her really relatable and funny, looking forward to listening to the rest of this.

Great interview! Sally's documentary "A World Without Down's Syndrome" is the most powerful and mind changing documentary I have ever seen. As someone with a genetics degree and probably going to end up in a field similar to the people interviewed throughout the documentary, this has completely changed the perspective of someone who, to be honest, didn't really think about it and daily saw what went "wrong" with genetics without much thought into how "wrong" it actually is. I'm afraid I only just heard of it (once listening to this) but have now sent it to all my geneticist friends. I related too much with the defensive bio-technologists interviewed and their "everyone deserves a choice" attitude, and yet, it is hardly an educated choice when the information is so loaded in social opinion (despite one interviewee patronizingly stating to Sally that "that is her opinion"). Something must be done about the growing gap between science and society. Anyway, if you haven't seen it, please watch.

I just wanted to say thank you for bringing this subject to light. My uncle has Down syndrome and he is a ray of light in our lives. He is lovable, hilarious and has the kindest soul ❤️

Loved listening to this, so much is relatable even though our journey and diagnosis isn't the same.
So true about mothers intuition, my daughter was 18months when we got a diagnosis.

Oh I got given that poem too. I HATE it too. It's so insulting and demeaning. It really helps when people challenge the doom and gloom narratives around SEN and disability. Great interview.
