I think the Dwarf 3 is what im going to go for. I've barley dipped my toe into astrophotography so something that makes things easier but allows me to learn is ideal. With a new baby in the house being able to set it outside and come back inside is also a great feature. I also like the terrestrial mode as I'm a keen birdwatcher and getting video and pictures of birds and wildlife appeals as well. Thanks for the video and the review.
@@thebamb00zler6 I've heard that the seestar has some vignetting or similar around the corners and I honestly don't know how to deal with that. I have a Dwarf 2 which I have used for some time now. I now use it in EQ mode all the time. I did order my Dwarf 3 back at the end of May, and I am hopeful that I will get it by Christmas. For the price, they are really good.
Thanks for a very good and informative video Trevor, we’re all stoked when you make another one, I’ve been following you for a few years now and find there’s so much to help me with the hobby in your videos . I’ve had a Dwarf3 on order since May 2024 and have just heard this morning from DwarfLab that a batch in now in their UK warehouse. Exciting news indeed though I’ve not had a smart telescope before. I said I wouldn’t get one when the SeeStar was introduced, though many are using one now. It’s time to move with the times😅
As a true beginner, just dipping my toe in the water of astro using a cellphone, tripod, and light pollution filter to shoot long RAW exposures, then stacking and editing, I have aspirations of one day building a real dedicated astro kit, but this Dwarf 3 is making me reconsider my path to get there. Now with features like EQ mode and Goto functionality plus in-device stacking-all for $500, it might offer a way to jumpstart my journey quicker and more affordably, and I can still work on developing other critical astro skills like selecting the individual subs and learning/practicing post-production photo editing skills. Also, in the future even if I do build a proper astro kit, having a small and portable self-contained option like this could still be incredibly useful in things like business travel, holidays, camping trips, and other times I sometimes find myself in somewhat dark sky locations but don't have the luggage capacity to lug a complex rig setup with me. I think there's a real case to be made for sometime like this, without taking anything away from the end goal for someone who wants to get deeper into the hobby.
Videos like this anger the astronomy gatekeepers like ed ting. How dare you enjoy astrophotography without spending thousands of dollars of equipment and hundreds of hours fiddling with obtuse image processing software.
Hi Trevor, Excellent report, as usual. IMHO, a comparison between this and other smart scopes would be helpful. Especially the differences between these products. Why one product might be more suited to a user. Thanks for all the study, planning, and execution of this video analysis.
If you were traveling for say work and wanted to have something to do in the evenings, here you go! $500 is definitely a good price point as well. Thanks for an informative review.
Great review. You’ll need to do a follow up in a couple months when they finalize the scheduling and mosaic features in the app. A scheduling update, language and FOV updates just went live on beta testing this week.
It's really tempting ... I love my scopes, but only use them with my daily dslr (with which I also love taking pictures of birds, just like Ashley 😉). This of course is limiting for any good data on emission nebulae. I am thinking about a dedicated astronomy camera, but usually they add so much complexity since I am used to set up everything manually on my Star Adventurer GTi, look at the screen of my camera to know where I am and how the first subs look. So as I said: Really tempting, a device for 500 bucks that can image emission nebulae ... thanks for the review, great job showing its pros and its limits.
Plate solving is wonderful. The major frustration of amateur astronomers has been achieving and maintaining alignment - 2 star, 3 star, polar etc. Dwarf 3, Seestar 50, etc utlize technology to eliminate that headache. Some manufacturer needs to come up with an integrated mount and finder and camera with integrated software to which you add an OTA. That would be a real game changer for astrophotography.
This thing seems pretty cool, it's crazy how long of a way the Dwarf has come! The app seems much improved over earlier versions. Equatorial mode is an awesome option. As usual...this is the best review video I've seen on this product.
Thank You for the video Trevor. I have the Seestar S50 and with the recent software updates, its a pretty nice package. Bottom line, the consumer will have a tough choice with these new smart scopes. My S50 is an easy choice if I cant setup with my two full scale rigs. Great scope for outreach as well. Keep up the good work on your videos, they have helped me immensely with my anthropography.
I was waiting for your review and it didn’t disappoint. I ordered mine in September. Delivery was pushed back to October and was then pushed back again to the end of November. TBH I don’t think I’ll see it this side of Christmas. Can’t wait to get it though. Clear skies!!!
I ordered the dwarf 3 back in October and am still waiting for it to be delivered. In the meantime I have watched every video i could find on it. Can’t wait for it to get delivered
The portability and travel bag is very appealing. Especially if you just want a grab and go scope. Quite often I can’t be bothered lugging my 10” Dob and base out into the garden.
Nice review Trevor. I think the dwarf 3 looks like a good little portable scope. I like its scenery capabilities too! It's something to consider when travelling for sure.
Great video! Theres a couple of features not mentioned that will be really handy. Shoot scheduling - which is currently in beta tesing on the app. The idea of scheduling my nights shoot without having to stay awake all night really opens up possibilities. The other feature im looking forward to trying is the gigapixel daytime panorama shots. Seen some amazing results with this so far, will be great for holidays and so on. Im expecting mine any day, excited to get stuck in.
I simply LOVE my EVScope 2, and even though I was VERY skeptical about this new generation of "smart" telescopes, it has proven to be even better than I could've ever imagined. It's Fantastic, and I have no doubt these things are going to revolutionize astrophotog and astronomy and bring it to the masses, at least as a gateway. These machines are incredible. The Dwarf 3's EQ mode is very very enticing...as is its price (a mere fraction of my evScope), which is astounding and HEALTHY for the hobby.

Thank you for the excellent video. I have the s50 and love it. I have the D3 on order too. I'm interested in the wide angle deep sky imaging on the D3. Have you tried it yet? Also, does the D3 have Denoise function on the internally stacked image, like the S50? Thanks again for the helpful video.
You did a great job… I’m enjoying my d3… I’m using it right now… it fies work well with a nice Wi-Fi extender if you want to image from your living room
I have the Seestar 50, I got it when it became available to pre order last year. Unfortunately the best I can do with it is like 10-15 minute images the most, because it looses the target framing. It is so bad, it loses the Moon and the Sun after like 10 minutes even with the most precise calibration of leveling and GPS tuning. I tried every single idea and DIY fix I could find on forums and facebook but the problem remained. I am now convinced that it has an internal issue, possibly a defect. I got 2 large EQ mounts that I regularly use with 80mm refractor and my 6" Newtonian so I am not new to imaging. Having said all this, I know that ZWO came out with the S30 and I also know it's cheaper. For me that's a problem. I don't want a cheaper scope, I already blame cheap parts for the failure of my S50, so I might try this Dwarf scope instead of going with a cheaper ZWO scope.
How about sending it back and ask for replacement? They could probably replicate your troubles and agree to that ... things like that drive you crazy...
Send it back for repair. Mine works and points flawlessly for up to 2 hour exposures. No way I would go to a smaller aperture shorter focal length scope that relies on AI to make the noise acceptable.
I have never had a problem with the SeeStar S50 losing the target. Maybe you should contact the company and see if they can offer any remedies for you. I love mine, but did order the DWARF 3 for the equatorial mode.
Interesting it's useful in daytime. Being a smaller unit, wonder how it would do on a small tracker like the swsa pro2? Would take the fussing around for polar alignment out? since it can be directed by the operator too. I do like the challenge I have with a basic dual purpose dslr & long lenses but this being the same price as what a new camera will cost me by next year, might be something to think about.
Cool review, thank you. When using the telescope, can more than one device connect to the wifi with every device seeing the same picture or view? Or is it restricted to only one device, and folks have to pass it around? Seems like it would be cool to set up a smart TV on a patio so multiple folks could view.
finally going into this and going to try this out..... i decided on the askar 71f combined with the zwo asi533 mc pro ..... been looking at this channel for the past 2 yrs... and wanted to give it a try..... i do regualr photography .... and i enjoy it a lot .... and thought i would expand my horizons when i am slow
Is this a pretty good entry device for getting into astrophotography or is better to spend the extra money and get a Cat51 camera and related equipment? I have been thinking about taking it up as a hobby
Very intriguing Trevor. Love my bigger rigs but one of these smart telescopes would be great for public outreach, or when my arms and back finally get tired of lugging heavy mounts and scopes outside! Dr B from Manitoba, Canada 🇨🇦
Thanks for the review. I was down on the smart telescopes at first, because of the cost, but they are really affordable now. Seeing how well they do, and how comparably easy they are to set up makes me rethink getting a Star Adventurer GTI. I hope you're able to do a review of the SeeStar S30 in the coming months. I'd be really interested to know how it compares to the Dwarf 3.
Starting at @4:51 does this identify the object you're looking at? So like I point it at an object and it tells me what I'm looking at? Star, Star cluster, Galaxy, planet etc with the name of it? I have this feature on my Galaxy S24 ultra and looking for a telescope that labels the object in looking at
nice review. i am very undecided whether to buy dwarf 3 or seestar s30. eq mode is an important feature but i dont want to wait 4-5 months to have it, deliveries are very slow. which has the better image quality?
Dwarf 3 will give you better image quality over the S30. It has a better sensor. Its 4k resolution over the S30's 1080hd. Has a bunch of extra features too
Great video! I have a Dwarf 3 on order (pre). I'm hoping that I can get a start in astrophotography with it. My dream is to someday image the Witch's Head Nebula (IC2118). You and Nico turned me on to that when you both imaged it a few years ago. Do you think this little scope is capable of capturing this faint nebula? I have access to Bortle 2/3 skies at our place in Maine. Love your work!
Hi Trevor. Informative and inspiring as always! I wanted to ask, do you still use Astrophotography Tool? or did you switch to NINA in the end. I have a Nikon z7ii on my rig and although everyone raves about NINA it simply wont recognise my camera so it's useless to me. I noticed that APT lists my camera as one it supports, so I'm thinking of trying it out. You have always been an advocate of APT, but just wondered if you still use it or have you found something better?
Ive only done SOME astro, here and there. Nothing serious, because I simply dont have the proper equipment, but im looking at either this Dwarf 3 or The Seestar S50. But im wondering how long until the next gen of Seestar Smart scopes will be announced?
Thank for your video. I'm 67 and still have my Sears equatorial 70 MM refractor my father gave me for my 14th birthday. Sadly, I have lost most of my eyesight in my left eye due to glaucoma and have trouble looking through an eye because of glaucoma/cataracts. This product looks amazing. Can you recommend a product or types of products that I could attach to my refractor and be able to view on a laptop what the telescope captures?
There are many dedicated astronomy cameras you could attach to that refractor ,- but an all-in-one smart telescope like the Dwarf 3, Seestar S50 (or s30) would be a better solution for you!
would be interesting to know what the wide fov sensor is as it's never listed but marketing advertises Milky Way imaging, so presumably its something decent for low light (unlike the D2).
Great review. Really helpful. Thanks! I’m waiting for my Dwarf 3 to arrive (4-6 MORE weeks 😢). You referred to a WiFi connection to your phone. Did you mean Bluetooth?
Looks like some nice improvements over the dwarf2. They listened to the feedback for sure. Do you know what the bandpass is on that dual band filter? With the dwarf 2 the zwo dual band worked well with its wide bandpass.
I really appreciate your efforts! Just a quick off-topic question: I have a SafePal wallet with USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (alarm fetch churn bridge exercise tape speak race clerk couch crater letter). What's the best way to send them to Binance?
Hi Trevor, du you think this could be an good way to get into the Hobby? I mean equipment could get expensive here, even with rudimentary Gear. You need an StarTracker, an DSLR and an Small Refractor. Nothing could nearly come as cheap as the Dwarf 3. Would love 2 see an Second video on Smart Teleskopes 😊
You should mention that the latest firmware and the App for the Dwarf 2 also gives it EQ mode, AI denoising and Dithering. These are all software/firmware features, not hardware. Unfortunately, these updates can’t address the physical limitations of the Dwarf 2, its sensor, optical quality etc. Thanks.
The d3 is better, better sensor, eq mode, except You really need to save money, i would go for d3. And i own a s50. D3 has really nailed it with eq mode and better sensor.
Paid for it in May (preorder for September) and still did not receive it!!! I am at a stage of requesting a refund and buying a seestar instead. What a frustrating experience,
i was about to buy ZWO SeeStar S50 what would be better ZWO SeeStar S50 or DWARF 3? I'm looking at buying a smart telescope just wanna know I'm getting a good one
Depends if you mind waiting. There's a bit of a backlog on orders for D3, I think if you order now you should expect it early next year. But if you don't mind waiting I would go for the D3, it has a lot more features and image quality is great for the price.
HEY, QUESTION....Since you obviously use telescopes alot, have you ever seen anything in one that you couldn't explain???? Id love to hear about it in a video if possible. Thanks 👍
There are still people that ride horses, study calligraphy, read and collect physical books, theater is still there, etc., etc. Classical telescopes are not going anywhere.

Umm, have the Dwarf2 and really like it. Just tried Dwarf3 tonight. I'm seeing a 50% duty cycle on the Astro mode exposures. I see a 60s delay between 60s exposures subframes. Same all the way down to 10s (didn't test shorter exposures). I have the most recent software... does anyone else see this? I hope I'm making a mistake somewhere since 50% duty cycle is not useful.

finally going into this and going to try this out..... i decided on the askar 71f combined with the zwo asi533 mc pro ..... been looking at this channel for the past 2 yrs... and wanted to give it a try..... i do regualr photography .... and i enjoy it a lot .... and thought i would expand my horizons when i am slow
Is this a pretty good entry device for getting into astrophotography or is better to spend the extra money and get a Cat51 camera and related equipment? I have been thinking about taking it up as a hobby
awesome video!
Please could you review the Seestar S30 too?
Starting at @4:51 does this identify the object you're looking at? So like I point it at an object and it tells me what I'm looking at? Star, Star cluster, Galaxy, planet etc with the name of it?
I have this feature on my Galaxy S24 ultra and looking for a telescope that labels the object in looking at
Nooo c'mon man I'm waiting for you to get your hands on the Celestron origin to see what you can do with it. It's been out for ages now. 😢
nice review. i am very undecided whether to buy dwarf 3 or seestar s30. eq mode is an important feature but i dont want to wait 4-5 months to have it, deliveries are very slow. which has the better image quality?
Dwarf 3 will give you better image quality over the S30. It has a better sensor. Its 4k resolution over the S30's 1080hd. Has a bunch of extra features too
i live in nyc will it work?
You have always been an advocate of APT, but just wondered if you still use it or have you found something better?
do you get to keep everything companies send you?
Thank you! So reading between the lines, I understand that you personally would choose the Dwarf 3 over Seestar 50, if you had to pick one, or? :)
waiting for mine to arrive
Ive only done SOME astro, here and there. Nothing serious, because I simply dont have the proper equipment, but im looking at either this Dwarf 3 or The Seestar S50. But im wondering how long until the next gen of Seestar Smart scopes will be announced?
Do you think larger formats of these all in one smart telescopes will replace traditional astro rigs in the future?
Really informative. Thank you.
Can you take pictures of mars or Jupiter? Would they even show up?
Thank you for your response. I had lost hope of ever doing night observations due to my eyesight issues. Thanks. Love your website/RUclips channel.
would be interesting to know what the wide fov sensor is as it's never listed but marketing advertises Milky Way imaging, so presumably its something decent for low light (unlike the D2).
Great review. Really helpful. Thanks! I’m waiting for my Dwarf 3 to arrive (4-6 MORE weeks 😢). You referred to a WiFi connection to your phone. Did you mean Bluetooth?
Would you say this or seestar s50 for a first telescope. I like looking at planets and nebulas
Hi Trevor,
du you think this could be an good way to get into the Hobby? I mean equipment could get expensive here, even with rudimentary Gear. You need an StarTracker, an DSLR and an Small Refractor.
Nothing could nearly come as cheap as the Dwarf 3.
Would love 2 see an Second video on Smart Teleskopes 😊
Great video, but can you do a review on s30
Would like to know what you think of the celestron origin compared to the Dwarf 3 and the ohter smart telescopes
I'm yet to try that one. Hopefully soon
But will it see the Drones over New Jersey?
Now let's see what these drones and orbs are!
Do you think these telescopes will ever make obsolete all of your astrophotography gear? It seems like it’s heading that way
Does it have a dew heater ?
How do you combine 2 stacks made using different filters?
how many drones did it detect tho?
You should mention that the latest firmware and the App for the Dwarf 2 also gives it EQ mode, AI denoising and Dithering. These are all software/firmware features, not hardware. Unfortunately, these updates can’t address the physical limitations of the Dwarf 2, its sensor, optical quality etc. Thanks.
We need a comparison to Seestar S30! There are so many good smart telescopes these days
What a frustrating experience,
Can you control the object framing?
Once the stacking is done, I would export to a smark phone with AI image filtering and let the phone enhance the final photo for a better outcome.
That's a way to produce an awful image. Properly process astrophotos using siril, APP or PI
@xchimnyx Of course and that's why I get better results myself.
How good would it be at tracking a SpaceX Starship launch? 🤔
Surprised there isn’t a built in accelerometer to aid with EQ mode since they seemed to have thought of everything else. Nice product though.
Not too shabby all things considered. AI processing really clears em up.
might have to sell my heq5 pro mount and go for this ,, just aswell i havent bought a proper telescope yet , d3 looks to be right up my street
i was about to buy ZWO SeeStar S50 what would be better ZWO SeeStar S50 or DWARF 3? I'm looking at buying a smart telescope just wanna know I'm getting a good one
Depends if you mind waiting. There's a bit of a backlog on orders for D3, I think if you order now you should expect it early next year. But if you don't mind waiting I would go for the D3, it has a lot more features and image quality is great for the price.
HEY, QUESTION....Since you obviously use telescopes alot, have you ever seen anything in one that you couldn't explain???? Id love to hear about it in a video if possible. Thanks 👍
I believe you can shoot the planets with the dwarf 2, can you also shoot the planets with the dwarf 3?
in 2 years you won't even need a traditional telescope anymore....i will miss the good old night
There are still people that ride horses, study calligraphy, read and collect physical books, theater is still there, etc., etc.
Classical telescopes are not going anywhere.
“Won’t need” is very different from “won’t exist”
the s30 and seestars mosaic mode is interesting
S50 in mozaic has better quality
You need muuuch more exposures and overcome issues like field rotattion, so... D3 imho is better
Hey astrobackyard nice to meet you if you are reading this comment then I am a 13 year old amateur astronomer I bought my first telescope a week back (StarSense explorer lt127az , so please recommend me some celestial objects that I can see through my telescope in city view and if possible pls make a vid on how to use it I am still not fully capable of using this telescope please help -thank you
Umm, have the Dwarf2 and really like it.
