One of my all time favorite character actresses. Aline had an incredible range as an actress, she could play the heaviest of dramas ( like her Oscar nominated role as the Chinese peasant woman during the Japanese invasion in "Dragon Seed") or as a wisecracking seasoned showgirl in the frothy comedy musical "Golddiggers of 1933", she could do it all. Some of my favorite films of hers are the aforementioned "Golddiggers", "One Way Passage", "Five Star Final", "Ah Wilderness", and "Heat Lightning". That she never won an Oscar for any of a multitude of her fine performances is a great oversight.

See her in "The Search." A wonderful film. Her subtle, understated acting is memorable still, 50 years after my first viewing of it.
