The "unstick" fader glitch is also present on my R16. On that device, it's something to do with the device reading which bank and what db level is set. Ex: fader 1 is also fader 9, if swapping banks while recording or mixing, *sometimes* the fader won't register to the track until it is moved. I haven't pinpointed the exact user move that causes it, but my work around is to arrange all Set & Forget tracks to bank 9-16, and use bank 1-8 for any fader moves I need during mixdown. I've encountered similar bank swap glitches on many devices so it's not a concern to me.
It's on the R16 too? Interesting. I don't think I've encountered it on my R8. But it is there on the R20. I'm also noticing it's more prevalent with stereo tracks. I'm hoping I can catch it on camera when I'm filming at some point so I can show everyone the glitch. Working with the different dedicated banks as you said is a good idea. And yeah, it hasn't been a big concern to me either, but it is annoying for 2 seconds when I encounter it.
@@GazRendar You mentioned stereo tracks and jogged a memory. First time I noticed it was after pushing fader "15" up then changed banks where I had stereo drums on 7 and 8. I lost drums on both tracks momentarily. I bet it's an issue during play/rec where CPU processing is maxxed and the delay after a bank swap is from being deemed a lower priority in the coding. Also had times on big recordings where I had to stop playback and literally jiggle all faders up and down on both banks to bring any audio. I feel like it's a processor lag. Reminds me of lag I encountered with early PowerMacs and large midi compositions.

Would be cool, and I would totally use the feature if it was there, but I'm speculating (100% just me guessing) that Zoom thinks you can crossfade your tracks manually with the faders, so why bother worrying about adding a software fade at this time?
Yeah, that would be nice. But after looking through the wiring diagrams for the R20, I'm not entirely that would be possible, even with a firmware update.
@@GazRendar shame it can’t do that. right now I’m using behringer flow 8 with it as a stop gap move. Still I much prefer a self contained backing track player. Zoom should really invest in this since most drummer I knew used r8 as their foolproof backing track player

That device has track routing for a little more precise control and flexibility, but more importantly, it has a feature called "Seq Play" that allows you to make a playlist of Projects (songs) that you can play in order. You are most welcome! No, at this time there is no way to update the R20 via a USB C cable to a computer. I actually do not think you can even do it with a USB C flash drive. Yep! On the fader view just use the Mix Down feature. Mute whatever tracks you don't want to bounce. Then hit record and adjust the faders in real time for the length of the song and it will bounce down any active tracks into a single stereo track. From there you can re-import that stereo track back into the project. This is useful if you are recording acoustic drums with like, 6-8 mics. After you record the drums you can bounce them down into just a single stereo track and then keep the other tracks free for guitar, bass, synths, vocals, etc.

I just wondered if you had any ideas what might have caused this. I did re-record the 2 missing tracks and this time it was fine after saving. Thanks in anticipation...Bernie
Wow, really? I was mentioning in the comments that the only time I lost audio data was like 1-2 seconds immediately after I recorded a fresh take and I hit STOP to stop recording and then hit STOP another time to go back to the beginning and that messed up the fresh recording. But every time I had the track clearly record, and I backed out to the project menu or shut the device off and came back to the project the audio tracks were always there. I haven't seen the problem you are talking about. There was a known issue on firmware v1.00 where audio, especially a track with multiple audio regions, would sometimes disappear. But that was supposed to be fixed by v2.00. That's crazy. I haven't seen that, but I'll keep an eye out for it. I'm hoping I can randomly encounter any of these recording/saving bugs while I'm filming a tutorial so I can show it to everyone, but that hasn't happened yet.
do you have any recommendations to do something similar to a punch in out like recording small sections to a song on multiple tracks then merging them into one track
Yeah, I totally need to make a video about this. You have two options...you can manually punch in and punch out, you just need someone to hit the record button at the right spot. Or you can record a 10 second section of what you want onto an open track (like part of a guitar solo), then tightly trim up that audio....from there splice out 10 seconds of unwanted parts of the 4 minute long track, and then drop your newly recorded audio region into that 4 minute long track. Here's a video I made about splicing and trimming audio regions to give you an idea of how it works: ruclips.net/video/vHLHkb5ZFD8/видео.html
The volume not changing on the slider is not a bug. It's in fact a very useful function that means all the track levels are saved for each song and is due to each slider controlling 2 channels. You have to move it to latch onto the remembered level for that track before it will work. It is the reason i bought it as it was alwaus a nightmare trying to remember the levels for tracks on songs.
Thank you for that clarification. I've realized that over time with more use since initially posting this video, which is indeed very helpful. You mentioning it here reminds me that I should incorporate discussing that feature into a future R20 video. However, I have still experienced a different bug where my fader control has legit stopped changing the level output for that particular track even when I've matched up the physical fader to latch with the ghost fader. It's rare, and odd, but it can take several rounds of moving the fader fully up and down on the board before it catches again - hasn't mattered if it's mono or stereo. I've been trying to capture that on video, along with another rare audio recording bug that rarely happens when you hit STOP too quick after recording a fresh audio take.
Oh yeah, plenty. The Pocket Operator video game RUclips covers that I've made in the past year were 100% recorded and mixed down on the R20. I haven't posted any of that content on RUclips. So far I've only used some of that for little things I do at work for my full time job. At moment I'm trying to use the R20 to make a full album...but that's a goal that will take me at least all of 2023. It's one of my resolutions for this year, so we'll see if I get there. Overall, I think it works well if you want a multitrack recorder for guitar, drums, bass, vocals and some synths. If you are the type of person that wants to record 3-5 sync'd synths at once, you'd be better off going with some kind of DAW and an interface that sends out a MIDI clock. I do wish it offered 48kHz sample rates for recording, but if it's easier for you to pick up a guitar and have a no-fuss recording experience away from a computer set-up, the R20 is a solid choice. However, for people who have no problem recording in front of a computer and have a nice interface for it, the DAW will always offer more powerful features by comparison.
Oh yeah? I haven't had that one happen to me yet. Did a power off/power on fix it? The only other thing that I noticed gets wonky is if I use one of the drum patterns, loop it like 40 times, and then try to record guitar on another track. It works, but once in awhile the rewind or fast forward seems a tiny bit laggy when I have a lot of audio regions. But I haven't experienced a full freeze yet.

Agreed. For the synth community it's a significant shortcoming. For the guitar/bass/drum type bands out there it's not a big deal. I think historically, Zoom has mostly focused on those guitar/bass/drums/vocals types of users. You can still use it with synths and sequencers, and you can still line up tracks using the touchscreen...but it's not as convenient as having some kind of MIDI clock/sync.

By no means do I think the R20 is a good fit for everyone. In fact, most musicians should not buy it. However, if you are worried about durability - I actually wouldn't call it flimsy. The build quality really isn't that bad. Sure, it's a plastic housing, but it's pretty solid and the important parts - the faders - have a healthy amount of resistance to create accurate mixes. The inputs are also snug fits for male XLRs and 1/4", maybe even too tight. The physical buttons are plastic, but they are snappy and responsive and the knobs are fine to use. My R8 is over 10 years old and still going strong. I think it's not unreasonable to believe the R20 will last ten years with regular use if you take care of it.

You can still use it with synths and sequencers, and you can still line up tracks using the touchscreen...but it's not as convenient as having some kind of MIDI clock/sync.
@@GazRendar I am a guitar player ;-) but sometimes I use midi files as backing tracks . Mostly bass, drums ... I record the midi file track per track from a midi player so that I can still adapt the mix. Would be handy that I can sync those tracks ;-)
Some kind of sync would be nice. Here's hoping Zoom does something there with a future update...

Yep. On the zoom website and on amazon as well...at least until the end of August. I made a video about it:

punch in punch out????
No, at least not on v2.40 firmware.
This is a very flimsy device....I would never buy this, ever
@@GazRendar ;)....true.. i d use it as a player in a dawless setup...but that would be overkill.... for recording? no way. I m still waiting for something good to go dawless. Haven t seen anything yet.....the tascam DP is a no go also, and the rode thingie is expensive for what it does.....I ll stick to my good audio interfaces and daw, which i really don t like...LOL ;)...The daw thing fucks my groove and creativity ... Take care bro.... Enjoy your new baby ;)
Yeah, I've had a PreSonus AudioBox 2 for a couple years now and I just don't like being stuck next to my desktop computer and for whatever reason the recording process with a DAW has never been enjoyable because I feel it messes with your flow, as you said. The R20 isn't perfect, but it's more immediate for the recording part of music creation, and then it gives me a chance to do some light editing. I'm still waiting for a perfect product too!
@@GazRendar yeah mate ;)
