      Yeah, I initially didn't use them too much either, but I was always frustrated when I needed to get to the end of a song I was working on. That's when I started using the markers all the time, especially since I don't like zooming in and out a lot. Thanks for watching!

    Thanks! Very helpful- you do a great job. Will markers transfer if I later move files to computer based DAW srudio program?

    • @GazRendar
      @GazRendar  Год назад

      I'm pretty sure the answer is no. The project's meta data is stored separately from the audio. So if you use the R20's audio tracks that you created and import them into a computer DAW, you're just importing the audio, not the meta data. I don't think there is anyway to also import that marker meta data. We would probably need Zoom to make like a DAW plug-in or something. That would be nice! But somehow I don't see Zoom doing that for us...

    Thank you for that clear explanation. I 've got a very basic question : can I use these markers not only to move easily through the timeline but also to select regions that I want to edit? For instance : copy a chorus bass track and paste it farther on the timeline of that track (using 2 markers to select a region, Copy it, then paste it on a further marker ? Sorry if my question seems very basic and obvious. I'm a beginner. Thank you. Ps :in that case has the target region I want to paste on to be empty or can I overwrite?

    • @GazRendar
      @GazRendar  Год назад

      You can use the markers to help you slice and trim your audio samples, but only indirectly. On older multitracker models you often HAD to use the markers to set a Point A and Point B to execute a trim. For the R20, I recommend setting markers, but then you'll want to use the Rev and Fwd buttons to precisely move the timeline marker to line up perfectly with your marker. Then use the touchscreen to drag the trim tool to cut your region exactly how you want it.

    Hey nice video, is it possible to change the tempo in between a song?

    • @GazRendar
      @GazRendar  2 года назад +1

      Yes, you can change the tempo in the middle of working on a song. However, it really only changes the timeline bar at the top. It doesn't change the audio files' playback speed. So if you laid down 12 tracks at 110 bpm, and then you shift it to 105 bpm, that's only going to change the way the ruler at the top looks. All your tracks will still be going at 110. You would need to use the time stretch function for each audio file to make everything a little slower at 105....because they are static .WAV files, not like...malleable sequencer data, you know?
      I did make a video on using the touchscreen for editing. I discuss the time stretch feature there. It works, and it would be ok to use for 1 or 2 tracks. But if you already laid down 12 tracks or something, I probably wouldn't use it for that.

    In garage band ios, or cubasis 3 ios or any daw, you have the ability to with too sliders to designate a region so I can say, for example, the first region I'm going to record onto is going to be 8 measures long no more and no less. Gargage band ios has sections, same idea. I don't see any way on this unit to select pre-set region lengths pre recording. I see markers, stretching but this doesn't seem to act like a daw or the above ios recording apps where you designate ahead of time, how many measures the clip you want to record is going to be. Am I missing something?

    • @GazRendar
      @GazRendar  2 года назад

      You're not missing anything. As of firmware v3.00, I don't see any advanced controlled, timed, recording features like that. It seems like Zoom should be able to implement some of those features by giving users options as to what happens at certain markers, but I have no idea if Zoom is interested in developing that.

  • @lricig

    can markers be used to turn record on and off to facilitate the lack of a punch in and out?

    • @GazRendar
      @GazRendar  2 года назад

      At least on firmware v2.40 the answer is no. I feel like this is something that could be added via a firmware update, but I have no idea if Zoom has it in the works or not. There are some work-arounds to not having punch in/punch out. I'm in the process of trying to make a video that shows how I handle it.

    and is it possible that the song stops automaticly after a maked point? I would like to do a setlist with a few songs, and it would be good that the song stops at the end and i just have to push start for the next one

    • @GazRendar
      @GazRendar  2 года назад

      No, I don't think so. You can't really assign an action to happen at a marker. At least not on v2.4. On some other multitrackers you can have an effect kick in at a marker, or do auto-record punch in/punch out. The R20 doesn't have those features at the moment and no idea if they ever will.
      So in terms of using to arrange backing tracks for a live performance, or to just play songs...I don't think it's a great device. You can back out of a song, goto the projects menu, and open up the next song. But it will take a couple screen taps and it's not instantaneous. It'll take a couple extra seconds that might mess up your vibe during live playing with a setlist.

    Thanks for that very useful. I thought it worth mentioning an issue I found out today with my Zoom R20 (latest firmware). With my Zoom 24 I, would often convert a WAV mix down to Mp3 for emailing purposes etc. I just did my first R20 mix down and the WAV files plays perfectly. However the two software programs that I use to convert to Mp3 would not recognise the file. I did manage to get my Cubase to successfully convert the file, even though the Mp3 option was greyed out but I don’t think I should really need to do that.

    • @GazRendar
      @GazRendar  2 года назад +1

      Hmmm...that's a little weird. I haven't seen that problem on my end, but I haven't tried to convert anything to an mp3 yet. I've been add tracks to video editing software - both video and sound - and Adobe Audition, Photoshop, and Premiere Pro all work with the mix down files and will allow me to mix the audio with the video into mp4 files at least. As long as your software can convert 24-bit, 44.1kHz WAV files into mp3's you should be fine - and that's not an oddball combo of parameters for sound files. I'll try to test out a couple of files and see if mp3 conversion throws any errors for me.

    • @kevanbarrett7411
      @kevanbarrett7411 2 года назад +1

      @@GazRendar Thanks. My conversion software is a little old now, so that might be the problem. An error message via Roxio seems to suggest that the WAV file is 'compressed'?

    Can you loop the regions? The r8 was able to do that

    • @GazRendar
      @GazRendar  11 месяцев назад +1

      Short answer, no. You cannot loop like you could set A and B start/stops and then hit that loop button on the R8. That feels like something Zoom could do with a firmware update, but it doesn't exist in firmware 3.3.
      As I sort of show in this video you can set markers at your start and stop points for a loop with the R20, but then you need to use the transport controls to manually loop with button presses each time. If you only have one or two tracks that you are playing in the background, it's fairly easy to take those sections and drag them out with the touch controls to loop them over and over for like a 5 minute stretch so you can practice. But that method is subpar if you have to create those loops for like, 5 or more backing tracks. I'm hoping for a firmware update to address this...

    Hello sir! My name is William. I recorded a project and put it on my laptop, but it can’t open the file. Is there anything I can do at this point?

    • @GazRendar
      @GazRendar  9 месяцев назад

      It's hard to provide advice since I don't know exactly where you are in your recording and master process. But just generally speaking...
      1) After you are done recording you can put the SD card in your computer. You'll find a folder with the project name. Inside that folder you'll find individual .WAV files that correspond to your recorded tracks from the R20. You can work with those tracks in a DAW for further mixing if you'd like.
      2) Or, after you are done recording on the R20, you can go to the fader view screen and choose the "Mix down" option at the top. When that is activated you can move the timeline marker to the beginning of the project, hit REC, and move the faders in real time to create a stereo mix of your song. That stereo mix will be a .WAV file with the project name as the filename and it ends up in the AUDIO folder of the SD card. That 24-bit / 44.1kHz file should be playable on almost anything.

    Hi Gaz, just heard the R12 is coming out soon. Any chance you might do a review ? It's pretty much the same set up as the R20 with a few features I like better but mainly I'm interested in the smaller screen. I was hoping they would have updated to a bigger screen but ..... how bad is the smaller going to be ?

    • @GazRendar
      @GazRendar  2 года назад

      I saw the R12 on their webpage. Looks like it's coming out in a month or so. Not sure how bad the smaller screen would be, but it sounds like it has a couple differences compared to the R20. I don't know if I'll buy one to do a full review because the R20 (along with my old R8) have served me well so far. But I might do a preview video and discuss where I see the differences compared to the older R series and the R20.

      I don't think so. At least, I haven't found that function yet. If you have a bunch of markers placed and you need to get to the beginning quickly, I think your best move is to use the touchscreen timeline tracker at the top and drag it to the beginning while zoomed out.

    Theres no loop playback yet huh?

    • @GazRendar
      @GazRendar  2 года назад

      No...no loop playback. However, it's pretty easy to just select an audio region and drag it out for as long as you want to loop it over and over again. If it's 30 seconds long, just drag it out to 6 minutes so you can jam along with it and figure out the next instrument part that you want to layer into your song.

  • @GardenParkStudios
    @GardenParkStudios 2 года назад +1

    Do you know a way to get a track to play repeatedly (gets to the end and automatically starts over again)

    • @GazRendar
      @GazRendar  2 года назад

      As of firmware v3.00, there is no way to loop tracks like that. The only work-around you have is to select the track, then drag that white tab at the end of the track and extend it out so that it just keeps copying and pasting it. If your track is only like a minute long, this isn't a bad work around. If you have a 5 minute track, it's unfortunately a little more cumbersome to deal with.
      Hopefully a future firmware update will give us a looping feature....but I have no idea if Zoom is working on it.
