Years ago when indicators were just coming out…. Abe Chavez at Abe’s fly shop on the San Juan came up with an indicator using polypropylene yarn ….very affordable dab with flyline floatant like muclin … it’s also very easy to use .

How do you move it up or down to adjust for depth. Can it be adjusted just by sliding it or does the knot have to be loosened?

SUPER SUPER simple. I just learned this quicker than all the other videos I watched, and even guys from NZ are trying to teach it lol. Love that a shop from NC did it best. I also bought this material as a result of this video. Thanks for your assistance in learning a new trick. With it being windy today, I will be using this technique.

    Thanks Patrick.
Tim from nz. Someone here in nz showed me a similar knot.
I had trouble w the tube one sliding round, then realised I just needed to use slightly less wool, and make sure it was pulled into the tube. Cheers!

The tube slides on the leader with less wool if I use 6x or 7x.

Great tip. Any suggestions on moving it up or down? The water I fish varies a lot.
    Thank you.

Use a perfection loop instead - easier to undo the knot and start over to adjust depth.

@@azurenscens What about kinking the leader after perfection loop?

Lost the needle to put the yarn on my leader.
    I like it.
    Great tip.

How much shot can be added without sinking the float?

If you can't get a hold of the New Zealand wool indicator material you can also use glow bug yarn.

It is my understanding if one uses enough yarn that it will not slip. There is a point where too much yarn will not pull through the tubing, and too little will slip, but one you get it right New Zealand indicators work just fine.

You can also use dental elastics instead and then be able to adjust the indicator depth.

Yup New Zealands slip with 6 or 7x. Irritating for single small flies and maybe 18 inches under the surface. Particularly if I don’t want to use say a hopper dropper setup. I was disappointed with the New Zealand tubing too. Great thought

it's very simple method but there is no easy way to adjust the depth and it leaves kink on the leader.

rain x works good as a float... works on dry flies also

I just use the indicators I buy with the rubber "band" tied in the middle - it goes on the same as a thingamabobber or other in line stuff - and stays put until I want to move or remove it. since they cost about a buckj a piece, save me time and effort - I'll just run with that set up
