- Today, on 1/28/14 the MAG (Massive Action Game) servers were shut down by Sony, 4 years after its North American release on 1/26/10. The dawn of the PS4 brings promise, but in the dusk, in the waning moments of the PS3's life cycle, MAG's death is painful.
I felt I had to make this video as a sort of memorial to MAG, the game that started it all for me in terms of Hardcore gaming, RUclips, and the pursuit of a Game Design career. Thank you everyone who has been a part of making MAG so special, the community, the defunct Zipper Interactive, and Sony (even though you did shut down the servers to my favorite game of all time, you made it possible as well).
We can look to other games to fill the void MAG will leave us, and we can hope for a MAG 2, but there will never be another MAG, not the way we know this one. It's like losing an old friend and is a truly sad occurrence.

@@gndnls I think that someone who is really really passionate about old games with multiplayer shut down, should make a discord server with people who would like to play some old games online again, even with 500 members in the server it would be pretty easy to do I think.
A part of me died that day. I know few people will see this, but I live my life in games. These games, these experiences are more than just some game to me. They're my life. They're my experiences and memories. They're one of the few things that give me joy in this world. People can think that's sad, and part of it is, but games are where I find solace.
I see ya. I was playing this game on its final day, and I miss it like crazy. I'm not a people person, and some days the multiplayer factor of this game felt like a bit too much, but I had a great group of friends on there, and I had more amazing experiences in this game than any online FPS I've played since. Glad you were there, too.

Most underrated game ever.
This game was like my best friend growing up. I learned so much from the friends I met in MAG and the advice from my ebonite in this game. Never thought a video game could hold up so much sentimental value but MAG did. It's such a shame Sony had to drop the servers. It hit me so hard and sucked because I could never play with my MAG friends in any other game and feel the sane great way I did when we played MAG together. Such a great game. I hope they made a sequel for the PS4 because this was just bliss.

MAG is nostalgic nowadays, I had the best moments ever playing it, never thought it would make me fell bad cause I can't play it anymore, the clans & people, it was a disciplinary game. :(
And of course because of that I will not find my MAG friends anymore.

Not underrated at all; this was a relatively common go-to for teens that couldn’t get M-rated games at the time like me but did have a PS3. It made me get into multiplayer exclusives on PlayStation. As far as T-rated FPS games that generation go, I’d rank it up there with Frontlines: Fuel of War, though that game wasn’t as fondly remembered as this one by most. Nonetheless, I would love to see a sequel to both. This generation, there’s Firewall: Zero Hour, but it requires PS VR.

I'm pretty sure I did that once or twice, the controls could be fickle, but once you got used to them they weren't too bad. I think they gave the game a bit of charm, but I'm a tad crazy sooo...

Jack Goins My first kill ever on this game was as Valor and i had no idea what i was doing, and i shot a rocket over some rocks and killed someone... my best highlight in FPS history for me lol. It was also the first game i got for my PS3 when it came out, got a call from Gamestop saying someone didnt get their preorder, had 15 min to get there...worth it,

If this game is ever relaunched, or simply updated graphically and added upon.. I will drop every other game I have to play it. I made so many fantastic friends on this game, it had a team camaraderie that no other shooter had because of the faction system. I miss that, I miss it so freaking much. I even made a new PSN account when I quit playing because my whole friends list was full of MAG friends that had quit playing and it made me sadderino to delete them. Nah men I was playing PS2 like for two hours, it just stressed me, it will never feel like playing MAG where you can play at any single time of the day and you just loved it:/

That would be nice. I never had an issue with the controls because I had never played Call of Duty, Battlefield, or Halo before but I have to agree, MAG's control scheme was quite wonky (and yes, I think that is the best word to describe it, "wonky", lol).

kyle... have you ever played the game BLACK? MAG was made by the same group and BLACK is the best singleplayer shooter I have ever played but they never did multiplayer until MAG and it was a great game as well. PS2 is better in what ways other than the actual looks?

The game still has the “most players in a console” record. To me one thing that set this game apart was a realistic chain of command. The game went one sided and it really hurt it. The game was objective based when too many players at the time were just playing for kill numbers or just camping. The game was much more complicated than any COD or Battlefield at the time. It was not as simple as taking a flag or a zone. Real teamwork was needed here and I don’t think most of the gaming community was ready for that commitment. I ended with some PS3 long lasting friends and a little over 320 MVP's many from domination. I really miss the huge battles with artillery and APC's. The adrenaline rush while defending your bunker or your neighbor's. Killing enemies while trying to fix the anti air gun the motor pool or the big doors at the main objective while been overrun. Good Times!!

I bought this game when I was like 10 and I thought it was the best game ever and then I traded it in at GameStop and I lost it... And now sitting here now 4 years later I really I wanted to buy this game now because it was awesome but then I found out the Sony had put it down... So sad I wish it was still here.. I would find so much joy out of it...

I missed this game so much I had to watch it on here. I gotta admit that I havent been the same since they shut down the servers. A TEAR ROLLS DOWN MY FACE. Smmm smm
MAG was the only FPS that really helped me socialize with people online (Got a lot of friends from the game, some that I've seen in person as well). When it first came out it had balancing/glitching issues but many patches fixed and broke things, but they got it right eventually. I used to get Grim Reaper ribbons in almost every match I went in. Competitive clans grew a lot of tension at times. I played on SVER the first few months then I moved to Raven and stayed there for the rest of the time.

This game was way to under rated when it was in its prime.
there was no clan system. they killed that instantly during closed beta when folks glitched the clan tags. by the time they implemented it, they were begging us to come back but it was too late. they systematically did everything wrong every step of the way and chased away the clans

Back in '10 I was gonna get a new console, and I ended up getting a 360... But MAG was one of the huge strong points of the PS3. Now that I have a PS4, it's sad to hear that the dev company is defunct... If they ever made a sequel I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

It's been proven time and time again that planetside 2 is not pay 2 win. All the weapons you buy are side grades, while everything else like suit upgrades and abilities are actual upgrades, it's alsomhas been tested, a br 100 player created a new account and used the default weapons and still destroyed people.
This is the only game that has a perfect spawn system... And its crazy because I hated this game And went on to play Mw2 then came back and I was absolutely beast at this game then I saw alot of hacking so I stopped playing MAG but this game is by far the best shooter ive ever played I play Bf4 now but can you imagine a revamped MAG on Next gen console? I honestly believe this could be the game that ends the cod vs BF war... MAG would shut everything down And dawn a new day for the true shooter community

There are People trying to reverse engineer MAG , hoping to create a tool for dedicated servers and to enable the game to connect cross platform , the only problem is that some of the older versions of the game are missing , if you can help us get them or have them already that would be awsome and we would get to play MAG again fast , i await your response .

I am very sad about MAG leaving. Like you said, there is no other game like this, and we will never experience another game of MAG. This game has created many great memories for me, and many others. I am just glad I was able to play a couple of games today before they shut down the servers. I am just praying that one day they will make a MAG 2. This is CSC-007 representing Valor. Man.. The nostalgia is real. I miss this game.. This was the first game I played where I was in a Clan and actually played tactically. :/ Man.. They need to remake this game or make a game like it. I spent countless hours playing that game.

Damn no! My old MAG disc got stuck on my old ps3 and broke. I was about to re buy it until I found out about the servers were gonna shut down. I really loved this game. Such a great game overshadowed by call of duty and battlefield :(
I put SO MUCH time into this game, remembering it literally makes me cry and emotional. The way this game was, it was was perfect, it had ups and downs but this game was so different from the norm of things, i will ALWAYS, be saddened that we can no longer play this.... if MAG 2 was ever introduced, no it wouldn't be the same, but the mass amount of support it would have is going to be insanely high.... and i completely agree, its absolutely like losing an old friend... were attached to it..

I wish they would updated the game to add offline bots or sold and offline bot mode so they could of earned little bit of money before they shut it down oh well
Playing with bots is different than online. Online, the PS3 communicates with the servers and the servers process all the player data and ping it back to you. There is NO way the PS3 could EVER run 255 AI scripts in real time while running the rest of the game. The PS3 would melt. lol

You think So? What about Star Wars Battlefront? You could be offline and there was still a bunch of AI bots running around as if you were online and it felt the same....and that was on PS2! Any developer that says it can't be done is just lazy.
Very good point. But bear in mind that FPS games are different. I honestly believe that Battlefront did not render every single character in real time. FPS multiplayer games require constant feedback from every player to keep the game going. If you notice in Killzone for example, adding bots makes the multiplayer noticeably more choppy than online multiplayer. Add more bots, the more frame dips you'll get. I think Pandemic Studios created some trick to simulate a large battle space, only rendering the AI scripts of a certain amount of characters around you at a time. Even so, the PS2 had a lot on its plate. I love Battlefront, but the framerate was terrible in many places.
One thing I notice in Battlefront is all the bots get kills at roughly the same rate and are roughly evenly matched. Sometimes they stand there stupid. They behave similar to eachother and the difference in the outcome of a battle is YOU and how many kills you manage to get during the chaos. Going even further back Perfect Dark on N64 put bots into multiplayer matches (up to 8) but they all behaved in a scripted way. PD64 was like 20 years ago...and the fact that 3 generations later this still isn't being done on a large scale is just embarrassing for developers of shooters. Too bad Pandemic and Rare are both gone.
Zipper needs to start a kick starter for their games like yu suzuki did for shenmue 3.

First Comment of 2024, I just can't forget this game. Every time a new fps comes out it just doesn't scratch that itch.
I would do anything just to watch MAG. My dad played it when I was younger. He even let me play one of the training segments. About 2 years later, (Jan. 2015) I turned on my PS3 with MAG in it. I tried to play it, but when I realized it shut down, I was so devastated that I could just sit and stare at the screen while hearing the music. My dad's cousin told me there was a rumor about MAG 2. A couple of months later, I played BATTLEFIELD 3, and that's the closest I could find to MAG, with its TDM being 12 vs. 12. I'm still mad that they shut down MAG. I never got to really play it, which makes me sad. (I just realized how much I wrote. I thought this was going to be a small comment!)
I played till they turned the server off..RONIN LORDS..it was glorious..team work.. I was sad when the server stopped.. I sat there controller in my hands trying to make it last..downloaded all the songs....
This was a sad moment to remember. Everyone who joined MGO on Metal Gear Solid 4 and MAG will never be forgotten. REST IN PEACE: MGO and MAG.

I was playing on that last day, myself. My avatar has surely given it away already, but if we encountered each other, we were certainly not on the same team. But like you said... it doesn't matter if we were fighting together, or against each other. We all got to enjoy this game together. Here we are, in 2023, and nothing else has filled the void this game left behind. I'm so glad I got to play it, though playing it, and knowing how good an FPS can be, means that now I'm never satisfied with everything else that's out there.
I know I'm not the only one still missing this game. I see all of you in comment sections to this day. Fellow veterans of the Shadow War. In the end, I suppose we all lost, but at least we had the chance to fight at all.

That video was great man, well said! Nothing compares to this game..I bought a PS4 about 5-6 months ago and have been hitting up a bunch of great games, but none of them fill the void. I played this game damn near exclusively, for the 4 years of its life cycle. So many good times!! I really feel Sony could release this game for the PS4 and charge a monthly fee to play. Say 5-10 bucks a month, but continue with dedicated servers, while adding new content(clothes, guns, maps). Honestly they can keep the physics and game play the exact same(that's what made MAG perfect.) The following for MAG is no joke, this game can be viewed as a cult classic :)

Indeed, it sucks, MAG was a success, regardless of what Zipper Interactive thought or what Sony thinks. Socom 4 is the game that caused Zipper to fail and because of that failure, the MAG community has to suffer the consequences. It's a sad story indeed :(

***** Your correct. MAG the greatest.. Only Call of Duty fanatics will love battlefield over MAG. Battlefield up til 2 was great, heck even BF1943 was nice and could use boats and air superiority was out of this world, it gave old skool gamers like me hope that games will bring more into games rather than graphics. MAG was like a fps gta, gta in the size aspect of the map, bfbc2+ was big but limited by time on the rush game type so you couldn't go everywhere you could see, MAG was so big you wouldn't even wanna waste time running or walking to the edge of any domination map.

Watching this in 2017. Still have not found any substidude close to what MAG was and fell the sadness inside. Tried Planetside 2, Dust 514, it's just not it. Would have bought a PS4 for MAG2 deffinetly. [IAA]

MAG was my first ps3 game in December of 2011 when I bought a ps3 slim on my Bday. I will miss MAG. I recorded alot of Dom footage so in the future I'll upload it. Now I decided to move to Dust 514 in where some of MAGs big clans have moved to. Add me JIMvc2. R.I.P MAG.
Its sad to see MAG go, because in my opinion, nothing else compares. I tried playing Dust 514 man, but I just can't get into it, maybe a clan would help, I'll add you but I'm more looking forward to the PS4 release of Planetside 2. Also, I too recorded a lot of Dom footage (which I may upload in the future).
I'm getting the PS4 next year for Starwars battlefront. Dust 514 is so similar to MAG that the learning curve takes weeks if not months. 1.8 uprising is coming soon :)

I am not sure if there will ever be a MAG 2. Zipper Interactive closed down a while ago and the rights for the game probably when back to Sony. So unless Sony hands over the rights to another developer, then yea a MAG 2 ain't gonna happen. It was an interesting game nonetheless. Too bad it only lived for 4 years. A pretty short time to be honest.
That's what I was thinking, Sony might, and I mean might, be willing to give the rights to a non in-house developer to make a MAG 2. There was talk slant six was gonna take on the project once Zipper was shut down but slant six was shut down only a year later so I doubt anything was in the works.

I hate life :( I downloaded the demo when i was 12 year old and im now 16. I loved the game. I was 13 when i buyed the game for 15 € on sale. I am so sad now. *Goes cry*

I miss MAG!!! I spent 100's of hours made a lot of friends that I still game with had so much fun!!! domination was my favorite as well.....I do hope the make a MAG 2

But I LIVED for this game back in 2010 & 2011. ❤ I fell out of gaming for a while and when i came back it was gone. 😢😢😢
I allways loved this game much more than any other fps.
The teamplay mechanics was insane. It really gave people a Great bonus for cooperating.
The feeling of being a squad Leader or a platoon commander with People following orders to complete fragos was unreal.
In my mind the only game that gives me this today is Squad on pc. But being on my ps3 with my headset on. Leading my teammates. It was Great.
And i rarely saw bad attitude in this game.

This game defined my childhood. I was a member of SVER and I respect every single enemies that has fought against me because they had made my childhood great.
I’m glad I got to experience a great game like this. All of you who played MAG, I want to thank you. You all were freaking awesome.
