- Chris Hedges spoke at Friday's Interfaith Lecture in the Hall of Philosophy. He was the last to speak on the week's theme, "Markets and Morals." His lecture traced the demise of liberal values in America since World War I and emphasized the importance of social movements in maintaining democracy.

9 years later, and he's proven absolutely right.
Chris Hedges.
He speaks.
I listen.
I realize how ignorant I am.
I keep listening.
He keeps opening up the world to me.
Keep going Chris.
Me too
Nailed it
This is the kind of 'preaching' we need in Americas pulpits.
Whenever I listen to Chris Hedges I always cry. His vast knowledge combined with his great kindness to those suffering souls around the world puts a lump in my throat every time. So grateful I found this brilliant and sensitive man. His soul is rich with empathy for the underdogs of the world.
So is yours. He speaks because he wants us to wake up to that, and then LIVE BY IT.
Brilliant talk and many great references. Hedge's talks are so packed full of great relevant material usually have to listen several times.
I know this is years old...but it is still relevant. Thank you Chris...there are few speakers in the world right now who touch my soul the way you do.
Which is sad since you'd hope we'd made more progress in the last 90 years

Oh so relevant post Capital Riot.
@@steppenwolf3252 nice name
But he's not doing it to touch your soul...
This intelligent, eloquent, wise and ballsy man takes my breath away (I mean I literally stop breathing at times). To hear him is both scary and inspiring! Thank you, Chris Hedges.
Oh, yes this man has tremendous courage, don't under-estimate it!
I am immersed in listening to all of Chris' talks this winter and am also reading his books. This talk in particular is electrifying... he is speaking straight from the heart. Chris Hedges is a national treasure.
Correction: INTERnational treasure!
reinier ambrosius Noted! LOL!
Yes, but nobody listens to him unfortunately. Same with Bill McKibben and James Hansen.
jeffreydebra1 I think a lot of people are listening to Chris... and Bill and Jim. I've met Bill McKibben once and James Hansen twice at very well-attended events in Boston and New Hampshire. I would like very much to meet Chris Hedges at some point. I would venture to say that most of the people who are following these three are quietly working in their own lives to learn as much as possible in order to prepare for the future. We have a lot to do... :-)
+jeffreydebra1 Part of the problem is Mr Hedges and others (Noam Chomsky, Richard Wolff, etc.) have been "de platformed" . i.e. with corporate dollars flooding into universities and democratic institutions globally, its harder and harder for people like him to reach a larger audience in person as they are simply not allowed the opportunity to say what we all know in our hearts.
Democracy is dead. The dream of social progress is dead. There is no recovery.
Hedges is one of the best speakers and writers of this age. His command of the written and spoken word is nearly unmatched.
I’ve learned so much from Chris as his knowledge and vision is unequaled in America. Many thanks Chris for sharing with and educating people about so many fields of study
Maybe his most powerful and prescient speech. He nails it on so many levels. What more can be added? Nothing, IMO.
Thank you and God bless you Chris.
Everything Hedges says is interesting. Would recommend listening to another great US Cultural Commentor, the late great Gore Vidal ( also on RUclips) who was talking about these topics for many years.
Powerful messages here. Chris never give up your fight what is right.
As Chris speaks i pause and take notes.
This is someone I am proud to call my countryman.
If you haven't watched it yet, check out his talk on 'War gives us meaning'.
Isn't that what most of us wan't? To respect each other beliefs even though we don't need to agree with them. That is how peace is made.
And it's the ideal of USA Democracy (or so we were told)...But we lost that after the 1930's as Chris illustrates here
yeah. Respect peoples beliefs even if they are wrong and too stupid to believe in Jesus and the only true God
As, usual, brilliant! I learn so much
All my 4 years at university are worthless compared to the education I'm now getting from Chris Hedges.
AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I graduated from a state university in December of '84, into Reagan's American. And I could already tell things were being ramped up on the Cristian right, the increased militarization of the country, and Reagan's " gospel of wealth" and "greed is good" message were in full steam. None of this was talked about in my entire education. I didn't have the language to articulate what Chris is saying.
Honor grave sins? Can be good, but still there is a limit
Don't sweat it. Many people first start out with Alex Jones (I did, and I wasn't on meth...) and later "graduate" to more sober and interesting sources.
Same here. Listened to the man in 2007, before Barack Obama was elected. When Obama won, Alex fell off the deep end. I just couldn’t listen to him scream anymore! Lol
@@jamienix5399 this is heartening. my brother was the same. I think young men are truly seeking leadership and guidance but are getting lost in the noise.
thats a great way to put it
Chris Hedges is all about non violence.
And freedom of speech, rational discourse, and learning to think for ourselves
I listened to this 4 years ago and it made me angry. I listened to it again today and now I understand.
"We have to make those in power scared to death"
How?
by protests I guess
Assemble the masses
@WTFViewer though in this case, the mob was allowed to do that (either by ignorance or deliberate invitation). Notice the upgrades wh police and other agencies got afterwards, even though the personnel, equipment and strategy were already more than enough to handle it.
Hedges has said: By mass demonstrations, and strikes by all unions, all together!
Right on...
Hedges starts talking at 3:15
Did you know that the US Constitution is the shortest Constitution in the world?.
Wonderful I really thank u all most inspiring truth I ever heard peoples don't even know don't r care what going on but I really do an i no, Jesus, is soon 2 come🙏🙏🙏😇🙏🙏😇
amen
We don't have a soviet style education because if we had one it will improved our math and science. But we have an education system base on free-market capitalist principles and currently we seeing its awful affects. Coming generation will live in extreme poverty. Capitalism is a big failure.
I wouldn't even call ours an "education system"...Our education seemed to take a nose dive after Reagan when the first big Corporation tax cuts were given to the Billionaires. We were told those cuts would "create jobs" but all we got was trickled down on and no more jobs. Wages have been stagnant since 1970's around Reagans election. I watched USA descend into hell in increments and no one noticed. Now we're in hell.
1:06:50 Look around. Obviously it wasn't enough.
Get judges that aren't employed by the powerful war machine or corrupt corporations.
What a nice background.
Kompliments!
Ya what he/she said!!!
Until they come for you.
You may want to check out - - deliberate dumbing down of america - -

From a secular perspective - sure, marriage can between anybody and any thing.
But don’t bring Christianity in this and the word of god, the message was clear.

Mr
Why not try to refute his arguments in this venue?
Because he's right and there's nothing to refute

Chris Hedges is so right - I love his mind. I wish he'd consider going for president - however, he might be assassinated then - bringing truth to and out of Washington is forbidden.
@@icepooky8091 so true. Im so grateful for his shining example
@@icepooky8091 were you listening when he spoke about when people are in power (mediocre or venal at best)?

Chris is th
"A material diminishing of our situation does not mean a spiritual diminishing of our situation." LOL he thought there was a spiritual aspect of the occupy movement? I guess he wasn't paying attention to what that so called movement was about. But seeing as he's a white, straight, American, male, he was so far at the back of the line he'd be dead before he got his turn to speak to that crowd. He called them "thoughtful." Yeah, they were thoughtful all right. What they were thinking about was themselves and nothing else.
I believe the point.
There will be wheels of Cheese EVERYWHERE!!!
Bad start, Mr. Hedges! What a shame.
Why do you say that?
@@mE-zx7pt Yea, C...I agree with Pat. What the heck are you saying C? but I guess it's probably no biggie
