  • In this video, I will show you how I transform a Shin Deshojo Japanese Maple nursery stock I purchased at a local nursery into a bonsai. The main should is to create the right structure and select the right branches for further development. Enjoy!

Hello there. Congratulations for the video, it's really nice.
I'm trying to grow japanese maple from seeds in Brasil. So far I was able to germinate seeds of the Sango Kaku variety.
I'm having a hard time with the seedlings, for some reason the bud are geting "burn". I don't kow if it's some fungus problem or the substrate that is getting compact and wet. I imagine that you have alot more expirience than me, have you seeing something like that before ?

Thanks! It could be due to various reasons but it may be that the soil is too wet and there's not enough oxygen in there. I would suggest you monitor the moisture level in the soil and use a bit more of pumice/bark to increase drainage when you repot. Hope this helps!

How or where did you learn to bonsai. How long have you been gardening? Nice work and you make it seem so easy.

I learned how to bonsai from different sources like local bonsai nursery, bonsai club, books, videos etc. Lots of practical knowledge came from my experience doing and experimenting stiff over 10+ years. :)

I noticed all my deshojos this year didn't do well, lots of damaged leaves for some reason. did yours experience the same this year? I'm from the west coast, vacouver bc.

Yes some unhealthy Shin deshojos had their leaves damaged from early summer and never recovered...I will repot them next year and let them grow freely to make them happy :)

Hi Team Momiji-En Bonsai, great video with clear explanation!
I have a favour to ask, I am trying to find a Shin Deshojo nursery stock but haven’t been able to find one yet. Could you please point me in the direction where I might find them or share the contact details of the nursery you got it from. Will really appreciate the same!
