Replacing a Rotten Tile Floor Caused By Leaky Toilet - Part 1

- This rotten tile floor has to be replaced. We installed new laminate floors for this homeowner a couple years ago. At that time we told the homeowner that the stool was leaking really bad and needed to be fixed. He agreed but didn’t have the means at that time.
When we installed the laminate the tile around the stool was just cracked and a little loose. As you can see in the video the floor has gotten much worse. Now the stool is actually sinking and the floor around it is really soft.
The first thing we are going to do is remove the toilet, door and base trim. Once those things are out of the way we are going to hang plastic over the vanity to keep the dust off of it.
After all the job prep is done we will remove the tile and underlayment. We will also remove the subfloor and get down to the floor joists. We also want to look at the toilet drain and figure out what’s causing it to leak. Usually it’s a poorly installed wax ring and sometimes it’s more than that.
In the case of this job the stool flange was improperly installed and that was the cause of the leak. In order to fix the problem we cut out a section of pipe and replaced it with PVC.
We are a bathroom remodeler servicing the Columbia Missouri area. If you are needing your bathroom updated give us a call, we would love to interview for your project. Our tile installations include a lifetime manufacturer warranty.

Thank you for taking the time to post this video. When I have to pull toilets I use a 18v Milwaukee shop vac to suck out the water from the bowl and tank. It's an extra step but it makes the toilet a lot easier to carry
Thank you for the suggestion, I appreciate it.
Great video.....right to the points.,..no love for the empty toilet paper roll
Thank you for watching
I loved seeing the mans back the whole time he was cutting out the drain.
I’m happy you’re happy
@@friendlyneighborhoodtileguy lol as long as were all happy.
Perfect vid for my sitchy minus the bad drain.
I’m glad I could help. Thank you for watching.
Appreciate the video, but I can’t be the only one cringing at ! 😳 😊
It’s a dirty job sometimes. It’s probably got something to do with us having immunity to COVID. Thanks for watching and commenting, I appreciate it.
It made me cringe, too. I wonder how many times they touched the homeowner's door knobs and other surfaces on their way in and out of the house. Great way to spread pathogens, though.
@@desireerufer1114 what doesn't kill you makes you stronger... except electricity, that will definitely kill you.
Lol... the more you work with it, the more your immunities build up to it. Im not saying that you should put your face right in it or work with open wounds, but studies have shown that THE OPPOSITE actually gets you more infections(using antibacterial soap, washing hands excessively, using alcohol wipes too frequently, etc...). You end up killing GOOD bacteria on your skin in the process. First time I worked as a lot porter and had to clean under trash cans, I became so sick! As I worked at the same job longer, for 7 years roughly, I haven't been sick since then! Also ive gotten covid several times. First time was HORRIBLE! Second time was so so, third time? Like a regular cold/ flu. Never vaccinated(thank God) only using natural antibodies! Ppl just scare themselves crazy it seems lol
@@desireerufer1114uhmm pathogens? IN A HOUSE WITH SEVERELY ROTTED AND MOLDY FLOORING ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? LOL they're already there! The spores are microscopic and airborne! Whoever was living in that house had come into contact with "pathogens" many times prior to these two fixing things lol
Great video thanks my man
+Mookey The Pimp Thompson Thank you
Oh my! No gloves while handling that urine and 💩 floor then touching face and phone… I admire your strength in carrying out that water filled toilet, tho 😀
It’s best to not think about it
How do you know if the drain is the issue and not the wax seal around the toilet?
It’s nearly always the wax seal. Cast iron drains get cut out and replaced when they’re rusted out.
Sponge and a bucket saves on spilling the water out of the trap and makes the toilet lighter to carry!
+Thomas Leib I’ve used a shop vac before but never tried the sponge and bucket. That’s a good idea.
Put it inside a contractor size garbage bag and tie it up so it won’t spill. Then you carry it out of the way. You’re welcome 😉
@@friendlyneighborhoodtileguy I still prefer the Shop Vac method myself. Just so much easier in the end.
Why not pull that vanity? The wood under it _had_ to be rotten, right?
Not necessarily. The vanity is also supported by being anchored to the wall as well. Everyone’s budget runs out someplace, we did all we could without tearing the whole bathroom apart.
I’ve been doing this with a friends 1970s trailer! 🤬
Hopefully you’re having good luck.
thanks hope i dont get itchy ass sydrome too lmao
👍
EJ flooring.& custom tile installation, My bathroom looks about the same exact size with vanity as well, About how much would a job of that size normally cost, with material & labor??
Thanks for the question. It would be pretty hard to give a definitive price based off this particular project. For a standard bathroom that requires no structural repair we charge about $1,500-$2,000 to remove and replace the flooring. This would be a for tile installation, as that’s what we do. This particular job was a little over $2,500 because the subfloor and drain needed to be repaired. If you’d like me to set up a time to look at your project, I’d be happy to. Feel free to give me a call or text (573) 289-1045. Thanks, Eric Blumer.
Why do you not use knee pads?? Great video would have appreciated some better angles of the plumbing work…cheers!
Knee pads cut the circulation off around my legs when I’m bent over, I’ve just never worn them. I used to use a kneeling pad but I got tired of moving it around. I’m trying to figure out the process of filming better. I do want to produce as high quality videos as I can.
@@friendlyneighborhoodtileguy nice I use the kneeling pad but your right it’s cumbersome to move.
That’s professional coverup
Ok
No gloves 🤮🤮 touching someone's toilet
Washing your hands is a thing. It’s actually better than gloves because gloves give a false sense of security.
@@friendlyneighborhoodtileguy Gloves "absorb" stuff. Just say'n
My route leak we saw what happens the flange
Ok
@@friendlyneighborhoodtileguy Did you understand that comment? I didn't. Just a bunch of words strung together.
@@ApartmentKing66 I didn’t understand
This guy doesn't need any tools to take a water supply off.. DO NOT UPSET HIM
It’s better to take out frustrations on water supplies than people.
Why PVC and not ABS?
PVC is more readily available and a stronger pipe. ABS is no longer allowed by code here. You can only get a few fittings, pretty much repair only. Great question, thanks.
@@friendlyneighborhoodtileguy I only ask because I happened to go to a plumbing supply store today and asked the same question, he said pvc is brittle.
PVC is brittle compared to ABS, but PVC is much stronger. ABS is easily deformed and very soft. It’s also more caustic and has secondary issues with people that work with it regularly I believe.
About how much is this procedure in a 1940s bathroom
It will really depend on several factors. 1940’s tile is installed differently and can be difficult to remove.
This is happening to me right now I'm alone those will not fix it I'm afraid my toilets going to just cave right in. I hear water dripping all the time
Hopefully you can get it repaired soon
Around the vanity ?
The vanity is attached to the walls, the floor around the vanity is just fine.
Hope you charge by the hour cause dang you work fast. Learned. 0
I charge by the job
@@friendlyneighborhoodtileguy That's good for people on a budget. Charging by the job so that they know how much the job's gonna cost before any work gets started. Eliminates the "oh sh** I don't have that much" syndrome.
How long would you let a leaking toilet go?
1 second
As long as it takes to get back from Home Depot. After turn off valve.
+Scott G That’s what I’m talking about.
+KCconcealed Yes! I agree
@elkstereidolon3523my landlord is a construction person and you don't help me make fix my toilet my toilet is in worse shape than this one I feel like I'm just going to cave into the ground I hear water leaking all the time and nothing is ever done to help me but he likes to yell at me all the time and I'm afraid that he's going to blame me for this
@ 18:08 ... thank me later
What am I looking for?
@@friendlyneighborhoodtileguy The guy on the floor with his back to the camera pulls his pants up slightly and is seen...uh...scratching his...uh...anal orifice through his jeans...hope that's diplomatic enough. Doubtless forgot he was on camera when he decided to take care of that li'l itch.
@@friendlyneighborhoodtileguy I answered your question, but it got deleted.
You can tell when he turn the shut-off valve that it was loose. First sign of the previous crew having cut corners or maybe just not knowing how to do the job correctly. Still, there's no excuse for "crappy' work!
Lots of hacks out there
