    Great job, I know they sell a kit for raising your drain for $6 or $7, but it’s so exact and your drain opening must be exactly 3 3/8” center to center for the screws to align. Your way of cutting PVC outside the screw holes is much simpler and the idea of cutting the new PVC drain is brilliant. 😊 Thank You.

    hi a very informative video.
    When finishing off the corners with silicone, I would suggest first tooling off the silicone with your finger first, then spraying it with water, followed by a spray of soapy water and then another tooling off with your fingers.
    If you spray the silicone before tooling it off, you prevent the silicone sticking to the tiles on the feather edges of the bead and mould will establish in these areas.
    cheers

    This is an excellent video, possibly the best on this subject (I haven't watched them all...) and I send the link to everybody who asks me about tiling over tile in the shower. Even homeowners who won't do the work need to know how to do it to demand the best result from the installers they hire.
    This was a superb job in all details, which unfortunately required many work interruptions and return trips that most professional installers would try to avoid by cutting corners to make more money. The results of this job depend largely on the detailed work that only a knowledgeable and careful installer can deliver **IF** they are paid enough for the time invested.

    Fantastic video. Your instructions were clear and detailed. I appreciate the effort. I am going to pull out the walls in my shower but tile over my floor since it doesn't leak. Surprisingly I picked out the same exact tile from Lowes. Can you tell me what color grout you used. It looks perfect with the natural stone. Also, is it over kill to paint on a membrane like Redguard and if I did go that route would you suggest to put the primer over the Redguard? Thanks

    • @renovationschool8818
      @renovationschool8818  Год назад +2

      Thanks for watching 🙂 I don't remember the grout colour but I'm sure I showed it in the video you may be able to see what brand and colour it was if you watch the video one more time. just use any sanded grout that matches the colour of the tiles ( stay away from premixed grout they suck so much)
      As far as applying redguard on the old tiles it depends, if your tile has a rough texture it should work, but if the floor tiles are shiny and big redguard will not stick as well as this primer. this primer adheres very well to tiles even if they're shiny. if the shower floor doesn't leak I suggest using the primer overall. If you want to use the redguard id say to apply this primer first and then apply the redguard on top if you want to. The primer is used for bonding the materials.
      All the best 👍

      I've been doing a lot of research. I have the same drain as yours. Do I have to worry about weep holes not being in the drain? I have a sloped shower floor that drains to the middle but not sure if they used a motor bed? My plan was to sand, apply the tile primer, then a coat of Red Gard, and then install Kerdi membrane and a Kerdi curb to make sure the floor doesn't leak. I do have a small leak on the outside of the present curb which is probably wood and not sealed properly. Any thoughts?

    I’m not complaining about your work. Just wanted to ask….
    Ok… all tile leaks through the grout. That’s why the shower pan is super critical. So when you tile over tile. You need to make sure the moisture that gets below the tile can flow to the drain and then allow the grout to dry out. Otherwise the grout will stay wet all the time causing mold. Did you make sure to add new weep holes at the new drain.
    I build custom homes and remodel homes. The number one issue I find is wet shower pains, moldy grout and tile due to poor shower pan drainage.
    So. Now when water makes its way through your new grout. It hits the new water barrier. It will run towards the low spots which should be your drain. However when it hits the new piece of black pipe installed it cannot get into the drain, there are no weep holes. So the grout will become saturated with water and never fully denoting used regularly.

    • @renovationschool8818
      @renovationschool8818  6 месяцев назад

      I've seen many shower pan failiars also.
      I say most of the cases depend on the home owners. If the clean and seal the tiles regularly they will never have an issue.
      I clean and maintain mine.
      It really is amazing to goof proof it. But honestly I didn't bother making weeping holes and bs . It's too much overthinking here for a small tile shower floor that has all the fancy waterproofing stuff under it . When I use this shower every day. I always notice that my grout dosent even get wet let alon having mold in it. If u watch the video again you will see I used that grout additive . It literally made it water repellent 100 percent. You can see the water from in to small balls when it hits the grout here. I do not ever worry about weeping holes or water getting in or under this grout.
      All the best . Thanks for watching and the comments. I really appreciate you and people like you.

      Thanks for watching
      Professionals always do the walls first. Be aware if u do the floors first establishing the first row on the bottom of the walls will be difficult for DIY guys because u need to get perfect grout lines. Since shower floors are sloped you need to cut the bottom of every wall tile according to the slope ( only the bottom row will be hard to do) but let's say if you are not very skilled with tile work you can do the walls first and hide the bottom row cut imperfections with the floor tiles.

      if u dont have any water and leaking issues , I would suggest washing the tiles super clean first and then when its bone dry, clean it with alcohol. Then apply the primmer that i used in the video. when primmer is dried up use modiffied thin set (that i showed in the video) and skim coat over the rock tiles till its smooth, making sure its slopped properly so when u tile over it the water goes to the drain. allow to dry up for a full day and then tile over it the same way i explained.
      basically build a layer of modified thinset on top of the rock tiles after the primmer is dried up and make sure its slopped properly before tilling over it.

    At the end you can see pocket between pebble this is better to use epoxy grout in my opinion because once the sealer will fade then the grout can change color (stain) and if too much humidity then mold could appear.

    before you place grout place sealer over face of tile ,easier to clean grout off surface

    • @renovationschool8818

      good idea
      I wanted the maximum bond between the tile and grout thats why i applied the sealler after.
      thanks for the comment.🙏

    so did you wait in between the thin-set and grout? Did you allow the thin-set to fully dry first or just added the grout once you completed the thin-set application? Thank you

    • @renovationschool8818
      @renovationschool8818  2 месяца назад

      I did the tile the first day and grout the next day. You need to allow the thin set to dry up completely

    I know this is a year old video but I figure I'll try. I have the same issue and want to tile over top. Only problem is the drain is a linear type that can't be adjusted up or down. Its a Schluter system so the drain has a flange that is under the schluter. Any ideas how to extend some kind of drain?

    • @renovationschool8818
      @renovationschool8818  Год назад

      You won't be able to unfortunately. I know what exact type of drain you have . This will not work in your case. You have to redo the whole shower base.

    i am thinking about retiling on top of existing tile due to uneven low spot area of the shower pan and is pooling water. Other than the process you mentioned on your video, before actual retiling, what would be the recommended process to ensure on top tile will have correct slope down to drain?

    • @renovationschool8818
      @renovationschool8818  11 месяцев назад

      You can mix some thinset and fix the slope first and then tile over that when it's dry

      Hi
      Thanks for watching
      Grout is all optional. You can use whatever color you like. Just go to home depot or Lowe's and there you can see the grout color on their packages. You can buy the color you desire.

    • @hwangysj
      @hwangysj 4 месяца назад

      yes got it....was hoping to use the color you used...it looks grey in the video but I remember you used white for the thinset, so just trying to replicate what you did...thank you@@renovationschool8818

    How come the Tile grout is not filled properly to the extent of the surface level? It is evident from the shadows. It will lead to stagnation of water and shower is wet 24/7 though the mold may not form if the material used is mold resistant.
