  • Kiko Loureiro on why he quit Megadeth permanently - new interview posted on line
there is a new interview on line with guitarist Kiko Loureiro as he had a chat with Guitar World magazine about his departure from Megadeth full interview here www.guitarworld.com/features/...
Kiko Loureiro was asked what led to his decision to leave MEGADETH at the end of 2023 after 9 years. He stated: "It started when I booked a trip home to Brazil. The last time I'd been was in 2019, before the pandemic; I got to a point where I said, 'I need to visit my family,' so I booked a trip for the Thanksgiving period in 2023 because MEGADETH never does anything around that time.
"When you're young, not married and have no kids, the mindset is, 'The more concerts, the better.' But my daughter is 12 now, and I want to spend time with her. I also want to be out there playing. When the MEGADETH thing happened for me in 2015, I had a young daughter and twins who were newborns. I was always struggling with knowing I needed to be touring, but also wanted to be home with my kids and my wife. So the feeling of, 'Should I be out doing this rock star thing while my kids are at home?' kept coming up. And the more moments and important dates I missed, the harder it was. It got harder in 2023, especially during the three-month summer tour. So I went to Dave [Mustaine, MEGADETH leader] in June, saying, 'This is too much. I'm not feeling like I'm in the right place or mood to give 100 percent.' It was complicated for me to say because I wanted to play, but I knew I needed to be at home. And, of course, Dave was not expecting it. We had just done a show in Florida with the MISFITS, and it was right after that show that I talked to Dave. And then MEGADETH management was there, and I let them know I could not do the September gigs. I offered to help find a replacement and do what was needed to help MEGADETH be ready to go."
Regarding what led to a permanent departure rather than just a temporary ... Kiko stated: "My proposal was not to do the September shows and help them find a replacement, which turned out to be Teemu [Mäntysaari]. But then I had some situations with my kids and had to go to the doctor, and I felt like I wanted to be home. "And I get it - MEGADETH must go on, right? Being able to pick and choose where and when I play is not going to be a thing. I mean, I guess it could be, but that's not the way it turned out. Maybe they felt like, 'Well, Kiko might come out on the next tour and say the same thing,' which I understand. So I told them, 'I understand if you guys feel that I'm unreliable,' They kept asking me, 'Are you sure?' Ultimately, I had to take control because I knew I needed and wanted to be home. People who don't have kids won't understand, while if you do, you will."

I KNEW this was the reason. I saw a video of him several years ago, and his daughter was in the video. You can tell he adores his children and wants to be a good father. One of the best ways to be a good father is to simply be there for them. As a father of three, I 100% understand his decision.

Big respect for Kiko. Leaving your dream job to spend time with your family would be a very difficult decision, but I believe, at the end of the day, he'll be able to look at himself in the mirror and say, "Yep, I did the right thing."

I’m old enough and lucky enough to have seen Megadeth live with every line up they have had , after the rust in peace members left and they started going through member after member I thought Kiko was the best fit of all the guitarists that had come through after Marty left , I was hoping he would stay with Megadeth until Dave called it quits . Can’t blame him for wanting to be his kids as they grow up it’s a special time in their life’s and both parents should be there to witness them growing up .

It's amazing how many people automatically have nothing but negative to say about Mustain. Except none of these people have ever even met Dave. They just go on whatever the internet tells them to believe. So what if he's hard to deal with and rules the band with an iron fist. It's his damn band and he can do whatever he wants.
It sure is funny that Kiko isn't saying any of this negative stuff. He and Dave have both been very supportive of each other. Everything I have seen, heard and read about this split has been presented in a positive light.

I had many opportunities to advance my career but in order to that, I would have to be away from my daughter majority of the time. You can never go back and make’ up time missed with your kids. I completely understand and respect Kiko's decision and wish him nothing but the best in whatever he decides. He's a killer player, but you also have to be attentive to your family's needs. Teemu seems like a good fit during the tour from what I've heard and what little I've seen online. Maybe he will stay on for the next record, maybe not but I'm sure Dave and the rest of the band is at least relieved to know where Kiko stands now so they can move on to whatever they decide to do. Dave always did have a way of finding great players to team up with over the years and if it turns out that Teemu doesn't stay on, I'm sure he will be able to find someone who is a good fit.
I hear Jeff Loomis is missing a band now haha. Nah, Loomis is looking for more musical freedom I think, will do some solo work.

Kiko on the other hand always felt as a hired gun and his technical virtuosity and musical knowledge could be used in the fusion genre, just like Chris Poland did; and many other phenomenal guitarists that where holding back their musical creativity for the sake of the band that where into. So, i think he made the right choice to move on. IMHO I would love to see him as a solo artist and make an album with his native musical style.

Marry could indeed bring back that old wedding band esteem that Megadeth had in the early days.

Good for him i stopped playing Daves music after Marty left so maybe Martys Back ? When i seen a video of Marty kissing Daves butt i figured somebody is about to quit the Mustaine Train to many guitarist in the room. Careful what you wish for Marty wouldnt want to start looking like Dave The years have not been kind.
