TheCRTman good day. Back in my home town back in the day they had 4 Orion busses in service. The slapper door up front. Same dash and all.. had the 6v53na and the auto as well. Things were loud.. smelly and would rattle the teeth from your head. They would only use them on the shortest of routes. They weren't geared for the highway. But .. loved it
I worked on that bus when it was an airport shuttle. Was bought used, I knew it as PMCL (penetang midland coach lines) now defunct, absorbed into the greyhound umbrella.
good old Detroit power I love that sound ,,, I have a 12V71 in my 1974 C6500 RV hauler ,, what a magical sound listening to it rev that one sounds like a 6V53 ,,,I also have a 6V-71TA out of a firetruck i am looking for a truck to use it in ,, and a have a chevy pickup with a 6V53 conversion
Those Orion I's bring back memiors here in Ottawa. OC had a ton of them. Most where 30 footers although we had 1 35 footer 8816. IU don't recall ever seeing that Orion I being used at the airport here in Ottawa?
I heard you pronounce "Orion" the same way as we've heard on the Star Trek (animated series) 2nd season premiere episode: "The Pirates of Orion." The correct pronunciation is oh-RY-un (rhymes with "Brian").
retroolschool You're welcome. I originally discovered the pronunciation issue when this video was shared on a Facebook group and someone else commented about it. Orion only sold a few buses to Quebec, including to Quebec City in 1979 and to Drummondville in 1987.
Brent Foster I was thinking that myself, but the number is too high for that model. The last bus with mechanical shifter was 906/907. The 908 had the electronic shifter. I remember riding on it when it was brand new.
Elton. Just from the candy ass color of that 6V53, a color that CT decided to use on it's rebuilds, I am thinking that Orion had it's first taste of the road in Calgary. CT sold all their Orions, all over the country. I am pretty sure that if the history is checked on that unit, it came from CT. Rare find my friend. Neither the bus nor the engine are worth crap. That Allison is a 644, which is a second gear start. Take care my friend
The 285 Foothill Transit lines from La Habra to Puente Hills malls Mon-Sat. uses Orion Buses-not the old era Fishbowls or Old looks to be sure, built around early 2000s BUT with HIGH FLOORS! QUITE the contrast to many OTHER Southern Calif. buses (and if you look around you'll see some in Southern Calif.diriving New/Old looks. Of course these late 1990s-early 200s Orions csan't compete but they don't have these lame ass low floors anywho!
HOLY SHIT a 1980 with a 6V53N/Allison MT-643??!?!?!? These are hella rare!!!! I seriously hope someone can buy it!! It runs okay too.

Its amazing to think how many miles are probably on that engine,Yet it still starts and runs sweet.
it was probably maintained well being at an air port.
We had one here in stpetersburg Florida but not the same series
I think the ones we had was may be a 1987 they sounded like a eagle engine
maybe not the same Year or model
We had some in Florida

I rode in a bus like this one a few times when I was at the Fortress of Louisbourg.
1980's buses still run in my country. The older ones are sooo comfy compared to the new ones.
Was one of about 6 Orion 1s, and 4 eldorado escort re-as that were in the pmcl fleet for that service.
Great engine, fast start.

OC Transpo had a bunch of 30 footers back in the early 80s.

A Transit bus? No. A motor coach? Yes.

Cut my apprentice teeth on those things...been a coach technician for the TTC for going on 13 years now....I miss the old buses.
6:40 Looks like the bus is surprized !.
5:08 IT'S ALIIIVVEEE! :D
Too bad this Orion is likely gone.....originally with Pickering Transit as 909, and 825 was for Greater Toronto Airports Authority.
Was numbered the same at pmcl, may have been ex Pickering. The bi lingual signage was for the airport. (Pearson)

+Melvin Schmecklebak Thanks for the info Doug, had a feeling it was a 6v53.
+Melvin Schmecklebak
Calgary never ran any 30-foot Orions; theirs were 35 feet.
