I did this in January to my iPhone X. Within the first month, I got a hairline crack on the camera due to stresses when it was made. I also completely shattered the back as the phone was in my pocket and I hit the corner of a table. The glass is soooo weak that you can break it with your finger nail. So anyone planning on doing this, don’t. The quality all round is low. Also I am replacing the glass with wood, as it is more custom. I might post a video of it in the future. Have a good day
I found what looks like a nice protection case for my phone, but they only showed renders, so here's hoping it looks somewhat decent in real life. And yes I've gone off trying to change the phone's housing as it seems like too much work for reducing build quality and function
@@nitroneal4998 The "pet peeves" kept building up as he put that housing together lol the buttons needed fixing, the cable doesn't fit, no hole for mic - crappier audio, then the screen just looks tacked on like a $20 LCD replacement I'll just do it with an external case instead XD

Ah the nostalgia. I had a xs max for a long time and I used to open it up lot to try and fix the face id. Those were good times lol. That phone taught me a lot about fixing newer iphones as all I knew how to fix where older ones.
I’m still using a Xs Max and after seeing this video, doesn’t seem like the trade off of looks for functionality are worth it. I think the design of it is pretty classic myself and the quality of the cameras have really held up.

fun fact: in North Huaqiang ,Shenzhen, China, there are lots of manufacturers who customize 2nd handed iPhone XRs into iphone 11s, 12s, and even 13s. they sell them online for about 1500 yuan(about 225 usd). some people even send their XRs there and get the phone converted there, as XR, 11, 12 and 13 all are the same size. many students with low budget want to have something iOS so they buy the customized iPhones. and hence, a Chinese internet meme appeared, which is saying that everything tech related is customized from an XR, from phones, tablets and i even have seen a comment below a motorbike video saying it is customized from an iPhone XR
@@LOCKBlT at the time this comment was published 8 months ago, the price was 1500 yuan for an xr into 11 12 or 13. now with the same price you can buy the iphone 11 modified into 12 or 13, which of course makes the modded xr way cheaper. these phones are usually cheaper without face id as they removed the expensive parts and replaced them with cheaper ones. they are usually sold on tiktok online shops and they are shipped from basically the same place, but more people just prefer to buy a 2nd hand xr or 11 (unmodified) and a modding kit which changes the shape into the 12 or 13. and i saw a skit that says 10 years later, you can still customise the xr into the latest iphones

Watching from my real 12 Pro Max, really cool mod, shame about the drawbacks, as it would be perfect without the little problems, as usual you have the patience of a saint and completed a successful repair and conversion whilst making it look easy.
Absolutely true, and I will add that the wifi power will considerably drop. I did X->12 pro, but 12 pro cases won't fit the modified one. It's more the size of 11pro, which is smaller. The new flashlight, even when it is happy and decides to turn on, will not really enlighten photos in the dark. I thought no one would buy it, and ended up selling it more than a year ago to someone I know, explaining the issues, and they are still happy with it to now :). I still have some of these, but am planning to do it anytime soon.
I hate when little things like that happen because like yourself, I am a perfectionist when it comes to going iPhone repairs. I wouldn't have even closed permanently until I tested and made sure it worked 100%. Aside from that, awesome vid as usual.
Great job with the transfer! However, I feel the Xs max design is so much better than the squared off design. The square design might look cool but the sharp edges are uncomfortable to your hand after holding it for a while. Try holding a 12 max for a while then a Xs max and it is like night and day more comfortable!

I did the same conversion on a xr the only suggestion i have for you is to use some T7000 adhesive around the speaker and charging port to help retain waterproof functionality otherwise great job
For the Face ID trust me when I say it alway use heat gun on the glass side of the screen for 4-6 seconds which makes the removal of that cable much easier and you don’t have to worry about breaking it or not working for some reason 👌
This types of practice of putting the internals of an older model to a housing resembling a newer model is a reason why I probably will throw the towel on supporting right-to-repair.

Also, the rear mic is also used for noise suppression during voice calls (from earpiece and not with speakerphone), so the noise suppression capabilities will also be limited.
Hello @HughJeffreys I wanted to address the flex cabling you mentioned that go from the wireless charging pad to the buttons: those cables are meant to be ground cables to ground the charging pad to the assembly housing. This type of grounding is quite common in electronics and even things like spacecraft.

It's way time America and Europe cracked down on Apple who make it so dificult to replace broken parts in the phones. The fact they don't crack down on them makes you wonder who's side they are on!
That sensor cable connected to the chassis of the phone is probably the capacitive touch sensor for the back of the phone. Its used for some shortcut features I think.
Definitely very weird adjusting the flash and microphone. A cool mod but not really practical.

The word you are looking for is third party. The replacement parts are not stock from Apple but technically a knockoff in a way.
Now make a sleeper build. Use an IPhone 10 housing, iPhone 10 camera module with a broken iPhone 12
