The Jewish Cemetery in Kolkata's Narkeldanga has the following interesting features and history ¹ ² ³:
- The cemetery was founded when Shalom Aharon Obadiah ha-Cohen, the leader of the Jewish community in the city asked for a plot of land from a Bengali friend for use as a cemetery for his community.
- The first burial was of Hacham Moses de Pas Shaliah of Safad, on January 1, 1812, but his grave cannot be traced today.
- The cemetery contains two genizot, which are places where pieces of paper with the name of God or papers with Hebrew writing are kept.
- The graves in the cemetery are uniformly low, standing at about three feet, in adherence to the Jewish belief that the body should return to the earth as soon as possible.
- The cemetery contains a prayer hall that was erected by Mrs. Gala David Gubbay in memory of her father.
- The cemetery also contains a vault meant to store cash that is dropped into it during burials, to be collected annually for charity or maintenance of the cemetery.
