  • Are you interested in using cover crops to implement no-till production on your farm, but unsure of how to manage your cover crops so they don’t become a problem for the crop that follows?
The most common management concern is when to crimp your cover crop to get a good kill but prevent it from setting seed.
Getting the timing right on crimping small grain cover crops like rye isn’t difficult, it just takes a little attention to its growth stage. CFSA's Farm Services Coordinator, Mark Dempsey, gives a quick run-down on how to get the timing right.

This is the 1st person to actually explain the water, milk and dough stages of winter rye. Thanks

This is exactly what I needed to know. Great video! Thanks.

Marks a wealth of information! Great video. Thanks for sharing. Would mowing be another method that could be used successfully to terminate? Maybe followed by a silage tarp?

I don't have rye but I do have some tall grass 5' tall ready to go to seed and needs rolled. I filled my roller with water because the roller is a smaller roller crimper of 5' wide. It is a chevron style crimper and works well. This is my first time rolling and found quite a bit of the tall grass starting to bounce back up. I plan to put in a cover crop after rolling then let that grow and I'll then terminate again. Much of what I will be growing will be a 12 seed mix cover crop from then on. Im only working with an acre of land. I intend to work a market garden so will be intensively using this land. Does watering before rolling help? Does it matter? This grass has mature seed on the stalks. I know I will have more grass growing but my hope is to terminate earlier next year. It is a start. Any ideas to help? I have a bunch of short grasses that did not seem affected by the roller and are still standing. Those short grasses are ok with me. They can be part of the growing earth here. We use no pesticide but because of continued tilling over the years my soil is in poor health.

How long does it take, in general, from when rye greens up in spring to the flowering stage where you may be able to start crimping? Just looking for an approximate

If bounce back is an issue, why not chop the cover crop low and leave in place? If the plot is small enough, is this not a viable alternative to crimping?

Was wondering this as well. Couldn't one just do a tractor deck mower, 6-8" off the ground to kill the rye, leave the thatch while not clumping, and have the same affect?

Use a sickle bar. Less fuel, less compaction, lower initial investment. (Creamer, N. G. et al. 1995. A method for mechanically killing cover crops to optimize weed suppression. 10:157-162)
