This fourth-generation Ford Escape went into production for model-year 2020. Today, four years into its production run, a major styling update has been applied that’s perhaps most visible in the new front grille and headlamp treatment with the so-called 'coast-to-coast' light bar. Elsewhere, a unique rear bumper garnish and tailgate spoiler help round out the looks, and shoppers will notice that just about every exterior surface of the Escape ST-Line is painted for a more premium look with more glossy paint and less unfinished plastic.
Opening the door to the updated interior, I wasn't sure where to look first: the quilted leather seats, or perhaps the more than 13-inch wide display screen - a huge visual that communicates the Escape’s goal of delivering a driving environment that's relaxing and upscale, but also that puts plenty of tech within reach.

wifey got the 2023 top trim of this for a rental and after a single drive she handed the keys to me so she could drive my rustbucket ancient mazda 3 bk sedan instead. She said she felt unsafe because of how disconnected the ride felt from the road. After I got to drive it too, I must say I really dislike the direction new cars have taken. Inside feels too isolated makes you wanna fall asleep if traffic is boring. That Ford escape looked pretty but she was right--it did not spark joy where it most counts--when in motion. Felt like a lethargic imprecise obese vehicle. The tech was dissatisfactory too--a knob that feels yuck to turn for a gear selector, a tiny button for a parking brake, car stops and engine keeps turning off at all the red lights, all the vent controls in the touch screen some so far away, a washed out reverse camera and skewed and distorted birds eye camera when reversing. The button placements for music controls on the steering wheel was split up for some reason. All of this was infuriating. Just a lot of dumb design decisions. Absolutely not worth the price they are demanding. I will hold on to my early 2000s-2010s era sedans and suvs for now until I find something newer where the practicality and driving dynamics doesn't suck.
