  • I bought a Warmoth Strat neck of birdseye maple. Is this neck as good as it gets especially for the money? Find out in this close up review.
    What you will learn:
    How good is the quality?
    Were the specifications correct?
    Do the frets need work?
    Is the wood properly dried?
    Am I able to make choices of fret types?
    Can I buy an unfinished neck?
    Are there many wood choices?
    Is there any guarantee?
    What if something goes wrong?
    Over the years I have made about six or seven guitars. Often Fender types (because they are easier to create successfully) and I have used genuine Fender parts either brand new, or from stripped Fender guitars, or alternatives that are Fender licensed from companies like Warmoth who are based in Seattle.
    At first I was like most guys, a bit careful about buying from such a distance (I live in the UK) but I need not have been. The first neck I bought did have something to be desired regarding the fret ends and I had much work to correct those ends that were honestly not very well finished. But those sort of things are a thing of the past thankfully.
    Since those times I have had excellent service from Warmoth (beginning in around 2010) and I have never had to send back a single item for any reason. I tend to buy the better components, but surprisingly Warmoth make things like guitar necks literally from about £100 (or $160) which is exceptional for the quality that you get.
    This particular neck featured here cost $340, but I do also have to pay for shipping and for the UK's 20% tax thanks to being a member country of the EU... but not for long :).
    Check out this purchase of a Warmoth birds eye maple neck and see just how good it really is.
    I bought this neck and the video is completely unsponsored by anyone - these really are my own views based on buying the equipment personally.

    That's a really smart looking neck Tony. Looking forward to the rest of the build. I don't think I have the skills to build a parts guitar but if you make it look more straightforward than I believe it is I may be tempted to have a go with some cheaper parts. Stay well

      Hi cramster (I know your brother... hamster) just joking! When I bought the parts for my very first 'parts caster' I was thinking just like you are - can I do it? probably not :( - but in reality it really is not that hard to achieve a great result especially with the parts as they are today. Honestly... it is pretty easy and if nothing else get a cheaper 'kit' and mess around with it and there is no doubt that you will learn. But from my own experience - while I wanted to learn, I also wanted a decent guitar at the end of the work - so I did NOT buy a cheap Chinese guitar kit which often is not actually that good. I guess you get what you pay for. So I bought reasonable parts over time and made a video of that guitar. That video to date and still on RUclips has had (in total over three parts) 1.4 Million views. Yes... my FIRST guitar. So let me inspire you to have a go, whatever you do you should at least try this stuff and I'm sure that you would arrive at a good result. Let me know if ever you do and stay safe.

They are ending it soon for a sort of half hearted approach of different levels of 'lock down' - needless to say I'm in the worst level area. Business is entirely squashed currently - and at work were getting about ten calls a day, although we prefer to be there to offer support etc. so you could say I'm safe... :) financially hard imposition by the government though.

    Hello, great channel. I’ve built quite a few guitars both from parts and carving my own wood. To answer your query regarding the tuner anchor holes; there are multiple footprints for tuners, no reason to have to fill a hole if you aren’t going to use a specific tuner. I prefer vintage style which has a totally different footprint than the Fender standard two hole tuners you described.
    Cheers

    • @tonymckenziecom
      @tonymckenziecom  3 года назад

      Great to hear that you have done this stuff and certainly you're braver than me - I have not carved any! Credit to you. I understand about the holes. Warmoth have many options for the tuners when you're buying the neck - but the locator points is NOT an option even though the 'Schaller' hole size for the tuners is offered. It is a bit weird IMO. The locator holes are not there by default... but they simply don't offer the option. Obviously if the locator holes were there on all the necks that would be a problem :). But great point as it helps to clarify what you can get when ordering the neck from Warmoth in particular. Choices are: Gotoh, Planet Waves, Schaller, Sperzel and Vintage as you said ( 11/32). But no locators for the Schaller Tuners which the Fender ones are. You did not say if you had bought from Warmoth but I assume not? It matters not really, but it was an anomaly that can create aggro later when you try and fit them :) Thanks for the comments and for watching. Stay safe.

    Got a Warmoth Wizard profile maple/maple neck (used), a couple years ago and put it on a Squier classic vibe 60s body. It is easily my favorite neck to play on now. The closest to my beloved 1985 Ibanez Roadstar II neck I've ever played. As far as those two fender tuner guide holes not being drilled, I found a 3d printer file for a template and had one made and shipped to me. It works perfectly and cost me about $4,00 US.. A lot cheaper than a jig.

      Oh I agree. Much of what life is really about is often 'lost' on the internet and its misrepresentation these days IMO. Let's face it, the news we might read is not trustworthy any longer it seems, the charlatans operating Facebook and Twitter and others are in pursuit of one thing... money, and then there are the plain old nasty types. I doubt even music for some of them would help. Seems to me that there are some where they strive only for 'money' or power or both (or its forms) and no amount actually stops them no matter how high they climb. They have no scruples. It's a crazy world and society we live in and one very different than I was bought up in... but you are right for the most of us music is a wonderful thing and since back in 67 when I first heard in my school leaving 'party' the Beatles singing 'we can work it out' I latched on to the music and never looked back. Music is a brilliant thing without equal. Of course as I got older I 'learned' about brilliant musicians like Hendrix, Santana and so many more since. And I guess if you play music it's a great time to be around... virus or no virus! :)

    To my untrained eye $340 seems quite expensive although I appreciate the bird’s eye maple is a factor. What would you pay for a more standard neck such that you would find on an American Standard Strat ( or the current equivalent) ? Love the detail in your review!

    • @tonymckenziecom
      @tonymckenziecom  3 года назад +1

      Indeed the standard neck from Fender can be bought... but scarily (and I have bought them check my build videos) it costs about the same here in the UK :( one reason I have opted historically for stratosphereparts or Warmoth as prices tend to be somewhere in the right but often similar range, unless I get Warmoth to make one specially. For example at stratosphereparts a Jeff Beck genuine high quality neck is about $550, but it is a very premium neck. Thanks for watching this stuff and stay safe.

      To be honest I don't know them... there are so many different makers out there these days it would be hard for me to keep up with. But if you find a supplier that is really good and the pricing etc. are reasonable for the quality that they supply then that's a great reason to stick with them. It's one reason why I stuck with Warmoth because usually it's pretty good stuff. It IS expensive especially for here in the UK with the shipping PLUS 20% tax but I tend to usually stick with what I know works for me. In the UK guitarbuild seems a pretty good option for the lower cost bodies and necks but they don't seem to have the flamed and exotic woods so much = but the quality is fine. Anyway thanks for the info and I will take a look at that brand. Stay safe and do come back when you have the body for an opinion on that....

    How to learn to build a guitar
    1. modify an of the shelf instrument
    2. Build from parts

To be honest on the retail (selling any one of the ones I have made) side of things I have only ever sold two guitars, one in the UK and the other to a really great guitar player and I did near enough get the money back that it cost me so I think that a lot of it comes down to making a 'killer' guitar and seems those keep the money... different markets and things though might have different results. I'll be staining this neck and the body when it comes and then finishing it all myself. Ah I know it well :) A very interesting guitar and the 'gold' and blue worked wonderfully well. Later from the original pickups (those were Seymour Duncan Antiquity pickups) I later fitted the Fender series four ones - which on a guitar that has routed pickup holes is very difficult. The reason is that the V4 noiseless pickups are really bordered on being too deep. At the bottom of those on each pickup are two screws and at the very least you have to drill a bit to accommodate those. Also the factory wires come out of the bottom of the back plate and that stops them being fitted because of the space. I refitted the wires over the top of the back plate (not recommended) and that just about allows the clearance. I should have routed the holes a little and I might just go back and do that some time - and of course I'll make a video of doing that. Overall a real 'looker' of a guitar and I also do like the V4 pickups - the Antiquities originally installed were very 'smooth' in tone, but I tend to play rock so a bit 'pussified' (is that a word). The neck is brilliant and recommended but they tend to go for about $550 or by the time they land here in the UK about £500 so are expensive. But my view is that you could not buy one of those guitars like that one specified for anything like the money. Ha it IS my wife's favorite guitar... but she just judges them by how they look :) They all do that don't they? :)

    I bought a Warmoth neck and was dis-appointed. Frets were terrible, I know they don’t fully finish them but these looked like they just hammered them in and sent it off with razor blade ends. The neck profile was the the complete wrong one, sent me a deep “V”, not what I ordered and very uncomfortable, plus it was slightly back-bowed. I ordered the nut to be installed, which it was, but all marked up.The only thing they got right was my wood selection, quatersawn baked maple with a rosewood board. It really felt like they didn’t care about me as a paying customer, I couldn’t believe this was allowed out the door. I’ve ordered two necks from All Parts, that apart from finishing and hardware, fret job was playable (fret finishing still needed for perfection) out of the box and the wood is great quality, much happier at half the price.

      Hey JN I assume you sent that back? They have at least a 30 day return policy and as long as you have not done anything with it they take it back from what I believe. Some years back I did have similar issues with Warmoth fret ends in particular... and I was not happy with those. But about three or four years ago it seemed to change and I have not had a bad one since. Mine are always shown for the fret ends because of my historical experience with them, and I have even resorted to buying necks like the Fender Jeff Beck from stratosphereparts but those tend to be a bit expensive too.
      I certainly would have been back to Warmoth on the neck you mentioned. I have bought some allparts bits n pieces but not recently. Thanks for the info on those and how you found the parts because it all matters and from a buyer of the bits that really counts to me to hear your opinion too! Indeed I will relook at allparts based on your comments... honestly I'm not biased but I tend to stick with what works for me if you get that. Thanks JN... and stay safe.

    IMHO - The neck is the most important part of a guitar. That maple-birdseye figuring is awesome. Money well spent.

      I agree on the neck aspect its the interface for the guitarist. Not so good neck and if anyone is like me I just don't get too inspired when playing then the music slows down or stops. A guitar is the perfect vehicle along with a great tube amp to create very good music IMO. Glad you liked this neck - I do to. It should be awesome when all completed. Stay safe.

    Congratulations that you like your Guitar Necks from Warmoth.
    I recently bought three Guitar Necks and Warmoth, body and two load of strap bodies to build three different guitars .
    Warmoth had a great reputation so I went for a big purchase assuming it would be of at least average quality .
    All three of those Warmoth, Guitar Necks are the most Buzzy Guitar Necks I have ever played
    I spent $500 on two of those Warmoth necks to get them , pleked.
    Still a little to no improvement .
    When I contacted Warmoth sales department .
    Jeff told me plecking, Guitar Necks will void their warranty forever.
    I would suggest going with Aluminati Guitar Necks , that is my next move
    I will sell all three of these Guitar Necks for a big loss .
    Aluminati Guitar Necks are guaranteed for life and Precision machined perfectly
    Nobody is carving words or hammering in Frets by hand .
    It is a perfectly molded aluminum guitar neck with a carbon, fiber, fretboard and stainless steel frets .
    Starting at $800 with any color texture imaginable .
    Do you want a gold silver black or purple red blue?
    They even have a bad ass green, which looks like no other neck out there .
    Go, Aluminati !!!!
    Warmoth kiss my ass !!!
    I give a rats ass to what any of you Warmoth fans think
    this is an honest review, no holds barred .😅

      Thanks for your opinion - and seems you had some issues. I must say, regardless of anything else, that MY reviews are entirely genuine and guess what, just like you I bought and paid for every single thing I have ever had from Warmoth. Their necks used to be problematic re frets and finishing and I entirely agree with that comment. I have had them. But that was honestly years ago (probably over 5 years ago in fact) and the stuff I have bought from them in some years has been pretty much fine. I have never bothered with the plek stuff as I never found the need to have to go that far really. But great that you have posted your opinion based on your experience and that is exactly what you should do! Thanks for watching too.

      Thanks for the info. I only make for myself actually... sometimes I will put the logo on, but only for my own benefit really. Sometimes I'll buy a real Fender neck (from www.stratosphereparts.com) like a Jeff Beck neck which are very good but expensive, but also sometimes I buy a Warmoth neck because its a licensed neck also. I guess I'm supporting Fender one way or the other :). Thanks and stay safe.

    The only problem i see is thats just plain sawn and not the quality it could've been if it was quarter sawn. But that would add to the cost. hi Tony : )

    I have no understanding why you claimed that this is the best neck for a Stratocaster? I never buy anything through the mail especially guitar stuff if my hands are going to play it I have to take it for a test drive 4 a couple hours before I pay for it, obviously I'm not a gambler!

    • @tonymckenziecom
      @tonymckenziecom  2 года назад +6

      Ha I get that of course. But when I buy a guitar neck made to an exact standard with everything exactly as I ordered then there is generally literally nothing I'm gambling with. Sadly at the moment I might otherwise agree because many companies are not what they were when this neck was purchased and Warmoth being one of them. I honestly hope that they all get back to their pre virus status and that they employ guys and grow the business back to where it was. If I bought 'any old' neck then your points are entirely valid... try buying a Chinese replacement neck... if you want to waste your money. Good point and thanks for commenting and watching.

      Oh man tell me about it.... but it's not the Brexit thing that bothers me but more so the plague (I'll call it that) that has proved fatal to many. Brexit is just a pimple on your arm, the other thing? Well that takes all parts and leaves you with none. I know here we're suffering from all of that virus but Brexit? nah I really don't think Brexit was what it was all made out to be whether in or out. Stay safe!

      You too mate, when are you going to make my guitar, I know I do keep going on about it lol. Funny I was looking over your previous vids, you have built some great guitars love that strat still it looks superb. Maybe you could have a look at my Warfdale TCT 50 head sometime I think it could do with some new valves like me lol. It makes a click every now and again like it’s got a dry joint.

      Check the tubes (preamp) and reseat them if it's got tubes? I don't know that amp. Sometimes preamp tubes get sort of soiled pins and can cause crackles...

    • @tonymckenziecom
      @tonymckenziecom  3 года назад

      They are over priced - but cheaper if you're in the USA by a good way. I think the payment in licensing for the headstock also contributes to a higher price, where some companies just copy, at least Warmoth does pay for the license. Thanks and stay safe.
