How America's left is preparing for escalating violence | DW News

- There are fears that a polarizing election will further inflame the culture war in the US. This week the Department of Homeland Security warned of a rise in right-wing terrorism -- the potential targets including the LGBTQ community as well as racial and ethnic minorities. While the debate over gun controls remains deadlocked in Washington, some say the best protection for “vulnerable groups" is to give them guns as well.
The Socialist Rifle Association’s answer to gun violence in the US is to arm “vulnerable populations” - meaning Black communities, LGBT people, and women. Through firearms training and advocacy, they hope to “take back the monopoly on gun ownership” from the right wing. I’ve interviewed them at an outreach event, and filmed with them at a shooting range as well as a first-aid training. At a public outreach event in a Washington D.C. park, the Socialist Rifle Association finds an audience for its message that there’s an arms race in this country whether you like it or not, and the right-wing is winning by a long shot.

When I am suppose to feel safe? When everyone is carrying a gun? One hundred and fifty years ago on the western frontier everyone carried a gun. The city of Dodge in the the 1880s had a homicide rate 300 times higher than Miami in the 1980s. Every statistic shows that the more guns you have the higher the homicide rate rises. And I'm not even from the US. I'm from Sweden. Looking at the US from the outside, it almost seems like it's a country living in a completely different era than all of the other countries of the west. A different century almost. The US may not be at war with an outside nation like we see in Ukraine, but they are very much still at war with themselves. And I am skeptical that more guns = safer communities, regardless of agenda. If there were no guns at all than perhaps, but that's unlikely to ever occur because guns are sacred in the US for reasons I have yet to grasp. Again, that's something entirely unique to the US as far as western countries go.

This deadly challenge imposes upon our society two requirements of direct concern, both to the press and to the president. Two requirements that may seem almost contradictory in tone but which must be reconciled and fulfilled if we are to meet this national peril. The need for far greater public information. The need for far greater official secrecy. The very word secrecy is repugnant in a free and open society. We are as a people inherently and historicaly opposed to secret societies to secret oaths and to secret proceedings. We decided long ago that the dangers of excessive and unwarranted concealment of pertinent facts far outweigh the dangers which are sighted to justify it. Even today there is little value in opposing the threat of a closed society by imitating its arbitrary restrictions. Even today there is little value in insuring the survival of our nation if our traditions do not survive with it. There is very grave danger that an announced need for increased security will be seized upon by those anxious to expand its meaning to the very limits of official censorship and concealment.

If you actually visited here its a lot different. I have started to just step away from a lot of this because it gets tiring. Everyday is just pretty normal. Nothing bad happens like everything I see on TV or online. Call it ignorance but only negative stuff is sales on TV and the internet. Much more mundane and positive stuff on life here. Also if you avoid areas that are just known to have issues like major cities and the west coast.
I realize I see all this negative stuff about the US and would get really heated. But in real life there is none of that. At least for me. Media just makes everything more negative because that's what sales.
💪✋💭 While promoting non-violence is essential, it is crucial to acknowledge the inherent right to self-defense. The line between self-defense and violence can be subjective and debated. Understanding the complexities surrounding this topic sparks curiosity about how individuals and societies define and navigate the concept of self-defense in different circumstances. It invites discussions on finding peaceful resolutions while ensuring personal safety and protection.

It's a bit obvious isn't it? If you're getting robbed at gun point and you also have a gun, you are far more likely to get shot over that robbery than if you had just cooperated with the thief.
