Right on Andrew. Got my copy 3 days after the release thankfully and I'm still digesting it...It has a lot of "good intentions" let's say but cannot compete with other hybrid cameras. In reality this camera is a camera for current Leica shooters and it's the best they have released. I enjoy it with M Glass and I too wish the camera punch in right in the head / body or subject being highlighter. I don't know if you noticed, but half press of the shutter and turn of the focus ring brings up magnification automatically. I find that really cool and useful. I use the Spot focus as the other modes seem to be a bit of a hit and miss.
Glad to hear that you're getting along with it! I can't wait to dive into one properly, and no I didn't notice that half press shutter technique, I'm assuming that's with an autofocus lens?
I love shooting my M lenses on my SL2, which is about all I use it for these days except for the 90MM L prime, which is a superb portrait lens. In-camera IBIS and viewfinder fantastic with M lenses. I use my M10-R for street work and just for the fun of it, but serious work i use the SL2/M combo. I bought an a7r5 last Fall for wildlife and BIF, since the SL2/Leica L-Mount combo was useless due to the inferior autofocus and clunky, slow. The SL3 seems on a par with the better Lumix cameras, which are not comparable to the top Sony models. Don't see dropping an additional $7000 on an SL3 just to shoot M lenses and the 90mm L.
Additionally, it is good to know that a 16” MacBook fits into that bag. (I hate to think, however, what that bag costs. I have “Oberwerth” set as a saved search, on evil bay, so, I occasionally buy pre-owned Oberwerth, in order to spend less.)
Just a warning. I lost images from my SL3 during a wedding. They simply disappeared. After lots of discussions with Leica, they released a letter to me stating that they are experiencing this issue with many other customers, and are working on a firmware update to resolve this. They state that... "Unfortunately, with the current firmware of the Leica SL3, the camera malfunctioned in individual cases, which can lead to images that have already been saved being overwritten unnoticed. We deeply regret this. Our highest priority is to restore the perfect functionality and usual reliability of your Leica SL3 as quickly as possible. To this end, we are working intensely with our development team to provide you with a firmware update to fix the error as soon as possible." Please be careful!! Apparently it happens when changing batteries out. The camera goes back and records over your images using the same file numbers, so there's no way to recover them. It's insane!
That’s completely unacceptable and it’s disappointing that Leica continues to use its initial consumers as beta testers over and over again. I guess it’s the byproduct of such a low volume camera manufacturer. Sorry to her that you had to experience that loss. Hopefully the firmware update remedies the file base issues.
Shame considering the A7rV beats it with a useable 8 stops. However the SL3 & 24-90 combo had the smoothest handheld footage I’ve seen judging by the screen. So I’d like to test that once I get my hands on a SL3 for longer.

@@GenericPhotographer So the difference in picture quality is very small or even indistinguishable between these two. Sony being better when it comes to video and autofocus and Leica having a better at build quality and menu? :) Even though A7R V build quality is great, super solid. But 24-70 g master is just top notch lens.
The SL has always been the EVF alternative to a Leica M for me. There are definitely improvements that I didn’t brush up on with the SL3 concerning AF.
The SL3 is too expensive, the EVF and IBIS is not as good as the SONY A7V, evn the dynamic range of the SL3 is slightly less than the SONY, so about double the money to have a small red dot on your Camera, NO ! I have the SONY A7RV, it is an excellent Camera and the Lenses you can get to it is outstanding good, fx ZEISS, Voigtländer APO-Lanthar and SONY GM Lenses. I have had many Cameras through 45 years, Canon, Nikon, Minolta, Olympus, Leica, Hasselblad and I used large format 4x5" and 5x7" Cameras as a professional photographer, but the SONY A7RV are the best Camera that I have worked with ! Remember that in the 1970´s and the 1980´s, it was more or less Minolta that saved Leica ! SONY bought Minolta.
It wasn’t always easy for Sony either. I’ve been shooting Sony since 2008 and I’ve definitely had my issues with them, especially for long term support. That said my A7rV is still my favorite tool. I just wish it inspired me more…and that’s what I’m hoping the Leica can do. Leicas have never been about spec sheets but rather they prioritize the experience and creative process. All digital cameras are more or less early capable of producing quality images. It’s just tech and user experience that differentiates them at this rate. I don’t plan on buying a SL3 personally but it’s nice to know that I could find something comparable in the Leica world.

I do not care about brand name, but I will not buy a camera that are overprized just because of hype and some think it is posh. I can get inspired to photograph, no matter the brand name !!! The SONY A7RV are a superb Camera, much better than SL3 and to about half the price, what´s not to like !!! I think the SL3 is too big, too heavy and I think it is ugly.

5 stops i think? they had to rethink the shutter and that reduced the ibis.

Depends on your needs! If I didn’t have a use case for the 24-70gm II and all my video work. I’d be be all over the SL3 for my M glass alone.

Not for me .I`ve had the 2s for some years and the AF isn`t good when things start moving. It doesn`t sound as if there has been much improvement .

@@GenericPhotographer Yes, I use my 2s as an EVF alternative for my M lenses . I shoot a 246 so the 2s is my colour body for the M lenses.
