I’m not even the one who normally has to deal with most of the household cleaning things. But I can’t stop laughing and watching either! I love my wife so much for what she does.. which includes handling 3 kids and hand washing laundry! We’ve worked out a daily routine and I’m always on the lookout for ways to make things easier for her. I’ve also never realized how we have things structured is so close to this method! Every Wednesday we have assigned to deep clean a certain room, or to wash bedding depending on what Wednesday of the month it is. Otherwise we have 5 days set aside for certain laundry items. 1 day of the week (one of the days I’m home) are project day! I handle kids, she works on anything she wants to do. Might have to try the timer method. Anyone else tho wish you had more days in the week or tried a method detached from the 7 day work week?

The routines sound awesome - but would love to see a cleaning method for households where both adults work 10 hours outside of the home every weekday.
I’ve been making an effort to keep the sink clear by putting the dirty dishes right into the dishwasher and emptying the clean dishes as soon as they are dry. It’s made a huge difference! I’m working on adding some other small things like that to my list (and my husband’s) that we do daily before/after work

The Fly Lady system is the shortest routine I've ever seen. The basic routine is about half an hour a day. There are two key ideas: pare your stuff down to a minimum (declutter) because everything you have needs to be cleaned. A minimalist home is the easiest to clean. She goes so far as to say that you don't do the 15-minute zone cleaning until your home is decluttered. The second is that you time your chores; you stop when the timer goes off. A lot of people don't get that part and think that you're supposed to keep going until a task is complete, which can take hours. That's not how it works.

One of the best tips I ever learned is to keep one of those dish wands, the ones that hold the dish soap inside, in your shower somewhere and every time you shower, right before you get out, or while you’re waiting for your conditioner to soak, take the wand (I keep blue dawn in mine) and just do a quick pass over your shower walls and floor. It will always be clean and this tip has helped save me so much time scrubbing!
Also the RUclips channel “The Secret Slob” has great ways to tweak the FlyLady’s system to meet your family’s specific needs. Loving your channel! Thanks for all the effort and hard work you out into your videos. It shows and we all appreciate you ❤️

I used to be a Flybaby, and there are a still a few things I have held onto. Probably the most often used is "soap is soap" - which is great for the tail end of bottles of soap, body wash, shampoo, etc. If you're wiping surfaces regularly and doing the daily swish in the toilet, you can get by without using harsh chemicals daily and put to use the remnants of those bottles that would otherwise not get used.

This is also something that I have held onto from my flybaby days😂. I don’t know why this was such a revelation to me back then, but it was. The idea that I didn’t need all of these special cleaners was mind boggling to me as a new (often broke) mother. Now I’m an almost 50 year old mother of grown children and this is the first thing I taught them about cleaning their own spaces.

Shining your sink is done nightly. The big clean is only the first time.
Keeping the kitchen sink clean every night makes a big difference in waking up to a clean workplace in the morning
What I’ve learned is that it takes a LOT less time and effort to keep a place clean than to do a major cleaning every few weeks.
My favorite day is Wednesday, anti-procrastination day. Most of those procrastinated things only take a short time, but have a lot of tension attached. It’s great to be able to let go of the tension

I've never seen a shorter routine, ever. The basic routine is about half an hour a day, not including dishes and laundry. The keys are #1. paring down your decor (declutter) because everything you own needs to be cleaned. She goes so far as to say that you don't do the zne cleaning until you declutter. #2. Time your chores and stop when the timer goes off. Don't keep going. Many people don't get that and think they have to keep going until a task is complete. That isn't the idea. That's why she divides the home up into weekly zones, and you work on one zone for 15 minutes per day.

The 31 Babysteps are WAY better intro to Flylady. 3 separate daily routines, zones, daily tasks, et cetera are advanced, for ppl that have gotten bare bones down and expanding what they can do. Diane in Denmark has a great series on babysteps and further instructions. My sister decided to get baskets for her clothes and make sure that all of her clothes are things that don't wrinkle and now she just sorts them into baskets instead of folding. I don't have space for that, but when my twins were like 1 I decided I couldn't keep up on their laundry and that there was no point in folding anything because their clothes are so small. They are 4 now and folding would be better, but I'm not gonna do it until I can teach them how to do it. I have been slowly naturally passing laundry off to them anyways. They know what drawers all their clothes go in and can sort their laundry. They help with washing the clothes. I'm sure by the time they turn 5 thet will probably be managing all of their laundry themselves (except washing since our washer and dryer are outside and that's still a little young to be unsupervised with chemicals.)
I can't get my own laundry folded, I refuse to fold theirs, I recommend it.

I still do so much of this. Not the having a clean house part (or exercise), but sink-shining before bed, hot spots, cleaning the bathroom while I'm in there anyway, but the big one is: putting on my shoes. Decluttering 15 minutes a day instead of zone cleaning like FlyLady says to do in the beginning wasn't enough. I didn't know how to declutter effectively. That's where Dana comes in. Her main thing is decluttering without making a mess and it works. You look for trash and duh donations first, then put things where you would look for them first. I absolutely love her schedule and the way she does things the only issue I have with that is I’m OCD and things had to be done the right way the first time and I cannot leave a task undone it’s just not something I’m capable of doing so if I go over the 10 minutes then so be it it’s on me but by the time I’m done not only my tired but I’m satisfied because my house is clean and I can relax and it allows me to sleep a lot easier

Love your advice. You’re sweet, honest, entertaining and not pretentious at all. Cleaning the shower while IN the shower is such an epiphany. I’ve rubbed off little globs of conditioner here and there but cleaning the whole thing while it’s already soaked from me showering would make it so quick and easy.
Edit: I used to keep my curtains shut because the bright light seemed intrusive and too intense but I’ve started collecting houseplants so now I’m opening curtains ☀️ and even changing some of my heavy drapes to lighter sheers for my 20 beautiful 🪴 plants to receive plenty of light. It’s weird how I never realized how I kept the house so dark before 🤷🏼‍♀️

I'd never heard of flylady before this vid, but it reminds me of stuff my grandmother would do (which is by no means a bad thing) I'm super forgetful and get clutterblind, so I have to chain items together. I unload the dishwasher in the am (or run it because I forgot to last night...) When I have a dirty coffee mug to put away, and I brush my teeth when I get home from work...because I won't remember it before bed. It's been helpful establishing new good habits by stapling them to already ingrained ones.

Davis at Struggle care is to keep two baskets in your car: one for trash and one for things that need to go back into the house (reusable water bottles, cloth masks, etc). It makes weekly cleanup so much easier.

I'm an older lady, a recent widow. I tried flylady when she was new, years ago. I liked the 15 minutes a day concept and to not feel like you need to catch up or finish a room completely. I tried again recently to get her emails and was overwhelmed. I got a lot of spam type emails and 1 email with actual info, daily. I unsubscribed. It's not like it used to be. While I'm glad she's found a way to make money online, the it's all too monetized for me now. I would like to figure out the zones again for me now, but it was too overwhelming. So far I like your channel. I need a routine that is simple.

I've been trying this this week. I really like that she includes breakfast, getting completely dressed, exercise and drinking water into her routine. These are things I am trying to incorporate and so it helps to just have it as part of the routine already. Because she does not talk about dishes, quick tidies, or putting the kitchen to bed, I added a quick tidy to the morning and evening routines. I also changed "shine your sink" to "put kitchen to bed." Other than that I really like the system!

I've watched a bunch of your videos over the past few weeks, and I think I am going to give Fly Lady a try! One of my customizations will be skipping the make your bed step - after decades of feeling kind of bad that I almost never make my bed, I realized...I don't actually care that much if my bed is made😂 There are plenty of other tasks that make a big difference in how my home feels to me, but that just isn't one of them. I think the most helpful thing about this system for me would be pushing past my perfectionism. Often I don't even start something because I know I don't have the time/energy/motivation to do it perfectly.

Great video! One thing I struggle with is sharing all those tasks: I don't want to be the only one cleaning up the house but Flylady's program seems to be very focused on one person doing everything. Any idea how to share the tasks with my spouse? We've mostly been doing things together but I feel like sometimes we could each be doing a separate task...

    • @ThatAwkwardMom
      @ThatAwkwardMom  2 года назад +4

I guess you could assign half the tasks to your spouse! Maybe you could be in charge of the swish and swipe in the upstairs bathroom, he could be in charge of the downstairs. Maybe make a rule like whoever gets out of bed first makes the bed. You guys could even split the weekly home blessing down the middle and only have 30 minutes of cleaning each! You could zone clean the upstairs rooms, he could zone clean the downstairs rooms. Or if you don't have a two-story house then split up the rooms where you see fit. I'd say that's the best way to do it!
