  • In this video I take a look at the exiting new camera release from Canon, the XF 605 Camcorder. This thing is a beast, and I think might be in line to be crowned the new 'King of the Camcorders'.
The XF 605 is available though:
    ProAv
    CVP
Take a look below for some of the tech specs:
    Broadcast-quality video
The large1.0-Type CMOS sensor and DIGIC DV7 processor work in harmony to deliver 4K UHD 60P/50P in 4:2:2 10-bit XF-AVC and MP4, as well as FHD 120P HFR for exceptional image quality and flexibility in post-production.
    Professional optics and control
Resolve fine details with the 4K ready L-Series lens offering 15x optical zoom, and equipped with independent rings for Zoom, Focus and Iris control. Also featured are three Image Stabilisation modes, as well as built-in ND and infrared filters, offering even greater control.
    Advanced autofocus
Acquire pin-sharp focus on your subject’s eyes with Eye tracking AF, and intelligent head tracking via EOS iTR AF X, an innovative ‘deep learning’ technology to track a subject's head, even when looking away.
    Professional connectivity and streaming
Canon XF605 seamlessly integrates into live and offline environments, with 12G-SDI, Wi-Fi and Ethernet for IP streaming. The Content Transfer Mobile app enables the editing of News ML-G2 standard compliant metadata, transferring of footage to your iPhone, and direct uploading to FTP servers.
    Intuitive controls and customisation
Stay in control and customize the XF605 camcorder to your needs with Independent controls and 11 assignable buttons. An enhanced touchscreen interface allows for quick and intuitive control of on-screen settings, menu navigation and playback control. A new multi-function hotshoe opens the door for additional accessories with expanded capabilities.
    Recording versatility
Capture an expanded dynamic range in Canon Log 3 for flexibility in post-production, or shoot directly in broadcast-ready PQ or HLG HDR formats. Simultaneous recording to dual SD cards in a variety of formats offers maximum flexibility for your production needs.
    Shared colour science
XF605 supports the same colour matrices as Canon's Cinema EOS and EOS R System product ranges, reducing the time needed in post-production to match colour in footage from multiple camera ranges.
    Key Features:
    25.5-382.5mm - Wide angle 4K 15x L-Series zoom
    Autofocus
    Continuous 120P
    12G-SDI terminal
    1.0-Type CMOS Sensor & DIGIC DV7 Processor
    4K UHD 60P/50P 4:2:2/10-bit recording
    Canon Log 3, HDR (PQ/HLG)
High Frame Rate recording up to 120fps (FHD)
15x Optical Zoom L-Series lens (30x Advanced Zoom in FHD)
Enhanced Dual Pixel CMOS AF with Eye AF & EOS iTR AF X (Intelligent Head Tracking)
Dual SD card slots supporting simultaneous recording, multiple formats & Proxies

Great review and thanks for that! It's funny to me that you think of the camcorder as the "new way" to shoot corporate / event work ... that's been the standard for years before low-price cinema cams and dslr's capable of doing nice video! I never made the leap over to removeable-lens gear due to all the research, extra costs and futzing on set involved - I went from the XL-1 to the XH-A1, to HMC-150 and now a UX-90. At the higher end it was 3/4" and BetaCam / XDcam etc until recently... This XF605 might be my next cam, thanks for the info.

Sorry bout coming in so late after this review, looking into a pro camcorder..
Looking at your samples the image seems a bit on the greenish blue side. I assume this is straight out of the box,, auto white balance…
Have you found that post adjustment is necessary with this cam? As a comparison I’ve used the Sony z90 and out of the box the image is quite good, no adjustments.
Do you still recommend this camera?

In most cases it is not possible to choose a camera based on one attribute. You have to consider how each of them relates to the spread of your usage cases. If great low light UHD performance is your single requirement - there are likely to be others though - then although the XF605 is better than the 705 in this regard then a so called 1 inch sensor (really approx. 16 mm - 5/8 inch - diagonal ) is probably not for you. If you want great auto focus and manual assist, high quality 'L' series glass, decent zoom range, good ergonomics, down sampled HD etc etc then maybe it is the one you want. It's a case of horses for courses.

To be completely honest with you, while I had the flagship XF305 HD camera, I upgraded to Panasonic DVX200 4K camera. Then, when I compared the DVX200 with the new Canon XF705 and 605, I was disappointed because the Canon XF705 and 605, at the exact same ISO settings, was literally twice as dark as the Panasonic. I’m not sure why…

did you keep the XF605? I too want to replace my XF305...was the XF605 better in dim light than the XF305? The canon XF605 is quite expensive...but what other options with 1" sensors are out there? a true camcorder I mean...Thanks

    • @asafblasbergvideographer
      @asafblasbergvideographer Год назад

@@TheFandangovideoguy I did not keep the XF605. I purchased the Panasonic DVX200 which was twice as bright as the Canon with identical gain settings so that is the camera I recommend to buy. Unfortunately it is discontinued so you might find some available on eBay. If you must buy a new camcorder, I would still choose the XF605 because of its 15x zoom lens.

@@asafblasbergvideographer hmmm...I was hoping to get good news! I own the XF300 and also a XF100 and with stage lighting (I live events-dances etc), they are ok...HD only but very few clients need 4k...however when the lighting is dimmer (like in a Wedding reception or a dark church) they don't perform that well...I own a C100 mk2 with a Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 and I have used it for some parts of events but it's not a true run and gun camera, however the results are great. And finally I own a Canon 90d 7 Sony a6400 with good lenses and they are better in low ligh but, sometimes a camcorder is the right tool for the job. The XF300 has an 18x zoom and that has been very helpful. I almost bought a Canon XF400 but it's not a real XF camera-lacking external controls I need. I get paid to do jobs! I can't afford the XF705 and its too big anyways. I need it to be more portable so that I can put it on a monopod if neeed. Not just on a tripod. So I guess you didn't like the XF605-I wish I could rent one at VISTEK Toronto but they only have the XF705. I have seen some samples on youtube (some really bad ones shot by bad videographers and other videos looking really good-I guess C-Log and heave colour grading)-I even joined a XF705 facebook group where most owners are really enthusiastic about the camera-someone even told me that the XF605 could be pushed to 15db gain and that would be as clean as the XF300 at 0db...that would be great! But your experience was not as good it seems. I think my issue is the price! Honestly...$6,299 cdn plus tax (and Canon Japan has announced that there will be a 10% hike!)...almost the price of a C70 which again is not a camcorder but a great cinema camera...hell...for that price I could get two Sony FX30 maybe! BUT a good camcorder can be the right tool for some jobs. Anyway.'I'm talking too much...the DVX2000 is a 13Xzoom...do you do live events? I'd love to see a video shot with the DVX2000 by a fellow videographer. I know youtube is not the best quality but still...I dunno..if the XF605 was cheaper I may go for it right away! Thanks for your response-

Fantastic overview...I want to replace my old XF300 and XF100...and I need a camcorder for live events and concerts and even weddings! I have a C100 mk2 with decent glass for corporate and music videos (along with a Canon 90D) but they are not exactly run and gun...not really and I'm used to my xf300 for live events and concerts...whatever I buy MUST have 4k (even if I shoot mostly in 1080p)...so I looked at the XF400 but it wasn't a real XF camcorder...more like a consumer camera...and the XF705 is too much money for me...so this 605 looks promising..even with the 1" sensor...did you ever use the XF300? would this 605 be a lot better in low light and in 1080p than the XF300? Panasonic makes some nice 4k camcorders but they have tiny sensors...this 1" sensor may be a good compromise...any chance you could compare the video quality in good and low light against your C300 mk2? just wondering...thanks for the video...

I bought 3 to replace the xf300's - biggest thing is the low light performance - I actually still love the 300's but I could never go past +6db without the picture looking bad... you can really push this camera - only thing that stinks is the cost of the new batteries that you need to run for 3 hrs at a time... and you need UHS II cards if you are shooting in 4k60 - which is why I like this - what else on the market lets you shoot in either Long GOP or Intra in 4K60 for the price?

@@mediacreationsusa thanks so much for the response. My XF300 is great with good lighting but I never went over +9db for videos-and the XF100 is even worse in low light of course. So, it's good to hear that the XF605 is better in low light and it uses affordable memory cards but the battery is insanely expensive! $420 US!! ouch... I have seen a few more videos showing footage shot with the XF605 but I'm not convinced those people knew how to use it...I use my cameras fully manual and only leave the autofocus active, but some videos I have seen have been shot with the camera set to Auto I'm sure...substandard results...will you be posting any more videos feauring footage (after grading etc) shot with the XF605? You are a pro and I'm sure your videos will show just how good this camera can be. If you can share a link, great...if not, no worries. Thanks

@@TheFandangovideoguy I use full manual too - yes, the 605 is actually even better than the 705 in low light - I almost bought the 705s when they came out but I couldn't justify $7K per camera since I wanted to have 3 so I could perfectly match everything in post - don't get me wrong the 605 is not peanuts for sure, but the big thing that sold me was the low light performance and the way in which they approached all the different shooting modes and codecs - you can shoot in 4K and in 1080 at the same time if you want to. - I was actually planning on doing a comparison video with this and the XA50 and the XF300 - I don't own a 400 nor a 705 but I think it would still be something useful. - I'll post it on my own channel when I do it 🙂

I know other cameras can do that too, but I am the first to post short comings on cameras... Canon nailed the auto focus with these now and I still like their color science the best... there are gonna be trade offs with everything of course too - like the lenses f/2.8 app, and it's not constant until you get to f/4.8 but the cleaner gain makes up for that. Clog3 has like 12 stops of dynamic range or something... so, you really can have a fool proof camera. - my biggest hurdle now is a faster computer :-)

What were the specs on the test footage if you remember? Wide DR or Log? Thanks. Thinking about getting one as a B cam to my C70.

i get suggested a billion reviews of xf605. all are the same, talking specs, showing images of the camera. Either No fotage at all or as in this case, rapidly 30min walking outside filming whatever. I suspect all these videos are secretly sponsored. I think these reviews are bullshit.

Crappy old technology… The Sony A1 blows it out of the water in every possible way. 1 inch sensor? What the hell is that? You spend way too much time talking about the unimportant… Just got a flippy door that opens and closes to protect the lens… That’s a real reason to run out and get it. This whole video feels like a commercial for the camera. You sure you’re not being paid ?

Hey Allen, I'm not much for putting down any form of technology that allows people to create. I am most interested in how people use cameras practically. I also cant imagine using 5-6 Sony A1 setups for a multi-cam environment. I think its wise to consider merits of equipment that aren't just numbers on a spec sheet. That flappy door might just save your front lens element when your in transit, on the presumption that you have experienced losing a lens cap! Thank you for your input though, very insightful.

    • @2424rocket
      @2424rocket 2 года назад

@@catmate8358 Its an everything camera. It does it all at the highest level of technology. It'll make the Canon 605 look like it was made in 1990. Picture quality wise. Look up the reviews on line. Especially Gerald Undone. Also, check out the soon to be released Nikon Z9.

    Great Video. Really interesting.
This has alot of similarities (cosmetically) to the Sony HVR - Z5 / Z7.
Can I come and do some voluntary work with you in 2022 :) Subbed.
