it always amazes me when people manage to do a 24-hour challenge, because i don't do well after a certain hour when i'm *not* trying to stay awake 😅 but it looks like you approached this in the most sensibly unhinged way! it's great that you got so much done, but yes, as Bernadette also learnt - handsewing is going to take the same amount of time (or longer) when you are deprived of sleep, regardless of it being a speed challenge 😂 (also, totally down for historically-inspired pokémon gym leaders!)
As another person who watched the Bernadette Banner video and also thought 'I can do that [stay productive for 24 hours while admitting it's a bad idea] better' I absolutely love this video concept. Well done and well executed!
Love that you ramble as much as I do when I'm sleep deprived too. I've washed a large number of fleeces in the bath.. a couple of tips, if you'd like to use them.. I split fleeces into 2 parts, and stuff each part into it's own mesh laundry bag. Firstly it makes it easier to squeeze out water in the bath, BUT!! I follow that part by popping the 2 bags of wool into my washing machine and set it away on a spin only cycle. It takes far less time to dry on an indoor dryer when you spread it out.. or on an outside one, with sheets making a tent 😂 Hope you enjoyed your sleep when you got there. Thanks for the journey 😊
The wool thing is genius. (still watching, after a bad night and migraine morning, I sympathize so much with the zoning out, rambling on, and sudden, "why am I so cold now?" things)
Former shift worker, now retired. Wide awake and watching this at 1am. Never could get my body clock to work right. I think I live in the wrong time zone. 😃
The best intro ever. I was hooked from 10s in. Its magical to watch someone with my flavor of spicy brain do silly things I definitely dont have the spoons for (ie anything at 12-3am 😁)
The second surcoat is absolutely stunning, love the velvet/spiderweb pattern combo! The historical gym bosses idea is the coolest thing ever (and I would DIE if you ever did something with Lizard)
When I worked music festivals as a vendor, I would bring an entire new outfit including shoes to change into at lunch. It felt like a whole new day mentally and helped prevent post lunch sleepy 💯
As someone who has done 24-hour charity streams for the last 10 years [11th one is four weeks from today], I am shocked at your decision to go mid-day to mid-day. Bold move, friend! I am going to start implementing the change of clothes plan though. Brilliant idea!
Oh those paladin books >_> they were SO ROMANCE-Y. I spent 3/5thsof the books yelling at them to GO BACK TO THE INTERESTING AND-OR WORLD-BUILD-Y BITS!!! (with a big helping of JUST TALK TO EACH OTHER AND STOP ANGSTING AT MEEEEEEE. )
I completely agree with you that romances that hinge on people stupidly not talking to each other are unbearable. I call them hallmark romances. Give me a good reason, like a curse or imminent war between their respective countries or a something other than I'm too shy. Ill even take characters that have been damaged from previous relationships and so are rightfully wary. Stupid not talking will make me leave the book.
I'm so glad you did this instead of me! You are a delight to watch, whether you are competently making interesting clothes or rambling vaguely! Also my brain internalized NK Jemison instead of T kingfisher so I was attempting to google NK's paladin series... You will be shocked that it didn't get me anything useful :)
Wondering of LARPers would keep you company online as you have an online action sewing challenge and you're team have the challenge of holding off the hords
I literally used this video to inspire me to get on with my crunch project (trimming, pinning and hand sewing very fiddly appliques onto shorts for fantasy forest). With the events period of summer very much being underway, I wish everyone in the same situation luck!
That wool drying tent...actual genius. Ill be trying that out myself this weekend...maybe using an old tent upside-down??? Oh wow thats going to be excellent. Thank you for this idea!!
I like 5am Ash! Love CJ Cherrh although it's years since I read The Fortress in the Eye of time. Now my ebook TBR just got longer! I'm also fleece wrangling and they have a distinctive aroma...
I absolutely love this channel and I had to look up what LARP meant😂 Turns out my husband attended one before we were married! This maybe a new chapter in our lives!
all your plans & tips for staying awake for 24hrs were like going down a checklist of how I managed overnights for college & theatre in my 20s when I actually had to use my brain when tired. I wouldn't make it through even 24hrs these days (well, not intentionally), but they're good tips for staying awake, especially before that second wind kicks in- they got me through 40hrs, once. also, yes, velvet is hellishly messy and annoying, but that purple velvet is SO gorgeous!
I adore C.J. Cherryh!!! the Foreigner series is my favourite series of her, focused on an official Human Atevi translator / mediator (I'm a language nerd), there are large steed animals - horse like, but BIGGER. Yes, she is a thoroughly wonderful human, who broke the glass ceiling, winning prized as assumption was that initials were for a male author. Her word play, world building, utterly different series, she has an amazing formal educational C.V., and is a great human to follow on crack book. I also love the Chanur Series as a close second - Space Faring bipedal CAT like creatures.
T Kingfisher callout! I love the books. I think the gay one is well done, and she's one of my preferred ones for het romance, because her characters are so real. But yeah, they are all slow burn pining. My favorite parts are the gnoles. If you're looking for queer fantasy that doesn't center a romance, I recommend The Four Profound Weaves by R. B. Lemberg. The mood is more serious, and the worldbuilding is amazing.
Watching your video as I am about to do a little bit of sewing before midnight. Is it a good idea probably no. Is it a bad habit? Most certainly. I am admiring your productivity!
The most important takeaway here is that Vaporeon is, in fact, the best. I definitely want to make a Sabrina costume at some point but I never thought about doing a historical version. That is very tempting.
I often stay up 20-22 hours without even noticing. I am a night owl with a job that starts at 7am 😂. However being productive and doing sewing or knitting math for a full 24 hours. Not sure I could do it. But a day at work followed by hours binging a show, yup, I could do that easy 😅
Also, this was super delightful. I've done many theater shows where I'm set dressing, and I've pulled an all nighter in a haunted theater (the ghost of my favorite one is friendly, but annoying) painting faux woodgrain or wallpaper or something.
I prefer fantasy in most of it's shapes but you mentioned Cherryh. Try Cyteen if you want a doorstopper. Intense, yes it is future and clones and female lead and tangled relationships and head trips and just wow. You will know fairly soon into it if you hate it. Loving the video :)
watching your videos: always a delight (also often very informative and thought provocting) watching THIS video: absolutely amazing content I watch with a mix of "oh no" as in "I fee this" and "OH NO" as in "historical inspired Pokemon gym league is NOT on my list of things I want to do but it might as well be and I am now actively thinking about it" how dare ^^'
Quote of the video: "it's amazing what you can do when you're unsupervised" You couldn't pay me to stay awake 24hrs though. Soon as the sun is down I'm out
Truly genius. Love the capes on that coat. And C.J. Cherryh has got me through some rough times 💖Can recommend the first few books in the Foreigner series as an interesting SF/fantasy crossover. Rest well.
Manic, Fantastic, hyper and super sleepy. I've done all nighters and the body has its ways of throwing curve balls at you, but the mental rewards are amazing as those wee hours can really give an incite to life and getting things done. Now the light thing, you're probably going to want to stay away from that...
I put in a 24h workday once. Definitely do not recommend. (we had a tenant moving in that afternoon and were doing some flooring work int the apartment that was delayed by the shower stall tiling which was delayed by the plumber) I'm generally ok for 20h. But light is definitely important. And I don't do full all nighters, I need a couple hours nap somewhere in there because I start hallucinating at about 36h awake. And yeah, sleep dep can make me cold, that's usually a signal for me to either eat something or go to bed. And 30 seconds of jumping jacks was perfect for afternoon sleepies when I was in an office, though I don't know what my coworkers thought... My emergency wake-up is playing music that I know the words to, can't nod off if I'm singing. Though with neighbours, that has to be mitigated somewhat. I'm lucky to have a job now where I usually don't need an alarm clock, and my natural time when I get tired and want to go to bed is around 3 am. I have a bit of insomnia but it's mostly managed with having established a sleep hygeine shutdown procedure over a couple of years... I was having this stress response for a while where I'd wake up at 5 am so I told my body, "You do that again, we're going jogging." So next time I randomly woke up AWAKE, I put on my jogging shoes and off I went for a jog in the dark, and lo and behold, my body decided to stay asleep till a sensible time for at least a year after that. I learned that night that one of the parks I jog through during the day does not have lights.
This was an incredible thing to see - I haven’t done an intentional all-nighter in a very long time, and this has reminded me why I usually push through for an extra one or two hours each day when I am on a deadline rather than waiting until the last minute…. 🎉 And also, my brain works very similarly to yours! 😅
Just finished Garth Nix's The Sinister Booksellers of Bath. Magic, 80s punk aesthetic, and gender fluid fashion. Binged in 2 days the first 2 books. And now sad because book 3 isn't out yet
Oh yeah. Caffeine doesn’t wake me up and benedryl and other “may cause drowsiness” medications don’t affect my sleepiness level at all as opposed to my grandmother who would zonk out for 8 hours after taking ~12.5mg. I can take 100mg and nada.
I stayed up late once to sew something for school. It was so awful, I forgot how to do a thing as it needed doing and slept four hours before begrudgingly getting up and going to school.
I also do the sleep deprived rambling, as well as the sleep deprived state where everything is hilarious and you just can't stop giggling. I try to keep a regular sleep schedule, but sometimes the ADHD hyperfocus just sets in and suddenly it's 7 AM. 😅
Brandon Sanderson is Mormon. So there isnt much queer stuff in his books. His romance stuff isnt the main part of his books but can be good or awful depending on the characters or series. If you are curious I'd recommend starting with Warbreaker because it is only one book long so you arent committing to a 3 or 5 book long series. He has lots of world building and is known for his indepth magic systems too.
When it's not specifically for a 24h challenge but actually for max productivity, my experience is that going to sleep around 1:30/2am when the TirednessTM hits and setting an alarm for 4/5am works better than an actual full all nighter. Be careful to sleep for 3 hours or 1.5 hours though, if you sleep for 2 hours, you will regret it - something about sleep cycles
Try the original books of Mercedes Lackey's Valdemar series (Start with "Arrows of the Queen" or "Magic's Pawn"). There's a *lot* of books in trilogies from various viewpoints in the world. There's mindspeaking bonded horses and variable pairings.
Hard HARD same on the straight romances, I’ve made it a personal point to only read queer books and queer authors for the las two years and I have been enjoying reading SO MUCH MORE because of it. Queer genre fiction is legit where it’s at. Same goes for my partner who also completely agrees!
As someone who is borderline obsessed with (certain parts of) the Wheel of Time, I really cannot recommend you read any of it. The TV series has good bits and the average is going up, though
The plots that requires both people to be idiots in the exact same way and not have even one clarifying conversation are so annoying. One of the reasons I enjoy the sitcom Dharma and Greg is that everyone is well-meaning and communication difficulties happen because of assumptions that are deeply held and invisible.
You sure are unhinged. But I watched this starting to sew a new dress 36 hours before I am going to a larp. I might be just a bit unhinged too.. Where is the rest of larp RUclips? I want to find more of this.
God, this reminds me of one job I did for a client where I ended up only sleeping like a total of 1 hour in a 36-hour stint. When I handed it in I essentially told them "fuck you, reassess your priorities, and I will charge an extra 15% for the torture". Absolutely horrible, do not recommend, minus infinity/10. Edit: Did I say 36 hours? I meant almost three whole days. Like, somewhere between 2.5 and 3 days. Again, fuck 'em.
it always amazes me when people manage to do a 24-hour challenge, because i don't do well after a certain hour when i'm *not* trying to stay awake 😅 but it looks like you approached this in the most sensibly unhinged way! it's great that you got so much done, but yes, as Bernadette also learnt - handsewing is going to take the same amount of time (or longer) when you are deprived of sleep, regardless of it being a speed challenge 😂 (also, totally down for historically-inspired pokémon gym leaders!)

Sleep Deprivation always makes the best or the Worst Ideas...
Just when my motivation wanes, a video from Ash is always perfectly timed to get me sewing again
Love that you ramble as much as I do when I'm sleep deprived too.

Love the daylight planning. This should be good, and having realised I've missed that BB 24 video, I'll be looking for that after watching this one 😄
5am Ash’s book rambles are a vibe! I will take your recommendation in trade for suggesting Robin Hobb’s books if you’ve not read them already 😊
5AM Ash might think they are weird, but editing Ash cleverly kept it in!
Well done, and Lizard Leigh is an awesome yt'er, good shout out!
The second surcoat is absolutely stunning, love the velvet/spiderweb pattern combo!
The historical gym bosses idea is the coolest thing ever (and I would DIE if you ever did something with Lizard)
I read this title, my husband laughed his arse off. Said he'd enjoy watching this. I think he assumes it will be unhinged 😂😂
When I worked overnights, I ALWAYS took a clean pair of socks to change into at 'lunch'. It made such a difference!
When I worked music festivals as a vendor, I would bring an entire new outfit including shoes to change into at lunch. It felt like a whole new day mentally and helped prevent post lunch sleepy 💯

Brandon sanderson does have a series with a female main character. Mistborn, they're pretty good
OMG, a showdown and a ridiculous challenge 🎉
Nothing encourages me to get my butt into bed more than watching someone stay up for 24 hours. 😆
10/10 would support much much more rambling about fantasy books at 5am, please and thank you
I'm obsessed with the Locked Tomb series, anybody else?
Came to the comments to recommend that myself!

Yay, Creepy Pasta! 😂 I enjoy these snippets of life's incidentals sprinkled about the crafting process.
Watching your video as I am about to do a little bit of sewing before midnight. Is it a good idea probably no. Is it a bad habit? Most certainly.

12:13 love the fabric of that first surcoat!

You washing out that fleece in the tub is almost an exact recreation of when I cleaned hair out of the drain the other day.
Also, this was super delightful. I've done many theater shows where I'm set dressing, and I've pulled an all nighter in a haunted theater (the ghost of my favorite one is friendly, but annoying) painting faux woodgrain or wallpaper or something.

I may have to do this....and film it. Will let you know, Ash.

Oh my! Would never do that. I value my sleep too much. Also, I get really sarcastic when sleep deprived.
Just finished Garth Nix's The Sinister Booksellers of Bath. Magic, 80s punk aesthetic, and gender fluid fashion. Binged in 2 days the first 2 books. And now sad because book 3 isn't out yet

I’m rereading the Liaden Universe®️ series as I do whenever a new book comes out. Hard sf romance. With you on the scented candles!!

fun video , i bet the next nights sleep was super sweet :D
#teamBulbasaur
Idk how a 50mm lens would be for filming, but it's wonderful for stills. I adore mine.
This video is inspiring me to go to bed early lmao
woahhhh i'm truly early. I immediately knew what video this was referencing lol. I'm sensing impending chaos.

05:00 Oh yeah. I have ADHD. Caffeine makes me sleep like nobody's business. It's considered "normal ADHD reaction" apparently.
How does your clothes airer stay up? I can't see the stick bit that goes down... It looks like it might be a hover clothes airer...
attached to the wall!
