I think Shannon Makes might be a good fit for you both. Her "day job" is a circus performer, her yt channel is sewing history bounding clothes, embroidery, knitting, dumpster diving for crafting supplies, building furniture, and playing with her corgi. Her channel is almost 70k, but I can't see her being snooty to you, she just isn't like that. Check her channel out. Oh, she lives in Canada, but travels all over the world for her job. And, the cathedral dress should be hanging in an art museum, it is stunning. Have a wonderful week.

    • @stevezytveld6585

Agreed. On both counts. You could do an installation piece in an artist-run gallery with the cathedral dress as the centerpoint - fiber arts count as official art. You just need a good artist statement...

Ditto on Shannon - she’s fun and is hugely into thrifting/recycling. Also Katie Makes (I think that’s her channel title - I’ll comment again if I’m wrong).

Katie Makes Stuff is the correct title for the other channel. Both are interesting and I bet they at least know what a LARP is. :)

@@coalsparks There's also another two Canadians. Stringchronicity (search the YT with "String chronicity" & add 'tatting' or 'plus size corset' if the search is being poopie) and LizScapism. They both range in the historic to vintage dress making and associated research.
If you want to do a deep dive into pattern history there's Stephanie Canada in Florida. Do a talking-head video about vintage patterns and you'll get all of Cos Tube and the Vintage Humans humming in happiness...
Find an excuse to hit up the Welsh Viking. He does reenactments in his spare time. He's done colabs with LizScapism in the past.
There's also Marlinasewing. Right now she's making a vintage basic b capsule wardrobe. She's much fun.

I'd second the Shannon Makes suggestion, but maybe also the Closest Historian. Her stuff is more fashion vintage but when she does costumes, oh man. I think you two would have fun swapping ideas. Plus she is all about all the crafts.

Mostly came to this channel for costuming (it's the perfect for bingeing during crochet sessions!) but stayed for the LARP. I never would've been emotionally able to try LARP without youtube content making the scene more accessible (and a lot less scary), so I'm SUPER HAPPY you want to put more of it into the world - it's so important for potential players to see

Oh my gosh, yes, to the suggestion of Shannon Makes. I also want to suggest Charlie from The Stitchery. The algorithm suggested your channel after I watched her explorations into split side skirts, so there’s some similarities in style. She also does “just because” costumes, extravagant dresses, just everyday attire, but also has videos on embroidery, a diy moss rug, and just fun playing with fabric, in general.
I love you phrased it as “you’re my people”; yes, yes I think I am. I love watching people try a new to them craft, and their excitement, frustration, etc. It’s not about me learning how to do it, but experiencing something from someone else’s view, & learning about that person (yay! Parasocial relationships!). I’m absolutely not a LARPer (no, you’re not going to make me one. It involves people, & I’m not a fan) but seeing your process of character development & creating the wardrobe & accessories, is really interesting.
How was the progress on my January list of unfinished projects? Dreadful. I developed a new RSI & have had to completely rest my left arm, leaving me bored & frustrated. I want to dooooo thiiiiiiingsssssss!

But I tidied up and organized my Giant Pile, completed my two top priority makes that were gifts for other people, and i also completed a refashion that's been sitting on the back of my sewing machine chair for months! It’s August, I’m working on UFO’s and organizing my paper patterns. The Pile is not as huge as it once was… the Victorian Crazy Quilt pillow or shawl sized project, really needs to start, I have amassed two totes of velvets and brights. However it comes after the dragon wing capelet on its third year in the pile… love all the sewing adjacent crafts! I used to LARP in a small way, I also used to do medieval re-enactment. It was a fearless time for me, so much learning, some successes some notable failures. Your channel and The Stitchery have got me excited about sewing again. Thanks for all that you do.

I completely finished one project which was replacing a zipper in a large bag. Hand sewn since using the machine would have been torture. The poor bag has been languishing since well before 2020.
Partial completion of a vest that now only needs buttons. Knitting from the start of the arm holes up in order to reduce by one size. Apparent my shape has changed again. Now I am three different sizes instead of two. I love and learn.
Partial completion of a twenty page stitched and applauded book. I only have about one hour's stitching to do in page twenty.

I arrived at that split skirt video and then watched the "under pockets" that really go with. I went to etsy and picked out fabric I want for making about 6 of them . . . but, I promised myself to get through the pile first. Technically, the pile only has an alteration hem on a tank top and a replacement elastic-back on a vintage pair of swim trunks (for someone dear to me). However, I have pyjamas that need lengthening now; another that requires a massive patch on an elbow and an apron that also needs patching on account of 6 holes that have developed in the last wash cycle. Oh, and then I promised myself that when this current pile is done that I would crochet that sweater---the one from last year.
I don't know if there is LARPing in my area. I like to wear things that are kind of like that just to go shopping (yes, I'm a weirdo). I like the way that you explain the steps of constructing a garment. I can't always figure out what a pattern is trying to say in written words. (I have an interesting pair of shorts that give proof of that.)
I have watched your videos since that split skirt day. I don't have oodles of time to just sit and watch so I pick my opportunities so that I can pay attention to you.

January is a sideways month. Always is. Happy to see it gone. I too am confused as to why Mx. Ash doesn't get more views, because they are highly deserved. Come on Algorithmic Gods (both the old and the AI), get on it...
I got almost nothing done. But I did give into temptation and brought home some lace bobbins from the ebay. Pillow is still incoming. I've also taken up my tatting shuttle. I accidently bought 80 weight tatting thread. Which, funnily enough, is a Machoistic weight of thread... need to find some smaller stuff. Because making lace with something that's the same size as a thick thread is for the birdies.

Trouser crisis solidarity! I really really need to make more too, I don't have many pairs and most of them are getting pretty worn. And I only have 2 black pairs, one with big holes and another that's linen and only fit for summer.
I didn't do great this month, I finished only one thing, so The Pile is now 23 instead of 24. But that one thing was a nightgown I'd only cut out 4 pieces of, so it was one of the least finished things in The Pile, and I made decent progress on a couple of other things.
I suppose I also darned a hole in a mitten. And turned a pair of old curtain pulls into a skipping rope on a day when I felt really restless and unfocused, so I could say it was 3 things if I really wanted to stretch it.
Mostly I've been really focused on the glove video I'm working on.
I hope you get a lot of stash fabric used up this year! And I hope I do too. I have so so much fabric that I need to turn into everyday wardrobe items... So many pieces with very specific plans, just like your stash, I just need to DO it!
I was, at least, successful in not cutting out a single new project this entire month! (And this month I finally got my huge 8 foot long cutting table moved to my new place, after over a decade of it being trapped in my parents basement, so please admire my restraint.)

I got zero projects done this month. But I did give into impulse and picked up some lace bobbins. And I've picked up my tatting shuttle again. If I'm gonna make my own clothing then it's going to have nicer lace than I can afford to buy. At least, this is my justification to myself.
Go at the pace that works best for you. The Algorithmic Gods (both the old and the AI) can (and will) be trained - it's just weaponized math... we just have to hive mind the thing.

By-the-by - one of the algorithmic tricks is for you to like and heart the comments. Hive mind hack I've picked up from some other content creators...

I do support you reaching out to Shannon! Idk how you two would work together as makers, but, I can see your styles connecting.
You & Martina, from Nerdforge, may be able sort of trade items or ideas. After all, xie/she? can sew, and there's stuff you put together. It's the theory that when two artists talk, the options for each one's art expand by the out-of-the-box ideas from a creator who works in another medium.
Say, what about Mechanical Friend? That creator does costuming sometimes, and presents as accepting, supportive, creative, focused, imaginative...
I keep thinking if Jimmy from Norse Viking (historical recreation, which is not exactly larping, but, shares components)
And Moonlight Cottage, who seems to enjoy cosplay (costuming), and roleplay (a sort of larp). I mean, for ideas and the possibility to learn/teach/share, there's potential. You could "visit" eachother's channels, and do a sort of collaborative character creation/clothing/outfittplan a roleplay & each show it in your own way on your own channel.
Maybe invite Hazriel Costumes & Annabelle & Ben's antics to that one?

Please turn me into a LARPer! LOLOL. I actually found you for the LARP content, but stayed in part for the sewing.

unfortunately The PileTM for me has gotten larger with little progress on all the old stuff. However I do now know how to knit and i've made myself some jank slippers, so thats a success I will be counting

My plan is to finish stuff, I've gotten some organizing done, started on some, but the pile is a few years long. I keep sneaking in a project here and there. I love your content, your style and it's just fun.

I finished nothing and instead started a new project because my kid needs a coat that is not a cheap mass-produced acrylic sweater. Got a good deal on some polartec fleece remnants and figured "hey, if I hand sew this and finish the seams properly it'll last longer and I can feel less guilty about sewing a thing out of plastic!" Which was a great idea until I got The Plague and now I have no energy to do anything except leave this little saucer of milk out for the fairies of Alg o'rythm.

I started january with two things on the pile, and I made zero progress on either of them, and in fact added a third in progress thing to the pile (oops). in my defense, I messed up one of my projects in like august and I finally figured out what I’ve done wrong, but it means ripping out all of the stitching and starting over. and one of the other projects is so boring that I can only do about 10 minutes at a time

I failed miserably. Zero fixed sleeves. Have cast on beanie for a friend who is visiting in March. Please wish me luck, I am not a fast knitter.

You dont need to try to turn me into a LARPer, lol, I like the idea of it anyways. I also really enjoy your personality so I cant wait to see more of what you're up to!
Edit : I'm not a content creator, but would you consider making a discord to have people be able to talk with you and each other about the different crafty shenanigans? (I live on discord lol)
