Top 5 transport ship civs plz.
I didn't know I needed this list
That'll be great for a 1st april episode
Finally, a list where the saracens can be number 1
Does persian get a bonus since 1 elephant takes the same amount of space as 1 militia?
1. Saracens
2. Saracens
3. Saracens
4. Saracens
5. Saracens

Asking the important questions
De cav archer list plz
Baobab trees
Top 5 bes naval civs please
Keep up with this lists, I'm loving them!
How would you rank them
saracens :0
In no particular order:
-Spanish
-Portuguese
-Vikings
-Sarracens
-Italians
@@yizhenji5564 true, but actually Spanish are only great when they reach imp and are able to unleash those cannon galeons. Until then, even the aztecs can 1vs1 them on water, so the comparision is not that straight-forward. There must be a top 5 for rush and another top 5 for late game.
Also, personally I'd add Koreans just because I love those turtle ships
Turks!
Update required.....Keeping the cumans and tartars in context
Also, I would appreciate adding in calmels archers with some scenario editor magic to remove their cavalry archer bonus for fair comparison?
And Bohemians. Their HCA in imp is very underrated.
😂@@SethBennion
Spirit you will also have to consider the fact that while hit and run, the regular cav archers take some time to reload and fire but the Mangudai fire instantly so they are better against troops with lesser range and if micro ed well can be useful against other cav archers.
in the new expansions they changed it where Mangudai don't fire instantly anymore, so this doesnt apply
@@zzDashyx they still being the best cav archer in the game, if you mass them you are unstoppable
Macroed mangudai are really really hard to get around. Camel archers are maybe the only unit that can stand up to them head on, maybe skirmishers but mangudai can just out run them.
@@zzDashyx Really? Why was it changed?
@@f.c.laukhard3623 They changed it because it was to strong, still the delay is 5 instead of the 10 of cav achers and thats still a big big big big big difference. A frame delay off 10 = cav archers and 5 are arbelest and if you play age you know how much that mathers.
This test doesn't account for the biggest advantage of the Magundai: They fire instantly unlike the Cavalry archer line making them much better at Hit and Run and way easier to micro.
Top 5 Defensive civs plz!
@Kritzcake what about Byzantine? :)
@@akmalfakhruddin7285 Byzantines are actually kind of middle road as far as defensive civs go, mainly due to their jack of all trades, master of none tech tree. Spirit actually mentioned that in his civ overview, I believe.
@@kronosomni2805 I like to see the byzantines as a counter-attack civilization, more than a defensive one. They got the elemental responses to almost any strategy and a significant discount in the more heavy counter-units.
1.Koreans (Turtle CIv)
2.Byzantines
3.Incas
4.Teutons (no bracer no deal)
@@Bestsuk You forgot the Turks, with their canon towers and Janissaries.
Magyars are number one yesssss 😍
Love recurve bow
yup Magyars definitely the best haahhah.. I kno I'm not a decent player, but with cheap but strong light cavalry who only cost food, cavalry archers, and trash infantry I could spam them all. So fun to see my magyars hussar and common hussar everywhere on the map
It's interesting how Magyars went from being off the list in Castle Age to being #1 in Imperial age.
That's the main reason I think most pros make a mistake when they go straight into CA as soon as they hit Castle Age with Magyars. Their bonuses favour cavalry in Castle Age not Cavalry Archers.
Ideally they should go scouts in Feudal, knights in Castle and then HCA + Mag Husz in Imperial Age. That way they properly utilize all of the Magyars' strengths, none of which are economy based so it's important to go with the right units.
@@TheChimples you can go foot archers too since they got LOS bonus which is great for hunting vils. Plus it won't be expected. If enemy doesn't properly scout your base they might assume you're doing scout rush and start pumping out spearmen putting you at a great advantage.
What if Magyars got +1 CA range in castle age as a civ bonus and then Recurve bow would only add 1 attack in imp but be a bit cheaper. Thoughts? Would it be op? Currently I feel the Magyar CA switch is a bit clunky and not much benefit to going CA in castle age as Magyars. If anything it's a drawback
But what about Magyar arbalests?
Everything you said about the Portuguese Cavalry Archers is historically correct. During the age of reconquest (1147-1320) Portuguese Kings and Lords would have a lot of running Skirmishes along the borders against the Berber Moors, in these situations Cavalry Archers are worth their weight in gold. Later Military doctrine was focused towards the sea as we started exploring the African Coast and tried to find a naval route to India. With that Horse archers feel by the wayside.
A really nice touch by the devs here.
Saracen really loves shoot arrows to buildings, are they?
I think a playground bully told them they couldn't hit the broad side of a barn.
mostly farms and walls .. they destroy in seconds
Sorry, my bad. May the saracen archers destroy my house
I wonder what historical reference is it.
@@T2266 An abandoned house ? NO ! A saracen ambush!
It's a travesty that the Mongols, who were infamous in their place in history for having the best cavalry archers ever, lose to so many civs in AoE2.
Yet they were trolled by cav archers in the Battle of Ain Jalut
by the Saracens.
For me they must have the last archers armor but not the infantry one. As the Persians. They are a bow civilization, a horse archer civilization and they don't even have fully upgraded horse archer.
@@seleukosnikator7347 Mangudai are already op dude why would you do this.
@@sugoi9680 To be historicly accurate.
Ditto with the Huns
Your music management is amazing! Loving the musicalization of the video.
I've always loved massing cav archers when I'm playing Magyars. So glad to see them get some recognition.
I have been absolutely binging your videos recently. So happy to catch one live.
Hey SotL - I just wanted to say thanks for the vids - you are very genuine and hope all the best for you and the channel for the future!!
When a so called cavalry archer civilization is beaten by cavalry civilization and gunpowder civilization...
Bring back the old huns...
Adi Yusuf Huns need bigger discount and the last cav armor tech
both magyars and turks were steppe nomads in the past before settling in pannonia/asia minor
gerizekali sözde cavalry archer sivilizasyonu dediğin millet biziz zaten. Turkler ve Hunlar aynı soydan
Turks started out as cavalry horse archers historically. That’s how they initially won their empire.
Fun fact= Turks lost most of their wars when they abondon their asiatic horse archer/light cavalry battle traditions and rely on infantry and disloyal janissaries.
Great video, I really like your approach to this question by creating two separate lists for Castle and Imperial Age. If you chose to only show a "whole" ranking, Portuguese would have fallen out, so props for going the extra mile.
Also like that you assigned each Civ a fixed color for the rankings.
Please do an update on this, I’m especially curious where cumans and berbers would fit into this
tatars for number 1
@@davidtaylor4717 Love the Tatars!
All of your videos are super high quality and very informative, I feel like I have learned A LOT about aoe2 from them, and I thank you for that.
I take mangudai over any cav archer in late imp. Their bonus vs siege denies counters like rams and onagers and helps a lot in sniping trebs. they're easier to micro, too. Early imp, I agree Magyars cav arch have the edge
Always love your videos spirit. Feel like lately you're analysis accounts for real competitive game play situations better than it ever has. This was perhaps a weakness in the past where the theory would not match up with practice. Loved another great video!
I love watching these vids ! Just recently got Aoe2 myself and I am planning on playing this game more competitively 🤣
Keep on doing them man. Been watching vids about AOE2 since 2014 already xD
I love the music on your videos, is such a Brooklyn 99 vibe!
Totally loved it! Even in post Imperial with the other Magyar tech, you can go full CA and Huszar (only food), saving all all the gold for the CA. You only waste food and save the gold.
I did not know that before, but I waited a long time for a video like this!
Thanks for this series of videos. Just getting back into AOE and relearning everything. It is amazing how strategies have developed around how to play this amazing game.
In my day, it was get some food wood gold stone, build some guys and have at it! All the stuff you have to _know_ now just to play is a little intimidating.
Ty for the video sotl! A few comments though:
With CA being expensive to create and upgrade, requiring both both cavalry and archer upgrades, I think that economy should play a larger role in the castle age analysis. Huns have a good eco bonus and a discount, and they can thus produce more CA than portuguese who only have a discount.
Mangudai should be higher on the list imo, as their low frame delay and siege armour dmg bonus make them super good in imp when heavy siege starts Rolling out and survivability (kiteability for mangudai) means that more gold is conserved and map pressure maintained. They also move 3.6% faster than HCA.
I’m curious about why this wasn’t given more consideration as you know all these facts, but only mentioned some of them briefly.
Finally uploads...It was worth the waiting!
Love to see my magyarbois being #1, they are a really beginner friendly cavalry archer civ with the Huszar and extra range, as +1 on range means your cav archer can attack pikes from much further away to cover your light cavalry while the Huszars have surprisingly high melee damage output and can easily deal with skirmishers and siege with the bonus damage while the food only cost of them lets you use them as trash units to cover your archers. They also play fairly well when you are more experienced and can work just fine with aggressive tactics like a feudal scout rush, and while they dont get any huge power spike at the castle age, unupgraded Huszars can deal with siege and archers alright, add some transitional pikes so you dont get overpowered by knights and you can stay safe and hit your imperial age powerspike.
Go Mags!
The last time I played Age of Empires 2 was in December, but I watch your videos nonetheless. Your one of my favorite RUclipsrs!
Thank you Boss waited so long for this ❤️❤️❤️
I wish we would see more of this unit, it has the most pleasing sound when controlling them.
I also wish you will do an overview on Archery Range units, would be really helpful!
I like the Magyar pick personally. I picked them up recently and find the transition from castle to imperial with cav archer hussar very strong. Especially when you eliminate the gold cost on your unique unit making it very easy to mass both. Definitely my favorite civ to play at the moment
One more thing that holds the Vietnamese back is their lack of Husbandry. That slows down their Cavalry Archers, making them easier to catch and less able to chase stuff down. Yes, you have to get that from the Stable, but it still counts.
Oh, and what about the Arambai? Does that not count?
No because arambai does meelee damage instead of pierce
I can't wait for Top 5 Economy Civs. I kind of need that list to keep up with my father in our match-ups.
Your music carry your voice soo well.
Thanks for all those data !
Fun fact: The unique tech "sipahi" for turks was added for balance reasons so their cav archers could deal with elite mangudai better, because they had literally no answer to them; no elite skirms, onagers or arbalest.
Camels
@@rc4a0frios have literally no pierce armor tho ...
@@roflswamp6 they have the same pierce armor as the mangudai, plus they have 60 more hp. Camels are a great unit against cavalry archers.
i was waiting for it!
I just love your channel man ! Keep it up !
It is the RETURN OF THE SPIRIT OF THE LAW!!! Awesome nice dude with interesting analysis and fun games!
Thanks for the great list Spirit! I would like to stress though that by only testing cavalry archers vs cavalry archers, the effect of armour is overmagnified, as armour is essential to ranged units when fighting other ranged units, versus melee units the effect of armour is much smaller. Another thing to consider is reload time, which is very important with hit and run, even in the imperial age.
Thats why I still think that the Mangudai could be higher, what do you think? :)
Great video as always Spirit! I'm generally satisfied with how you rationalize your rankings, but here the flipping of Magyars above the Turks felt less well argued than what I'm used to from your other videos.
If you were going to give so much importance to range at the end, you should've added that into your tests somehow. Otherwise don't make your biggest decision based on it.
For example. You didn't mention H. Cav. Archer + Recurve Bow is 1500 food and 900 gold vs 1100 food + 675 gold for the elite Mangudai, or 1250 food + 650 gold for Turkish tanks. Or that if all you want is range, the Magyars also have arbalests to do that for less money.
cubankhan
But you loose mobility with foot archers.
yes my beloved Magyars! tho imo opinion, Mangudai are the best raiding cav arhers, firing instantly on command with no delay makes them really useful against villagers and in hit-and-run situation against many units... I also think that when you use the "same ressources" comparison, you should also include the price of unique tech because 20 fully upgraded Turk cav archers is more expensive than 20 post-imp Mongol cav archers (missing some techs and the necessity of a castle, tho i understand that these don't cost the same ressources (food and stone) than the unit itself but you still need some more villagers in food and stone to afford the techs and castle)
Whenever the "winner" song starts I get weirdly pump. How is it called?
Niklas Ahlström - Midnight Hotel
@@fatihaltun11 tnx!
@@fatihaltun11 thanks!
Mongols still my fave for how the Mangudai control, I feel like that should have been another bonus towards them
Hey Spirit, you have great videos. I wanted to ask if you’ve ever considered a top 5 (or top five favorite) unit combos?
Some of my favorite parts of your civ overviews are when you explained which units synergize well in the various Civs. Unfortunately not all the overviews have this in the video.
Two that I remember are the Indians with Imperial camels and then you said add in some Hand Cannoneers... the other was the Spanish when you said most people like to do some conquistadors and add in some Paladins... I dunno I have watched every civ maybe 3 times and those stand out as the excellent bits.
Hey Spirit, how about making videos about the civilizations' unit dialogues?
A bit of researching what the villagers and soldiers say when you select/command them, I know there is already plenty of info about that on the wikia but it's always good to have you giving your point of view on the topic. Nice videos dude, greetings from Mexico!
Jibeo
Can you do a top 5 Best of your opinion Civs? Btw love ur vids keep the good stuff up bro!
A new video! Thanks a lor for a great content :)
I am eagerly waiting for your Top naval civilisations list😀. Please post the video soon
I always like seeing the top 5 civs in a list being those most famous for that kind of unit. AoE isn't always the most realistic game, but the balancing and bonuses do sometimes bring a civ a realistically unique touch.
Definitely one of the best candidate for an update video.
SoooooOOOoo many new civs and even more tweaks for existing ones.
Also, no TARKANS !?!? :(
Would love to see an updated review including Arambai and Kipchaks. Also, when are you doing the Cumans civ overview? :):)
Hi @Spirit Of The Law. Is there any chance that you will do a 'keep video' in the near future?
It won't be easy to make such an arrow tower overview - but having some comparisons could be interesting for single player and multiplayer AOE fans. I can think of an overview of different stats of ungarrisoned and garrisoned towers. Or just a summary of the differences in attack and defence between Yasama tower (Japanese), Great Wall tower (Chinese), Yeomen tower (Britons), Stronghold tower (Celts), Crenellations tower (Teutons), longer range keeps (Koreans).
Finally :3 The Top 5 Cavalry Archers Civs
You should review aoe definitive edition civs due to the lack of videos about it and your videos are very aplicable for how to play (my gameplay improved alot thanks to you)
Nice work with the colors
Just came off your top 5 cav civs.
My boys the Magyars REPRESENT!
We need a DE update ! Tatars and Cumans are very strong cav archers civ ! Please also consider Berbers, maybe by changing the way you test for the strongest unit (for example, trying to show the fastest to kill a certain amount of villagers or/and knights). It would be also nice to consider the more deeply the cav archer + light cav combo (maybe steppe Lancer+kipchak for Cumans given their cost), especially in imp.
and now Japanese CA are beasts! with them surely new vid could come
There is a mistake in 13:43 Regular CA's have 11 attack (not 12) and Magyar CA's have 12 attack (not 13)
Would be interesting to see how unique cavalry archers come into play. The Berber Camel Archer and Genitours are very powerful. Kasbah is also nice for producing Camel Archers quickly.
nice video. one thing the tests mostly focus on cav archer group vs cav archer group duel. probably would be better to show how they fair against mobile melee (knights etc), or xbow +mangonel combo
The other day i was calculating the costs of fully upgrading units, i was surpised that berserkers are more expensive to upgrade than cataphracts, could you make a video about the most expensive units to fully upgrade?
Dude, I really love the music do you use as background 😍
Can you tell us the songs names?
Probably It's his own music. But I like it too.
Thanks for the video! I've always thinking about how good is Viet's CA with archer HP boost.
would be really cool to see this video udapted with all the change of DE and the new cav archer civ. Also cav archer is the most interesting unit in the game it will be really interesting to see more comparaison and how good theyr are against other unit or if its a good choice for counter knight for exemple since we mostly see mass knight on ladder at castle age.
I’ve been playing the Magyars more and more this past month and that Recurve Bow combined with their unique Hussar is such and easy and mobile combo that I’m finding it hard to go back to playing other civs.
Now if only that one shotting wolves bonus was replaced with a legit eco bonus.
hey man, great vid as always! i wanted to know if the composer of the music that plays when you announced the no.1 as the Magyars is you or not. i liked that music a lot. take care!
Bildiğim kadarıyla onun değil. Şarkının adi midnight hotel gibi bişiydi. Bunu yaz çıkar.
Could you not do a test where you patrol groups of CA into each other to somewhat measure the effect of the extra range from recurve bow?
please do another 1v1 test Turks vs Magyars in Imp, but let them start out of range, so Magyars can use their strength :) You could just add the result in the description or something, I am surely not the only one wondering.
I tried its depeding on the formation you put them but usually turks are beating magyars if you dont mess the whole thing up and make them get stuck into eachother and cant fire
@@Torsengi Yes, when Magyars can use the landscape to their advantage, this might be useful and battlefields tend to get crowded sometimes with all the buildings and things standing in the way.
I would say Magyar still has the edge as in real games players will pull their army back and abuse the extra range.
@@slCBA i agree. Considering how useless horse archer in general as a tank, having more range instead of hp is ofc more useful
@@Torsengi
That 100HP I think does mean HCA can take a direct SO shot.
Hello I like your videos, can you make a playlist with all your videos about techs? I am always unsure what technologies i need. I saw you have already some technology videos, but no playlist.
Great video! A lot happens since them.
Watching those longbowmen get overwhelmed at the end was sooooooo. satisfying.
Next video on top 5 naval civilizations please. I mostly take a water map. If I would know the ranking it will definitely help me
Hey Spirit of the Law:
When you compare equal resources, do you include any extra units for civs who "can't" spend resources on the techs they are missing? It would make sense to take, say, the missing Heavy Cav upgrade cost and add it to the units, but I have a feeling that calculation would make it advantageous in testing to be missing an upgrade. What are your thoughts?
Hey Spirit, would love to see an update on this video including the newer civs like Tatars and Cumans.
Top 5 post-gold (trash) civilizations.
Funny that nobody mentioned the Berbers, they have an extra unique unit that does need neither castle nor gold.
@Cristopher Gaetan Dude, Aztec don't have Halberdier and it's mean their pike got 4+8 dmg and 55 HP, Burmese Halber got 60 HP and 6+7 dmg and it's a free upgrade, they got 1 more damage skmir but they don't have last archer armor
Byzantine got cheap trash but mind you their pike miss last upgrade +2 attack and they're not cheap as Goth (-35% infantry cost)
@@yonokhanman654 Genitour is good but not for the own good, Berber don't have parthian tactics
For me malay are the best Trash civ, since 2handed swordsmen counter all the other trash Units. And dont forget, that they also get trash defences: harbours
Yeah I feel like this is like Goths in the infantry list where everyone knows Malay are number one and it’s just 2-5 that are the question. Speaking of Goths, they have fully upgraded skirms, nearly upgraded Hussars, and cheap halbs that are produced super fast. They deserve a mention.
Dude.
Why wasn't Incas #1?
Technically, you could argue singers are cavalry archers.
@@theanarchonazbolinquisition yeah they pick up the mic and start singing some epic opera music

I could honestly be on the edge of my seat listening to SotL rank fish jumping animations
You should do a video explaining the "panic" machanic that gunpowerder units have against cavalry...
1) have a Turco-mongol background
2) be a former or whole-life steppern nomad
congratz! you have stronk cavalry archers!
hey hey.. love your vids... have you ever done a video on how many vils are needed to repair a castle, while it is being attacked? (e.g. 2 trebs shoot on castle, how many vlis needed for repair, assuming unlimited stone....)
Excellent Choice!
Great video! Would it be possible to do an update now that there are some new cavalary arcer civs in de?
Just imagine if mongols had that last armour upgrade
That wld be op. The game is fun bcoz of its balances
Why did you skip over the Arambai here btw? Aren't they classified as cav archers as well (despite their ranged melee attacks?)
Hi spirit. I think someone already asked you but, where's your intro's music from ? I would love to know. (Not appearing in this video tho).
Thx mate and keep up the good work. Your videos are GREAT ! Cheers
Never mind ... ruclips.net/video/Edyj-qxOaqc/видео.html
But still. Keep making great vids :)
- I would say the Franks CAs deserve a honorable mention in the Castle Age.
- The 20% Cav HP bonus applies to them and they sit at 60 HP, though they miss Thumb Ring.
- Forage bonus and free farm upgrades kinda makes them to reach Castle Age a bit faster.
The problem is that you're missing the Thumb Ring with Franks. The accuracy boost is vital for CAs and it is rather unadvisable to go for CAs if you're missing TR. I think SotL had a TR video so you can get more details from there.
Also sadly enough enough the 20% hp bonus doesn't really replace bloodlines and leaves you in a disadvantage :/
60 HP is still less than generic.
Not having thumb ring makes any resources spent on CA a waste, it's THE vital upgrade you need for them, even more important than bodkin arrow
Sound good, doesn't work
- thumbring is very important with CA civ (attack speed and accuracy)
- no bloodline mean they're the weakest CA
- Free farm only kick in when you reach next age (not apply for old farm) => no bonus in dark age, Forage just save 1 village for another job, not a long term bonus like another CA Civ
I was recently thinking about the Empire Earth games, even AOE III. Empire Earth games are similar to AOE series, but have more features and things you can do beyond what you can in AOE and having more options like new features, new civilisations that existed in the time AOE 2 is set in, updates and changes to various other features could really transform AOE 2 for the better and I was wondering if you could you make a video on what features/additions/changes/updates you would like to see to AOE 2 that don't yet exist?
You really should have looked at conquistadors in this. They fall into the exact same role as cavalry archers apart from the difference in how they fit into the resource economy.
Also, way back during the first golden age there was some thinking that mixed groups with similar range but different fire rates were more effective than homogeneous groups as they would overkill individual targets less frequently. Since one of the examples of this was Mangudai and Cavalry Archers it would have been nice if you'd looked at a mixed force at least for castle age where all the available upgrades apply to both and a player is unlikely to have enough castles to mass mangudai alone.
Extra hp is always handy because when raiding in late imperial team games and trying to get backline to raid trade u will passe some castle fire. Archers still take hits from a lot of units, so extra hp is handy. combined with a speedy unit it is a very good thing
Your content is excellent. Creative and fun enough, however continually data focused. The AOE community is enhanced because of your work.
...i dont even really play that game - but love watching the games: and for some reason all your analytics, too! go on! :)
Need a new list for this now!
Guess it's a good thing I generally use calvary archers as the Turks where they're partly protected by my main army's firepower and serve as faster/tankier archers for softening approaching threats, lol
Since your last vid, I have been trying to work onagers into my army more and think they may be a bit more of a team player in the newer HD version as I remember them wrecking my own units a lot easier back in the original game. Still takes some friendly fire here & there, but seems much more manageable than in the past.
Spirit I love your video's but I do want to ask if you test for late game what is the cav archers job?
It's to deal dps, not to tank not fight unites close to it but to deal the big damage. Normaly you have an army of halbs in front of it or something else to keep it alive. What do pro's/good people use to soak up damage: rams (look to fights with archers civs like mayans) who can counter that? Chu co nu's and mangudai. (also mangonels). Also if you have to run mangudai are better because they movie faster and can split faster from mangonels.
So if you take into account what they really need to do they rank:
Nr 1 for damage per second magyars second
Nr 1 for dealing with counters magyars again second because they can more easily pick of onagers and turk do have the advantage that they can take a hit more from onager (not siege onager ) but not with not direct hits the + 20 will also help.
Than we have mobilitiy and how strong they are when they get in to the rade and again mangudai are better here but if the enemy has castles to protect turks will hold longer with more pierce and hp.
I love saracen cavalry archers :) they should have gotten a mention in castle age, where the +4 (not 3) building bonus damage plays a much bigger role in the ability to quickly destroy early farms when the vills are garrisoned or otherwise not vulnerable.
It also annoys me that you ignore/don't consider their powerful market bonus when you do these top 5 lists. Extremely powerful and versatile for fast castle attacks.
Can you do more game commentaries? I really miss those :(
