That would have have to be the Saracens for Knights, I think? As I can't really see anyone who gets Cavalier getting a trash upgrade for it. Since going 'More Cavaliers' is often a better choice than going to Paladins in the first place. Saracens do get full Blacksmith Upgrades for Cavalry. They'd be kinda terrifying with Trash Knights. Alternatively, you could make that Trash Upgrade for one of the Messoamerican civs. 'Trash Xolotl Warrior from Barracks, uses Infantry Blacksmith (But not unique upgrades, Mayans) Upgrades'.
Ikiry0 - the break-even is 32 Cavs = Pal Upgrade. That is, if you're going to make 33 or more Cavs after the upgrade / when Pal becomes available, get Pal first/ASAP/instead.
I would say it's iffy for the same reason as byzantines. When you're at the pop cap, being able to spam halberdiers isn't going to achieve much. Plus they're missing the last armour techs on hussars and halbs. But still, I would think they'd be higher on the list than Byzantines - missing bloodlines & blast furnace is bad.
tbh goths are pretty powerful once at endgame, so spaming trash is not often seen since they either die before imp, or the flood destroys the enemy before the gold runs out since their units are so cheap.
The biggest thing about goths is that they can just plop down a single forward barracks after gaining some ground and that one barracks alone will be a force multiplier when pushing forward.
Goths dont do Trashfights... Once they reach critical mass they no longer play age. They play tower defense as the aggressor 😂 Probably thier weakness here is that they no longer micro, they just set the gathering point's of thier Barack's and spam huskarls and helbs in a good mix and just march them down...

As much as I'd like to admit I play 2 of those civs a lot just because of the trash unit options. I didn't know that Persians has gold-free archer tech, that's so awesome. Thanks for doing what you do SotL.
The Vietnamese getting access to gold from lumber I think alters the dynamic of how they're a trash unit civilisation now. I suspect with the extra imperial skirmisher damage and strength against both halberdiers and archers & of course having 2 legs up (extra pierce damage & pierce armour) against enemy skirmishers means that they can still usually get gold units for a while, have a skirmisher that deals well with 2/3 enemy trash units (even the scout line can crumble if they lack armour upgrades or getting all the way to hussars). Even in the old version I would have thought that the 1 extra damage on Imperial Skirmishers would be just that extra bit more since you could flood them out so reliably... an extra 1-2 attacks to kill meant that most would get off at least 2 or more javelins per fight too. But yes I think if they turned their +1 pierce armour into melee armour that'd make them truly a powerhouse in the late game as I genuinely despise that their unique unit is so anti-archer/-ranged too with all of the rest of their bonuses.
I wonder if it'd be a good idea or a bad idea to add the ability to designate specific units and buildings to be possible for allies to convert, ignoring Heresy if it has been researched. Maybe also set it up so that all remaining units and buildings receive this flag automatically if a player resigns. That could be interesting, it'd potentially add some strategy in "donating" buildings. The most obvious use would be for producing Xolotl Warriors without having to capture a stable that's incredibly likely to get blown up due to being in enemy territory, but I'm sure significantly better uses could be thought of by someone more familiar with things than me.
Malians: Halberdiers get +1 Pierce armor per age, starting in Feudal. Also Malians: Trade the 15 HP and cost of the Hussar upgrade for +3 attack. SotL: Honorable mention for Lithuanian, for having slightly faster, if weaker, foot trash.
Would you consider the sicilians a new to tier trash-civ? They lack Hussar and their Skirms miss the final armor and thumb ring. But their civ-bonus makes their units a lot more tanky against enemy skirms or halbs. They also have long lasting farms, which can save a lot of wood in the long run (even though that might cancel out with missing the last wood upgrade).
If this was made now, I think Burgundians would be an honorable mention or even number 5. Sure, Flemish Revolution counts gold, but Flemish Miltia counter all Trash units and if you time it just right, you can get over 100 units at once and swarm the enemy. With the Burgundian team bonus and Vineyards you can keep throwing those poinu boys and girls at their army.

The Malay militia line upgrade costs a lot to get though compared to genitaur upgrades. You also forgot to mention that regular militia line cost 45 food and 20 gold with upgrade, not 60 food and 20 gold. The militia line upgrade is not nearly as good as it used to be due to everyone else's bonus, and now cost 65 food instead of 60 food. Personally I think genituars are a significantly better trash troop than every other mentioned, as since they now do plus 2 vs halberdiers, all long as you hit and run genitaurs can only really die by defenses, siege that isn't all that available late game, and cavalry, something that can be dealt with by their already cheap camels that regenerate, and pikemen with full blacksmith upgrade. Genitaurs might be the greatest counter to the Turkish might. I've held back pro players just spamming them out with pikemen.

Larger pop limit for military OR more of the army made up of non-trash paid for by selling resources (depending on the situation) OR more production buildings to speed up replacements. As usual with the Byzantines, it's all about knowing how best to counterplay using their flexibility. On that note halbs+hand cannons+hussars+a small group of paladins/cataphracts can make for a powerful late game army IF you can keep the cannons alive and use you heavy cav for very quick tactical strikes before running them back to the Byzantine monks with their healing bonus (which can help keep your cannons alive too). That's situational, of course, and takes some skill, but it can be very powerful.

As most of your videos already taught me there is much I don't know about the game yet even if I've played it for over a decade now and Regicide is definitely something I would love to uncover more.
As a kid back in age of conquerors, I discovered the regicide game mode and wouldn't play a standard game for like a decade lol. Would highly recommend it

I wish they added regicide to the matchmaker. It's my favorite game mode. And it also helps the game go faster because you're only trying to kill a king, not every villager. If the opponent is hiding you can use Treason to find them
I personally like goths, being able to outproduce your enemy and just keep pushing your barracks line forward. Also I think civs that really on their scout line in a trash war is at a disadvantage given the amount of Halberdiers on the field
Did I miss something? Or why is the intro gone? To my knowledge, the intro is written by Spirit himself...right? so no reason such as BScopyright or anything
Aztec with Vietnamese ally is pretty amazing as well. Imp Skirms with +1 Atk and 9 Range. Pikes with +4 Atk. Production speed bonus. Your skirms can take down any other skirms or Halbs and the Pikes are sufficiently effective to ward off any cavalry.
Lol bet this is jks. Turks have only one of the three basic unit, making them one of the worse trash unit civilisation, which is what this top list is for.
@@4xelchess905 Well, upgrades are one point, but that just sets them equal to every other normal civ. In fights they will still lose to every civ mentioned.
yes, but persians best trash unit still cost woods. In this case woods still more expensive comodities than the foods. Because we can get 550 foods from farm and only cost 60 woods. in this points Berber still better because the Hussar only cost 64 food, and it is fully upgraded hussar. If your money only remain 1000 woods, you will have more squads if you are Berber rather than if youre Persians, because you can get the capital gain from converting woods to foods by farm. Also in my opinion malay two handed swordsman still weaker than berber's hussar, and all sea-benefits I didnt put it in mind since if we fight in land area we gonna lost that benefit.
aztecs should have been an honorable mention, or even in the top 5, even though they have no cav, but halberds and skirmisher are very strong with aztecs....
I suppose Aztecs are an honorable mention too, atlatl skirms would do pretty well and despite not having halbs, garland wars helps out in pikes vs halbs fights and surely pikes wouldn't fare worse vs hussars. They're basically missing 1/3 dimensions that's the trash cav. But we need those mainly vs skirms which Aztec atlatl skirms might take care of in a slow fashion. Byzantine monk healing speed bonus should also be considered. Check out Hera (Byz) vs BacT (Mayans with 5 relics). Bact's mistakes aside, Hera did play the trash war well.
@@wolfieinu same i dont play competetively but have had success with aztecs like that as well, you mass halbys and skirmys and they are quality trash plus the farming bonus and carrying bonus helps with sustaining them economically and if you have slight gold they have good onagers and rams but yeah they suck against cavalry idk how to counter cav charges with em yet
Interesting. I would have swapped numbers 1 and 2. The fact that crossbow is countered by elite skirm is my reasoning here: in a trash war elite skirms are something you are certain to run into, meaning that crossbows are going to be hard countered. Two handed swordsmen on the other hand are a counter-trash unit without that obvious weakness. Add unlimited food allowing a flood of them to go on more or less indefinitely (along with light cav line, who make up for lack of upgrades with sheer expendability) and you're onto a winner.
I would have considered the Aztecs as an honorable mention over berbers with their pikes kinda standing in as a mainline infantry much like a Malay Twohander, but with extra skirmisher attack and range (even if missing the last archer armor) allowing you to flood the field with pikes and skirmishers as an offensive push. The downside is that you need to be pushing offensively, so you're being pressured to incorporate the odd Siege Onager and Trebuchet into the army to knock down towns. If you're being defensive, this strategy has a tendency to fail, but at this point if you're not flooding the field, you would still lose with gold units/gold income.
Their skirms don't have thumb ring, so they'll also miss about 10% of their shots in general (but rates varies on range, on short range even arambai have decent accuracy), so the extra ranges goes a bit to waste
Byzantines are #1 and you even said why "population efficency is often the number one concern". Combined with "they get 33% more units". Which means they can have 33% less villagers and afford the same army as the enemy, how do you beat someone who has a 33% more units than you do when all you got are super expensive crossbows
I would bump Malay up to number one, simply because the 2h swordsman is not countered directly by any of the generic trash units, while Persian trashbows are very hard countered by skirms, especially considering the lack of arbalest and bracer.
1:49 that woman's contribution to history is dying while continuing to chop wood during a massive invasion. She walks towards the attackers too, bravest villager I've seen for some time.
"And in the super late game when all players have reached about 200 units..." I dont think i have ever had a game where i reached more than 100 units, what am i doing wrong
Persains should lose Thumb ring with their new Crossbow tech IMO. That civ is already over powered with the faster producing TCs and Docks starting in the Dark Age already.
I'd consider Aztecs too, since their 2 unic techs help Skirmishers (+1attack +1 range) and Pikeman (+4 attack, it doubles the base 4 attack, making it 33% above base Helbs, that they lack)... they lack Ring archer armor, but their skirms excel against archers, since the main problem with skirms is the low attack (2 for regular skirms, 3 for aztecs; 3vs4 for elite).
The whole concept of a top 5 trash unit civ is a bit weird, and I agree units like Kamandaran archers, Corvinian Huszars and Forced Levy Swordsmen are obviously the best units and make the best civs almost by default. I'd say the top civs in trash wars are quite different though. Trash wars are generally about having 1 strong gold unit and being able to protect it while pressuring your opponents' gold unit. That's why best compositions are the likes of Slavs with Druzhina halbs covering siege and siege killing the rest or Mongols with Hussars stomping skirms while Mangudai micro everything else (especially halbs that would kill the hussars and the value units like siege).
What about Aztecs? For me they are the N°1 trash unit civ (not counting in DE, as i dont play it). +4 attack on halbs and +1 dmg +1 range for skirms makes a huge difference. Lacking scouts is not that big of a deal, as you can raid and fight off enemy skirms with your own superior skirms.

As most of your videos already taught me there is much I don't know about the game yet even if I've played it for over a decade now and Regicide is definitely something I would love to uncover more.
regicide is a really fun game mode imo
As a kid back in age of conquerors, I discovered the regicide game mode and wouldn't play a standard game for like a decade lol. Would highly recommend it
@vzdorr b Onagers cut through trees so well lol
@@HeyImLucious Seriously I've made countless lan parties with my friends these last 12 years, all about regicide! Bonds were strengthned and friendhips were broken but it was so much fun and we won't stop now. Such a shame Definitive Ed. won't give you Elo for Regicide matches.
I wish they added regicide to the matchmaker. It's my favorite game mode. Let's you get your unique unit out faster, allows you to get the game started faster with more villagers, lets you delay houses for a little longer too.
*Plays 4 Free For All*
The other players are all Magyars, Malay, and Persians
Me playing as Huns: "Oh...Oh No...OH NOOOOOO"
"Mercenaries" was actually renamed to "Corvinian Army" as you can see at 4:19
Observation 100
Perhaps to not confuse people with “Cuman Mercenaries”
Sounds really badass
i just love ravens and animalistic-themed warriors so much
No Turks honorable mention.
My disappointment is immeasurable
I love how there’s a sheep just passing through at 9:34 minding its own business
Did I miss something? Or why is the intro gone?
To my knowledge, the intro is written by Spirit himself...right? so no reason such as BScopyright or anything
Amazed how you keep making quality content after so many years, keep it up love your vids
He is like a scholar of AoE!
*That intro has changed XD*
Spirit of the Law, please, the intro music. We require it.

Malay will still be my fav civ.
Just one thing :
UNLIMITED FOOD
If the map has water for that
You should check this game, if you have not seen it. Malay in lategame as we all wants to see them

Actually it is 80 food. It becomes 65 after supplies, but not because of Forced Levy.
yeah he should explain that
Aztec with Vietnamese ally is pretty amazing as well. Imp Skirms with +1 Atk and 9 Range. Pikes with +4 Atk. Production speed bonus. Your skirms can take down any other skirms or Halbs and the Pikes are sufficiently effective to ward off any cavalry.
I was honestly expecting Turks to take number one spot. What could go wrong? 🙄🤨🧐
There trash is probably the cheapest to upgrade, if that does not deserve at least an honorable mention, I don't know what does.
Lol bet this is jks. Turks have only one of the three basic unit, making them one of the worse trash unit civilisation, which is what this top list is for.
turks with genitours though
@@Bloodark124 Hussar, Spearman, Skirmisher, I don't know how you count, but I count 3
@@4xelchess905 Well, upgrades are one point, but that just sets them equal to every other normal civ. In fights they will still lose to every civ mentioned.
Generic crossbow man: "so, how much did they pay you for this job?"
Persian crossbow man: "they gave me some wood for the winter"
In Middle East, lol
You really missed Aztecs with stronger pikes and stronger Skirms
Aztec's are a solid choice too. Yeah they dont have horses but both unique techs affect trash units. Definitely worth trying
Plus if they get any relics their bonus would help them generate more gold, which would be very nice when you can't mine any more
@@slushyjones4939 Exactly! I didn't even mentioned the faster unit creation time!
@@slushyjones4939 If you manage to get some siege weapons or champions (which has +4 attack if you are aztec) it's really game over for them
@@furkansaryerli Jaguars can cut through enemy halberds like nothing, and atatl skirmishers will provide support
yes, but persians best trash unit still cost woods.
Dear SotL, I miss the intro song, please bring it back
Thanks
Is that Airalin you're having for profile picture? X3
This. I've had some success with Aztecs, though I only play LAN / among friends, not competitively.
Their skirms lack thumb ring and ring archer armor which is whack
I think number #1 is Turks
She sidestepped the first volley too, lol.
"And in the super late game when all players have reached about 200 units..."
I dont think i have ever had a game where i reached more than 100 units, what am i doing wrong
try multiplayer, its fun
the new intro feels good and bad at the same time...
Except that it isn't "new"

I like that the intro is shorter. But I'll miss the old one, it was iconic
do a video on best beginner civ
Persains should lose Thumb ring with their new Crossbow tech IMO. That civ is already over powered with the faster producing TCs and Docks starting in the Dark Age already.
Damn, im so proud lithuanians were added to the game. i always loved this game, now, even more
I thought Aztec might at least get an honourable mention. Great skirmishers and their UT, is very beneficial for their pikeman
Not really, less armor is disabling
Look! Is the old Intro!!!
According to your list I think I prefer number 2 over number 1. Two-handed Swordsman without costing gold is too great a benefit to ignore
Number 3: THEN THE WINGED HUSSARS ARRIVE.MP3
ruclips.net/video/75zmIj_4LFQ/видео.html
Intro: Spirit of the Eaw
I'd consider Aztecs too, since their 2 unic techs help Skirmishers (+1attack +1 range) and Pikeman (+4 attack, it doubles the base 4 attack, making it 33% above base Helbs, that they lack)... they lack Ring archer armor, but their skirms excel against archers, since the main problem with skirms is the low attack (2 for regular skirms, 3 for aztecs; 3vs4 for elite).
New intro :0
Honestly was expecting Aztecs to take #1, not gonna lie.
"Spirit Of The Thrash!" :p
1 view, 17 upvotes. thanks, youtube!
For the love of God bring back the intro music!
Everyone: why do i hear boss music?
Malay player getting trash Champions: _MENACING_
Byzantines will always be number 1 to me.
