Larger pop limit for military OR more of the army made up of non-trash paid for by selling resources (depending on the situation) OR more production buildings to speed up replacements. As usual with the Byzantines, it's all about knowing how best to counterplay using their flexibility. On that note halbs+hand cannons+hussars+a small group of paladins/cataphracts can make for a powerful late game army IF you can keep the cannons alive and use you heavy cav for very quick tactical strikes before running them back to the Byzantine monks with their healing bonus (which can help keep your cannons alive too). That's situational, of course, and takes some skill, but it can be very powerful.
@@RickyMuzakki let's look at another example of how a numeric advantage can overwhelm a stat advantage. ruclips.net/video/ocKZzY89BLQ/видео.html I don't need to explain how using the cheaper trash to field more non-trash units instead is useful, right?
That would have have to be the Saracens for Knights, I think? As I can't really see anyone who gets Cavalier getting a trash upgrade for it. Since going 'More Cavaliers' is often a better choice than going to Paladins in the first place. Saracens do get full Blacksmith Upgrades for Cavalry. They'd be kinda terrifying with Trash Knights. I personally like goths, being able to outproduce your enemy and just keep pushing your barracks line forward. Also I think civs that really on their scout line in a trash war is at a disadvantage given the amount of Halberdiers on the field
I would say it's iffy for the same reason as byzantines. When you're at the pop cap, being able to spam halberdiers isn't going to achieve much. Plus they're missing the last armour techs on hussars and halbs. But still, I would think they'd be higher on the list than Byzantines - missing bloodlines & blast furnace is bad.
tbh goths are pretty powerful once at endgame, so spaming trash is not often seen since they either die before imp, or the flood destroys the enemy before the gold runs out since their units are so cheap.
The biggest thing about goths is that they can just plop down a single forward barracks after gaining some ground and that one barracks alone will be a force multiplier when pushing forward.
Goths dont do Trashfights... Once they reach critical mass they no longer play age. They play tower defense as the aggressor 😂 Probably thier weakness here is that they no longer micro, they just set the gathering point's of thier Barack's and spam huskarls and helbs in a good mix and just march them down...

Interesting. I would have swapped numbers 1 and 2. The fact that crossbow is countered by elite skirm is my reasoning here: in a trash war elite skirms are something you are certain to run into, meaning that crossbows are going to be hard countered. Two handed swordsmen on the other hand are a counter-trash unit without that obvious weakness. Add unlimited food allowing a flood of them to go on more or less indefinitely (along with light cav line, who make up for lack of upgrades with sheer expendability) and you're onto a winner.
I would bump Malay up to number one, simply because the 2h swordsman is not countered directly by any of the generic trash units, while Persian trashbows are very hard countered by skirms, especially considering the lack of arbalest and bracer.
I suppose Aztecs are an honorable mention too, atlatl skirms would do pretty well and despite not having halbs, garland wars helps out in pikes vs halbs fights and surely pikes wouldn't fare worse vs hussars. They're basically missing 1/3 dimensions that's the trash cav. But we need those mainly vs skirms which Aztec atlatl skirms might take care of in a slow fashion. Byzantine monk healing speed bonus should also be considered. Check out Hera (Byz) vs BacT (Mayans with 5 relics). Bact's mistakes aside, Hera did play the trash war well.
@@wolfieinu same i dont play competetively but have had success with aztecs like that as well, you mass halbys and skirmys and they are quality trash plus the farming bonus and carrying bonus helps with sustaining them economically and if you have slight gold they have good onagers and rams but yeah they suck against cavalry idk how to counter cav charges with em yet
Thanks for this video @SpiritOfTheLaw!! Much awaited top 5. Nice perspective, definitely got some unique ideas for civs I hadnt thought about as good in trash. Really nice. Thanks!
yes, but persians best trash unit still cost woods. In this case woods still more expensive comodities than the foods. Because we can get 550 foods from farm and only cost 60 woods. in this points Berber still better because the Hussar only cost 64 food, and it is fully upgraded hussar. If your money only remain 1000 woods, you will have more squads if you are Berber rather than if youre Persians, because you can get the capital gain from converting woods to foods by farm. Also in my opinion malay two handed swordsman still weaker than berber's hussar, and all sea-benefits I didnt put it in mind since if we fight in land area we gonna lost that benefit.
I would have considered the Aztecs as an honorable mention over berbers with their pikes kinda standing in as a mainline infantry much like a Malay Twohander, but with extra skirmisher attack and range (even if missing the last archer armor) allowing you to flood the field with pikes and skirmishers as an offensive push. The downside is that you need to be pushing offensively, so you're being pressured to incorporate the odd Siege Onager and Trebuchet into the army to knock down towns. If you're being defensive, this strategy has a tendency to fail, but at this point if you're not flooding the field, you would still lose with gold units/gold income.
Their skirms don't have thumb ring, so they'll also miss about 10% of their shots in general (but rates varies on range, on short range even arambai have decent accuracy), so the extra ranges goes a bit to waste

One thing with the byz is you can have a smaller eco and therefore more units meaning you take more unit efficient trades than a 1v1 test would suggest (just like you mentioned in your lanchester's law video)
Just one thing with the spanish villagers. Sappers. Spanish villagers with sappers can be devastating against buildings. I used to play with the Spanish and use only villagers as siege and it worked. They were also a good meatshield. The only downside I encounter was the villager pathfindig and moving large groups of villagers.
I'm surprised Aztecs didn't even get mentioned. Yes they have no calv, but both their unique techs make their skirmishers and halbs noticeably more deadly
Whats great about Persians is that you can build expensive units like siege cavalry and war elephants while spamming out archers, the mitigated cost of them makes heavy investment comps much more manageable

Fun fact the Malay are the only civ that can infinitely spam units, so if you use every resource on the map you have infinite res
do a video on best beginner civ
A 10 minute video... my life is complete
Damn, im so proud lithuanians were added to the game. i always loved this game, now, even more
Womder of the introduction of the Winged Hussar would have any impact on this list?
Its so comforting to know that its not just me that still loves this game.
great video, great music! really love your videos man!
Hussars : *was the best cavalery of there time for more then 100 yers, and many times deafeted enemy who has insane number adventage*
Also hussars: *have been called trash units by age of empires 2 players*
*Angry husars noises*
@Hoàng Nguyên Ah yes, you mean the Wings of Liberty campaign? ʕ ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°ʔ
I just found out the elite Magyar Hussars are the predecessor to the famed Winged Hussars of Poland.
@Hoàng Nguyên It's called the Slavs.
The polish re-edition of Hussars, albeit the most famous, came in towards the very end of years bracket Aoe2 uses. Before they were more like more international mercenary light cavalry. Names are shared, but not much besides that.
Polish hussars were heavy cav. Hussars were light cav.
Like in polish husaria and huzarzy. Two different types of units.
I agree with your top pick. Them archers outta nowhere are perky.
What's that song that you always tune in when you declare a #1 civ? It's nice...
He listed it in a previous video; it's "Midnight Hotel, Indie Pop Version" by Epidemic Sound. But yeah, he should list his songs in every description cause his picks are good
@@bluequiltedness thanks a lot. I was asking because I thought that this may be something he composed himself as he did with the intro.
I was honestly expecting Turks to take number one spot. What could go wrong? 🙄🤨🧐
There trash is probably the cheapest to upgrade, if that does not deserve at least an honorable mention, I don't know what does.
Lol bet this is jks. Turks have only one of the three basic unit, making them one of the worse trash unit civilisation, which is what this top list is for.
turks with genitours though
@@Bloodark124 Hussar, Spearman, Skirmisher, I don't know how you count, but I count 3
@@4xelchess905 Well, upgrades are one point, but that just sets them equal to every other normal civ. In fights they will still lose to every civ mentioned.
8:30 Idk man... I mean, +1/+1 On halbadiers is quite some, but isn't it that mobility is usually quite an issue when it comes to halbs/skirms?
the new intro feels good and bad at the same time...
Except that it isn't "new"
I'll load up a second video, play the intro, then come back. I need that onager shot.
Look! Is the old Intro!!!
One thing with the byz is you can have a smaller eco and therefore more units meaning you take more unit efficient trades than a 1v1 test would suggest (just like you mentioned in your lanchester's law video)
The intro: "and now the conclusion"
The conclusion to what?
The conclusion to SotL love of Star Trek
Now introducing bohemians and the trash monks.
Intro: Spirit of the Eaw
Just one thing with the spanish villagers. Sappers. Spanish villagers with sappers can be devastating against buildings. I used to play with the Spanish and use only villagers as siege and it worked. They were also a good meatshield. The only downside I encounter was the villager pathfindig and moving large groups of villagers.
3:25 I think you meant "unique tech" not unit
No Turks honorable mention.
My disappointment is immeasurable
I'm surprised Aztecs didn't even get mentioned. Yes they have no calv, but both their unique techs make their skirmishers and halbs noticeably more deadly
Pikes*
@@light_david7 ah, a good point
#1: Danny DeVito
THE TRASHMAN!!!
gaming
@@jaredt5127 I JUMP INTO THE RING AND I THROW TRASH EVERYWHERE
Lemme get some TRAAASH to clog up this wound
You mean the Persians are the most like Penguin?
Whats great about Persians is that you can build expensive units like siege cavalry and war elephants while spamming out archers, the mitigated cost of them makes heavy investment comps much more manageable
Number 3: THEN THE WINGED HUSSARS ARRIVE.MP3
ruclips.net/video/75zmIj_4LFQ/видео.html
According to your list I think I prefer number 2 over number 1. Two-handed Swordsman without costing gold is too great a benefit to ignore
New intro :0
Hey Spirit..... 2:31, that miner chick at the bottom of the screen who is pacing back and forth uselessly..... Is it my imagination or is it that this type of thing happens 100x more often in DE than any other version of the game?
"Spirit Of The Thrash!" :p
0:30
Spirit of the Law: like in the 1v1 game
Me: if one vs many? That's another story?
For the love of God bring back the intro music!
Here's an idea - like your old video where you explained the real historical buildings behind the Wonders of each civilization, why not make a video explaining in a similar manner the civs' unique units? I personally think it would be interesting to watch. :)
1 view, 17 upvotes. thanks, youtube!
I was waiting for this for a long time.. thank you..
Honestly was expecting Aztecs to take #1, not gonna lie.
glad to see that the picture for the bodkin arrow is now a bodkin arrow
it used to be the exact opposite of what bodkin arrows are
also glad to see they gave the magyar huzsar wings
since that is what huszzszsars are all about visually
Thx for the video Spirit now i have my master plan whit Magyars Malay and Persians for late game trash battles
The new DE intro edit is gonna have a lot of hype to live up to. The classic intro has the balance of silly and epic moments and that watchability helped build the SoTL Empire!
I thought Aztec might at least get an honourable mention. Great skirmishers and their UT, is very beneficial for their pikeman
Not really, less armor is disabling
I have missed Aztecs and Burmese: First one has 12 attack pikemen, as well as 9 range 8 attack skirmishers (with vietnamese ally 9 attack), though as meso american they lack of cavalry.
For Burmese, they have 13 attack halbs and raiding hussars (+6 attack vs buildings), though their skirmishers are made of paper.
New Honorable Mention: Bohemian Trash Monks
Oh, the irony of Bulgarians missing thumb rings tech since the museums in Bulgaria are jam packed with them...
Aztecs! Gotta be honorable mention at least.their pikemen and skirms both improved by unique tech. Add extra gold from relics, the only infinite gold source in 1v1 allowing them to make a bit more siege (which they have excellent options of) they definitely outperform byz
TFW a channel has the best intro ever, but it doesn't even use it
Hey SotL! About the Spanish, if you are going to mention the no gold BS upgrades, you should also mention the extra gold from the trade on team games. The population efficiency is even higher!
