  • In this video, I share my experience filming an entire wedding with the ‪@SIRUIImaging‬ Anamorphic lens lineup. We used three MFT A-PSC Sirui Anamorphic lenses on our two GH5's. The Sirui 24mm, 35mm, and 50mm. I hope that this video will help anyone who is considering filming an entire wedding with Anamorphic lenses.

    Props for filming entirely with manual lenses. I've only filmed like 8 weddings, and although I have a decent handle on it, I don't think I'd be comfortable without some solid autofocus haha, things are just too hetic and that's one more factor I'd have to deal with. It would be so fun to use those lense though. I used the 50 once during the dancing portion of a wedding and that turned out beautiful. Great video

      @@StoryDrivenFilmmaking I have the 50mm for my GH5 - that thing has some nice bokeh, but I'm really liking the 35mm based off of your footage. Though I wanted the 24mm but not a fan of how you have to compensate with that close up example. If you could only pick 2 with you for a gig - which 2? Thanks for sharing!

    • @StoryDrivenFilmmaking
      @StoryDrivenFilmmaking  3 года назад +1

      Sorry I should specified that you would have to do that with the 35mm as well (if you got to close with it). That is really something that is common with Anamorphic lenses (when you film faces to close) and not just the Sirui lenses. So, If I could only have two of them? That is such a hard decision to make 😥. I definitely have to have the 50mm for the toasts and close-ups for the formal dances. So I asked my wife to decide between the 24 and the 35mm. She choose the 24mm because it's much wider and taller. That's a harder decisionfor me because or the 24mm's f2.8 aperture (for the reception).

    Fantastic video and really interesting to see your process. Great tip about the minimum focal distance!
    As a fellow owner of all 3 sirui lenses and a GH5, I wonder your thoughts on the color differences between the 3 lenses. I love all 3 lenses, but after doing a little test I noticed my 35 was significantly warmer than the other 2 lens. I did a side by side comparison, and honestly none of them match, but the 24 and 50 were a lot closer than the 35. The 35 was really off, and a lot warmer with a slight yellow cast. Of course this can be resolved by white balancing each lens, but it's definitely something to be aware of.
    I think I might save each lens as a separate WB preset, so I don't have to re-white balance when switching lenses.
    I'm curious how you deal with the issue.
    Again, really digging your content, and as a fellow GH5 owner, it's always great to see the amazing images that camera can make.

    • @StoryDrivenFilmmaking
      @StoryDrivenFilmmaking  3 года назад

      Hi thank you and I always happy to share. And you are correct about the difference in colors, actually before I purchased the 35mm another reviewer mentioned the difference between the 50 and 35mm colors so I was aware of this. I did have to do a few small WB tweaks with the wedding footage in post when making this video but it wasn't too bad since I filmed in Vlog-L.

    Hi Thomas, I love the fluidity the rhythm and the freshness of your videos and all that thanks to your narration. What happened to your dji RSC2? You had already convinced me to buy it, but now that I see that you changed it for the RS2 I'm not sure if I should rather think about going for the RS2, but my budget is not enough for the combo and even less for the 3D focus.

    • @StoryDrivenFilmmaking
      @StoryDrivenFilmmaking  3 года назад

      Hi Oscar, thank you so much. You know these type of videos are just as much for me as for you guys. I feel like if I can explain my process for a project then I can know where I can improve and I can do even better for the next shoot. Regarding the RSC 2 and the RS 2, I have a video coming about the RS 2 and I am going to explain why I moved up. The short answer is as I mentioned in my last RSC2 video (with the mansion) the battery life just wasn't enough on the RSC2. I need a gimbal to last for 13 hours (the RS 2 definitely does that and more). I like the RSC 2 and I don't think I am going to get rid of it (just yet atleast). Lastly, the RSC2 does not work with the 3D focus (I bought the 3D focus when I purchased the RSC2 and I was not aware that they were not compatible). So I got tired of looking at my unused DJI 3D Focus lol.

    I love your videos man, I really prefer lens reviews focused around experience rather than people who use the lens for a day and then throw up a sharpness chart and some cool shots(no shade to those people). So I wanna shoot full anamorphic with these lenses, I own the 24 and I’m aiming to get either the 35 or the 50mm. I really wanna get good close ups but I often find myself shooting in smaller places so the idea of the 50mm is a little crazy, so I’m wondering if you think closeups on the 35 are good enough compared to the 50. I’d imagine the 50 is better for that depth of field cause it’s more of a telephoto focal length but I wonder if I can achieve that same look with the 35mm. Love your videos man, well worth the wait.

      Thanks Camilo. So regarding the 50 and the 35mm. If we are talking about close-ups of peoples faces I'm going to say the 50mm all day. If we are talking about close-ups of items/decor then I would say the 35mm is much more manageable. The reason why I say the 50mm for faces is you won't have to worry about switching your aspect ratio to 1.25 because you can be further than the minimal focal range and still get a nice close up of someone that will not distort their face.

    Thanks for the great videos. I have been watching your different anamorphic shoots. I am also a wedding videographer using a gh5 and am considering playing around with anamorphic lenses. I know you showed the different aspect ratios you use, are you adjusting that in camera or in post? I know most people say to keep the 1.33 in 16x9 rather than 4:3. Thanks!

      Hey Jon, I wanted to shoot this wedding with all Anamorphic lenses and at the time when I filmed this wedding I did not have an Anamorphic lens for my S5 yet. For L Mount (And RF) Sirui lenses you have to order them from a company called MTF Services (they are based out of the United Kingdom). I recieved it about 2 weeks after I filmed this wedding. I actually just purchased a second S5 (as I broke one of my GH5's) a few days ago at a wedding😥. So moving forward I will be filming weddings with two S5's and one GH5.

  • @andrewmusgrave5377
    @andrewmusgrave5377 3 года назад +1

    Hey, I share your view that the 35mm is a great choice for the creative/narrative-look.
    I don't know if this sort of question is appropriate for your particular channel because your focus is on weddings and parties, but if you could advise an aspiring indie-filmmaker with a tight budget, do you think you could recommend a setup built around a 35mm f2.8(ish) look that could handle low light? I've limited my research to APS-Cs and full-frames so I'm pretty ignorant about what 4/3s can offer.

    • @StoryDrivenFilmmaking
      @StoryDrivenFilmmaking  3 года назад +1

      Hi Andrew, I am happy to help. I've only owned 2 MFT cameras thus far. The GH5 and the GH5S. The GH5S is superior to the GH5 in low light (and has a slightly wider field of view). The only thing that the GH5S lacks is image stabilization (So I always used mine on a gimbal). I recently sold my GH5S when I purchased the Lumix S5 as the S5 would be even better in low light than the GH5S, have a even wider field of view since it is a Full frame camera, and still has image stabilization. You can find the GH5S on Ebay from $1100 - $1400 and the S5 is $2k. The one downside to the S5 is going to be the lack of lens choices in the L-mount line-up (at least for now). MFT lenses are pretty inexpensive compared to FF. I hope that info helps!

    • @andrewmusgrave5377
      @andrewmusgrave5377 3 года назад

      @@StoryDrivenFilmmaking Thanks for the reply! If budget's an issue, would you say 4/3s is the way to go in general? Main reason I'm asking is because while full frames are more expensive than the GH5S, the Nikon Z50 is less expensive, and it too is a bit tempting.

    • @StoryDrivenFilmmaking
      @StoryDrivenFilmmaking  3 года назад +1

      So the short answer is I think MFT is definitely the cheaper option. But I do think the Z50 is a great option if you wanted a bigger sensor with it being A-PSC (and it has great AF). I used it for one video when I first started this channel and never used it again as I was already invested in MFT. Pushing budget to the side, I think it's most important to invest in the camera system/brand that you think you'll be happy with in the long term. What I mean is do you think you would want to grow within the Nikon ecosystem for the next 4-5 years. After the z50 would you want to then go to the Z6 or Z5? Do you like their lens line-up (how much do their lenses cost compared to Canon, Sony, or Panasonic
      and vice versa..). Also do you like their color science? I love Panasonic's color science, ergonomics, and menu systems that's why I deal with all of their other flaws lol. To be honest I would definitely be a Black Magic user (because I edit in Resolve) if it wasn't for how awkwardly sharped the bmpcc 6k body is (but I still may take the 6K pro for a test drive).

    • @andrewmusgrave5377
      @andrewmusgrave5377 3 года назад

      @@StoryDrivenFilmmaking It's hard to answer. You know that video you put out a while ago about being a rabid spec-hunter? That's me right now.
      Currently the Z5 ticks all the right boxes, but investing in a Z50 means I can put more money in front of the camera (ie: actors, locations). I can live with the lack of stabilization (got a gimbal), and I can deal with a lack of full-frame IF the low-light is good enough.
      Colour quality is actually lower-priority to me than consistency -- I can live with imperfect colour so long as the image quality isn't fluctuating all over the place (that's one of the reasons why I'm leaning towards building around a single lens).
      Low-light noise is a way bigger problem, though. If I can't get rid of that then I might as well stick with the lousy budget cam that I have.
      Thanks for all these answers, btw! It's really helpful. We're in pandemic lockdown right now so this is the nerdiest discussion I've been able to have on the topic since the beginning of 2020!

    • @StoryDrivenFilmmaking
      @StoryDrivenFilmmaking  3 года назад +1

      Hey Shawn, thx for the comment. I definitely don't mind answering. Well, first I love my GH5 I dont think I would ever give it up. For a MFT camera it has so many great features (and is so easy to shoot with). The funny think about noise is so many feature films we watch have scenes that for one reason or a other turned out noisy. So for this wedding film all the shot weren't noisy, the only shots that had noise were a few of the indoor shots where my wife made a mistake and kept the ND filter on (mistakes happen). Its so funny when I was editing this video I was like a million people are going to kill me about the noise in those shots lol. But to my surprise you were the first one that has commented thus far. I ended up using them anyway because story matters to me first and those few shots helped tell the story I wanted so I kept them in (if I would have used noise reduction I could have removed it). But none of the ceremony or reception shots had those issues. I love the S5 and I do use it on a lot of weddings, I didnt use it on this one because I wanted to use all Anamorphic lenses and at the time of that wedding I hadn't recieved my L mount Sirui lenses yet (I have them now). I have two full wedding videos on this channel (all shot on the GH5) and if you check them out you wont see any of those issues. Buy yeah I use the GH5 because I really love it and I know it very well.
