I have a qestion. For 5 people, Passat B8 Wagon or the Skoda Superb gen.III liftback? I mean back seats room and how wide is the cabin there. Trunk size in both is more than decent size :) I like modern, dynamic exterior design of the new Superb, and oldschool vibe like Volvos back in the '80, interior design of the new Passat.
This guys was the best! Made car reviews very humorous while delivering all the good info. You remember that good info cause you enjoyed the way it was delivered as compared with others.
I just bought a 2014 estate VW Passat executive tdi bmt 2.0litre diesel this week top spec, full leather, heated seats, sat nav, parking sensors etc.... One of the best cars i have ever owned!
I learned to drive with a five speed manual, but when I moved to a more densely populated area and had to navigate city streets and stop and go traffic I came to appreciate an automatic. Its just a lot less hassle in such situations (so yeah, I'd take the six speed auto).
Sorry but I don't think it's looks are boring. Like so many German cars, they are understated with incremental changes. Changing the shape too much, like Nissan, suggests that you don't know what you are doing. Understated looks help with residuals too. Not keen on German humour but their cars are fab.
Own the outgoing version for nearly 4 years now, The car never let me down, good fuel consumption (1.4TSI 6.1l/100km), ride is fantastic, space enough for family + dog. Other than the not sporty drive it's perfect.
I switched from the Mazda 6 estate to this car and prefer the VW by some way. Not as nice looking perhaps, but in every other way I think it's better. And wouldn't you compare it to the E-class Merc rather than the C-class? It's closer to the former at least in size.
Does the boot also close automatically when you move your foot under the rear bumper? Or when you have hands full of luggage that you have just unloaded you still need to manually operate it via some push button?
+Julius Bundi There are no petrol engines available in the uk on the new passat. They were not selling enough of them to make it worth while importing them so they stopped selling them. All diesel now.
Is it just me or all VW products starting to look the same? Those taillights look super audi, and the way those air vents go across the dash is the same as the new Q7. Time to differentiate, all the vehicles being the same hurt GM here in the states.
Um...cars from the same brand are supposed to look very similar. That's the point of having a car brand. Otherwise everyone would just be making one car model and there would be 10000 car manufacturers out there.
notformebeaky Of course, every auto group shares the parts bin with each brand they own; however, put four circles on this car and no one is going to blink an eye. I can't think of other european parent brands that do this, besides vauxhall/opel, but then again those are GM products and basically the same brand as far as I know.
notformebeaky I fail to see how Chevy's Euro-meets-American design theme, Buick's same-as-Opel-Euro design theme, Cadillac's ultra sleek and modern Art & Science design theme, and GMC's strong American throwback-esque design theme are all the same. BTW I'm not trying to be an asshole, I'm being 100% legit.
They called us boring because we are sensible adults which doesn't want anything fancy and something which get us from a to b comfortably and safely. I don't need any fancy design which would look boring in several years and something drive "good handling" as if i am racing it everyday. Haters are always gonna hate!
I don't think that people think about price or fuel economy when choosing an automatic over a manual, it's probably because they're sick of pressing the clutch pedal, and shifting that damn stick all the time :-D I know I am.. ;-)
MegaVector2011 Oh please, manual is just a relic of the past, it¨s like washing your clothes by hand instead of using a washing machine. As far as I am concerned, the fuel and a slightly bigger price is well worth the more comfortable driving experience.
kronoss897 riiiiiiight and let's completely forget how much you need to pay from your wallet for repairs/maintenance, contrary to popular belief automatic gearbox are not that reliable, maybe for a few years but not forever. I would choose a manual over automatic any day no-brainer
***** Sure, it's more expensive than manual in terms of what you said, but still worth it. Also don't make it sound like manual is without any maintenance. But hey it's your call.
Roger. BTW 45 mpg (UK) when cruising 70 mph it's a really bad score for 2.0 TDI 150hp. I have a better score with my 2.0T 184hp petrol when driving 70mph.
I've had 2 different VW'S in the last 8 years and just got my 3rd...never had a problem with any of them....touch wood. All tdi engines all serviced by VW. Only extra ever has been free software updates. Solid build and bolted together properly....even considered a Ford Kuga this time but no...not as good as the VW on the inside...
My parents got rid of their Golf 7 after 11 months (It would have been sooner but VW took forever to come to a compromise settlement) as there were so many problems. I know quite a few people who have had VWs recently and been left high and dry by their 'paragons of reliability'. My A4 had faults and reliability problems from the word go, finally blowing its turbo at 55,000 miles. It was less reliable than the 159 which replaced it. I, personally, would never touch another VAG product unless I wanted to be best mates with the local dealer.
Odd that you state this is largest boot it it's class. Have you forgotten the Skoda Superb Estate? Yes the Passat manages a whole 17 litres more with the seats up, but with them down, the Superb is very signifcantly bigger.
This is a mighty fine family wagon, just check out the Skoda Superb wagon too, sorry Americans you are forbidden to try the czech version. On another note, the world press has gone to town on the VW emissions scandal but not a whisper about the fuel consumption scandal, where makers claim economy figures that are not attainable in the real world. Take a given level playing field of emissions control tech, each litre / gallon burned will result in a emission of exhaust nasties. To put it bluntly the less you burn the less you emit.
Lucky man Which is no better than any other no-german car. VolksWagen - A car for people. To be honest - I don't even consider german cars being better nowadays. What, Audi which look boring unless they're A6 or better, BMWs which also look boring unless they're 5 series or higher... The only one really is Mercedes - their C, E and S classes all look stunning. But say I was to choose between an A4/3 series or a car of a non "premium" brand for less money I'd rather take the non-premium (although to me they don't A4s and 3 series don't look premium) for less money.
Lucky man Instead of an A4? Insignia, Mondeo (especially that you can get those with really nice engines for a price of an A4), Mazda6 all the way, Passat is kind of boring but then a VW CC, yeah, why not? Those ones are pretty much it. But then obviously if I was looking for something bigger like an A6/5 series/E class, then there's not many companies that would offer a car with such standards.
Test drove this and the new Mondeo estate. Yes the Mondeo is more stylish and sporty to drive, but the Passat interior was far better quality and the seats more comfortable. Who needs sporty handling when stuck in usual stop/start traffic on the M1. The Passat was ordered. I know what's going to be worth more in 3 years too!
I really hope you didn't go for the 2.0 diesel with dsg and the full interactive touch screen infotainment system. You will be seeing your VW dealer more often than your mother.
Why are the British all about flamboyant cars? I actually like Volkswagen's understated look. It doesn't become outdated in the next few years like some other cars like Mazda and Ford for example. Ford = I can't afford anything else.
Shoot; why did we turn to touchscreens if a car like this has the ultimate; blindly finding the switches to adjust anything driing related?! Cool feature, these days.
Could you please have the reviews as they used to be in 2013 and before as they seemed more professional, not saying j don't like these reviwes but the other ones wereabit better
i had vw passat for 2 years.never took it garage except for oil change.now i have ford mondeo and i have been to garage thrice in 2 months..first injectors fucked then clutch gone now brake discs making noices.plz dont buy ford.
alex cross it's been quite the opposite with me. I have a VW Passat and a Ford Fiesta. The fiesta has been reliable for the last 6 years and only been in the garage to get some new wipers and brake light bulb. The Passat has had a new engine at 23,000 miles due to a oil pump failure. Not to mention handbrake faults and several recalls on this car. It's 10 years old now
One annoying detail is that the insulation is terrible, you can hear just about every stone and crack in the road. I mean look the doors, around the top from the inside, it's bare metal. the C5 uses insulation around that area, and so does the mondeo, The bare metal doors are only seen in vans these days!
I love the Passat, I've owned one... That being said. This estate version looks like it's meant to carry dead people in the back... It's way to rectangular... needs some curve BADLY... Ohh well... just have to wait for the new cc i guess..
Absolutely disagree the criticism against the Mondeo Estate boot. The floor is fmore lat for Mondeo, and even we can hide the hat holder (cover) tool under the floor, while back seats doesnt fold down flat in Passat either... Same engine comparasions shows often advantage for Ford for its lower prices, less CO emission. Maybe Passat payed more for better review, (they needed good review after the cheating), still I would buy the Ford.
Relax :) Manufacturer numbers is a hoax, standard procedure nowadays. I would say 35MPG(UK) in a real world combined cycle is doable. 60MPG? With 4-5 people and their stuff ? lol
Mercedes W205 If this car was doing 35 MPG combined, something would be wrong with it. Manufactures claimed MPG is very much achievable, its just people over rev them, don't drive them as economically as they should and don't give them a fair chance, and don't service or maintain them properly and then moan that they are not getting anywhere near the claimed figures. Fifth gear proved this. Search for Fifth gear economy test. They get a Volvo, Skoda and Smart car, fill them up with people, do mixed driving after a few gallons of fuel and then they get around 1 or 2 less than the claimed MPG. This Passat would not have broken in yet, it wasn't in top gear either.
Oliver Newell I agree. These tests are always done on new cars, and complaints are from people who have just received them. They don't consider the "run in" process of the engine/car life cycle. Honestly some people just expect them to work at optimum levels instantly, the "straight out of the box" mentality.
Mercedes W205 I've gotten my car up to 70MPG on the motorway and Ford's figures are 62MPG when it was new, it's now 9 years old with 170k miles on the clock.
That is my opinion, of wich i'm entitled to. What makes you such an expert? I can see you don't have a feel for discrete irony, and that you have a soft spot for a very generic and recently quite bland auto brand. My advice to you, don't be so jumpy on making somewhat rude comments regarding other people. Enjoy the freedom of speach without offending. Bye now
Are you sure the seats won't go flat if you lift the seat bases first. Why such a basic design failure in an Estate... ? Like the improved quality and the square useful design, why can't a manufacturer like VW with all their experience actually get that detail correct ?
45 to the gallon in a diesel on the motorway... is it even worth it, I did a 165 mile trip on the motorway and for 45 to the gallon in my corsa VXR lol
thug898 Not the most comfy ride, but still not unbearable derbigpr500 I'm commenting purely on fuel consumption, the corsa is built to be a small car, where the Passat is built to be larger of course
It's so sodding obvious that Car Buyer are now in VWs pockets, constant VW group product reviews and not really a bad word to say about them as they would before their sponsorship. VWs, boring, dull and not as reliable as they'd have you believe!
True, mums Golf 7 went back after 11 months of nothing but poor build and devastating ating reliability. I actually think an 80s Alfa would have been better built and more reliable. Broke down twice, loads of irrepairable faults from delivery. VW are awful and cocky to deal with.
Martin Jones Where are you from? I'm asking because there are several VW factories around the world. It's maybe possible you got one, made in a different country. Not all VWs are manufactured in Germany.
tomkoempf96 UK. So it's not a Mexican one if that is what you are saying. After speaking to several others about this, it appears my Mum is not alone. Lots of Golf 7 owners are not happy. BUT, if VW value their reputation and their customers, it shouldn't matter where the car is made. They are offering a premium product at premium prices. My Mum actually bought an A class after this (with a Renault engine and multi-link independent rear suspension!!), which was actually cheaper! AND that is proving to be 100% reliable. My C250, for example, at 5 years old hasn't skipped a beat.
Martin Jones according to a statistic with 5 million cars over a 3 year period the vw golf is the 2nd most reliable car right behind the toyota auris. I'm quite sick of all those possible paid bullshiters with their made up personal stories about unreliable german cars when in every statistic you can find japanese and german cars are battling it out for place 1 and 2. if you don't like these cars then good look finding better ones, idiot.
I agree. I don't like that the hood lines come down at one angle and the headlights are at another. The headlights should've continued the hood lines, like the previous Passat.
Is that the same 2.0 diesel that sounds like a tractor and will destroy its turbo like my old AUDI. If it is anything like the Golf 7, expect it to start breaking down and falling to pieces in the first year.
nnnaaa i disagree, i think the passat estate is a very very very good car . I am now on my 3rd and the engine is excellent and i think the passat looks best as an estate, and if vw keep it up there on to some thing good for the future, i love and prefer vw cars, had the golf great fun to drive , had 2 CC,s great cars adn very under rated car. i wanted an estate as well truth i do not like suv,s , i don,t want a big heavy tank and suv are not that good on suspention very jerky and higher up so you get more body roll, the passat for me is the best estate car, super reliable cars. My mpg is excellent my figures are confirmed also and i have always had the mauals as they do better mpg , 48 - 53.7 normal and 62 and above on motorways, i mean you really cannot grumble at that , and a lot of suv,s are terrible on mpg. i highly recommend the vw passat business se edition its a great starting point to get your self into these cars, 1.6 is a great car and if you want a little more punch get the 2.0 tdi both are good and both return great figures, you won,t be dissapointed at all
I just bought this Passat as my first car! best choice ever! I am in love with it!
2:10 Thank you sir for using proper units! :)
This Passat actually looks pretty sweet!
Yes, everything a daddy needs.
I have a qestion. For 5 people, Passat B8 Wagon or the Skoda Superb gen.III liftback? I mean back seats room and how wide is the cabin there. Mercedes W205
Man, If it's only for the size of the car, see a dealer. Plus, Skoda is owned by Volkswagen, so if you ask them, they will answer.
Mercedes W205 On my own experience the Skoda Superb has more leg room and space than the Passat, also consider the Mercedes Benz E series.
Charlles Pereira Costa Škoda Superb always have more leg room than any middle- high class car

Executive Style was top spec for b7. Executive spec was one down.
The rear seats do lie completely flat, lift up the rear seat base against front seats and you get a completely flat load area.

3:15 and that's the reason why I hate climate control with touch screen.
the best car reviewer in the UK
current vw cars are really really attractive. i'd definitely like to own one of these
It REALLY needs those LED lights to make it more upmarket and less dull!

the above video is for the Diesel Version, is there an option for the Petrol one with the same features?
Kindly help.
Julius
+Julius Bundi There are no petrol engines available in the uk on the new passat. They were not selling enough of them to make it worth while importing them so they stopped selling them. All diesel now.
Is the diesel one a good car? Sorry for many questions.
+Julius Bundi The R-Line is a 240 bhp engine so IMO yes very.
Are yu the same guy doing the review and writing over here on this video?
+Julius Bundi No.

Wow - I know it's chilly here in the UK right now but Matt - it appears you're wearing 5 layers!
This car reminds me previous generation of Mondeo. It seems to be very similar.
Great review Mat!
personally, I think this car looks better than the Mondeo, especially with the R design
Full size spare wheel! That's sweet :)
It's a £300 option.

How many pairs od All Stars does he own?
Best 2015 car. Hands down. Mercedes and BMW have just to learn.
Quality Germany build. Vast space . Great for reps and looks better than the Ford Mondeo.
Yes but its still a vw

that's a 187hp version: look at the rear of the car! Is it worth the extra money compared to the 150hp version?

mate m not tryna b rude but if your experience sugests you ford is better then why did you post question about reliability..
Really nice car!
Please review the new Mazda 6!
You only get better economy with the manual if you drive economically 100% of the time. The automatic does just that all by itself.
One annoying detail is that the insulation is terrible, you can hear just about every stone and crack in the road. For some reason the Dacia estate look like a mini van lol
dacias are shit
Maybe! But u get what u are paying for
Valentin Leuca
Actualy Dacias are way more reliable than VW
niksarass thats why they only get a one year warranty right?......
It *really* looks like a 1997-2001 Saab 9-5 in the front
Not surprised,vw only copyes and thinks that it would help him but at end of the day its a vw.
i like it thought i like my wee corsa. getting probly 400mi per tank
Not even day time LED's in this allegedly premium car
I can see people trolling you with this boot feature on the stop lights .
Doing 70mph on a straight stretch of a B road is not a fair representation of motorway economy......
It wasn't even in top gear when he pointed it out either.
Best vw ever bild...
I think they are looking for personelle at BBC, auto review dept . Sure they would consider you . Good luck !
Well you are great here anyway !
wtf, how many jackets and clothes do you have on you, you must be melting over there...:/
I still can't see major differences between this and the one 2 generations ago.
Dodo M are you blind?
You mean the sparkly crome?
Then you're simply utterly clueless about cars and should just stop watching car content in general.
Bye now
And you worm, why are you alive?
Nice passat
Are you sure the seats won't go flat if you lift the seat bases first. Why such a basic design failure in an Estate... ? Like the improved quality and the square useful design, why can't a manufacturer like VW with all their experience actually get that detail correct ?
45 to the gallon in a diesel on the motorway... is it even worth it, I did a 165 mile trip on the motorway and for 45 to the gallon in my corsa VXR lol
How many pieces did you spine end up in after 165 miles in the corsa vxr ? 😂😂😂😂
The difference is, you can't fit a Passat estate in the back of a Corsa.
thug898 Not the most comfy ride, but still not unbearable
derbigpr500 I'm commenting purely on fuel consumption, the corsa is built to be a small car, where the Passat is built to be larger of course
Y like this easy model (1580kg),not Mondeo sw with 1720kg.That are the real weight, not what the producer says
It's so sodding obvious that Car Buyer are now in VWs pockets, constant VW group product reviews and not really a bad word to say about them as they would before their sponsorship. VWs, boring, dull and not as reliable as they'd have you believe!
+1
I prefer the avensis 🙂
Sangat baik perfm , design extr & intr .
Why do car manufacturers use Leather as a term for that fake leather seat upholstery?
Faux leather ot fake leather in this price range, sounds weak man :D
it's real leather lol if it was a bmw then it'd be fake haha
needs to come to canada
Passat has never been a style icon but i really dont like the new front grill/headlights look. Something about it seems out of proportion.
I agree. I don't like that the hood lines come down at one angle and the headlights are at another. The headlights should've continued the hood lines, like the previous Passat.
Everyone, this is a 2.0 190 bhp not a 150 bhp
nice wagon
Hey Mat, nice shoes man :D
need this car in the United States.
Is that the same 2.0 diesel that sounds like a tractor and will destroy its turbo like my old AUDI. If it is anything like the Golf 7, expect it to start breaking down and falling to pieces in the first year.
it REALLY looks like an old Saab 9-5 in the front
nnnaaa i disagree, i think the passat estate is a very very very good car .
