Everybody keeps focusing on a supernatural aspect to this but it's not. And I don't know why everybody thinks it's the holy Spirit as in some entity. You need to think of it in terms of who is being restrained. The lawless ones are the ones being restrained right now. It's the police. All power dominion and authority are enemies of Jesus Christ. He will defeat them all and then The last enemy to be defeated will be death itself.

In case of Anti christ God deals himself (2 thess 2:8) not through any human or so called anointed prophet.

When the rapture takes place, the Holy Spirit then stands back and allows the man of sin, the antichrist, to be revealed.

@@Tony-rf1vo Well, no. But you're not too far off. Falling Away first? Yes. Someone is taken out of the way later? Yes. Sometime after that, the Man of Sin is revealed? Yes. But hold on a moment with that 'Rapture'! All we know for sure is that we will be gathered and in that gathering the dead in Christ will rise first and then the living at His coming. Rev 20:5 gives us the "first resurrection" which seems to fit what is written in the Old Testament and what Martha referred to in John 11:24. Please note that Christ did not correct Martha's timing of the resurrection which she had learned, possibly by things like Job 19:25-27 . Introducing the extra-biblical term "Rapture" confuses the issue. We are gathered unto Him by being caught up. The exact timing? No necessary to know. Let God take care of that since it it His plan.
John is absolutely correct on this teaching. Thank you, The Holy Ghost confirmed for me. Man is incapable of preventing sin in their own lives, how could they restrain the very devil that tempts them now?

PaPa Brad SOG Many teach “the restrainer” of 2 Thessalonians chapter 2 to be the Holy Spirit, the Church, God, Archangel Michael or even the Roman government but none of these are correct. But before we identify this restrainer, let us first determine that which the restrainer is holding back. We need to look at “certain facts” we know about the restrainer that the participle has no compliment; that is, no direct object to receive the action of the participle. The direct object is implied rather than explicitly stated. So we must supply that direct object. Nearly all of the popular solutions to the problem of the restrainer’s identity have assumed that the man of lawlessness is being held back by the restrainer. This has always been the premise of previous studies. Until now, it seems, no one has seriously questioned this assumption. But is this, in fact, the correct implied direct object of the participle? We must be willing to explore every possibility in order to be assured that we have arrived at the correct solution. So, perhaps the correct question to ask of the text is not, “What is holding back the revelation of the lawless one?,” but rather, “What is the restrainer holding back?” To answer this more foundational question, let us go back to the subject Paul is addressing. It is essential that we interpret this in view of the wider context. Paul clearly states his topic in verse 1: “Concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered to him.” The whole of chapter 2, then, is the Paul’s response to the confusion about the arrival of this historic event. The coming of our Lord is what Paul is concerned with in this passage, not the coming of the lawless one. The confusion of the Thessalonians was not about the coming of that lawless one, but over the rumor regarding the arrival of the day of Jesus. Accordingly, Paul is explaining that The Lord’s second coming has not yet occurred because, in fact, other prophesied events must be fulfilled first. So, “the coming of Jesus and our gathering to him” are being restrained. Thus, verse 6 should be understood to say, “and now you know what is holding him (Jesus) back,” or even, “now you know what is holding it (the day of The Lord) back.”
The apostle corrected any misunderstanding about The Lord’s coming in verses 3 and 4 by reminding them of what he had explained at length while he was with them - that the day of The Lord’s second coming can not arrive until the prophetic events of the tribulation period are fulfilled. Then in verse 6, Paul reiterates his correction to their confusion when he begins: “And now you know what is holding...back.” So what is it that the Thessalonians now know? They were just told and now know that the day of The Lord will not come until after the apostasy occurs and the man of lawlessness commits the abomination of desolation. Those two events were standing in the way of the second coming of The Lord and then the rapture.
The popular solutions to the identity of the restrainer assume that the man of lawlessness is being held back. But why would Paul be discussing what is holding back the lawless one when the more pertinent information the Thessalonians needed to be reminded of was the fact that certain prophesied events were holding back the coming of The Lord? The whole point Paul is driving home in chapter 2 is that the day of The Lord’s second coming is being hindered! The restrainer, therefore, is holding back the day of The Lord’s post tribulation coming and the rapture of the church. Since the day of The Lord is being held back, then, as we have already discussed at length, the apostasy and the revelation of the man of lawlessness are holding it back, because those two events must occur first. The restrainer, then, is the Antichrist, aka the lawless one.
If you are not aware, most English versions of the Bible translate 2 Thessalonians 2:7,8a alike. For example, The NIV says that “the one who holds it back will continue to do so till he is taken out of the way. And then the lawless one will be revealed....” Because of this kind of rendering, nearly all who read this text are led to believe that only when a certain individual is removed will the lawless one be revealed. But we already know that the restrainer is not holding back the revelation of the Antichrist . Instead, the Antichrist is that restrainer at the abomination of desolation who is holding back the day of The Lord . The mistranslation of the phrase “taken out of the way” is a major reason for the confusion about the restrainer’s identity.
First, the word translated, “taken,” is not an accurate rendering of the Greek word in our text. It was pointed out earlier that in order to do justice to this passage of Scripture, we must insist on utilizing the normal meaning of words as long as the normal meaning renders a coherent thought and makes sense within the context of what the author is writing. Unfortunately, in 2 Thessalonians 2:7, the normal meaning of the word translated “taken” was not used. Consequently, the translation not only misses the point of what Paul was saying, but it renders the exact opposite sense which he intended.
Another example of a grossly perverted translation of this verse can be found in the NCV at verse 6, which has switched Jesus out and replaced Him with the Antichrist.
Look at these verses in the heretical NKJV-7 For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only He who now restrains will do so until He is taken out of the way.
Do you see that they capitalized the “H” thus giving deity to the Antichrist!
Now you know what the agenda is on these perverted translations.

Anyone reading this, if you read the text, you will arrive at the Biblical conclusion that the restrainer is holding the man of lawlessness back, and he will be revealed in his time. Verses 1-3 speak about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. verses 3-12 deal with the man of lawlessness, not Jesus. Just the fact that anyone would think that something other than God the Father could hold back the return of Jesus is laughable. He is being held back because other prophesied events haven't happened! Well who does above writer think is in control of prophecy, the day of the Lord, all recorded history, if not the Sovereign God.
It gets more laughable that he states the lawless one is holding back the Day of the Lord. Well there you have a sovereign satan, who is in charge, and God is held back by him.
This is what happens when people put their own interpretation on Scripture, and twist it to fit with what they believe. I would hate to see what you do with the rest of Scripture. Have discernment people, read and study Scripture, and be a Berean.
jude newman I suggest you throw away your heretical Catholic bible and erase what virtually every modern preacher teaches you regarding “the restrainer”, especially John “you can take the mark and still be saved” MacArthur.
Look, it’s very simple what Paul was making clear. 2 things have to happen before the return of Christ. (1) the falling away or Apostasy &
(2) the abomination of desolation.
The logic is simple, God’s Word has to be fulfilled for the return of Christ and thus the antichrist (Donald Trump) has to commit the abomination of desolation in the 3rd temple. God cannot lie, thus his Word must be fulfilled.

This makes the most sense and fits with the Chronological order of revelations
A good example of the Holy Spirit restraining is in Revelation as HE holds back the angels at the 4 corners of the earth ready to give judgement, meaning God the Father is the one who says who will release.
Paul gave us the Truth!
Paul said that we now know what Hinders "That the Man of Sin might be Revealed in his Appointed Time!"
Its that simple!
ONLY at the Appointed Time will that Man of Sin come into existence and be revealed doing as is Prophesied!
Analogy... The RESTRAINER will not be REMOVED by God... but it is like "CATCH (withhold) and RELEASE (free)" by/of the RESTRAINER in God's appointed time... the same analogy... Amen.
Points on the Micheal the archangel viewpoint:
1. God has no equals.
2. Satan is a created being, and because of this, therefore, his equal would have to be another equal being on the opposite side of the spectrum... particularly, an angel (remember Satan is nothing less than a fallen ANGEL) of high stature--Micheal.
3. When Micheal "arises" it it said following that verse in Daniel 12:1, that THEN there will be great tribulation.

Yes it is Micheal the ark angel. Rev 3:10 is not a pre trib rapture support verse, it is referring to those that are kept safe for the last 3 1/2 years from the pursuit of satan in Rev 12 :7 to the end of the chapter, read it for yourself.

The thesselonians knew who the restrainer presently was and soon to know who was being restrained. Paul promised them, in this letter, in clear and explicit terms, that Christ would return to relieve them from their persecution and pay retribution against those who were persecuting the thesselonians. But before this the man of lawlessness would be revealed. Therefore, as any good student of scripture, one must follow the pronouns, follow the audience relevancy, follow the historical context, then MAYBE one could come to a solid conclusion on who this restrainer was.

Is Paul writing really writing a letter to them, while they are going through massive persecution, to promise retribution for this persecution to a people 2,000+ years down the road? Are those thesselonians still alive and awaiting this relief and retribution?
Preterism is the only eschatology that does justice to scripture and follows a consistent hermeneutic/exegesis throughout scripture.

Don't let anyone deceives you by any means for the Lord's Day will not come unless these two things occur first:
"One, the people will reach the peak of their rebellion against the Truth that is being preached by the saints and....

What will this wicked power is going to do?
"He will oppose and exalt himself above all the holy ones, so that he sets himself up in God's heavenly temple proclaiming himself as the Eternal God or the Holy Father, the head of the church and the dispenser of truth."
(Why is it that God will let the people to be ruled by this wicked ruler and also why will he let his saints to be captivated and oppressed?)
Because of the people's rebellion, God will punish them and at the same time, to test the faithfulness of his saints even in times of tribulation so that they can rightfully join Christ in judging the world on his Day.
Apostle Paul continued, "This secret power of lawlessness is already at work during these times but someone is hindering its exposé and he will remain secret until the one who is keeping him from being revealed is taken out of the way."
Satan, the Dark Power is hiding this power of wickedness, his tool for deception, so that he can effectively deceive the world and can lead the people to follow his evil teachings, and to facilitate his reign over them and over the saints. But after his appointed day ends, the Lord will come down, seize him, bound him, and will throw him in prison. If that happened already...
"Then the wicked one will be exposed whom the Lord will slain by the word of truth and destroy by the brightness of his Day."
And that Day will be a thousand bright years, the end times of the world to face God's judgments, mercy, and salvation.
But before that Day, Apostle Paul explained the Day of the Wicked One. He will perform counterfeit miracles using the power of Satan to deceive those who are perishing. They perish because they rejected the truth that should have saved them, but instead, they chose and delighted in wickedness. This is why God will send this powerful spirit of delusion over them so that they will continue to believe the lie and be condemned.
What history confirms?
During the 5th century until the ends of the 17th century, the spirit behind the papacy of the Rome claimed he is the Holy Father and head above all the saints and the sole teacher of truth and that the Day of the Lord is already reigning. But he and his wrong teachings were exposed, he was overpowered, and his church was divided at the ends of the 1700's onward.
Paul said the restrainer was the man of lawlessness. Jesus's coming will be restrained until the man of lawlessness commits the final abomination, then Jesus comes and destroys him "with the glory of his coming". 2 Thessalonians 2 Jesus "cannot come" before this event.
It's obvious many don't know the power the Church wills. . So many comments undermining what the church can do..

538 AD +1260 years= 1798 the Roman Catholic Church received the Mortal wound during the French revolution by bertier under the orders of Napoleon, and in 1929 Mussolini president of Italy sign a document to bring a smallest state in the world to live again. healing of the wound began and when that wound is completely healed this world shall go through a time of trouble such has never been. In contrast, the Methodist publication The Interpreter's Bible states, "Abaddon, however, is an angel not of Satan but of God, performing his work of destruction at God's bidding", citing the context at Revelation chapter 20, verses 1 through 3.[13][page needed] Jehovah's Witnesses also cite Revelation 20:1-3 where the angel having "the key of the abyss" is actually shown to be a representative of God, concluding that "Abaddon" is another name for Jesus after his resurrection.wikipedia.

MacArthur's futurism (a tradition of doctrines which is manmade) falls apart with even the least study. John MacArthur is teaching these things that happened around 70 AD as being future now. Manmade fables is not what he should be teaching, but he plainly is.
Tradition is so strong. How anyone can read these letters and come to all manner of futurists theories is only through these deluded traditions. Paul couldn’t be any more clear to the thesselonians that Christ would come TO THEM to relieve them from their persecutors and pay retribution. There are two comings described in 2 Thessalonians 2:
First, the people will reach the peak of their rebellion against the good message of the saints so God will punish them by letting the Wicked One rule over them, and at the same time, the faith of the saints will be tested to the fullest so that they will have all the rights to join Christ when his Day comes to judge the world.
During the coming (reign or day) of this Wicked One, he will oppose the saints and will exalt himself above them all by establishing his throne in the church of God and claiming he is God or the Holy Father (Santo Papa) and Head of the Church of God.
Apostle Paul said that this wicked power was already at work even during the first century C.E. but in mystery or in secrecy (hidden, covered, unexposed or unrevealed yet) and that situation will continue until the one who was keeping him from being exposed is taken out of the way.
I believe that this hindrance to the revelation of this wicked spirit or power is no other than Satan, the Dark One. He is the power of darkness that was hiding the wickedness of his son (symbolized as man of sin).
The Lord will seize, chain, and imprison Satan first so that the Wicked One will be revealed.

Paul assured the Thessalonians that Christ's coming was NOT imminent. He said our gathering together unto him (the rapture) would not happen unless the apostasy occurs and the Lawless one be revealed first. Right? So how is it imminent?

Please consider this. The subject of 2 Thess 2 is the coming of Jesus and our gathering to him(rapture)Paul then says that day can't come until antichrist is revealed. Paul did not write this letter to the thesselonians with chapter a verse divisions. It was one complete letter written to them. is Paul promising them to be relieved from this persecution at the day of the Lord when He takes vengeance against their persecutors in 2,000+ years? Or is Paul writing a letter to them that isn’t even for them and the “you” isn’t actually to them (as he says it’s to them in 1:1) + the “them”, who are the persecutors God would pay retribution for at Christ’s coming, aren’t even their persecutors (as he says in 1:4-7). Is Paul writing really writing a letter to them, while they are going through massive persecution, to promise retribution for this persecution to a people 2,000+ years down the road? Are those thesselonians still alive and awaiting this relief and retribution?

Through studying the greek concerning this passage, it has come to my attention that a part of the passage in particular vs7 of the line: until he be " taken out of the way"is mistranslated, confusing greatly the meaning of 2 thess2:1-8 causing a plethora of false interpretations. Although I would say for many out of ignorance because every english version i have come across has universally used the mistranslation either deliberately out of there own presuppositional agenda and or in lacking wisdom ,copy and pasted the previous work of others without investigating in the greek.
the Great apostasy of the Faith must occur first before the antichrist comes out and reveals himself so the climax of the fallen away of the faith is what keeps the antichrist from revealing himself. but the focus of Paul is not who or what is restraining the antichrist but what and specifically who is restraining the 2nd return of Messiah Yeshua. sense the letter concerns the parousia of Yeshua and our gathering to Him while reminding the thessalonians of that appointed time because many were sending written reports that the day of YAHVH had already occurred.

So Paul was reminding them what restrains(neuter) as a whole concerning both awaiting events and who restrains(masculine) in particular is restraining Yeshua's return. which is the mystery of lawlessness already at work and will not come to its climax until the masculine restrainer comes out of the midst of where he is(not taken out of the way) to then reveal himself. then Yeshua is no longer restrained to return to then destroy the antichrist.

Interesting point but I still reject the idea that Michael is the restrainer, although he may assist in some point. Since Michael is the one who “watches over your people” (Israel) it would seem ludicrous to me that he would let go before the nation’s most stressful time in history. Many teach “the restrainer” of 2 Thessalonians chapter 2 to be the Holy Spirit, the Church, God, Archangel Michael or even the Roman government but none of these are correct. But before we identify this restrainer, let us first determine that which the restrainer is holding back. We need to look at “certain facts” we know about the restrainer that the participle has no compliment; that is, no direct object to receive the action of the participle. The direct object is implied rather than explicitly stated. So we must supply that direct object. Nearly all of the popular solutions to the problem of the restrainer’s identity have assumed that the man of lawlessness is being held back by the restrainer. This has always been the premise of previous studies. Until now, it seems, no one has seriously questioned this assumption. But is this, in fact, the correct implied direct object of the participle? We must be willing to explore every possibility in order to be assured that we have arrived at the correct solution. So, perhaps the correct question to ask of the text is not, “What is holding back the revelation of the lawless one?,” but rather, “What is the restrainer holding back?” To answer this more foundational question, let us go back to the subject Paul is addressing. It is essential that we interpret this in view of the wider context. The apostle corrected any misunderstanding about The Lord’s coming in verses 3 and 4 by reminding them of what he had explained at length while he was with them - that the day of The Lord’s second coming can not arrive until the prophetic events of the tribulation period are fulfilled. Then in verse 6, Paul reiterates his correction to their confusion when he begins: “And now you know what is holding...back.” So what is it that the Thessalonians now know? They were just told and now know that the day of The Lord will not come until after the apostasy occurs and the man of lawlessness commits the abomination of desolation. Those two events were standing in the way of the second coming of The Lord and then the rapture.
The popular solutions to the identity of the restrainer assume that the man of lawlessness is being held back. But why would Paul be discussing what is holding back the lawless one when the more pertinent information the Thessalonians needed to be reminded of was the fact that certain prophesied events were holding back the coming of The Lord? The whole point Paul is driving home in chapter 2 is that the day of The Lord’s second coming is being hindered! The restrainer, therefore, is holding back the day of The Lord’s post tribulation coming and the rapture of the church. Since the day of The Lord is being held back, then, as we have already discussed at length, the apostasy and the revelation of the man of lawlessness are holding it back, because those two events must occur first. The restrainer, then, is the Antichrist, aka the lawless one.
If you are not aware, most English versions of the Bible translate 2 Thessalonians 2:7,8a alike. For example, The NIV says that “the one who holds it back will continue to do so till he is taken out of the way. And then the lawless one will be revealed....” Because of this kind of rendering, nearly all who read this text are led to believe that only when a certain individual is removed will the lawless one be revealed. But we already know that the restrainer is not holding back the revelation of the Antichrist . Instead, the Antichrist is that restrainer at the abomination of desolation who is holding back the day of The Lord . The mistranslation of the phrase “taken out of the way” is a major reason for the confusion about the restrainer’s identity.
First, the word translated, “taken,” is not an accurate rendering of the Greek word in our text. It was pointed out earlier that in order to do justice to this passage of Scripture, we must insist on utilizing the normal meaning of words as long as the normal meaning renders a coherent thought and makes sense within the context of what the author is writing. Unfortunately, in 2 Thessalonians 2:7, the normal meaning of the word translated “taken” was not used. Consequently, the translation not only misses the point of what Paul was saying, but it renders the exact opposite sense which he intended.
Another example of a grossly perverted translation of this verse can be found in the NCV at verse 6, which has switched Jesus out and replaced Him with the Antichrist.
Look at these verses in the heretical NKJV-7 For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only He who now restrains will do so until He is taken out of the way.

In 2 Thessalonians 2 Paul tells the church to "not be deceived" that that day has occurred. He says "did I not tell you" that "that day will not occur until the man of sin has been revealed"
Why would Paul admonish the church to not believe the day has come of they have not yet seen the man of sin revealed of they wouldn't be there to see it? Makes zero sense. Is not only poor logic and reasoning but twisting the scripture to say the church would be gone before the man of sin is revealed. You'd have to erase 2 thessalonians 2 from your Bible for pretrib to be true.

That restrainer would be in Daniel 12:1 2nd Thessalonians 2 1-8 in verse 2 we are not the restrainer some people that are not Christians which includes pastors leave the faith because they believe that they would have been raptured already but clearly and verse 1 it speaks about the Rapture and that two things have to happen first. First the falling away the apostasy the departure from the faith and then the Antichrist reveals himself which he does in the middle of the tribulation.

John MacArthur makes seemingly several contradictions . One, of these contradictions concerns his declaring, that the Rapture will only take place, After the "Times of the GENTILES be fulfilled",
( Rom.11:25 ) which I agree is Correct, ...But then he goes on to say about the Timing of the RAPTURE, that he believes it will take place BEFORE the coming TRIBULATION !! ( And THAT, After he has declared that the RAPTURE CANNOT happen UNTIL the "TIMES of the GENTILES come in", and his citing of Rom.11:25, as proof )
So What do we do with Luke 21:24, that declares that;..."and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled."
And Rev.11:2, declares this very SAME time Element to continue through the last 42 months of the TRIBULATION, as follows;..."But the court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is GIVEN unto the GENTILES: and the HOLY CITY shall THEY TREAD UNDERFOOT FORTY AND TWO MONTHS".
So John MacArthur's apparent contradiction is in my understanding REFUTED by these TWO PASSAGES, which declare that the TIMES Of the GENTILES, does NOT END, until the last day of the TRIBULATION !!! ( which incidentally, is the DAY that JESUS said He would "Raise-Up", those that the Father had Given Him. Jn.6:40 )
I have sent John MacArthur an Email to his website with this information So let us see if he will respond to my question, and Clarify, or re-examine his belief structure.

Mr. MacArthur defeats his own argument by admitting the antichrist is an earthly being, therefore constained by an earthly being. Satan has only two powers in this earthly realm, 1) temptation, 2) deception. The man of lawlessness operates at satan's behest, but with earthly powers of man. Thus, the Restrainer likewise operates with earthly power and authority. Secondly, the Restrainer is "taken out of the way." Some propose Michael as the Restrainer, but Michael's busy fighting satan in heaven during this time. How do we know? Jesus tells us so in Luke10:18 when He says, "I saw satan fall like lightning from higher-ground." At the moment of antichrist's empowerment, Michael casts satan down, Jesus sees the event as it occurs, and as He reports in Luke. Michael's busy, Jesus is busy, the Restrainer must be some as yet unknown (to the reader) character?
Bible isn't trying to trick anyone, nor to deceive. Yes, Michael is is some way restraining satan, by engaging him in battle, but the question today is 'who Restrains antichrist," not who restrains satan.
Another related clue (misinterpreted by the esteemed Mr. MacArthur) relates to the antichrist being revealed "in his time." Because Jesus already named the antichrist two-thousand years ago, but that was not 'in the antichrist's time,' it was back in Jesus' ministry (time). Only after the antichrist's revealed in end-times, will the majority look back and see they missed Jesus' revelation (of antichrist's actual name) entirely. The odd wording, "in his time," relates to Jesus having already spoken the antichrist's name out loud and it being written in billions of Bibles for hundreds of years, yet almost everyone missing it? Jews won't be the only one's slapping their foreheads on that day.
Once one uncovers the name Jesus spoke, Restrainer's identity becomes obvious.
2THESSALONIANS 2:3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day (The coming of Jesus) shall not come, except there come *a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed...*

Is Paul writing really writing a letter to them, while they are going through massive persecution, to promise retribution for this persecution to a people 2,000+ years down the road? Are those thesselonians still alive and awaiting this relief and retribution?
Preterism is the only eschatology that does justice to scripture and follows a consistent hermeneutic/exegesis throughout scripture.

Seems the author of this video is a post-trib believer. I believe though that the Holy Spirit is the restrainer. He doesn't believe the Holy Spirit is completely removed from earth. I believe it will be removed and that the 144,000 are not going to appear to preach the gospel to the world, because period of grace already ended. They appear because they are among the saved Israeli...
How can they get saved without the Holy Spirit? Brother, do you have a separate plan of salvation for the Jewish people, or must they, too, first be drawn by the ministry of the Holy Spirit, as we all are? By the way, you missed MacArthur's point. He holds unwaveringly to the pre-trib position.

I think thats an assumption that things will operate in the tribulation as they do now.
Problem is theres no indication that it will operate that way in Revelation.
Theres ministry work going on with the 2 witness, an angel, amd 144k.
Also, the Holy Spirit was sent(acts 2), which means He could be removed if God chooses. So the omcient omnipresent has nothing to do with how He operates right now.
Another point is if the rapture happens, the Holy spirit will go with us since we are sealed to the day of redemption.
Something big will be happening because the number of the martyers are so great, it jndicated a massive revival going on during the tribulation.

When God calls for his bride, the restrainer takes the bride with him, and Jeremiah 7 tells whom God kicks out of the church and why they are thrown out are spoken of there in Jeremiah 7:1-16.

Rev.3:10 is a promise of a rapture to the church of Philadelphia, those who find salvation will do so by dying or live through the seven years of hell on earth! Many will loose their lives and be joined from the glass at the alter, where the dead rest under the sea of glass, until all the killing is stopped, Rev.6.

John actually makes, albeit unintentionally, a pretty compelling argument that it is speaking of Michael. He's male. He has supernatural powers. And he is taken away to conduct the war in Heaven.
Everybody keeps focusing on a supernatural aspect to this but it's not. And I don't know why everybody thinks it's the holy Spirit as in some entity. You need to think of it in terms of who is being restrained. The lawless ones are the ones being restrained right now. It's the police. All power dominion and authority are enemies of Jesus Christ. He will defeat them all and then The last enemy to be defeated will be death itself.

The "restrainer" of 2 Thes. 2 is NOT the Holy Spirit as MacArther [and other Dispensational Futurists] assert.
Matthew Henry (1662-1714) writes in his commentary:
"There was something that hindered or withheld, or let, until it was taken away. This is supposed to be the power of the Roman empire, which the apostle did not think fit to mention more plainly at that time; and it is notorious that, while this power continued, it prevented the advances of the bishops of Rome to that height of tyranny to which soon afterwards they arrived."
Likewise, John Gill (1697-1771) writes in his commentary:
" And now ye know what withholdeth,.... Or hinders the revelation of the man of sin, or antichrist... by that which withheld, let or hindered the open appearance of antichrist, were the Roman empire and emperors; these stood in his way, and while this empire lasted, and the emperors wore the imperial crown, and sat on the throne, and held the government in their hands, the popes could not come at the height of their ambition, dignity, and authority, nor shine in their glory; nor could the whore of Babylon take her seat, and sit upon the seven hills of Rome until the Roman emperor was taken out of the way: this therefore hindered..."
The Reformers, and post-Reformation writers, scholars, theologians, were NOT Futurists; nor were they Preterists.
They were HISTORICISTS.
They all knew the proper identity of the Antichrist ("man of sin/lawlessness, son of perdition/destruction").
It is a shame that many professing Christians, bible-believing though they may claim, are falling for the FALSE prophecy scenarios of Futurism and Preterism...the two schools of prophetic interpretation which were first systematized by two different Spanish Jesuits in attempt to overthrow the clear teachings of Scripture, and the Reformation writers, on the subject of Bible prophecy.
Don't be fooled, brethren in Christ. The Bible is clear on the identity of the Antichrist.
More importantly, the Bible reveals the "False Prophet" as well; and it is the "false prophet" (aka. the "earth beast" of Rev. 13:11-17) who will enforce [by law] the "Mark of the [Sea] Beast" (aka. the Antichrist).
The proper identity of the Earth Beast is just as, if not more important than the identity of the Sea Beast.

Sentences later he says Christ’s coming wouldnt happen until this man of sin was revealed. He said they presently knew what was restraining this man. The text does not use the term “antichrist”. The coming of Christ was explicitly stated to happen in their 1st century generation, that some of them would still be alive, that they wouldn’t finish evangelizing through the cities of Israel before it. Over and over it is stated to happen quickly, shortly, would not tarry.

A pronoun needs a antecedent. Nowhere is the church or Holy Spirit mentioned in 2 Thessalonians 2 being the noun to the pronoun He who restrains. Without a pronoun we could say Micky Mouse could be the restrainer. The one who restrains is he who was and is not , but yet is. The beast who was taken out by a deadly wound is the restrainer. To say that the restrainer has to be a higher power ( spirit) is limiting God and his abilities. The Holy Spirit is God. For someone to think He can just be taken out of the way is absurd.

Or is Paul writing a letter to them that isn’t even for them and the “you” isn’t actually to them (as he says it’s to them in 1:1) + the “them”, who are the persecutors God would pay retribution for at Christ’s coming, aren’t even their persecutors (as he says in 1:4-7). Is Paul writing really writing a letter to them, while they are going through massive persecution, to promise retribution for this persecution to a people 2,000+ years down the road? Are those thesselonians still alive and awaiting this relief and retribution?
The second coming occurred in 70ad exactly the time and manner christ and the apostles said it would. The temple was destroyed along with the old covenant system. We are free to live in the new covenant now within the grace and peace of Christ. Not in fear of the law as in the old.
Preterism is the only eschatology that does justice to scripture and follows a consistent hermeneutic/exegesis throughout scripture.

And Paul told them that man of sin would be revealed (when he who was presently restraining, that they knew of, was removed) before Christ came to relieve them of their persecution + pay retribution against their persecutors at Christ’s parousia. Any thesselonian reading this letter would have understood easily. Unless, of course, Paul wrote to them in all manner of designed enigmas, as the futurists would have.

The thesselonians could not come to that conclusion by reading this letter. The thesselonians knew who the restrainer presently was and soon to know who was being restrained. Paul promised them, in this letter, in clear and explicit terms, that Christ would return to relieve them from their persecution and pay retribution against those who were persecuting the thesselonians. But before this the man of lawlessness would be revealed. Therefore, as any good student of scripture, one must follow the pronouns, follow the audience relevancy, follow the historical context, then MAYBE one could come to a solid conclusion on who this restrainer was.
